Ubuntu Servers :: Server Is Partially Unresponsive?

Jul 16, 2010

I have a remote server which has been working perfectly for about 1 year. It is in a secure location and used for serving a local web-app, and we remote administer it through an OpenVPN tunnel, and previously a Hamachi tunnel. It has in the last few days become partially unresponsive. What I mean is that I can ping it fine through the VPN, and I can SSH into the box, but when I try to run some commands, it seems to freeze partway through, and I get the output interrupted and a blinking cursor. I have also tried to access the web-app through the VPN and while the page header in the browser changes to the correct page name, the actual page does not load.A reboot does not seem to have cleared the problem, although I cannot be certain at this moment that the reboot command actually completed, or froze partway through

Server :: Debian Becomes Unresponsive While Running Java?

Mar 13, 2011

Kernel version: 2.6.26-2-686
Java version: 1.6.0_0

I'm going to run a full system update, but I doubt that'll work.

What happens is I turn the computer on, log in, start the application with:

java -Xmx1024M -Xms1024M -jar minecraft_server.jar nogui

and it will work fine for a while, but then, while we're playing, it'll become unresponsive and crash. I then go over to the physical computer, wake the monitor up by pressing the down arrow, delete the "[[B" that appears, and try to issue the applications stop command to save and close the application. This doesn't work. The computer registers what I type and registers the return, but nothing happens. I switch over to my second console, log in, find the PID of java, and attempt to kill the java process as root. It accepts the command and gives me another line of prompt, but when I switch back to the first console, nothing has happened.

I then switch back and try to issue a shutdown for right now, and it'll get to "Sending processes the SIGTERM signal", and then it waits for them to be killed, but will not progress further than that. I then have to either force the shutdown with the 3-second hold for the power button, or I have to turn off the power bar it's attached to.

Also, if I'm at the prompt and press backspace, which gives me a system beep, it doesn't stop. Instead of one, short beep, I get a never-ending tone, as opposed to the beep.

The computer does run a little hot; It's in a closet and it's kind of crammed, but it's never so hot that you can't handle the computer.

Hardware :: HDD Recognized In Ubuntu 9.04 But Partially On Windows

Mar 11, 2010

I'm actually using both system, Ubuntu 9.04 and Windows XP, I got an HDD Western Digital (WD4000YR) with 400GB capacity, I have this weird problem (confirmed on other MoBo's with the same problem):
Power on the PC > In BIOS, disk capacity is 150GB > Start on Linux > In linux, disk capacity is correctly display: 400GB > Reboot > Start on Windows > disk capacity is correctly display: 400GB
BUT IF
Power on the PC > In BIOS, disk capacity is 150GB > Start on WINDOWS > in Windows, disk capacity is incorrectly display: 150GB

Linux its the solution to my problems, if I start on linux and then i REBOOT to windows works fine, but it doesn't if I turn OFF the PC. I need both systems due to incompatible software. My question is: Why in LINUX the disk works fine and if I reboot the disk continues doing just fine? What linux do that windows doesn't on the disk thing? I though maybe adding a line in windows option of the GRUB or something.

What I tried:
Fill with zeros using the WD tool, resign and format in Windows
Fill with zeros using the WD tool, resign and format in Linux
Format in Windows
Format in Linux

I have to say that the disk works great, when I do that (start linux then reboot to windows) the disk works just great, I had large movie files in there and works. So maybe the disk its not.

Ubuntu :: IPhone 3GS Works Partially - Cannot Sync Any Stuff

May 9, 2010

Since installing Lucid LYNX LTS on my Netbook. (See: [URL] [#136]). Via USB, I can connect my iPhone 3GS. It gives me two simultaneous choices:
Open F-Spot and Open Rythmbox.
In addition, I can also "Open / Browse Folder". As such, I can view / import photos and videos made on the phone, as well as video PODCASTS. I can also play my music files

What I cannot do:
1) Play / find my purchased audiobooks [decryption not supported]
2) Locate the mp4 videos / movies (NOT encrypted) that I transferred to the phone via iTunes on my MacBook.
3) Send a file via bluetooth to the phone [the Indicator Applet does allow me go go as far as select the file. It gets to the point of "connecting" then "unknown error occurred"

I cannot sync the addressbook, calendar, or notes on the iPhone with my netbook. I have the following libraries installed:
ifuse
libmobiledevice-utils
libmobiledevice0
libplist++1
libplist1
libusbmuxd1
python-imobildevice
usbmuxd
NOTA BENE: This phone is NOT jail-broken.

Ubuntu :: Bash Script Works Partially In Cron?

The script is called up by crontab and it works perfectly. The issue is that I want the script to also perform a system "beep" in addition to popping up the jpg file. When I test it on the command line everything works but when I run it in cron the jpg file pops up but the beep doesn't beep. I'm thinking the problem is in the "echo -e \a" part. I must be missing something. Here is my script:

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade To 10.10 Partially Failed / How To Complete

OpenSUSE :: Compose Key Works Only Partially?

