Ubuntu Servers :: Postfix, When I Use Postfixadmin To Setup A New User, The Maildir Does Not Get Created ?
Jan 31, 2011
I configured my server to have the virtual mail authenticated and stored through mysql DB.Now the authentication works, but then I got the dreaded -ERR chdir error.After research and testing for ohurs I finally got it working on ONE account after I created the maildir with maildirmake.Now I am able to login and "list" messages, but nothing else. When I use postfixadmin to setup a new user, the maildir does not get created so I have the same problem.I'm trying to troubleshoot what is happening.Here are the relevant config files:
/etc/postfix/main.cf
Code:
smtpd_banner = $myhostname ESMTP $mail_name (Ubuntu)
biff = no[code].....

I have setup postfix and postfixadmin on a CentOS 5.5 server and the install appears to be ready to go. I have never used postfix and postfixadmin and I am having a hard time finding any documentation on how to setup and administer the postfix server with Postfixadmin. This is simply a test and alerting server and will not be hosting user mailboxes. I am only looking for the basics I am not going to need to setup anything complex

I recently Re-did my Postfix configuration using [URL] The thing that that guide did not tell me was how to get email to forward to other accounts or if I can point multiple accounts to the same place like here:
[Code]...
finally I tried putting a .forward record in /home/vmail/domain.com/username directory which didn't work either.

I have a problem concerning the vacation(auto response). I got a mailserver(smtp.mydomain.com), pop3/imap-server(mail.mydomain.com) webserver(www.mydomain.com, with postfixadmin on it). I use Debian 5.0 So it's like this, I receive mail to smtp.mydomain.com, it get checked for spam with amavisd-maia(Maia Mailguard), then delivered to the pop3/imap-server. I'm guessing there's something wrong with my postfix setup. I activate auto response for my account, when I get a mail it says this at smtp.mydomain.com:

I got a weird postfix setup question? This is a separate server to the one I posted about earlier today.
I need to setup a postfix server which will accept emails for local know address (full addresses) and deliver them straight to the users maildir.
Any unknown addresses (however for the same domain), needs to be relayed to another server.
This is a bit of a special setup as there is no fixed Internet connection to the server. So the plan is that local email get delivered straight away whilst emails to the same @domain, but that doesn't exist in the user tables get put in the hold queue and is later relayed to server number 2 when a connection is available.
I am using mysql to retrieve all my settings into postfix.

I am running Ubuntu Server 10.04 and I just created a new user. Everything works great except the new user's SSH shell can not do certain things.
For example, I cannot arrow up for previous commands on the new user. I just get "^[[A" when I try that. (I can do this on root.)
It also looks different on root versus the user, look:

I have a problem setting up Postfix on my home (behind Router/firewall) Ubuntu driven server, I have been trying for days now with no luck. All I would like to do is use the server to send mail (MTA). So while installing I configured it as a satellite system.
file:
/etc/postfix/main.cf
settings:
myhostname = mail.example.com
mydomain = example.com
alias_maps = hash:/etc/aliases
[code]....
I'm getting a 553 From address not verified. I have tried what it suggested from the URL link, but it still doesn't work.

I installed Postfix, Amavis-new + Spamassassin + Clamav, Dovecot, and SquirrelMail today, using the Ubuntu guides for each. I have 10.04 LTS Server. My PHP scripts can send email, but when I tried to log into Squirrelmail, I couldn't. Here is what my error log produced (the server name and user name have been changed) :
Code:
myserver dovecot: imap-login: Login: user=<username>, method=PLAIN, rip=127.0.0.1, lip=127.0.0.1, secured
myserver dovecot: IMAP(username): opendir(/home/username/Maildir) failed: Permission

I want to automaticly set the group ownership of user home directories to a group that the user is not part of. This is so that Apache can be part of this group and can access user public HTML directory, but other users are not able to access in any way the files in the users home directory. What I have seen that works manually is adding the user and then changing the group for the home directory. But I want to automatically set this when the user account is created. WHat I see happening is that when /etc/skel is copied, it automatically sets the group and ownership of everything to the users default group and ownership. I've seen some suggestions on setting permissions, but these don't seem to work because it seems that users are able to cd into a directory and not list it, but if they know the file name they can access the file.

I am currently running Ubuntu Server 9.10 and followed this HOWTO on setting up my email server.
[url]
Everything seems to work correctly. If I look in the Maildir the emails I send to test are there.
The problem is when I try to sync my email via IMAP from my windows box (on a different network) it doesn't show any of my email nor does it deliver new email. My email app doesn't give any errors nor does the logs on the server.
How can I get it so my email syncs to windows computer? I am sure it is something really small that I am over looking but I can't seem to find it anywhere. I don't know if you need to see any of my config files but I can post them if needed.

I'm trying to setup postfix (or exim, I don't mind which), so I can move away my last remaining PC from Windows.I've tinkered with Postfix for good part of a month and I can get it to accept emails using SMTP and post them to a virtual mailbox based on MySQL tables. And it rejects mail addressed to local email addresses that it can't find in the table.
First question (or problem.) I've set up Postfix to relay email it cannot deliver locally such as is the case when you send out an email. My remote host requires authentication. How can I set this up?
Second question: I want to force my clients to use either AUTH, TLS or SSL, and not allow anonymous connections (to prevent an open relay server.) How do I set that up without interfering with the smarthost setting? The smarthost login is not one of my clients, it's a pre-determined login and password that is solely used for the email relaying aspect.

