I have this 7.10 Ubuntu server that I'm trying to move inside a VM on my ESXi server. I use the VMware Conversion tool and everythings goes well until I try to boot it from inside the VM, the network isn't detected. Now I understand that the drivers may not be working, I'm not an expert here. Also, since this is a 7.10 install I don't have access to the Gutsy repositories anymore.
View 3 Repliesi have a small home network. i have laptops and workstations that my family (public) uses and an esxi box (private) that i use to test new apps for work.i need to have the public network separate from private. I have tried using two linksys routers but was unable to get the private network to access the internet. i was thinking i could use iptables with a couple of nics but I am not sure it would work. I know this could be a lot of work for someone that has never used iptables before but will give me a reason to learn it.i am sure setting up a public and private network has been done before i just don't to buy a bunch of hardware. I have a extra workstation and a bunch of nics so i would like to go that route. I am open to suggestions.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have ESXI 4.1 installed with Unbuntu Server 11.04, Gnome.I have 8 SATA drives installed they show up in unbuntu as removable media.I wish to share them to my windows users on my lan using.The problem is it will not allow me to change the permissions for the shares and as such when my windows clients try to access the shares they are told asscess denied.Samba will share folders created on my desktop ok, I have tryed sharing a folder in the draws but it still did not work.

View 2 Replies View RelatedSo a while back I was able to mount a directory from my OpenSuse server as a NFS on an Esxi server. After restarting the Esxi server, the NFS became inactive and I was unable to remount it. The error given was that the Esxi client was unable to connect to the Suse server. I was looking into the showmount -a command on the Suse server and it showed the mount point on the Esxi server. Could this be causing the Suse server to reject new attempts to mount the directory? What else can I try to fix this problem? Also I should note that both servers can ping each other.

But can't get the adapter to become active and pick up an IP address. Has anyone done this before? I can't get it to work. I have installed Ubuntu Server 10 (x64) using LVM with two disks (this is a Virtual Machine on VMWare ESXi4)
During install I selected only disk 1, and LVM guided Installation Added LAMP and SSH
Server gives only a text mode configuration, great if you are a linux guru, but I am not so it took a bit to find a stripped down GUI. None could be found but I did the following:
apt-get install xorg gdm gnome-core (minimal Gnome install)
apt-get install gnome-system-tools (users and *****s, time)
apt-get install gnome-network-admin (network config)

I have created a similar system with Ubuntu, now I wish to move the var/www directory to sda1, and the databases from MySQL.
I'm moving my site to a new VPS and need to learn how to move the files from my current server to the new one. I'd rather not download everything to my computer and then re-upload everything... seems like a lot of wasted time. There has to be a way to copy between the two servers, but how? I have heard someone mention rsync... is that a program I could use? If so, how?

View 2 Replies View RelatedA while back I successfully set up a software raid (mdadm) install of ubuntu server on a cheap Compaq machine. I'm pretty sure it's running an nForce 430 chipset. Anyway, I put 3 2TB drives in it and set up two arrays: a small raid1 array for /boot and a raid5 array occupying the rest of the drives.
One point of note here is that the raid1 array never seemed to "take hold": the partition is empty, and the system has been booting entirely from the raid5 array. I'm not sure if this is relevant or not: just throwing it in there in case it is.
Anyway, I recently upgraded my desktop PC, and planned to hand down the Q6600 and DG33TL motherboard from it to the server. I did the hardware upgrade, but now the system will not boot. My question is: why.
Boot fails with the following error message:
"No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key"
This to me suggests that it's not even getting to the point of running grub2: the mobo itself just isn't finding anything it considers to be bootable.
I've tried all combinations I can think of of configuring the SATA support in the BIOS (modes include IDE, ACHI and RAID, all in combination with UEFI boot enabled and disabled). The system does detect the three drives: it lists them in the BIOS config screen.
I've booted from an ubuntu rescue USB drive and I'm able to see the drives and even assemble the array. I can mount the LVM partitions therein and do what I'd normally be able to do with them.
Everything *seems* fine: it just can't boot.
Grub2 is something of a mystery to me, so I'm not exactly sure what I need to do to get it booting again, if indeed it is a problem with grub.
I am moving some websites from a shared host to a newly configured Xen based VPS with Ubuntu 10.04. A steep learning curve but I am getting there! I have a couple of sites installed on the new server and want to test them out, from what I understand I should be able to edit /etc/hosts on my desktop computer (running Ubuntu 10.04) which should automatically redirect my browser to the new server. But it doesn't seem to work.
This is what I appended to the /etc/hosts file:
12.34.56.78 www.xxxx.com
I thought that this should send any requests for www.xxxx.com to 12.34.56.78? Some googling indicated that the browsers I am using may be using DNS caching, ignoring the hosts file. I've tried clearing the cache with Chromium 7.0.517.44 (64615) and Firefox 3.6.12, and even installed a plugin in Firefox to block DNS caching.
I am using vnuml to test a network project. I have one Ethernet card on my ubuntu 9.10( eth0) with network 10.1.0.0/16, and creating a tap0 with subnet 10.4.0.0/16. Now the problem is how to work them together, such that packets from one interface goes to other one?

