Ubuntu :: Firefox Default Action For MS Office 2003 Files With Wine And MS Office 2007?

Aug 7, 2010

I've ran into something rather odd. I've installed wine and Office 2007. If I am to open a office 2003 (doc) or office 2007 (docx) file, it will open wine and office 2007 to edit the file. This is the desired behaviour. If I am to open an office 2003 (doc) file in firefox, openoffice will be opened. If I am to do the same with an office 2007 (docx) file, wine and office 2007 will open.where to start to get wine/office 2007 to open files from firefox?

How do you convert Open Office (ODT) documents to Text files?
I have made a report using libre office. Now I wish to continue editing the document using lyx (latex front end). So the ODT file needs to be saved as some .tex file.

I don't see an option to do this in File menu (export/save as). So is there any other plugin to do this?

Ubuntu :: Can't Use Excel Files With Open Office?

Dec 9, 2010

Can't use Excel files with Open Office. When trying to edit and fill out a RMA form using Excel file I keep getting a message saying: 'Protected cells can not be modified'.

Here's a screenshot. What do you have to do to get it to work with Ubuntu? Excel works fine with Windows but I can't use Excel on Ubuntu with Open Office. This is the first time ever using Excel with Ubuntu and Open Office.

Ubuntu :: Libre Office: Can It Read Open Office Documents

Mar 28, 2011

I just found out about Libre Office. I am currently using Open Office on my Netbook (ubuntu 10.10), and NeoOffice on my Macbook (OS/X 10.6.7).

QUESTION: I have some backups using these formats: .sdw, and .odt. Can Libre Office read documents saved in these (StarOffice / Open Office) formats?

FWIW: I would have preferred to use OO on both machines, but unfortunately OO never fixed a problem with printing envelopes in the Macintosh version. Hence my use of NeoOffice.

Some of them you can open and some of them you can not open and it doesn't give a reason you can't open them it just says can't open file anyfile.xls..I attached a word doc with pic of error in excel.

Software :: Open Office Cell Width For .csv Files

Mar 6, 2010

I have written my own matlab script to output a cell array to csv format, but I am having problems when I try to view the file in openoffice. In my script, if the length of the string in the cell is longer than 30 characters long I put a linefeed into the fprintf. This all works great and the linefeed works in Open Office, however the width of the columns are still set to the width of the entire length of the string. For example, in my cell I will have several lines 30 chars long, say four lines or 120 chars, and the width of the cell that it is contained in matches the width of about 120 chars long rather than 30. This is a problem because it shows the text all left aligned in the cell, which looks great, but there are pages of white space to the right and the next column is off the screen. This seems obviously inconvenient. If the string is longer than 30 chars I output it in the following way:

" First 30 characters of the string the rest of the string and so on"

I feel like there should be a simple solution to this but I can't find it. Is this a problem with Open Office or my understanding of csv? Would excel have the same problem? How can I fix this?

Programming :: Detecting Office 2007 Files By Script

Jul 24, 2009

We have a system where users can upload files, and then various things happen depending on what kind file it is. The check uses the file command. But for Office 2007 files, the file command says it is a ZIP file.

These files are in fact ZIP files, I can unzip them, and then I get a lot of small weird files. We don't need to do anything about these files, but it's a problem when the system handles them as ZIP files. So I need some way of detecting these files, and not by file extension (.docx) since it is often incorrect. Many of the users are Macintosh users and they don't always use a file extension at all.

Slackware :: Mime Type Associations For Office Files

Oct 22, 2009

I installed MS office 2003 via wine on Slackware 13. I need to know how to associate files with the right Office (msword, msexcel, msppt) program. I made launcher scripts that can launches office files from the CL, but the user on this computer will want to be able to just double click a file in dolphin and have the right office program come up.For some reason all office files show up as x-ole-storage instead of application/msword or something similar. So, even if I tell Excel to associate with that file, it will do it for Word and PowerPoint files as well.

.ppt, .doc, and .xls extensions were configured via the KDE file associations panel, but this did not help. I played around with the raw files under ~/.local/share, but I did not find the solution. The version of WINE is 1.1.24 (built from SBo SlackBuild).

Ubuntu :: Switching From Open Office To Libre Office?

Apr 22, 2011

I have both installed, but since LO is going to be the way Ubuntu goes for office applications, can I easily have my system setup for native LO? Native being if I double clock on a .doc file it will start up LO's Write program instead of OO.Will just removing OO achieve this or is there an easier way? I looked for file associations and didn't find it.

Ubuntu :: Get KDE Office Instead Of The Regular Open Office?

Sep 14, 2010

Sometime ago I realized my Open Office had changed, I don't remember having done anything in particular but today it isn't the regular open office but what I believe is a KDE version or idk. The theme changed and instead of regular menus I get "window" menus, in the sense that they get effects as regular windows. It's hard to explain it.

I tried uninstalling it and installing open office and also in the soft center open office is more than once, but I tried the different versions and I still get the same problem.

Software :: Double Clicking On Open Office Files Leads To Very Slow Opening?

May 15, 2010

I upgraded from Kubuntu 9.10 to 10.04. It was a fresh install of kubuntu, although I did leave a windows partition on there elsewhere. Grub messed up but I fixed that with a small text edit. Anyway, when I click on a file, i.e. Open Office writer or Calc, the computer thinks about it for like 60 seconds and then finally Open Office (version 3.2.0)finishes opening the file. It also does this while saving some files. It did not do this this version 9.10 which really amazes me. I have deleted OOo and reinstalled it several times and nothing helps. All other file handling seems normal, and it is a fast newer computer with a lot of memory.

