Ubuntu Servers :: New Email Server Not Receiving / Get That?

Jan 29, 2010

I am setting up a new email server by following the Flurdy guide. I can send but I can't receive. I can telnet in with both the IP address & telnet mail.domain.com 25 I'm not using or loading shorewall because I will be relying on the firewall that is in the router. I have been following the test section of the flurdy tutorial. I am tailing the mail.log file and only see the status as being different from the example

"status=bounced (mail for domain.com loops back to myself)"

It seems like it is getting through to the server but then getting rejected.

Ubuntu Servers :: Not Receiving Mail Exim

Feb 4, 2010

I've setup Exim4 as an MTA on my VM which has a static IP. I've pointed the MX records both idential to this static IP. I can send out via command line on the VM using Exim commands and receive the mail in my home account no problem, it also displays the correct from address ie rich@mydomain.co.uk

So I'm not sure what's going on with receiving the mail. If I send a mail from my home email to rich@mydomain.co.uk (not real address), I don't get a bounce or anything, it just goes out never to be seen again.

My program is creating 4 threads per transaction. Threads doing nothing but simply sleeping.

Now, when transaction ends, I want to wake up all the threads from sleeping. For this I am using pthread_kill() to wake up the threads using signal SIGUSR2.

Problem raises when I put more transactions(eg. 100 trans). My process gets hangup.

Ubuntu Servers :: Dovecot - Outlook - POP3 - Extremely Slow Receiving?

Jul 11, 2011

recently I've replaced an old windows mailserver with a new one running 10.04 LTS (postfix - dovecot) but I got a strange problem with MS Outlook 2003 and 2007 on Win XP. These MUAs receive new messages extremely slow. Some of messages are received repeatedly. All I found in /var/log/mail.log is login and then (after 1 minute) disconnection for inactivity. No errors.:

Jul 11 10:36:51 dovecot: pop3-login: Login: user=(user@domain.org), method=NTLM, rip=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx, lip=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx Jul 11 10:37:07 dovecot: POP3(user@domain.org): Disconnected for inactivity top=0/0, retr=1/5434, del=0/12, size=954793 nothing more. And outlooks wait and wait reporting "receiving". What they are waiting for? Is there something dovecot should send them?

At the same time Mozilla Thunderbird and Opera Mail on the same network with the same setup don't have any problems. I just don't get it. Does anyone know what to do to get it work please?

CentOS 5 :: No Updates In A While - Check The Updates That Are Released?

May 13, 2010

I'm running CentOS 5.4 and noticed that for the past month there haven't been any new updates showing up either on 'yum check-update' or 'yum update' (I'm interested in basic and security updates). Although this may be right, I wonder if there is an online reference where I can check the updates that are released for CentOS (security bulletins) and make sure if there is anything wrong with my update system.

CentOS 5 Hardware :: Receiving "wrong File System Type" Messages?

Feb 9, 2010

I tried to post this then couldn't find it anywhere, so I will try again. I am wondering if there is a way to determine what file system type was put on a volume when the file system was made? I have a MD0 device that wouldn't mount. I was receiving "wrong file system type" messages.

I tried df but this only works with mounted file systems correct? I am looking for a command to run on a drive/volume that is not mounted so I can figure out what file system is on it.

This time I was able to: mount /dev/md0 /mnt/storage without and entry in the fstab file. I then just entered mount and it displayed the file system as jfs.

Is there another way to determine the file system type?

CentOS 5 :: Fonts Smaller After Latest Updates To Centos 5.6?

Apr 17, 2011

After doing an update a couple of days ago (had previously upgraded to 5.6), the font size in firefox (file forward reload, etc), terminal and the panel (using xfce) are significately smaller. Searching the web, mail lists and the forums have not resulted in finding anyone else with this problem. I did notice that glibc has a bug that is currently being worked on at Redhat but it is unclear if the font problem I am seeing is related. Note also, that the initial upgrade to Centos 5.6 was successful.

Ubuntu Servers :: Get Updates From Local Server?

