Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 Unresponsive, Can't Reinstall?

Jun 16, 2010

I upgraded from 8.04 to 10.04, and most things appear to be fine. However, after a day or two of inactivity (apart from remotely logging in for SSH), the computer goes into a state where the screen is blank and it is unresponsive (and no longer allows access by SSH, FTP, or SVN server access). I have to reboot the computer to use it again, which I can't always do when I'm traveling. I inquired about this previously -but I'm convinced the solution may be more complicated than suggested because I don't have compiz turned on and the computer's power management is already set so that it's never supposed to sleep. I tried to install 10.04 fresh from a Live CD, but it freezes where it asks me how I want to use my partitions so I can't even reinstall

Ubuntu Installation :: Has Stopped And Is Unresponsive

Mar 7, 2011

I'm writing this from the OS running off the live CD for 10.10. I'm installing this to a Dell 1501 over 2 Ghtz processor, 1.5 MB ram. I have gone through several dialogue windows and the last one is the password page. I have filled that out and below that there is the back button and foward button. The back button I could and have tried pushing. The forward button is gray and unresponsive. Under that is a progress bar. This bar has stopped. immeadiately above this, there is a text that says "Ready when you are..."

Ubuntu Installation :: Unresponsive After Upgrade From 10.10 To 11.04?

May 9, 2011

I have a really strange problem after upgrading from 10.10 to 11.04:

Switching between windows has a noticeable delay.

This is true whether I'm going between two terminals, two tabs in a browser, between tabs in my chat client, or between applications entirely. It's about a 1-second delay, when previously it was an instantaneous (or nearly so) action.

Ubuntu Installation :: Distorted Unresponsive Screen After Installing 10.04?

i wasn't sure where to post this, so if there's a better place, someone please more this thread. i just installed 10.04 64-bit desktop on a ~4 year old hp a1610n (pic below). it works great for about 20 seconds at which point the screen becomes distorted and unresponsive. i'm not entirely sure, but i think the problem didn't start until after i activated the (recommended) nvidia driver. its hard to say though since i set up that driver very soon after the install. here's a pic of the desktop: click me

here's a videos vid of what happens: watch me

if there's any other information i could provide that would be helpful, let me know.

General :: Installation Fail-cd Rom Now Unresponsive?

Mar 2, 2011

I had/have a dual boot Win7, Ubuntu machine and wanted to replace Ubuntu with Fedora 14. I booted from the Fedora cd and was going through the settings when the install froze (I think it was after clicking Next from the partition settings screen) and I had to do a cold shut down of the computer.

The computer now takes a long time to get to the Grub loader (timing out while looking for the cd rom I believe is what is happening) though it seems to boot fine. The problem is that the Windows OS now does not recognize the cd rom, or rather, it is present in the device manager, but will not respond via the OS (cannot be accessed via command line nor gui) nor from pushing the "Open" button on the hardware itself. It seems as if the device has been locked at some lower level.

Any idea how to 'unlock' the device? I can't boot from the cd anymore (the bios recognizes the presence of the device, but that is it) and I don't know how else to rectify the situation. I haven't tried booting to ubuntu yet (as I don't think anything was actually changed while attempting the Fedora install) but I am new enough to linux as to not know what to do if I could boot to it.

Ubuntu Installation :: New Install, Unresponsive On Normal Boot, Ok In Failsafe?

Nov 26, 2010

Last week I successfully installed Ubuntu/Gnome onto a 3 year old Toshiba Vista laptop which worked mostly brilliantly. Today I am trying to install it onto a 4 year old Toshiba XP laptop, but am having problems.

Laptop specs: Intel 1.50GHz 488MB RAM 60GB HDD, partitioned by Ubuntu on install into 30GB/30GB, both partitions over 75% free space The laptop, though old, still functions in XP, and the main reason we're switching it to Linux is that it has issues managing wireless, plus it's fun to do so - learning experience and all. The other laptop has better specs - multiply everything by 2 but Windows was much less reliable as, after all, it is Vista, and switching to Linux there was a necessity.

The Ubuntu is 10.10 and it's the same live cd I used to install it onto the other laptop. It's installed alongside Windows XP and the install proceeded without issue. However when booting in normal mode it becomes unresponsive very quickly - sometimes as soon as the five pips on the loading screen become orange, the last time it lasted a whole 2 minutes before becoming unresponsive.