Been trying for some time to get Postfix to not allow some internal users to send email externally. I have found some good resources online but none of them work. The user is still able to send email internally and externally.
I used the following web pages to assist me... [URL]
Below is my main.cf
# See /usr/share/postfix/main.cf.dist for a commented, more complete version
# Debian specific: Specifying a file name will cause the first
# line of that file to be used as the name. The Debian default
# is /etc/mailname.

I'm running a Debian LAMP server and I am adding postfix. The initial config is working and I can send and receive mail both locally and over the WAN. The problem is that I cannot get mail delivered to the user's home directory using Maildir/. I have set the:home_mailbox = Maildir/ parameter in main.cf but mail still goes to /var/mail after Postfix reload. The system is now using Maildir/ instead of mbox but in /var/mail. I really want to get mail into the user's home directory.

I'm configuring a server but at this time I can't send mail. I tried using the PHP mail() function and it didn't work. Webmin says I have no mail configured. I'll be the only user and mail recipient. I've used Squirrelmail and Roundcube before and liked them.
Do I need to install Postfix in order to user Squirrelmail or Roundcube? How should I set up mail?
Here's my setup:
10.04 LTS Server edition
Webmin 1.520
Apache 2.x
MySQL 5.x
PHP 5.x

I just installed Gutsy server. It is the only disk I can get to boot on this old PC trying to salvage. I'm at the "SERVER LOGIN" prompt. I created one user during the install. I can login as that user, but that user has "...Is not in the SudoersFile." How do I setup this user to be in the sudoers file, without having any ability to make changes to the system?

Original HOWTO can be found at: [URL]... So the other day I was in IRC and someone had brought up a problem where they created a new Administrative user, but didnt have rights to use sudo. Looked into the problem a little bit to figure out what was wrong, and it turns out that when you create a new user through the user manager (in kubuntu, anyways. Havent tested in Gnome.) the user gets added to the adm group, however, a quick look at the sudoers file shows that its looking for users in the admin group to allow the use of sudo. So, to solve the problem we do the following: If youre on the new admin user (which Im assuming you are) use the following commands:
Code:
su [insert username of old account without brackets]
sudo usermod -G admin [username of new admin account without brackets]
exit
Then simply logout, and then log back in (not always necessary, but the easiest way to flush the permissions.)
Code:
su [insert username of old account without brackets]
Means were going to Switch User to the old admin account
Code:
sudo usermod -G admin [username of new admin account without brackets]
This simply adds the admin group to the secondary group list for the new user
Code:
exit
Pretty self explanatory

I am replacing a home network - Windows Server 2003 and 5 PCs (XP Pro) with UBUNTU 10.4 LTS Server and client versions. I am keeping a couple of the PCs with dual boot until I can migrate everything over (Having some issues with iTunes, Family Tree Maker, Media serving, DVD decrypt and a couple of others, but that is for another post). It was great fun getting the server up and running using only shell commands. Took me ages just to get a folder shared! Migrating the data over from NTFS to ext3 was also fun given the limited space on the partitions.
I really only want to use the server for communal network type things ... central user account maintenance, shared folders for music, video etc and data backup. I don't need it to be performing server functions on the Internet e.g. web server etc although that may come later. How I set up central user management? All the PCs are currently setup with local user ids, and it is a bit of a pain to go round each PC every time I change something.
The server is not always up, so I need to be able to log into the local PC without it being active. I was using Active Directory on Server 2003, but I don't need anything that complex really ... just 3 or 4 users to manage. I have been looking at the setup tutorial at [URL] but am not sure how relevant a lot of it is. I have SSH setup so I can login remotely, NFS is working to share the folders, but that is about all I have done so far.

I set up a servber on my local machine, & also PHp - Both working fine.I'm trying to load up MYSQL i have installed it, & *can* start/stop the server. however if I do anything else with it, I get this error :-
Quote:
root@gordon-desktop:~# sudo mysqladmin -u root -h localhost password MYPASSWORD
mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
error: 'Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: NO)'
Query :-
1) How do I know MYSQL is actually active ? (apart from the message it says that its statrted (or stopped).
2) Is there a way to
a) Find out the usernames that are recorded on the MYSQL server ?
b) set / RESET the 'root' username (I know MYSQL root user is different to PC root user)
c) anything else I can do on the PHP / website code to see if MYSQL is working
(as yet, no tables / databases etc have been set up - as I can't get past this error message - I get the same error when setting up a database.)
Ps I did allow my usermname (when logged in to ubuntu) to edit / create files in the /usr/www/ directory (but it is still OWNED by 'root' - that directory)

I'm testing a Debian Lenny virtual machine to simulate my ideal setup for FTP server (with vsftpd): I want all internal users (corporation users with Active Directory accounts) to ftp into the same directory (i.e. /var/FTP/AD-DOMAIN/) and external users (customers) to ftp into their home directories (created manually on request).
I added user_config_dir=/etc/vsftpd_user_conf option in /etc/vsftpd.conf file and I've created /etc/vsftpd_user_conf/domain-user1 with local_root=/var/FTP/AD-DOMAIN
I have setup vsftp so I can ftp with every external and internal user chrooted and is working properly. AD validation for internal users and "normal" validation (via /etc/passwd) for external users work perfect.
I can FTP this server into /var/FTP/AD-DOMAIN with any AD user with its home directory created (i.e. /home/AD-DOMAIN/domain-user1/) but if I try to ftp with any AD user without its home directory created I get the error "500 OOPS: cannot change directory:/home/AD-DOMAIN/domain-user2"
I have found some references (http://wiki.flexion.org/FtpServer.html and http://howto.gumph.org/content/setup...ies-in-vsftpd/) about vsftp PAM authentication so I would supposedly get rid of the error message and the user would log into /var/FTP/AD-DOMAIN without problems, but I can't figure out how to setup my FTP server.