Jun 4, 2010

My recent install of 11.2/KDE on a laptop suffers from a strange misbehaviour of the compose key (I have declared the Windows and Menu keys as Compose). It appears that two different sets of composing sequences are active, depending on the application.

I have to explain that I use a lot of unusual characters on a regular basis and therefore keep adding more sequences to /usr/share/X11/locale/en_US.UTF-8/Compose. I have even redeclared a couple of predefined sequences to values that are more useful for me. All these work fine, for example in a terminal window (konsole or xterm) or in konqueror, or even in OpenOffice.

However, other applictions seam only able to handle the default set of Compose sequences. This applies, for example, to Firefox or Gimp. It does not matter whether they are invoked from the command line or from a desktop icon. I tried both the Firefox shipped with OpenSuse, and a download from mozilla.org: Same result.

I tried to delete other Compose files from /usr/share/X11/locale/* but it did not help. I wonder where the default rules are actually found after deleting all the Compose files, even if (for some reason) the locales have changed in these applications.

Fedora Installation :: How To Fix A Partially Successful Upgrade

Jan 19, 2010

I hit some trouble upgrading from FC 10 to FC 12 using the netinst CD. I had previously successfully upgraded the system from FC5 to FC10 with the same method - that time everything went well. At first the upgrade went well - the installation program found my FC installation and detected the partitions right. The problem appeared when about 90% of the rpm's were installed. Anaconda was complaining about a fatal error with a package and quit.

After rebooting and restarting the installation program it does not recognize my partitions anymore and suggests I'd format them for a fresh installation. As all my data is there I'd rather not do that. I then rebooted again and chose "Repair" from the installation menu. I got to the console and noticed that all partitions mounted cleanly and all the data seems to be there. Trying to reboot from the hard disk almost works. The system gets up, goes through grub, gets the kernel running and mounts the disks but fails to launch Xorg.

I get to a terminal login from here by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F2. When I type the user name and press enter the terminal seems to crash - does not ask for the password but simply returns to the user name query. An error message flashes just after pressing enter but too quickly for me to read. When I boot from CD again and go to the terminal via the "Repair" option the previous events can be seen from /var/log/messages. Xorg tries to start and stops trying after a certain amount of failures. After that it says this:

Code:

init: prefdm main process (2123) terminated with status 1
init: prefdm main process ended, respawning
init: prefdm respawning too fast,stopped

[code]....

My best guess is that this happens because the upgrade was aborted before it completed and hence some necessary rpm's were left out. I figured I could possibly fix this by updating the packages with yum from the terminal if I got to log in. What should I do now? Could I for example try and manually copy some missing files to the disk as I can access it via the repair option?

At home, i have a wireless card ( Netgear WG311 ) that I then installed into the Dell. Being that she was needing to use it online right away, I searched for the first install as it was not detected, and used used synaptic to install the bcmwl-kernal-source as that was the prefer ed driver for Netgear. So now that I installed that, not only have I not fixed the wireless issue, I now have no wired internet. I've been searching and re reading as many steps as I can, but am running out of time as she needs the computer tomorrow. Installed the ndwrapper ? but was not able to actually get the driver installed. Fedora :: Full Format On A Partially Formatted DVD+RW Disc?

Aug 26, 2009

I have a (partially) formatted DVD+RW disc, and need to do a full format in order for wodim to be able to properly write to it, since wodim does not do DVD formatting automatically, despite what its man page says. (I want to write using wodim, NOT growisofs, since wodim has a -pad option for zero-padding, and the -pad option to growisofs doesn't work when burning an ISO file.) ,

wodim -v dev=/dev/dvd -format
doesn't work on an already partly formatted disc, only an unused one. And
dvd+rw-format -force=full /dev/dvd

doesn't work either, claiming the command-line option is unimplemented (even though the usage is documented). Is there any natural way to do this, or do I have to do something ugly, like using growisofs to write an exactly 4.7 GB file to the disc?

General :: World Of Warcraft And The Mystery Of The Partially Working Key?

Feb 17, 2010

I run openSUSE 11.2 (kernel 2.6.31.12) and I use Wine 1.1.38 to play World of Warcraft from the konsole terminal application. For the most part this works okay, but there is one small issue that continues to annoy me:

Look at your keyboard (assuming standard QWERTY no-name keyboard) - see the key just left of your Backspace key? That key is only partially working for me in WoW. I cannot bind it to any action bar button in-game, with or without addons enabled. For some reason the key works fine when entering text into the chat console though.

