Ubuntu Servers :: SMB Shares Not Visible In File Browser(s) - Still Work
Apr 20, 2011
I set up an Ubuntu server install yesterday. I have used Ubuntu desktop for quite some time and have no issue with command line. I have everything working, except SMB shares. The share still works if I enter it's path manually (//server/share) but even shares I want to be viewable by browsing are not. (Attempted to browse in Nautilus, Windows and Mac file managers.) Server is running 10.10 (AMD64). Dump of smb.conf (generated with SWAT, which also works otherwise) follows. Solution with either SWAT or editing the file manually is fine.
While in a web browser I'm trying to attach a file which resides on a network location. The file dialogue doesn't allow me to browse any network location. I've mounted the volume and added locations to favorites. I've also tried entering an smb:// path. This only happens in browsers, both FFnd Chrome, some examples would be attaching a file in gmail, yousendit, etc. I can browse and work off the network normally in desktop apps.

using Ubuntu file browser, I browsed my Windows network and logged on to a Windows PC. Now Ubuntu file browser shows me "C$ on WinPC" as a folder. I can open it, read/write files, etc.But from bash prompt, I don't see anything of type CIFS/SMBFS listed in the output of "mount". Only the usual suspects (like local CDROM). How can refer to Windows files from Linux commandline?
I have successfully mounted windows shares in to ubuntu and can able to access the folders from nautilus. But i wanted to open the mounted share folders from the "open file browser(select a file dialog)" in DeVeDe app. I have tried all the options, and nothing worked out.
I'm trying to share some folders over the network, but the shared folders are not visible on another computer. This is through double clicking my computer from the Network list in Nautilus. However, I can access the share by typing the full address(<computer name>/<share name>) in "File > Connect to Server...".Since I can't type the address manually from my blu-ray drive, I need to get the shares to show on the network. What is wrong with my settings?
i have installed mtn and its work perfectly in shell, i have written a php script to run mtn in browser, if i run this php script in CLI it works well and if i run in browser its not working, here is the code for php
Code: <?php error_reporting(E-ALL); if (function_exists(shell_exec)) {
I finished deploying work for my web server with Ubuntu 10 lts, everything testing is pass, only the php file issue, I put a testing php file in the /var/www/testing.phpbut I open a firefox, and then I saw a blank page, I am sure that Apache read the file, but why return a blank page in browser,

