I'm setting up an ubunutu server (tomcat, mysql etc) which has been going very smoothly I must say. I plan to do manual updates over ssh using "sudo apt-get update" and "sudo apt-get upgrade" but I believe sometimes these update will need a complete machine: how can I tell if I need to reboot the server after an update _using the command line_?
View 3 RepliesI just rented a godaddy dedicated, the ubuntu variety comes loaded with 8.04...(& I need PHP 5.3)Followed the directions here: URL...I did have to change my sources.list, everything after that went as expected (not like i'd know what to expect)At one point it asked if I wanted to update my grub/menu.lst to the release version, or use my old one, I updated it.Once the upgrade completed, I checked the menu.lst again to ensure it was gonna boot 10.04 (as warned by the guide)However once I sent reboot, I couldn't SSH back in, I waited 5m, 15m, tried again, still couldn't SSH then I had the server power cycled via my godaddy control panel, and still nothing, attempts on port 22 timed out & other ports were refused.
I think I overlooked something because, from what I've read here and there this is technically possible, I also just found this guide here:URL...The first user comment (above link/guide) seems to have a tip for what I'm trying.Anyways had the server re-provisioned via my control panel & I'm about to try again, only this time. uh, check the SSH settings post upgrade/pre restart?
Alright, so I upgraded my old fedora 10 server to Fedora 11 with a netinstall CD, but now service httpd restart is broken. I already had to delete the old config file and reinstall apache, but now I can't restart it. I can kill it and then start it manually, but it never stops the running instance and fails to bind the port. I know it's because /var/run/httpd/htpd.pid is in the wrong place, which would be /var/run/httpd.pid, but do I have to make a symlink every time I want to restart it? I edited all the config files to point to the right place, but the system does not honor them. What do I do?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI run Ubuntu 9.04 on with proprietary NVidia driver 180.44.When I change anything in the nvidia-settings, e.g. screen resolution, brightness, second screen etc, everything works fine - except for the fact that I can't play any video files in any player. Sound is there, players don't display any error messages, but the image is black. Flash video within browsers is fine, though.Things go back to normal with the new settings kept after restarting X. However, having to restart X and lose my desktop set up every time when I just want to connect my laptop to my office screen is highly inconvenient.Is this a bug or expected behaviour that I have to live with?

Now I need to know how to start this connection using command-line. I intend to schedule auto restart of the connection for my night unlimited connection.
I am currently running multiple VPS's of which one is a Hardy based LAMP install with PLESK. I have just one gripe about running Hardy on this VPS: PHP 5.2 is horribly outdated!! It has 5.2.4 in the repos, whilst 5.2.14 was released a while ago. As an LTS server distro you would expect these kinds of packages to be updated to ensure security? Please don't tell me I can use Dotdeb, it was never meant for Ubuntu and I have had problems with it in the past.

I have been running Ubuntu 9.10 for a while now. Today, I ran updates on my computer and also requested the upgrade to 10.04. Unfortunately, a few hours into it my computer hung. I had no choice but to reboot. When I did so the computer started a 10.04 screen and then went to a 'command line' for me to login. I am able to login, however, all i have is the 'command line'. What can i do now? Can I restart the upgrade from the 'command line'?

View 1 Replies View Relatedi am an ubuntu nooby, out of curiosity i installed ubuntu 11.04 alpha3 last night. Yes, i will definitely never install an alpha version unless i wish to test it! Frankly said, i first installed 386 version on a notebook which runs just fine. So I thought why not install the 64 bit version on my pc.
Unfortunately, the system did not finish the first reboot in order to complete the installation. First it always stopped at "checking battery state". There, I read that this bug is already fixed: [URL]... I came across this thread: [URL]... So I pressed Alt +F2 in order to log in and performed sudo apt-get update followed by sudo apt-get upgrade. Everytime there was a new update I hoped, that this will fix the issue. But when I shutdown the system with sudo shutdown now -h and restart again there is no progress.The only thing that changed is that the system no stops at "Stopping userspace bootsplash", whatever that means?
Last week I could burn dvd's and cd's and had no problem. I did the latest kernal upgrade for Ubuntu 10.04 yesterday and today I cannot get K3B or Brasero to recognize any type of medium weather blank or filled. Looked on the forum and there appears a bug in the kernal. Is there a workaround? If so how do I use it.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI had a working ubuntu 8.04.x system. I ran the update manager to upgrade to 10.04.1 LTS. Everything seemed to run fine up to the point where it needed a restart. Upon restart, it spews out a stream of log messages, changes the font of the log messages already displayed, and then the screen goes blank and the system does not respond to keyboard or mouse. It appears as if the system is trying to set up the monitor and messes up.
If I ESC into grub after BIOS boot, I have the option of booting two different kernels: 2.6.32-27-generic and 2.6.24-28-generic. The original ubuntu 8.04 kernel was 2.6.24-24-generic(though I did do some updates might that be the 24-28 kernel?).
Booting the 32-27 kernel results in the behavior described above.
Booting the 24-28 kernel produces a stream of log messages that scroll past to fast to read and drops into ash. One of the last messages is: !ALERT /dev/disk/by-uuid/ xxxxxx does not exist -which is true because there is very little in the /dev directory.
I'm using Xubuntu Natty at the moment, on an Acer Aspire 5739G. Figured I would go to Realtek's site and get the most recent soundcard driver, since the built-in subwoofer has never worked on Linux for me.
I used the automatic install script, then when it tried to probe for other devices, suddenly I had no sound.