In failsafe graphics boot it runs without issue. The update manager tells me it's up to date, and I have installed Wine through SPM while typing this. It's behaving as I'd expect it to, with tiny lags on scrolling sometimes (perhaps related to being in failsafe graphics).

Is there some setting (graphics?) I should change to allow it to cope in normal mode? I'm aware 488MB RAM is slightly under the recommended amount, but it evidently can cope in failsafe so would appear to be enough to function?

Fedora Installation :: Reinstall Grub After A Windows Installation Deleted It?

Jul 23, 2011

This is partly a note to myself for the future and a guide to anyone who experiences similar issues.

So, I had to reinstall Windows XP since my previous installation gave me a blue screen error due to reasons unfathomable. Naturally, this deleted the GNU Grub and I could not login to my Fedora.

I read that apparently booting from a DVD installation offers an option to enter the rescue mode. I did not have a DVD, I only had the LiveCD so I had to figure out a way to reinstall Grub from the LiveCD. The following method seemed to do the trick.

Run the LiveCD and open Terminal.

1. Find the partition where the Grub Stage1 is code...

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.10 And Win 7 - Cannot Reinstall Grub

Mar 29, 2011

I have Ubuntu 10.10 and Windows 7 on my computer. After not booting into my Ubuntu partition for a while, I noticed that grub had disappeared, being replaced by the windows bootloader. I followed the steps here under "reinstalling from liveCD" and I was able to get a grub command line when I rebooted, but no boot menu. So I booted into Ubuntu and ran update-grub like the instructions say, and the output indicated that Ubuntu and Windows had both been successfully found and added to grub.cfg. But when I rebooted, I still only got the grub command line.

When the instructions had steps for if you had a separate boot partition, I used /dev/sda1 because it is marked by fdisk as being the boot partition. I thought that maybe update-grub was only seeing /boot on the Ubuntu partition and wasn't touching the boot partition, so I tried mounting /dev/sda1 as /boot, but after that grub didn't boot at all, it just goes straight to Windows and I haven't been able to reinstall grub even after following the steps again several times. How can I get grub back?

Ubuntu Installation :: Cannot Fix Grub After Win Reinstall

Aug 7, 2011

I've reinstalled win 7 (dualboot). Then booted with rescuecd and tried to fix grub.

Code:

$mount /dev/sda3 /tmp/b/boot
$grub-install --root-dir=/tmp/b /dev/sda

This gave ma a grub shell on boot. The prbm was that this was grub1 - v0.97

I ran a proper 2nd time

Code:

$mount /dev/sda3 /tmp/b/boot
$grub2-install --root-dir=/tmp/b /dev/sda

Now on boot I can spot grub loading and black screen with blinking cursos on top. ubuntu 10.10, separate /boot, uncrypted /root (which is probably the cause) Also I have deleted the 2 win partitions (sda1, sda2) and made a new one (sda1). The /boot is still sda3, can this be the cause?

I don't actually think it's a huge problem, but I wanted to know in advance, what exactly to do before the point of no return. It's extremely important that the ubuntu installation will not be damaged or sth.

Ubuntu Installation :: CANNOT Delete OS And Try To Reinstall Another. 0xc000000e?

Jun 7, 2010

I tried to install the right way with GET UBUNTU DESKTOP EDITION and follow the 1st step to download and extract it in my flash drive. I then go into "install" and did another extraction and click on "install" label, I think. The problem happened there, when the system said it cannot find Wubildr. I said this to myself "This is tough to install" so I deleted the ubuntu OS application on my flash drive. I restarted the laptop before where it asked me to choose between "windows" OS or "ubuntu" OS. I had a DOS screen-like, therefore different from what is shown on the website.

Back to the story, I deleted the Linux Ubuntu OS, but that did not clear the OS off my system when I turn on the laptop power. Now my problem is I cannot get rid of the Ubuntu OS when I turn on the laptop. The message i got "wubildr.Mbr , Status" 0x000000f, info : the selected entry could not be loaded because theapplication is missing or corrupt. The whole message when I turn on the laptop is hereafter ==>Windows Boot ManagerWindows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:1. Insert your Windows Installation disc and restart your computer.2. Choose your language settings and then click "Next."3. Click "Repair your computer."If you do no have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance.