i can't do the write test because it says: "the disk seems to ahve usage 'filesystem' ..." So I try copy via file browser.. From #1 to #3 i have an average write rate of 17 MB/s (one big file) When I do the same over GBit network, i get about 21 MB/s
I've got an X2 4200+ which is about 50% in use (both cores) in the worst case.
I installed Fedora 12 yesterday. After installation, I added some packages like gstreamer*, amarok, vlc etc. Once I rebooted, all desktop icons became invisible and I'm unable to open file browser and browse files/folders. When I log out, I get this message saying "File Manager not responding!"
I initially thought I messed up with settings, and created a new account. Still no use.
BTW, I use Gnome Desktop Environment.
I went further and installed Fedora 12 again. And did the same package installation. And after reboot, no desktop items is visible and can't browse files/folders using file browser (nautilus).
I have a remote VPS with 9.10 installed and would like to host some files on it. I'd like to be able to download the files from a browser using a login name and password.
The company I work for, as usual, is Microsoft-centric. I'm attempting to integrate my Ubuntu server into the domain to allow domain users to authenticate to the server and access file shares using Samba. Here's my current configuration:
I downloaded Ubuntu Server. I absolutely love it. It is easy to set up and I've already learned alot while doing so.
Now, I want to get a bit further. I want my Ubuntu Server to be accessible from the internet, so I can access my files and webpages from everywhere.
Everything works locally, but I don't have any clue to maken it visible for WAN. Is everything from here set in the router settings? Or will I also have to make adjustments in the Server's settings?
Today I noticed that I cannot enable visual effects on my computer. When I try to enable them, the screen flickers, enables the effects for just a moment, then flickers back to the previous screen with a dialogue box that says "visual effects could not be enabled". This is very strange because I was able to enable them when I first installed Ubuntu (in fact, I ran the "extra" visual effects for a while until I decided that it slowed my computer down too much). I don't know if it is possible that this has something to do with the most recent updates? I'm not sure exactly what graphics card I have, but it is an ATI Radeon of some sort.
I am working on uBuntu 10.4 server. I am using kingston USB memory stick. When I plug in some times I don't get any messages on console.#lsusb --> shows the list of USB devices. In which I find the Kingston memory stick. Means ..it is detected.
But when i type #fdisk -l I don't see any devices like /dev/sdc1.
I'm trying to run Web server (nginx, does not really matter) "behind" VPN tunnel (i.e., on VPN client - the idea is that Web server is available at VPN endpoint IP on VPN server). Stock Ubuntu 9.10 Server with stock openvpn 2.1. No network changes done, only ufw is enabled and IPv6 is switched off. I need this box to be available at main IP address, no default route for VPN tunnel.
Tunnel itself works nicely, no problems at all. Hand-made static routes work via tunnel just fine. Problem is in-going traffic - I can see that it at least comes via tunnel (via OpenVPN debug), but is blocked (or dropped) by firewall or kernel. As far as I know, specific VPN server does not filter anything and is used for running Web servers on other IPs. I think I might need to set up some sort of IP forwarding for tap0 device to localhost - but don't really know where to start.
Tried disabling firewall, making Web server listen on all IPs (from localhost to VPN tunnel) - no luck. The box is in another country and KVM will be time and money, so I really don't feel like experimenting. openvpn.conf (IPs are obscured, non-relevant options removed, based on recommended config for that server):
I found some code and tuts that tell me how to create a playlist, and I followed it to the letter but it doesnt work...I'm guessing it has somethin to do with my configuration settings with apache, otherwise here's the code:
Applications working properly with SUDO only UBUNTU Noteboox 10.10 XUBUNTU I recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick notebook version on my HP Compaq nc6400 (Intel core2 CPU T5600@1.83GHZ). Later installed Xfce4. So, I am now on Xubuntu on top of Ubuntu (it seems).Coming to my problem, even though application working fine normally, Menu is not displayed in most of the applications. Ex: Transmission, GIMP, Mousepad, Pinta, gedit ........ No application shows the file,edit.. menus.
Also file sharing is also not possible in normal mode. When I right click on any folder or file sharing option is not visible. But if I run these applications with SUDO the menus are appearing. When I open nautilus with SUDO , I am able to get sharing options in right click. I tried the below command as advised in thread.php?p=6474144 But it failed
This is (I suspect) a Mac OS issue but they've given no help (or replies!) on Mac forums so I'll ask here.I've just got a Mac and I can connect to shares on my Ubuntu (10.04) server, read files and create directories but I cannot write. I get this error:"The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items."I can connect from the command line with smbclinet and write fine. I have tried several different users on both the Mac (cannot write) and Ubuntu clients (can write). Is this something to do with the ._filename files that finder creates? Or is there something wrong with the way I've set up my server? This is the first time I've used it with a Mac client.
I have a fresh installation of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS I have installed Boxee on it that is all and I am trying to set it up as a Samba Server. I have followed the instructions on following page:[URL]..On the box that I am trying to setup as a Samba Server using Nautilus I can view the shares no problem. On another Ubuntu box no such luck. I can get too Windows Network and I can see my workgroup. When I try and open the workgroup I get the following dialogue box for some time: Opening "WORKGROUP". You can stop this operation by clicking cancel. And then this error dialogue box:
Unable to mount location Failed to retrieve share list from server I have spent sometime trying to resolve this myself but have had little luck. As far as I know I have no firewalls in place; Ubuntu does not have one by default is that correct? At this time I don't have a Windows computer to try to connect too the server at this time, but plan to in the future that is why I want to use Samba.
I am connecting the two boxes with an D-Link DIR-825 router; both boxes are on the same subnet. Are there settings in the router that could be affecting this?
My computer running Ubuntu 10.10 cannot see the Samba shares on either of my two Windows XP machines. I have Samba installed and configured, I am on the correct workgroup. However, under "Network", there is only one item - Windows Network, which contains no workgroups. I am hosting a share on this Ubuntu PC, but I haven't had the time lately to see if I can view it from the Windows XP computers. If I click Connect to Server, and enter the IP Address of one of my XP computers, I can connect to them. However, if I enter the computer's name I get "Failed to retrieve share list from server" without a specific share, and with it I get "Failed to mount Windows share."
In first place i am sorry about my horrible English. I want to make a web site with a virtual host of apache visible by all the computers connected to my networking. I put this in the end of the file "/etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf"("192.168.1.194" is the IP address of my computer. The default gateway IP address is "192.168.1.1"):
[Code]...
It works if i go to "http://192.168.1.194/" with the browser of the computer with apache inside, but on the others PC of my networking this method don't work!
Last night i updated to 9.10, all good except i can no longer access my samba shares!!
here is the info from log.smbd after i stared it this afternoon

I've been trying to set up a Linux-only network and currently have a working DHCP, DNS, LDAP and NFS server, with a client that can authenticate with the LDAP server and a central /home folder. However, if I wanted to share folders on the NFS server, how would I make the share available to, for example, a particular group of users in the directory?I've never used NIS(+) on a network, but believe you can add a 'group' of users in the /etc/exports file--simples!Does anyone know of the best way to do it (even better anyone who is doing this in a production environment)?
provide support for a small business that uses Windows machines to access files stored on an Ubuntu server which has just been upgraded from 8.04 to 10.04 (32 bit version). Before the upgrade the users accessed their share by this batch file:
Code:
net use x: \servernamesharename /user:username
This would then prompt the user for his or her password which they would enter to allow them access to the share.Since upgrading to 10.04, the user gets a "system error 58" stating "The specified server cannot perform the requested operation"If the batch file command is changed to:
Code:
net use x: \servernamesharename
The same error message is given. The only work around I have found is to modify the file to read:
Code:
net use x: \servernamesharename /user:username password
This is not ideal at all as it makes the password protection useless. When I performed the upgrade I left the smb.conf unchanged. The smb.conf file is:
Code:
# # Sample configuration file for the Samba suite for Debian GNU/Linux. # # # This is the main Samba configuration file. You should read the
