I am about to set up a small office server. I want to know if it is possible to use ubuntu for file and printer sharing on a network with 9 winXP computers and three printers. The printers are all USB Compatible. There are seven winXP pro computers and two XP home.
Would it be possible to use CUPS and SAMBA for this configuration?
I am trying to setup a file server for a small office but have hit a couple of hurdles, is there a step by step guide how to setup a network for windows and mac computers to use it? I had setup a share etc but once I restarted the server all the files disappeared which I had in the home folder? Also when I setup users how can I use passwords that I select as everytime I set one it encrypts it and uses that instead of my one?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have spent some time testing out different backup solutions for my small home office during the last weeks, but still haven't found anything that have been working out too well yet. We can definitely work with a non-GUI script if that's what it takes, if only the requirements are fulfilled:
- Upload to Amazon S3 Europe. We get unbelievable slow uploading speed to US, so uploading 400+ GB of data will not be happening anytime this year...
- Incremental backups - only changed files shall be uploaded or we will have a big bill from Amazon in the end of each month..
- Files should not be uploaded in one big per-folder archive. This is not efficient at all, since if we change one file in a subfolder, a huge two-digit GB sized file would have to be uploaded during next backup. Not good for economy again, or traffic overhead on our internet connection.
I have installed a linux server in my office to run 16 machines. Its main use will be a internal mail server but will be also running websites.
I have installed Ubuntu 9.10 server x64 and have got apache running.
I am looking for the simplest more robust solution for smtp, pop3 and imap. I have only ever used qmail before and found it a pain to configure and its getting old so I though I should probably try something new. I have not much experience with running pop3 or imap on linux so would love a suggestion on that.
i got an old server with a 64mb flash-disk in.this seems to be the boot-disk.would it be possible to get ubuntu server on this?there is also an ide-disk in.in my opinion it should be good to boot of the flash disk and put the /home or /srv on the ide disk.someone any ideas about this?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have looked around a while for the answer, but nothing really fits. Here is the scenario. I have one server and a few openvz VE's running. I want to be able to auth whatever possible with LDAP. I have an LDAP server setup on the host and auth works for the server users. The tricky part for me is that every VE has their own domain. and if I can do that, they will also have the same login for their VE on said domain. I can setup users and the required software on the hosts and guest, but I guess I am confused at how to manage the multiple domain part of things.
not sure if proftp can do 'name based' stuff like apache, but if it can, we can point ftp.clientdomain.foo to the main server and handle it that way.
Small office... 20-30 computers all windows based. xp/vista/windows 7. 3 Servers running ubuntu 10.04... 1 domain controller, and two file servers with samba. We want to be able to login once in the morning, and then not have to worry about users/passwords at all throughout the day. So I was thinking that I could setup a PDC and then make the two filservers both BDC's and use ldap to authenticate everything. Would this even work out? and is there a better way to do it?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI ended up setting up a basic linux file server as a pdc for that office. Our main office is a windows 2000 ads domain. The two offices are connected with a vpn. I only have two users at the new location so I simply have the linux and samba usernames/passwords setup manually. I would like to know if it is possible to setup a domain trust between the two sites so I don't have to create a username/password in the remote site for every user at the main office to access. I did some searching but came up empty.

I'm going to buy a small floor standing rack and in it we will have a dedicated firewall / VPN box, a web development server and a fileserver (for now). I intend to use Debian squeeze for everything.
My main question is what should I do about RAID? I've not used it myself before, instead relying on backups to removable disks. This time I want to do everything properly, and a measure of disk redundancy is required so I guess we will be going for RAID 1.
I'm looking at this [URL].. server which comes with an Intel ICH10R RAID controller on board, and also has an option to add a 3ware 9650SE-LP. The site says the Intel chipset is Windows only, so I guess the 3ware alternative is the way to go. The server also has two 3.5" hot swap drive bays. Could anybody advise me if the 3ware card is a good choice for use with Debian? Also, how can I monitor the health of the drives with standard Debian tools out of the repos? Any other RAID tips are also interesting for me.
Very recently I started using Evolution as my mail client. Before that I was using MS Outlook. Everything seems to be OK with Evolution but I find 2 startling limitations.

I have been using Trixbox CE for a couple of years and a client has asked me to setup a VOIP system with two phones and a couple of extensions. When he gets hit with a borage of phone calls I need to have the call that are behind the others to go the the next extension. I need redundancy if one Internet connection goes down and have the another kick in or failover. How does one configure Trixbox to failover to the other Internet connection and can someone give me a list of carriers in the Washington D.C area. Can someone point me in the right direction?

It didn't boot successfully as the system kept rebooting. I then tried to install grub onto the MBR and boot partition (mounted at /mnt/tempboot).

