We are having some problems in running CentOS 5.3 in our ESXi 3.5 environment. The virtual machine is running perfectly under VMWare Player, but when I converted it to ESXi using VMWare vCenter Converter 4.0.0, the CentOS often goes into a panic right at the start of stops when setting up the hostname.

View 10 Replies View RelatedI can't install centos 5 on vmware esxi 4 server.I use the netinstall cdrom and I get the splash screen with the kernel menu.After this, I can choose a language but then I get this error: "The CentOS CD was not found in any of your CDROM drives. Please insert the CentOS CD and press OK to retry."
I have tried it with the image on the datastore, a unc-path and as physical cdrom.I have tested all modes in the vmware cdrom settings (passthrogh IDE or Emulate IDE) - nothing helps.
Console 3 shows me:

This is my first post, and i have a question with the fence software for VMWare ESXi. The fence_vmware agent only works with ESX, and redhat (in you GIT repository) has submited a new agent called fence_vmware_ng that claims to work with ESXi. But the problem is that they do not specify the version that works with that. Anybody has test the fence_vmware_ng agent for VMWare ESXi 4.0 ?, i follow the instructions here: [URL]...and i can install the software, the API from VMWARE site, etc, but in the moment when i run the agent nothing happen, The agent connects to server, i see in logs, but the off-reboot-on operations not works. Only works status operations, that return the state of a virtual machine. I have CentOS 5.3 (fully today updated) with RHCS.

Installed CentOS 5.5 on VMware ESXi server running vsphere 4.1. Installed fine and picked the E1000 network adapter. But can't get the adapter to become active and pick up an IP address. Has anyone done this before? I can't get it to work. View 2 Replies View RelatedWhat's the centos-approved way to handle group environment configuration? Let's say there are users in, oh, 4 different groups. Let's use the usual suspects:
accounting
warehouse
admin
netadmin
and I want to set up environment variables and maybe some pathing that are specific to a given group. So that when 'joeblow', who is a member of group 'warehouse', logs in, the pathing and environment variables (and whatever else) that is needed for users in the 'warehouse' group is set up and configured.
What I was initially looking for was an /etc/groups.d, and in /etc/groups.d is
/etc/groups.d
accounting.sh
warehouse.sh
admin.sh
netadmin.sh
As part of the login process, the group memberships for the login username would be examined, and for each hit the respective /etc/groups.d/ script would be run. I'm not seeing anything like that, so I'm assuming centos uses some other mechanism, but I'm obviously not using the proper keyword mojo. Can someone point me to where this mechanism is described?
I have setup samba and shared /var/www/html on a shared folder so that i can access the folder directly via my IDE, however i cannor write file in there, is there any better way of doing it ?

Today, when i start up I don't see the Desktop coming up, may be the GDM is failing in some way ( guess though). Xserver is working, coz I could see xclock/xyes are loading, also i have checked /etc/inittab, runlevel is set to 5. I did not see any entry in /etc/sysconfig/desktop, thus it shows DESKTOP="" I tried to change it to DESKTOP="GNOME", but it has not worked.

I have been a RPM-based distribution guy for a long time (redhat,centos,suse). We have a large shared and dedicated web environment that is starting to require more and more linux. I am in a position to switch gears and move to ubuntu if it makes sense. Things that are important to me are:
1. ease of deployment (both servers and websites themselves)
2. patch management
3. documentation
Is there a way to create a high availability environment between two CentOS machines? I don't mean just the HTTP service or just one other thing. I need the entire server synced in real time ready to take over if the next goes down.

I download and install glib-2.22.3 with command ./configure --prefix=/opt/glib-2.22.3 && make && make install
Downloaded gtk+-2.12.2 and compiling like ./configure --prefix=/opt/gtk+-2.12.2 --with-glib=/opt/glib-2.22.3
gives error:
I made $ export PKG_CONFIG_PATH=/opt/glib-2.22.3/bin:$PKG_CONFIG_PATH
And please specify if here I have to write /opt/glib-2.22.3/bin or /opt/glib-2.22.3?
And echo $PKG_CONFIG_PATH - I see my lib in $PKG_CONFIG_PATH
But still the same error.

I've searched quite a bit for how to set up Java environment variables with the newest java JDK. I installed java using the following commands:
yum groupinstall "java development" (I need it for the application I am trying to run)
yum install "java"
I have them both installed however I can't seem to get java to function. The application I am trying to run requires that I set java environment variables any solutions?
My problem is that I can't setup a diskless environment with CentOS 5.4 (server) and CentOS 3.9 (hosts). On the host, I've recompiled the CentOS 3.9 kernel, with these mods:
- added kernel level IP autoconfiguration;
- added NFS file system support;
- added Root file system on NFS;
- added e1000 driver (the host has a gigabit network card);

Just installed updates with the recent kernel update 11.3 for Centos 5.5. I have had guest additions running fine before that. Now when I try to reinstall the guest additions (which is necessary) I get the message Detected Unsupported x86 environment. how to get this going since it was running fine before the kernel update.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed CentOS 5.6 (kernel: 2.6.18-238.12.1.el5) with X Window on my HP Compaq 6710b. I also downloaded the firmware iwl3945 for my Intel Pro Wireless 3945 and manually installed it, reloaded the iwl3945 module and enabled NetworkManager. I could then get the wireless network connection worked on my graphical environment. I installed additional software manually by using the terminal window (Applications --> Accessories --> Terminal) and everything worked perfectly.
However, when I switched to text-based environment by issuing the commend "sudo init 3" (changing the user level) and logging in as root, I could not get any internet connection. I tried to use lynx and I got the error message: "Unable to connect to remote host". I am a complete newbie in Linux and I tried to google and search for solution within centos.org but I could not find.
I have had problems getting Fedora 12 installed on esxi. I have 20gb of hd space and 2gb of ram. Everytime I try to load Fedora, it freezes during the install. I don't know if maybe I'm downloading bad torrents or what. Has anyone ever ran across this issue? Is there a different source I should be downloading from?

I use the VMware Conversion tool and everythings goes well until I try to boot it from inside the VM, the network isn't detected. Now I understand that the drivers may not be working, I'm not an expert here. Also, since this is a 7.10 install I don't have access to the Gutsy repositories anymore.
View 3 Replies View Relatedrun VMWare ESXi and have installed Ubuntu 10.10 in a virtual machine.People say you press CRTL+ALT+F1 to exit back to command line from the gnome login screen but this never works for me.If I do something like "sudo service gdm stop" it just delivers me to the desktop background almost like the machine has hung, no menus toolbars, mouse or anything.Basically what I want to be able to do is start up the machine with command line, and go into gnome on occasion and exit back out to command line to save resources, this is because the machine will mainly serve as a web server.