The idea is to fetch the mails from the least used address - on the provider's POP server - and forward it to the other address. He can use the SMTP server from the same provider to send off the forwarded mails.

I have an opensuse server which handles 5-8 sites, a mail server and a nameserver.I will move it to a new location and I'll have a different IP. Now, I didn't configure the server myself, so I don't know what to do so that the mail server, the sites and the nameserver to work in the new location with a new IP.
Does it suffice to change the IP of the nameserver from my domain registrar? What any other modification I'll have to do in order for the mail and sites to work at the new location?I searched tutorials on moving a server to a new location but I didn't find any...
I ping my router. If I keep my mouse moving (or i'm typing) I get a 5ms ping.If I stop typing/moving my mouse, it times out.
- I disabled NetworkManager for the inteface eth0 but it doesn't solve the problem.

View 2 Replies View Relatedrun VMWare ESXi and have installed Ubuntu 10.10 in a virtual machine.People say you press CRTL+ALT+F1 to exit back to command line from the gnome login screen but this never works for me.If I do something like "sudo service gdm stop" it just delivers me to the desktop background almost like the machine has hung, no menus toolbars, mouse or anything.Basically what I want to be able to do is start up the machine with command line, and go into gnome on occasion and exit back out to command line to save resources, this is because the machine will mainly serve as a web server. I followed the guide here [URL] which tells how to make ubuntu always start at CLI, which works nicely, but I need a way to be able to get back to CLI from inside gnome.

My server have 2 Intel Xeon Quad core CPU's installed.
I have allocated 2 virtual CPU's to the VM. My VM is also set to Linux 64bit.
I have had problems getting Fedora 12 installed on esxi. I have 20gb of hd space and 2gb of ram. Everytime I try to load Fedora, it freezes during the install. I don't know if maybe I'm downloading bad torrents or what. Has anyone ever ran across this issue? Is there a different source I should be downloading from?

Please insert the CentOS CD and press OK to retry."
I have tried it with the image on the datastore, a unc-path and as physical cdrom.I have tested all modes in the vmware cdrom settings (passthrogh IDE or Emulate IDE) - nothing helps.

This is my first post, and i have a question with the fence software for VMWare ESXi. The fence_vmware agent only works with ESX, and redhat (in you GIT repository) has submited a new agent called fence_vmware_ng that claims to work with ESXi. But the problem is that they do not specify the version that works with that. Anybody has test the fence_vmware_ng agent for VMWare ESXi 4.0 ?, i follow the instructions here: [URL]...and i can install the software, the API from VMWARE site, etc, but in the moment when i run the agent nothing happen, The agent connects to server, i see in logs, but the off-reboot-on operations not works. Only works status operations, that return the state of a virtual machine. I have CentOS 5.3 (fully today updated) with RHCS.