Since Ubuntu and other Linux Distros are free to download and distribute. Would it be illegal for me to have a Small Business of my own that would charge individuals/small-businesses to Install and Setup Linux desktops. I wasn't sure how that GPL license worked. I figured I would be charging individuals for setting up Linux Desktops on their machines or small business/offices and training/teaching them on the various applications they could install on their own.
Also, would it be illegal to create websites using Apache, Tomcat and other Open Source tools and then sell those sites. I figured many people are turned off by learning or installing something other than Windows desktops on their pcs, just because it is different. If this cannot be done under the GPL license, then could someone tell me how I could go about starting my own small business to legally Setup/Install Linux distributions.
I am wanting to setup an office network consisting of three computers and one server. We already have the equipment ready with Vista Business pre-installed on the computers. I want to be able to create a network which allows users to use any machine as this will reduce downtime should a machine break. Also I would like user's files to be held centrally on the server which makes backups easier.
The most important element here is data backup. As like most businesses we are moving away from paper and using the computers to store important records such as customer information. If this data were to be lost, the business would come to a complete halt.
I have been looking at the idea of installing a Microsoft Small Business Server as it would be nice to have centralised control of the machines. However the cost would be over 800 which can not be justified for three machines and five users. Therefore I am turning to Linux for a alternative solution. I have previously used CentOS and Ubuntu for home use but never really gained much knowledge or experience of either.
It is my understanding that Samba can act as a Primary Domain Controller, which if I'm not mistaken is where it handles the network logins and profiles. Is this correct? I have come across many samba tutorials online but whats confusing is they are all different. Some of the tutorials involve using Kerberos and OpenLDAP. Do I need to learn about either of these? What do they do and what benefit will they bring?
Finally, I see Samba 4 is in development and is likely to bring a lot of new features which aren't available in Samba 3. Is this worth waiting for because I don't want to be upgrading everything again 6 months down the road?
I'm running Debian Squeeze (6.0.1) 64-bit and I'm trying to run Microsoft Office 2007 (due to formatting issues with OpenOffice) through Wine (version 1.0.1 from the repositories). I followed the instructions over here but when I try to run the setup I get an error box with the following message:
Setup did not complete successfully. We are sorry for the inconvenience. An error occurred during the installation, and setup was unable to complete. Please tell Microsoft about this problem. And there are two button: "Send Error Report" and "Don't Send". And the installation is aborted. Is there anyway to make this run?
Last weekend i've set up my first headless ubuntu home file server and torrent downloader with ubuntu 9.10.Very cool but CPU is way too fast for a home server: P4 HT 2.8Ghz, unfortunatly it has only 256Mb of ram, so no X server and no VNC (old HP office pc) At the moment memory usage is only 40Mb without X server. QUESTION: I have some backups using these formats: .sdw, and .odt. Can Libre Office read documents saved in these (StarOffice / Open Office) formats?
FWIW: I would have preferred to use OO on both machines, but unfortunately OO never fixed a problem with printing envelopes in the Macintosh version. Hence my use of NeoOffice.
I am attempting to setup a network to network VPN tunnel between our main office and a temporary location. This location need full VPN access back to the main office's network.Anyhow we have spent about 3 solid days attempting to make this work without any great success. I have both installed, but since LO is going to be the way Ubuntu goes for office applications, can I easily have my system setup for native LO? Native being if I double clock on a .doc file it will start up LO's Write program instead of OO.Will just removing OO achieve this or is there an easier way? View 9 Replies View RelatedWe are trying to set up a NIS server on a CentOS system. We need to have a NIS server which can provide NIS authentication to a couple of clients. We are practically new to all this stuff.
Just googled to find some ideas about installing ypserv and ypbind and portmapper. We did all that and also started them successfully. But now the clients are not able to join to the NIS domain . The error log states "YP_DOMAIN NOT BOUND".
I guess we have not entered the /etc/yp.conf, /etc/hosts files properly. Please let us know the detailed steps to setup a NIS server .
Also, please let us know what entries should go into the different /etc/<file_names>? What is meant by HOSTNAME in the /etc/hosts file?
Is there any other files which need to be changed? Are we missing any steps?

is qmail server running in the secondary office and it was working fine. yesterday qmail suffered some problem.i came to know about the problem today.now after troubleshooting and looking into the server, the qmailclt stat commands shows that all services are working and there is nothing going crazy in the server. The maillog is showing errors which i am pasting here for the convienance.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI am going to try and replace our crappy Windows/imail server with a new ubuntu 10.04 LTS based machine. It will end up with about 400 domains on it with around 3000 users total. 96% of the domains have very light use. 4% of the domains have heavy use but do not send any bulk mail.
Can someone here recommend a mail server software package that would be easy to administrate and easy to backup/replicate? All we need is POP with webmail. We do not need IMAP or want any group/collaborative functions.
What do you usually use for anti-spam on a linux mail server? We want to keep it all open source if possible.
For hardware we are looking at an HP DL360 G5 with dual Xeons, 4G of ram, and the P400 controller with 6 SAS 15k drives. Do you think a server like this will be able to handle the mail on linux? Volume is around 400k messages a day inbound with about 10% being legit/90% being spam. The server will be dedicated to mail hosting and will not host websites.
First of all, let me just state that i want to make a small server for my home.. which includes hosting a website and a small FTP server.
Now as far as ease, stability, use, etc.. just overall, which would be more ideal to use for this?
My top choices are FreeBSD and Ubuntu Server.
However, I do not know which of these to go with, since this is my first time setting up a server. I hear BSD is really best for web servers, but I would like to hear what the people at LQ has to say.

Sometime ago I realized my Open Office had changed, I don't remember having done anything in particular but today it isn't the regular open office but what I believe is a KDE version or idk. The theme changed and instead of regular menus I get "window" menus, in the sense that they get effects as regular windows. It's hard to explain it.
