Ubuntu Servers :: Server Slows Down While Moving Between Partitions?

Dec 30, 2010

im using ubuntu server 64 bit on intel atom410D. when im using my SATA DRIVE as AHCI mode while i moving 4 GB files from one partition to another my server is getting so slow that it will take me to login on ssh 2 minutes. so i have seen a thing or two about a bug on it. i changed the AHCI mode to IDE mode and now it seems to work better.

Ubuntu Servers :: Moving Files From One Server To Another

Mar 10, 2011

I'm moving my site to a new VPS and need to learn how to move the files from my current server to the new one. I'd rather not download everything to my computer and then re-upload everything... seems like a lot of wasted time. There has to be a way to copy between the two servers, but how? I have heard someone mention rsync... is that a program I could use? If so, how?

Ubuntu :: Moving Files Between Partitions

Jan 14, 2011

I have windows 7 and am soon to partition a large amount of my drive over to linux. I'd rather all of my computer be linux but I'm unsure how to get my files to my other partition, I don't have a thumbdrive and my email doesn't have much space. I have 300 gbs of room, 150 will be linux, how do I get the 100 gigs moved from my windows partition to my linux so I have more space on my linux.

Ubuntu :: Moving A File Between Partitions?

Apr 19, 2011

My temp file is currently located int the root partition which is a a relatively small partition. As it is, if my root partition id more than half full I am unable to make a backup of the whole system. I would like to move that folder into the home partition and maybe even make it a hidden folder. Since a lot of apps depend on the other folders within the temp folder - what I am wondering about is whether I can just move the folder or if I need to be concerned that those apps will not be able to find the folder then. Would I end up needing to go into every app that uses it and change settings? Is there things within the o/s that use it that I would need to reconfigure or something?

Now, GRUB is currently on XBMC Live. I have terminal and root access if needed, and a "Live CD" ready to use. What I want to know is how I can move GRUB, preferably on its own partition but it can go back the the first partition.

Ubuntu Installation :: Moving / Resizing Partitions Win7?

Aug 29, 2010

I have 1 HD with the following OSes, each on his own partition:

p1 WinXP
p2 Win7
p3 Ubuntu
p4 Ubuntu Studio
p5 Unallocated (not actually a partition)

I intended to create a 5th partition, formatted as NTFS, for data. That's when I found out that Windows only supports 4 partitions per disk (yeah, I know, should've looked it up first). On Win7 Disk Management applet, they're all listed as "Primary Partition".

I've come up with a few possible solutions: s1. Move partitions p3 & p4 down towards the end of the HD, and add half of the available space to partition p2 (Win7) and the other half to partition p4 (Ubuntu Studio).

s2. Move partitions p3 & p4 to the end of the HD, and add all available space to partition p2 (Win7).

s3. Increase partition p4 (Ubuntu Studio) to take up all the available space.

My questions:

q1. Win7 Disk Management applet gives me no option to move or resize (other than shrink) the partitions. Does this mean I'll have to use another partition manager (e.g., gparted)?

q2. If I move the partitions p3 & p4 (both Ubuntu), will there be any impact on grub?

q3. Is there any way to turn partition p4 to extended instead of primary? If so, what are the consequences?

Debian :: Safely Back Up Partitions Before Moving Them?

Jan 28, 2011

On my laptop, squeeze has /, /boot, /usr, /home and I think /tmp /var on separate partitions. I want more space for apps and to not have to be so frugal with /home. Earlier this week I shrank sda1, freeing up 40 GB. I wanted to start moving the squeeze partitions, but GParted logically enough denied it since they were mounted, duh. I'm glad for that, because I was getting overeager and hadn't made even a full system backup.

This is one of those situations where choice, while good, makes it hard to get started. I wouldn't mind using dump, but doesn't it inefficiently copy the whole partition regardless of empty space? I figure tar could do as well, but is it a problem that it doesn't preserve all the meta info? As a starting point, I'd like to have an "quick" and safe way to make sure that if something happens while moving partitions, I can do a restore. I can progress to more optimal solutions later on, like semi- or fully automated incremental backup.

So what is a sure-fire way to do this while preserving all info? Should I stick with something like clonezilla, can I manage it from within Debian (CLI, ready-made script, GUI), is there a still better way?

CentOS 5 :: Moving /var And /usr Partitions To Different Hard Disk?

