Ubuntu Servers :: No Connection To SSH After Updates / Reboot

Apr 2, 2011

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. Last night I was doing some admin on this box, it's running apache and ASSP for spam filtering. Once I finished I started some updates.I checked for updates and applied them, but fell asleep. This morning, my session had timed out at continue. I reconnected and saw a message stating a reboot was required.I've rebooted, my usual services are running, eg apache and ASSP. I can view pages on apache and the admin page for ASSP. I'm remote from the system, so connecting over the internet and when I try to connect, it fails.

Quite urgent, however at least my services are working. However I'm not happy that I can't access the system myself.I don't know if this is my own fault for leaving updates unattended or if an update caused the problem. Thanks.

I use ssh, vsftpd, apache2 and samba ... nothing start after reboot, I have to start it manually. I don't know what happened and if is it even direct result of some updates. I have another machine like that at work and there was no problems after resent updates.

Ubuntu :: Fails To Reboot After Updates Gets Stuck In Grub?

Mar 9, 2010

Just installed Ubuntu a month ago (installed within windows), and for the 2nd time it has gotten stuck in grub upon restart after doing an automatic update. Last time, I reinstalled from the CD, but I can't do that every time. Learning how to start up from grub would probably be worth learning so I don't have to use the CD. But fixing the problem is most important. It makes me wonder if it was a mistake to install Ubuntu from within Windows (does this mean I have "wubu"?). I did find a webpage on booting Ubuntu from grub, but I could not get the kernel to load, regardless of if I used the instructions for wubu or not.

Fedora :: Reboot Required Notification For Auto-updates

Feb 12, 2011

I'm currently administering an Ubuntu box remotely. It's set to install security updates automatically, and it notifies me when I log in via ssh whether it has installed an update which requires a reboot. For example, if it installed a kernel update a few days ago, the update manager will touch a "reboot_required" file in /var/run, and when I ssh into the machine today I'll be greeted with a "System restart required" message. Is there a similar functionality for yum or Packagekit?

Ubuntu :: Configure Connection After Every Reboot

Mar 17, 2010

I am using Ubuntu Intrepid now, (no more Karmic, at least for some time)...

I connect to Internet through a proxy server. I have to configure my connection by going to Network Manager and then editing IPv4 settings, making the address selection manual instead of DHCP and then enter the static IP provided to me by the server and also the address of my gateway... Then I have to go to the Network Proxy under System --> Preferences and set my system proxy (Apply System Wide)...

Well that seems normal, except that I have to do the connection configuration part every time I reboot... Every time i reboot, the connection is back to default i.e.

Quote:

Name: Auto eth0
IPv4 Settings --> Method: Automatic(DHCP)

I have to change it again to

Quote:

Name: IST-LAN
IPv4 Settings --> Method: Manual
IP Address: 192.168.xxx.xxx
Netmask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.xxx.xxx

One of my friends reported the same thing to me after a fresh installation... So maybe that is a bug in the Network Manager of Interpid... I need to know a workaround, or a repair.

Ubuntu :: Keyring Preventing VNC Connection After Reboot

May 13, 2010

I have a headless Jaunty server that I need to access from both mac and PC clients. If the server has been rebooted, I can SSH into it, but I can not VNC into it unless I unlock the keychain. The problem is that I can't figure out how to unlock the keychain from SSH connections, so the only available method is to attach a keyboard to the physical box and enter the keychain password at the server itself. Is there a Terminal command that I can use to unlock the keychain? I have seen references to the 'security' command but that appears to be unavailable to Jaunty?

Is there an even better method than a Terminal command? I don't want to be putting passwords into the Terminal log if I can help it. Ideally, I would connect via SSH, confirm the keychain somehow, and tunnel in through VNC.

Ubuntu :: 10.10 - Broken Wired Connection After Reboot

Nov 27, 2010

I just installed 10.10 on a desktop machine, dual boot with Win XP. Everything went well, it connected and did all the system updates etc. Then one time I rebooted and it wouldn't connect. I've tried rebooting again several times, tried unplugging the modem/router from the power and from the computer then reconnecting everything and starting it up again, no joy. I booted from the Live CD and it connects without any problem, likewise from Win XP. My Network Connections shows 'Auto eth0' and below is the ifconfig output.

Ubuntu Servers :: SSL Setup - Connection Error Unable To Make A Secure Connection To The Server

Feb 10, 2011

I am running an Ubuntu Server on a VirtualBox VM running on my windows machine. So I've created a self-signed certificate using the following tutorial: [URL]

From this tutorial I'm left with 3 files:
server.key
server.csr
server.crt

Then I found this very similar tutorial that has an extra bit on installing the certificates in apache: [URL] So I followed it's instructions which boil down to this:

[Code]...

So I'm thinking this should work now. However in Chrome I get: SSL connection error Unable to make a secure connection to the server. This may be a problem with the server, or it may be requiring a client authentication certificate that you don't have. Error 107 (net::ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR): SSL protocol error. IE8 gives me a typical "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" Note that [URL] fails while [URL] works fine, so it's definitely something in my ssl setup I'm thinking.

Ubuntu / Apple :: Internet Connection For Updates And To Customise System?