Jun 7, 2010

Heres my situation. I have around 30+ systems running Karmic and more coming online everyday. I'd like to be able to have these updated via the local network to conserve net bandwidth. Is it possible to setup a single system which will download updates I specify, then make them available to the other systems on my network via some kind of local repo?

Of course I'm not looking to download EVERY repo, just the essential updates to the core OS. I really just want to eliminate that 45 min/256 file download that takes place each time I install a new system.

Ubuntu Servers :: FTP Account For WWW Content Updates?

Sep 17, 2010

I don't have much experience in Linux administration, but I needed to create a simple www server. It's is installed on a dedicated machine running Ubuntu Server 10.04.1 x64. I've got a problem with creating and setting ftp account to access /var/www. I've read that I shall not change the owner nor the access permissions to that folder. I've also tried changing /var/www permissions but even when I had access I could not modify/overwrite nor delete files which I've uploaded (I could upload and download/view). Currently it seems to work, but I've chown'ed /var/etc to my wwwuser user account (as I remember originally it was owned by root). It works but wwwuser must have a shell assigned (/bin/sh or /bin/bash), without it (/bin/false) he cannot log on to the ftp account. So here goes my question - who should own /var/www, what permission should this folder have and how to make it work using vsftpd? What is local_umask=022 in vsftpd.conf?

Ubuntu Servers :: No Connection To SSH After Updates / Reboot

Apr 2, 2011

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. Last night I was doing some admin on this box, it's running apache and ASSP for spam filtering. Once I finished I started some updates.I checked for updates and applied them, but fell asleep. This morning, my session had timed out at continue. I reconnected and saw a message stating a reboot was required.I've rebooted, my usual services are running, eg apache and ASSP. I can view pages on apache and the admin page for ASSP. I'm remote from the system, so connecting over the internet and when I try to connect, it fails.

Quite urgent, however at least my services are working. However I'm not happy that I can't access the system myself.I don't know if this is my own fault for leaving updates unattended or if an update caused the problem. Thanks.

I've tried to install the updates. But one of the messages about updates always says there's updates available. Also the number seem to be static and never change.

Is it right --> in case of new releases and limited resources the updates for supportet releases are not highest priority and so we have to wait a little or compile it manually from rh source?

Ubuntu Servers :: Freshclam Won't Fetch Updates - Uses Wrong DNS

May 16, 2011

On a new machine running Ubuntu 10.04.2, the freshclam program (in clamav-freshclam version 0.96.5+dfsg-1ubuntu1.10.04.2) won't do updates to the database. It fails on DNS queries. DNS works OK for other programs. The tcpdump command shows that it sends the queries to 127.0.0.1 instead of the correct DNS servers specified by /etc/resolv.conf. Of course it doesn't get an answer because it is asking the wrong IP address.

There is also a --no-dns option, but that didn't help/

Do I need to tell ot what the DNS servers are, somewhere?

Why would it query only 127.0.0.1 for DNS?

Red Hat :: CentOS 5 / RHEL 5 - YUM Updates Through Proxy?

Nov 28, 2008

I have been trying all day but so far I am unable to configure yum to use a proxy server to retrieve updates.Due a recent compliance mandate direct internet access had to be removed for a pool of our Cent/RHEL servers. I have added the http_proxy environment variable in /etc/profile using:

export http_proxy=http://ourproxy:8080
export ftp_proxy=http://ourproxy:8080
export gopher_proxy=http://ourproxy:8080

I am using the FQDN of the proxy server, and i can ping that FQDN from the CLI without a problem. When I do this and I reboot the server I can get to the internet through the proxy using links/lynx. Yum however stalls out after loading plugins. I have read in a few places that I need a trailing / after the port number above, adding this and rebooting has no effect.

So I tried specifying the yum.conf file... [URL]. When I do this yum still tries to contact the redhat/cent network directly. No behavior change. If I use tcpdump I can see the server I am running yum on try to directly connect without the proxy, which times out for good reason.

The proxy server I am running is squid, but I can see the server I am running yum on blatantly ignore any proxy settings I have tried so far. I am really in a hole on this one as I have to get several updates to fix vulnerabilities found during our last scan.