Apr 3, 2009

Especially /var because I am running a MYSQL server on this box. I want to know if there is a safe procedure to follow to move these partitions from the current sda2 and sda3 that they are now to sdb2 and sbd3 because this is a much bigger disk. I don't want to break MYSQL and I don't want to be down for a long period. I have heard of some people suggesting a sym link to a /newvar and /newuser on sdb but I have also read this will not work when moving to a different physical drive.

Server :: Server Slows And Timed Out ?

May 13, 2010

I have a box running, within this box I serve approx 18 sites. Starting few months ago. the memory usage seems to climbs up everyday. I've check my cron, and I don't have any cron that runs everyday (but hourly cron that only did checking external server's availability via wget). The only new thing that I've add was a backup script to dump mysql database, which occurs weekly. (I can post it's script if needed).

Here is my weekly memory chart [url]

And lately things are getting worse, everytime I did this:

Code:

At least one of my site returns with timeout. When I visit the site using my browser, the site is actually reachable but it takes about 20 seconds to load (my wget use timeout 10 seconds so it will surely returns with timeout). Each time one or two sites downs randomly. But about two-three small sites dominates - their chance to get slowed seems to be higher than the rest 15 sites.

Is there any way I can detect the problem? I really don't have any idea...

My box runs on CentOS release 5.4 (Final)

Ubuntu :: Join Partitions And "moving" Grub

Mar 29, 2010

Here's my fdisk -l:

Code:

Now, i'd like to join partitions sda7 and sda8 in a single partition. However, it seems that GRUB is residing on sda8, where there is a Ubuntu installation I don't need anymore, while I use the Ubuntu 9.10 installation on sda7.

To make it more clear, I see two /boot/grub dirs on both partitions, but my pc seems to use the one on sda8.

What's the correct way to handle this problem?

I believe I use Grub1.97 but I don't know if the system is showing me the "wrong" grub (on sda7) instead of the one that's really used.

Ubuntu Servers :: Moving Var/www And MySQL Databases

Aug 12, 2010

Quick searches did not bring forth any standard solution.

I have installed Ubuntu Server 10 (x64) using LVM with two disks (this is a Virtual Machine on VMWare ESXi4)

During install I selected only disk 1, and LVM guided Installation Added LAMP and SSH

Server gives only a text mode configuration, great if you are a linux guru, but I am not so it took a bit to find a stripped down GUI. None could be found but I did the following:

apt-get install xorg gdm gnome-core (minimal Gnome install)
apt-get install gnome-system-tools (users and *****s, time)
apt-get install gnome-network-admin (network config)
apt-get install update-notifier (updates)

[Code].....

I have created a similar system with Ubuntu, now I wish to move the var/www directory to sda1, and the databases from MySQL.

Ubuntu Servers :: Moving Raid System To A New Host?

Aug 3, 2011

A while back I successfully set up a software raid (mdadm) install of ubuntu server on a cheap Compaq machine. I'm pretty sure it's running an nForce 430 chipset. Anyway, I put 3 2TB drives in it and set up two arrays: a small raid1 array for /boot and a raid5 array occupying the rest of the drives.

One point of note here is that the raid1 array never seemed to "take hold": the partition is empty, and the system has been booting entirely from the raid5 array. I'm not sure if this is relevant or not: just throwing it in there in case it is.

Anyway, I recently upgraded my desktop PC, and planned to hand down the Q6600 and DG33TL motherboard from it to the server. I did the hardware upgrade, but now the system will not boot. My question is: why.

Boot fails with the following error message:

"No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key"

This to me suggests that it's not even getting to the point of running grub2: the mobo itself just isn't finding anything it considers to be bootable.

I've tried all combinations I can think of of configuring the SATA support in the BIOS (modes include IDE, ACHI and RAID, all in combination with UEFI boot enabled and disabled). The system does detect the three drives: it lists them in the BIOS config screen.

I've booted from an ubuntu rescue USB drive and I'm able to see the drives and even assemble the array. I can mount the LVM partitions therein and do what I'd normally be able to do with them.

Everything *seems* fine: it just can't boot.

Grub2 is something of a mystery to me, so I'm not exactly sure what I need to do to get it booting again, if indeed it is a problem with grub.

Ubuntu Servers :: Moving Websites From Shared Host To Xen Based VPS

Nov 12, 2010

I am moving some websites from a shared host to a newly configured Xen based VPS with Ubuntu 10.04. A steep learning curve but I am getting there! I have a couple of sites installed on the new server and want to test them out, from what I understand I should be able to edit /etc/hosts on my desktop computer (running Ubuntu 10.04) which should automatically redirect my browser to the new server. But it doesn't seem to work.

