Can I install VMware ESXi on my Dell Inspiron laptop having core i3 processor which has got 4GB of RAM? I can allocate 100GB of hard disk space for that. This is just to practice and explore the features available. Can I install Vmware ESXi iso on KVM hypervisor like installing guest OS?

I have worked on Xen which is being shipped with RHEL 5.4, Is it possible to install Xen hypervisor directly on bare metal, so that we can save resources. I searched in Xen Official site, but could not recognize the product that can be directly installed on bare metal like VMware ESX.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI would like to try putting some kind of free "bare metal" visualization for desktop useage on my laptop. I've been googling about the possibilities, but still I'm not sure which would actually work in my case. I've seen VMWare ESXi which looks ok, but unfortunatelly it is meant for servers and I can't have ESXI and Sphere client on same laptop. Another candidate I found is KVM, but as much I've seen it requires VTx VTd support from hardware, which my laptop can't provide. The same requirements must be met for Citrix Xen Client, which is meant for desktop virtualizations, but because of lack of VTx and VTd, can't be used in my case. Is there any other possibility? Currently I'm using VirtualBox and VMWare player for virtualization purposes, but I would like to pull out more performance out of it, and a heavy OS on top of another heavy OS just isn't the best way.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm looking for a way to do a bare metal backup of our server using a tool such as ghost or clonezilla. The limitation is that / is on an mdadm raid 5. The only relevant info I could find on clonezilla's site was:

I have two identical servers, one has RHEL 5 and Zimbra installed and the other is currently not really doing anything. Both have hardware RAID (Adaptec) set to RAID10, identical hard drives, etc. The RHEL/Zimbra machine is set up with LVM2. Is it possible for me to hook them up on the secondary NICs and boot the second machine with Knoppix or something else, and easily tell it to duplicate the first machine onto the second, down to the last bit, or do I need to make all the partitions beforehand and dd each one separately?

But I haven't I plan on doing it now but I ran into a hardware failure and had to switch to a different set of hardware. I tried going into rescue mode using the fedora 7 install disc, but st0 for tape drives was not available. So I tried using the newest fedora distro, Fedora 13, installation disc and st0 is still not available on there. How to do a restore from tape?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm running a x86-based Debian Squeeze LAMP server which is also my gateway between my home network and the big wide world (Shorewall/Shorewall6) As you can guess, when (as it did just recently) the hardware dies and needs to be replaced, the rebuild of a machine which has been tuned and tweaked over years is "interesting", to say the least. I am looking for some software which will allow me to do a bare-metal restore of the software and setups (data is accommodated already, so that part can be ignored) I'd like to use something to create a boot disc (CD/DVD) that I can put in a new machine and get my original setup installed on the new tin automatically.
I looked at Mondo, it looks ideal, but Google hints at problems with GRUB, and incompatibilities with Debian Squeeze....so the questions are:
1) Has anyone run Mondo on Debian Squeeze successfully?
2) Is there a good howto for Mondo on Debian?
3) Is there an alternative that runs on Debian and that fits my requirements?
One of my desires is to set up my main workstation as a bare metal hypervisor because:
- Legacy issues mean I can't migrate to Linux in one step.
- The flexibility offered by virtualization is appealing.
Are there any resources out there that explain how to set up and manage fedora as a hypervisor and guests within that environment? I expect that I'll need to install a number of packages and to rebuild the kernel but I'm not aware of enough details to get started.
run VMWare ESXi and have installed Ubuntu 10.10 in a virtual machine.People say you press CRTL+ALT+F1 to exit back to command line from the gnome login screen but this never works for me.If I do something like "sudo service gdm stop" it just delivers me to the desktop background almost like the machine has hung, no menus toolbars, mouse or anything.Basically what I want to be able to do is start up the machine with command line, and go into gnome on occasion and exit back out to command line to save resources, this is because the machine will mainly serve as a web server. I followed the guide here [URL] which tells how to make ubuntu always start at CLI, which works nicely, but I need a way to be able to get back to CLI from inside gnome.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI can't install centos 5 on vmware esxi 4 server.I use the netinstall cdrom and I get the splash screen with the kernel menu.After this, I can choose a language but then I get this error: "The CentOS CD was not found in any of your CDROM drives. Please insert the CentOS CD and press OK to retry."
I have tried it with the image on the datastore, a unc-path and as physical cdrom.I have tested all modes in the vmware cdrom settings (passthrogh IDE or Emulate IDE) - nothing helps.
Console 3 shows me:

I have a freshly installed, updated Fedora 11 installation for which the VMWare Tools fails. It can't compile what it needs, either. It's running under ESXi 3.x.

The fence_vmware agent only works with ESX, and redhat (in you GIT repository) has submited a new agent called fence_vmware_ng that claims to work with ESXi. But the problem is that they do not specify the version that works with that. Anybody has test the fence_vmware_ng agent for VMWare ESXi 4.0 ?, i follow the instructions here: [URL]...and i can install the software, the API from VMWARE site, etc, but in the moment when i run the agent nothing happen, The agent connects to server, i see in logs, but the off-reboot-on operations not works. Only works status operations, that return the state of a virtual machine. I have CentOS 5.3 (fully today updated) with RHCS.

He wants me to convert the ubuntu server to a virtual machine and host it on a ESXi server. Installed CentOS 5.5 on VMware ESXi server running vsphere 4.1. Installed fine and picked the E1000 network adapter. But can't get the adapter to become active and pick up an IP address. Has anyone done this before? I can't get it to work. The ftp server admin has granted me an account for the purpose, but do not wish me to store the plain username or password in any script files for security reasons. How can I do that?

I just got 512M RAM so i thought to switch off all the programs that i most likely will not need. The big ones, i think might be, gdm, gnome, metacity. I think a plain X will suit my purpose.

On this computer I want to simply run an instance of Apache Tomcat (dedicated server) running a java application with a bunch of things like mail server, servlet container, jasper, etc. Some versions of linux have too many features that I do not need. I do not want the clutter of features I will never use. What is the bare bone version of linux distrib? would that be debian?

I have been using VMware Player for some time to host Fedora VMware images on Windows XP. I have been using Fedora 11 and 12 (both 32 and 64 bit) and recently started to use Fedora 13.
I use as a base the images provided by thoughtpolice. http://www.thoughtpolice.co.uk/
I usually install VMware tools and also keep the images updated (yum update) which sometimes changes the kernel.
I have recently had problems with the snapshots not having a network when I restore them. So far I don't have the problem with Fedora 11 and do have it with Fedora 12 (but used not to). I do have it with Fedora 13.
In each case the problem goes away when I uninstall the VMware tools and comes back when I install them again.
One of the symptoms is that SElinux complains about not being able to do something with /var/run/vmware-active-nics.
It looks to me that something is incorrect in the actions being taken when the snapshot is being restored. It does not happen every time and sometimes the network restores itself.
The network can be restored by rebooting the image.
I'm trying to access the VMWare console from firefox using the VMWare plugin. The problem is that it doesn't work on Firefox version 3.6.8. So how can I access the console?

The virtual machine is running perfectly under VMWare Player, but when I converted it to ESXi using VMWare vCenter Converter 4.0.0, the CentOS often goes into a panic right at the start of stops when setting up the hostname.

I don't know if maybe I'm downloading bad torrents or what. Has anyone ever ran across this issue? Is there a different source I should be downloading from?