I have used xev to get a bit of data on the key itself - not that it is that informative to me though, but the absence of the issue when playing WoW through Windows would suggest that it is somehow endemic to my Linux configuration:

Code:
KeyPress event, serial 34, synthetic NO, window 0x4a00001,
root 0x1a7, subw 0x0, time 6474080, (159,-10), root:(1364,15),
state 0x10, keycode 21 (keysym 0xfe51, dead_acute), same_screen YES,
XLookupString gives 2 bytes: (c2 b4) ""
XmbLookupString gives 0 bytes:
XFilterEvent returns: True

Ubuntu Networking :: Machine Will Suddenly Stop Responding To Connections While Still Remaining Partially Connectible?

Jan 2, 2011

I have a strange problem where my machine will suddenly stop responding to connections while still remaining partially connectible. Here's an example sequence of events I have taken (numerous times). If anyone can spot something else I should check or has seen these symptoms before please let me know.1) System is using an Edimax 7318-usg, Ubuntu 10.042) Wifi connection is working, with power management turned off (iwconfig)3) Signal strength does not cause the connection to drop (confirmed with router logs)4) When in a ssh session on the problem machine suddenly the ssh session is dropped "host is down"5) When I attempt to re-initiate ssh it fails, no route to host...6) Pinging it fails, accessing a webpage hosted on it fails, all access fails7) The machine I'm pinging/sshing from still has a good network connection8 ) I check my routers DHCP leases, problem machine still has a valid lease.

9) Router still shows problem machine in routing & arp table & shows active traffic going to and from (I checked the routers states and bandwidth monitor for this)10) I try sshing and pinging the problem machine from the laptop on the local network, it still fails, no route to host, wtf?11) I go to the problem machine physically, wifi connection is up with decent signal12) ifconfig indicates it still holds an IP address13) I open a browser on the problem machine, any webpage loads fine14) I ping the laptop from the problem machine, ok15) I ssh from the problem machine to my laptop, it works16) At this point I ssh from the laptop to the problem machine, sometimes it works sometimes it fails(it seems that pinging/sshing the laptop FROM the problem machine sometimes makes it connectable again).

17) Usually if I wait a while the problem machine will randomly become connectable again at random intervals18 ) The only reliable way to make the problem machine connectable again is manually reconnecting it to the wireless network19) I tailed auth.log ufw.log, etc. nothing suspicious disallowing my ssh connection20) dmesg shows nothing unusual, as far as I can tell, just some activity negotiating WPA keys and suchBy looking at the timestamp for the WPA negotiation and cross referencing the router bandwidth monitor I can tell the WPAnegotiation doesn't make it drop the conectionSo that's it, lol.

Sometimes it's while the system clock is being set, sometimes after. It's just the installer that is locked up, I can still move the cursor but because the installer is fullscreen I cannot get out of it, at least not that I know of.

On Dell Inspiron 9200, with or without accelerator for NVIDEA graphics. P.S. I would like to give 9.10 a chance. have gedit and browser open (browser with the forum message being edited), then do the following:

1.This example demonstrates one problem (unresponsive single click) Use the System-->Preferences-->Mouse

Click repeatedly on the light bulb at 1 second interval ---> result: often the light does not turn on. Result: it appears that the click event does not complete. I have noticed that a mouse-out will cause the click to complete (specifically as in 2. and 3 after a brief moment (hopefully before the drag and drop icon appears).

2. Click on any icon, submit button, close, etc. takes many tries.

3. Click on any icon, panel button, link, etc. if you linger a moment a floating icon (a drag and drop hand).

4. Scrollbar button and action follow the mouse outside of the scrollbar. The scrollbar sticks - difficult to make scrollbar stop following the mouse.

5. Example, have two visible windows (for example gedit and the browser) From gedit move to browser by click on browser. ---> result takes forever to recognise the focus and click and go to the broser.

6. Unresponsive UI. In browser highlight text in textarea (with difficulty) then chose Copy (slow UI), from this window click on desktop's Applications (takes many clicks to open), from Accessories click on gedit (slow or takes more than one try), paste (speed of paste OK).

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 Unresponsive, Can't Reinstall?

Jun 16, 2010

However, after a day or two of inactivity (apart from remotely logging in for SSH), the computer goes into a state where the screen is blank and it is unresponsive (and no longer allows access by SSH, FTP, or SVN server access). I have to reboot the computer to use it again, which I can't always do when I'm traveling. I inquired about this previously -but I'm convinced the solution may be more complicated than suggested because I don't have compiz turned on and the computer's power management is already set so that it's never supposed to sleep. I tried to install 10.04 fresh from a Live CD, but it freezes where it asks me how I want to use my partitions so I can't even reinstall

At some point or another during a lockup, the active programs running use up all of my CPU and a sizable chunk of RAM. Then after a few minutes, it stops and goes back to running normally for a bit. There seems to be no common element that sparks this behavior. Anything I do causes my computer to freeze for 2 minutes. It seems to be a common issue as well, and I've been unable to resolve this substantial problem. Is there some bugfix I am missing?