This is what I appended to the /etc/hosts file:
12.34.56.78 www.xxxx.com

I thought that this should send any requests for www.xxxx.com to 12.34.56.78? Some googling indicated that the browsers I am using may be using DNS caching, ignoring the hosts file. I've tried clearing the cache with Chromium 7.0.517.44 (64615) and Firefox 3.6.12, and even installed a plugin in Firefox to block DNS caching.

General :: Cannot Log In After Moving Server?

May 6, 2010

We are really scratching our heads on this one.We moved 3 Dell PowerEdge servers with Fedora 12 x86_64 from one datacenter to another.2 of them are fine but the 3rd we cannot log into any more. The KDE login screen comes up,e user names are shown, but our passwords don't work.Going to the console, we cannot log in as root with the password either. Also, I set up shared keys for ssh between the 3 boxes so that I could ssh between machines without entering my password -- that doesn't work either. This one is one of the head scratchers since /home is on a different disk.I'm 1,600 miles away and the tech that went into the cage to try from the console does not know Linux. Dunno how he got picked...

What exactly would have been corrupted to cause this behavior -- unable to login locally AND ssh authorized_keys no longer works?Oh, and apparently they were initially able to get into the machine from the console after the move since they were able to configure the NICs. But now we can't.We know how we can get a root login on a reboot from GRUB, but we don't know what to look for as far as what might be wrong with the system once we're in

Ubuntu Servers :: Migrating From LVM To Normal Partitions - Boot Not Complete

Feb 20, 2010

I have an Ubuntu 9.10/64 Server configured with LVM in a 1Tb sata disk in my home server. For a simple server, LVM adds complexity if you need to recover your system, so I decided to migrate from LVM to normal partitions. I have another 1Tb disk to copy my system disk. In the backup disk, i have created same size partitions and trasfered files from /boot and root volumes with rsync, presenving perms etc... and excluding /dev /proc /sys etc... I have then modified /etc/fstab to mount new UUID's and reinstaled grub via live CD and chroot.

At this point, when I replace my system disk with backup one, the boot process start as usual, but when it starts loading services the boot process does not continue. The system is not "frozen". If I press intro, there is a line feed on screen. If I mount the backup disk in another system, there is nothing writed to /var/log/syslog or dmesg files during the boot process. I can change terminal with <alt>F2 but there is no login. In console, with backup disk I get:

Ubuntu Servers :: Make SSD Root And Mount HD Partitions / Filesystems

Jun 28, 2011

I'm setting up an Ubuntu server to replace my aged Pentium IV Slackware box. It's a Dell Inspiron 560 with modest core-2 duo processor, 8 gigs of ram, and a pair of good sized hard disks. I came upon a good deal on a couple of 40gig Intel SSDs. I'd like to use one in the server. I'd like to use the SSD for the relatively invariant stuff, because they write slow, and are life-limited in the # of writes. So:
/bin
/usr/bin
/boot
/etc
/lib
/usr/lib
/usr/local/lib
/mnt
/opt

The best way IMHO to achieve this would be to make the SSD the root, and mount hard drive partitions/filesystems to it to places such as:
/var
/media (Here you read and write giant files. Hard disks do this just fine. One will work especially fine if one particular hard drive is dedicated to this.)
/root
/home
/tmp

A quick "df" yields a list of filesystems. There are four that are not tied to any device!
/dev
/dev/shm
/var/run
/var/lock

(df also discloses that the root filesystem is presently standing at 502megs. Guess it'll fit in a 40-gig SSD). These deviceless filesystems worry me. Are they created magically on boot? What's required to make the system magically create them on boot? If I copy the filesystem over to the SSD and redo the grub config, will it Just Work? Web searches reveal subtleties WRT mount points.

General :: Moving From Windows Server?

Nov 16, 2010

I am an experienced Windows Server user/admin (over 12 years). I have touched Linux here and there and know my way around the "GUI" portion of it; which is not to say much.

In Windows I am not just a GUI guy and have been using script and command line since the DOS days.

I want to learn Linux Server internals just as I do in Windows Server. Most of the books/guides I find are geared toward moving windows desktop user to Linux. Most linux books that I have come across are not for porting your knowledge from Windows servers to linux but instead they start to teach you linux from abc and then I lose interest because I know the basics.

what I should start so that I can pick the right distro for a server, configure it to be a solid server and deploy/manage it appropriately? I plan to use this knowledge at customer sites instead of just at home.