I logged out and logged back in under Unity and could move the mouse but nothing would happen. I have gnome-panels disabled as well so alt f2 wont work even in my gnome DE. By disabling the log in screen and the grub menu have I painted myself into a corner so to speak and made this installation completely unrecoverable?

Ubuntu / Apple :: Installer Becomes Unresponsive

Mar 25, 2010

I have installed and run Ubuntu on my iMac, now I would like to try Kubuntu but the installer hangs every time inbetween step 1 setting language and step 2 choosing time zone. Sometimes it's while the system clock is being set, sometimes after. It's just the installer that is locked up, I can still move the cursor but because the installer is fullscreen I cannot get out of it, at least not that I know of.

I have made two different desktop CDs from two different ISOs and both gave the same exact behaviour. I think I prefer Kubuntu to Ubuntu but I haven't really been able to give it a try.

Currently I am using only about 20% of my CPU:s and 15% of my RAM..Booting didn't help.Lucky this doesnt happen in openoffice, firefox or gedit. (which I need most)and I am running 9.10, which has last been updated about a week ago.

Ubuntu :: Karmic Koala 9.10 Unresponsive UI?

Apr 21, 2010

On Dell Inspiron 9200, with or without accelerator for NVIDEA graphics. P.S. I would like to give 9.10 a chance. have gedit and browser open (browser with the forum message being edited), then do the following:

1.This example demonstrates one problem (unresponsive single click) Use the System-->Preferences-->Mouse

Click repeatedly on the light bulb at 1 second interval ---> result: often the light does not turn on. Result: it appears that the click event does not complete. I have noticed that a mouse-out will cause the click to complete (specifically as in 2. and 3 after a brief moment (hopefully before the drag and drop icon appears).

2. Click on any icon, submit button, close, etc. takes many tries.

3. Click on any icon, panel button, link, etc. if you linger a moment a floating icon (a drag and drop hand).

4. Scrollbar button and action follow the mouse outside of the scrollbar. The scrollbar sticks - difficult to make scrollbar stop following the mouse.

5. Example, have two visible windows (for example gedit and the browser) From gedit move to browser by click on browser. ---> result takes forever to recognise the focus and click and go to the broser.

6. Unresponsive UI. In browser highlight text in textarea (with difficulty) then chose Copy (slow UI), from this window click on desktop's Applications (takes many clicks to open), from Accessories click on gedit (slow or takes more than one try), paste (speed of paste OK).

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 Unresponsive, Can't Reinstall?

Jun 16, 2010

I upgraded from 8.04 to 10.04, and most things appear to be fine. However, after a day or two of inactivity (apart from remotely logging in for SSH), the computer goes into a state where the screen is blank and it is unresponsive (and no longer allows access by SSH, FTP, or SVN server access). I have to reboot the computer to use it again, which I can't always do when I'm traveling. I inquired about this previously -but I'm convinced the solution may be more complicated than suggested because I don't have compiz turned on and the computer's power management is already set so that it's never supposed to sleep. I tried to install 10.04 fresh from a Live CD, but it freezes where it asks me how I want to use my partitions so I can't even reinstall

Ubuntu :: Interface Unresponsive After Update?

Jul 8, 2010

After an update (and a restart), everything has become extremely sluggish to respond to my mouse and keyboard. It takes around 6 seconds to change a tab in Firefox, even changing windows will take 2 seconds before the new window will respond to typing (anything I type in the meantime simply doesn't appear).

Here is Synaptic's history from yesterday, I was wondering if any of the version numbers look off to somebody, or if somebody knows which is the offending package:

Ubuntu :: Unresponsive System Due To Beam.smp?

Sep 29, 2010

From time to time my system will practically lock up. During these times there is near constant hard disk access, and applications will quit responding for 10-30 seconds at a time.Looking in the processes of System monitor it appears that beam.smp is the culprit, during these times it is using 80-95% cpu and between 2 and 3.5GB or RAM (I have 4GB total). It appears to be this bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...ng/+bug/458453I am using Ubuntu 10.04, 64-bit. I am also relatively current on my updates (I think the last updates I did were about three days ago).Judging from the comments, though it looks as if it was fixed back in May.I don't know if it matters, but the only thing I use evolution for it its integration to gnome-pilot to sync my old Palm m130.

Ubuntu :: Computer Unresponsive For 20 Seconds Every Day

Nov 7, 2010

Almost every day, for around 15-20 seconds, my computer becomes unresponsive, while the hard disk makes a strange periodic sound (period ~2 seconds, half of it the sound suggests very intense disk activity, the other half - normal disk activity), and the hard disk LED stays on (not flashing, just on). I ran manually all scripts in the /etc/cron.* folders. Only the mlocate script seemed to cause higher than normal disk activity (but still low enough to not cause problems). I still disabled it, but the problem persists.

Ubuntu :: 10.10 Freezes Up / Randomly Becomes Unresponsive

Dec 16, 2010

Two fresh installs of maverick meerkat on my laptop. Both times, problems started immediately. Playing media files, web browsing with a few tabs, or running bittorrnet freezes my humble system.

At some point or another during a lockup, the active programs running use up all of my CPU and a sizable chunk of RAM. Then after a few minutes, it stops and goes back to running normally for a bit. There seems to be no common element that sparks this behavior. Anything I do causes my computer to freeze for 2 minutes. It seems to be a common issue as well, and I've been unable to resolve this substantial problem. Is there some bugfix I am missing?

I have looked around online and most solutions point towards a live cd, which I don't have.