Figuring the system wouldn't allows itself to be shutdown till it was ready i told it to do a restart. i'm running 2 raid 1's, 1 for the boot partition and 1 for fedora.End result it wont boot the newer core goes straight here

and the old core boots does a black screen with some text saying ???, then goes blue screen outline of fedora symbol filling in then pulses and shows the symbol and then just sits there.tell me this isn't the end of the os and there is a way to "recover" it or save it somehow.

so I have Ubuntu 9.10 on my Dell inspiron 1150 and I wanted to upgrade to 10.04. I do the upgrade with the update manager and it dose all the installing. It restarts and goes to the purple screen with the white and red dots for about a minute, then it goes to a blank screen and sits there. i let it sit over night and it still didn't do anything! I've tried booting from CD and it dose the same thing! its bugging the heck out of me!

Upon restart of my computer my wireless didn't work (and still doesn't) and I cannot use the desktop effects anymore (probably the graphics driver). Is there any way I can fix those problems, or downgrade my system so everything just works? I'm using Fedora 11 KDE (64-bits). And I've kept a list of all updates. Ok, I figured that it was a different version of the kernel, the update set the other kernel to default. I'm back to 2.6.29.6-217.2.8.fc11.x86_64 and everything works.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI've got a headless server (32 bit 9.04/9.10, can't remember) that started refusing SSH and HTTP connections a few days ago, and I'm just getting around to hopefully fixing it. The problem is that I can't even connect to the darn thing. I've plugged in a mouse, keyboard, and monitor, but the monitor tells me that it has no signal. I know the monitor works with the computer, as I used the same one to set up the server.
Just for kicks, I even tried to put in a live CD, but that didn't help. Any ideas on how I can connect to this thing?

I own a ubuntu-server (2.6.35-22-server x64) - a home router / NAS / etc assembled at the mini-itx motherboard with no attached keyboard / display.The problem is that the system does not detect the occurrence of SD-card in a USB-card reader. Card reader is normally detected and visible in the system.When I insert SD-card in cardreader, in "dmesg" and, accordingly, "udevadm monitor" does not display any events.If reboot with connected SD, everything works fine, but, of course, there is no event when removing SD.On the forum topics if problems arise, it is only with automounting. I updated my Slackware installation to 13.37 today. I was running current (a few weeks old).
I recently bought a new set of 2.1 speakers, so i thought of re-running alsaconf and then alsamixer.

Any time I try and restart the Shorewall it takes forever. Sometimes I have to reboot the File Server as its faster.In the shorewall-init.log it seems to stick on the loading modules and goes no further. Anyone come accross this before.I have Ubunut 8.04LTS - everything seemed to be working OK until I installed NFS, NIS, AUTOFS - but I can't be 100% sure.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Server 10.10 64-bit. After installation, I set up my config file (/etc/samba/smb.conf), and tried to restart Samba:

There was nothing to restart though - the file /etc/init.d/samba wasn't there!
Purged the package and re-installed. Tried reformatting and adding Samba as a pre-installed package. Trying to find the server guide for 10.10, but no dice. Did something change for Samba in 10.10?

This was working perfect and all of a sudden stops. Now when I try and start this service it simply hangs. I have searched and found a ton of reasons why this could be. No fix yet as worked.

It was all working fine on my lan until I tried to set ssh to listen on a different port (I read it was safer to do so if you wanted access from the internet). Now I cannot ssh into my server and as far I can tell using webmin the ssh process is no longer running and I cannot restart it. I have restored my unmodified sshd_config file. After restoring my original config file and rebooting I am back and working.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI upgraded to 13.1 and found the restart, shutdown buttons do not work. I have to resort to the terminal commands init 6, or poweroff. I then tried to install flash plugin. I modified the slackbuild script as per normal. Then issued the following command which seemed to succeed. But when I try to play utube movie it says flash is not installed. Do I need to rebuild the system?

I've been using ubuntu for a couple of years rather successfully on my dual-boot Vista/Ubuntu. It upgraded to 8.0(4?) LTS, 10.04LTS and I kept it there until this afternoon I followed the instructions on the ubuntu site to open up a terminal and update-manager --somearg to provide me with a nice little "Upgrade" button on the update manager. I clicked said button per the instructions, let it do it's downloading and whatever else it does. The last step of the installation is a system reboot. I let it do that, and then my grub menu comes up as more-or-less this:

with a blinking cursor under the S for a LONG time (used the power switch after ~40 mins). I tried the second 2.6.32-32 option for recovery mode. It spit a bunch of gibberish to the screen for a couple seconds and then stopped, presumably doing the same thing, just with 100% more gibberish. I tried booting into Vista, that worked fine. Just to reiterate, I've not yet seen a 10 LTS login screen or desktop, and can't get one yet (just a "Starting up ...") Just to add, I did try searching, but since the only info I had to go on was 8 LTS to 10 LTS upgrade, and "Starting up ...", well those are just hard keywords to get any meaningful info.