Apr 4, 2010

I recently installed ubuntu studio 9.10 amd64 on my MBP 5,3 I need an internet connection for updates and to customise my system etc I tried to connect with a wired connection but for some reason I could not configure the ethernet interface. I tried to install the broadcom bcmwl-kernel-source driver by downloading it on another computer and then using a usb stick to transfer it. I had to go through installing several dependencies including dkms and linux-headers-generic. When I finally succeeded the driver showed up in Hardware privers as proprietry but was inactive. Whenever I try to active it I hit 'Activat' I authenticate and the nothing happens. It remains inactive. The wired connection is not readily available to me so it would be great if it was possible to solve this either via a usb or cd.

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Connection Requires Router Reboot?

Feb 11, 2011

I was having an issue with my wireless connection last week, and sometimes even my hardwired connection. It had seemed like every time my PC went into standby, or any low-power mode, the WiFi would stop working. I used the "power off" command and got it back and running. When I boot up the computer in the morning, I am unable to connect until I reset the wireless router. Unfortunately, I did not have the presence of mind to get iwconfig first thing in the morning, but I did reboot the laptop and grabbed iwconfig before I connected and after I connected. Now, for some reason, the router worked when I rebooted, but I had to reset it this morning. Any ideas? iwconfig below:

Ubuntu Networking :: Updates Lead To Failure In Establishing A Wired Connection

May 21, 2010

One of the (many many) problems that I had with Ubuntu 10.4 was that I wasn't able to connect using a wired. It really came to me as a huge surprise, because that's a problem that I have never encountered. I had dealings with wireless-issues in the past. But never a wired connection failed. The thing is that we (in the dormitory where I live) had a network problem recently. A hardware piece got fried and we weren't able to replace it for about 3 weeks (go figure :X ). But in the past 3 days or so we're back online. The thing is - none of my neighbours (all of them are using Windows) has network issues now. Usually it was on the contrary - I was the one who had beautiful connection while they had to deal with a load of d@ng. That said - I made a fresh install of Ubuntu 9.10. The problem got resolved and I was as happy as a chick during her first wedding night with Don Goivanni in her bed. BUT after I updated (note - update and NOT upgrade) my system, I was suddenly unable to use the wired connection. The strange thing is that the NM says that I am connected AND I even get some short bursts of network traffic (last for 2-3 seconds) but usually not enough to load even a simple web page. Ping always returns 100% loss no matter how long the package burst lasts. I have slept this night for about 3 hours looking for a solution. None has been found so far. I don't have WAPs at home so wired connection is the only way for me to use this modern thing called internet.

Debian :: Can't Get Wired Internet Connection After Reboot

Oct 25, 2015

I have been using this fresh Debian 8.2 install for 3 days without any network problems.

What I did this morning :

- Booted in my windows partition and rebooted immediately just to remove the system from the sleep state
- Mounted a NTFS hard drive and copied some file to my .wine drive_c

Thats when I noticed that my connection was down.

I verified all the physical layer. My laptop has access to the internet tried to connect on an another router with eht0, changed the wire, nothing worked.

It seems like the interface can't get a dhcp ipv4 address even when I try to force is with dhclient, I get no offer when my laptop works just fine.

- Booted on my windows partition without changing any connection and my internet was working.
- Booted back on debian still not working...

Debian Configuration :: No Internet Connection After Reboot

Feb 20, 2016

I rebooted my vServer (Debian 8) and it doesn't came back up. Well, I used the rescue console on my server and the server seems to be running fine, except the network was broken. So I tried 'ifconfig' but nothing came up. So I tried to enable my interface with 'ifconfig venet0 up', and now it appears in my ifconfig list

Code: Select allroot@i67svof:/var/www# ifconfig
venet0    Link encap:UNSPEC  HWaddr 00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00
UP BROADCAST POINTOPOINT RUNNING NOARP  MTU:1500  Metric:1
          RX packets:557 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
          RX bytes:36463 (35.6 KiB)  TX bytes:0 (0.0 B)

My HWaddr doesn't look that well :) 'ip addr' prints this result:

Code: Select allroot@i67svof:/var/www# ip addr
1: lo: <LOOPBACK> mtu 65536 qdisc noop state DOWN
    link/loopback 00:00:00:00:00:00 brd 00:00:00:00:00:00
2: venet0: <BROADCAST,POINTOPOINT,NOARP,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1500 qdisc noqueue state UNKNOWN

These are the last lines in /var/log/syslog:

Code: Select allroot@i67svof:/var/www# tail /var/log/syslog
Feb 20 11:34:16 i67svof systemd[1]: Stopping memcached daemon...

Ubuntu Servers :: FTP Account For WWW Content Updates?

Sep 17, 2010

I don't have much experience in Linux administration, but I needed to create a simple www server. It's is installed on a dedicated machine running Ubuntu Server 10.04.1 x64. I've got a problem with creating and setting ftp account to access /var/www. I've read that I shall not change the owner nor the access permissions to that folder. I've also tried changing /var/www permissions but even when I had access I could not modify/overwrite nor delete files which I've uploaded (I could upload and download/view). Currently it seems to work, but I've chown'ed /var/etc to my wwwuser user account (as I remember originally it was owned by root). It works but wwwuser must have a shell assigned (/bin/sh or /bin/bash), without it (/bin/false) he cannot log on to the ftp account. So here goes my question - who should own /var/www, what permission should this folder have and how to make it work using vsftpd? What is local_umask=022 in vsftpd.conf?
