Ubuntu Servers :: Distribution Upgrade Gone Wrong - SSH Session Died

Aug 6, 2010

I was running 8.something on my ubuntu server. Today I decided to upgrade releases! So I started it, all via ssh cos the box is about 800 miles away and it was going just fine. However - I went away from the pc for about a hour, and my ssh session died. On reconnect it starts a new ssh session - and I dont know how to reconnect to the upgrade process and finish it off.

Slackware :: Xfce Died - Xfce4-session: Fatal IO Error 11 (Resource Temporarily Unavailable) On X Server

Sep 9, 2010

I was just mucking about in xfce, trying out new window buttons in conjunction with the black theme - dusk?? - when POW! - X shut down. Rebooting didn't restore things. Error is along these lines:

xfce4-session: Fatal IO error 11 (Resource temporarily unavailable) on X server :0.0. xfwm4: Fatal IO error 11 (Resource temporarily unavailable) on X server :0.0.

Is there a config file I can edit to get away from the window button setting it dislikes, or is reinstalling xfce the only option?

Ubuntu :: Computer Died On Lucid Upgrade ?

May 4, 2010

I was put somewhat in charge of a server last semester running Ubuntu. It serves as a router and general purpose computer for a robotics lab. Yesterday, I went do dist-upgrade using the command line, and ran into a couple of bugs with gtk libraries which I fixed based on the bug reports. However, the computer decided to reboot for some reason in the middle of the upgrade and killed the running OS. I currently have it up on a Debian recovery CD. I can't get past intramfs without the CD. It is dying somewhere in rsyslog with an error about a broken pipe. I am not sure where to go from here. I will post actual error messages when I get back infront of the machine. No one knows how the machine was set up in the first place and it holds a few secrets we need to keep, so reinstall is the last option.

Ubuntu :: Xserver Died On Kernel Upgrade ?

Jul 14, 2011

When booting to kernel 2.6.38-10 I get an error about it not being able to load the nvidia drivers/kernel module. 2.6.38-8 works fine. Actually I do not even get the error unless I run 'startx' but instead have to hunt through the logs for it.

I do not even get the usual low resolution mode, just the text terminal so this is an serious issue especially since grub no longer prompts at startup for alternate boot options. Probably the worst change in Ubuntu since it makes it much harder to recover from something like this.

I think it might be due to the GTX 460 card I have, I noticed other people have had the same issue in the past with this card.

Nvidia drivers installed from the kubuntu repository version 4.1.0 NVIDIA 270.41.06.

How do I fix the drivers, or alternately what is the change in the grub menu to change the defaulted booted kernel?

Ubuntu Installation :: Run The Upgrade Manager, The 'Distribution Upgrade?

Mar 14, 2011

I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 and 2.6.35-27-generic. When I run the Upgrade Manager, the 'Distribution Upgrade' window pops up and in bold letters reads 'Running partial upgrade'.

The next line reads '>Preparing to upgrade' and sits there. Mean while, the process begins to perform a great deal of constant hard drive activity. The window's horizontal activity bar reads 'Calculating the changes' at the bottom of the 'Distribution Upgrade' window.

Ubuntu Servers :: Mysql Died Overnight On 8.04

Jan 14, 2011

After X days of blissful uptime my mysql failed on my server for some reason. I have had 0 problems with it for over a year and it simply died overnight. I have been upgrading old packages occasionally so it is possible that could have effected it. Anyway, after reading around tons about how /var/run/mysqld/mysql.sock doesn't exist and solutions to fix it I finally ended up attempting to reinstall mysql (I take regular database backups so I wan't concerned about losing data).

The typescript from this endeavor is here: [URL]. Hopefully someone knows what the heck is going on? EDIT: after pulling my hair out trying to get this to work for 5 days I decided to install simply wipe out ubuntu entirely and install 10.4 and try again. this worked, but its a horrible solution.

Ubuntu :: Accidentally Clicked Wrong Session Blank Screen?

Oct 27, 2010

Posted this in the wrong section so I'm reposting it, is that ok? I installed lxde and logged out and switched to it, but my internet wasn't working (but that's a different thread after I fix this, I was going to try installing wicd) So I tried to go back to gnome, I misclicked and accidentally started a different session. I think it said openbox/gnome, all I get is a blank screen with just the desktop background. It's set to automatically log me in, so when I restart my computer it goes back to the blank screen. How do I get back to the login screen?

Fedora Servers :: Recovering From Software RAID Failure (controller Died)

Jan 3, 2009

I had a RAID1 'device' build on two physical partitions on two drives. One of the disk controllers died and software RAID did the job - now I am working on the degraded array.

Now I want to put the old disk (sdb) back, and I am not sure what will happen. Both disks have 'raid auto' partitions. And sdb file structure from before of the failure. The raid code will find inconsistency between both partitions. What will it decide? Will it start coping from the currently running system (sda) all the data to the old one (sdb) at the boot time, as I wish?

I don't want to it to write from the old one to the new one, as some months passed and lots of changes happened to the data.

Ubuntu :: How To Upgrade Distribution

Mar 18, 2011

I have an old copy of Ubuntu Feisty Fawn 7.04 in a virtual machine that I haven't used in a long time. I want to update the distribution to the latest but I'm not seeing an option to do so under the upgrade manager or the synaptic package manager. When I attempt to refresh my package information I get an error message talking about how the repository is no longer valid. I've even tried to open the terminal and type: sudo apt-get dist-upgrade and it doesn't do anything.

Ubuntu Servers :: Restrict User Session Numbers And Allow Resuming Previous User Session?

Jun 30, 2010

I am currently in a project to set up an LTSP server with 10 thin clients. I am using Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic).

Installing server and booting clients are working fine. Now, according to the need, I have to restrict user session numbers and allow resuming previous user session.

I have achieved to do the first one, but still could not able to setup the second one. As per requirement, if some thin can have power failure, the same session should be restored back. I am confused here, if I need to focus on saving xsessions or saving gnome sessions. I am looking for a concrete solution as I am running out of time.

I am trying to upgrade my ubuntu distribution from 9.10 to 10.04 using update-manager. I have only 2G free in my / partition, and update-manager complains saying it needs 4G free in the / partition to upgrade.

I presume the space is needed to store downloaded packages. Is there any way I can change the download directory to some other partition (i have plenty of space in other partitions)?

is there a way to move distributions in a local mirror? apt-move seems only capable of rearranging the packages in /var/cache/apt/archives/ .

Debian Installation :: Fresh Install - Upgrade To Frozen Squeeze Distribution

Sep 2, 2010

Every where I look online, people are posting ridiculous non-working ways to upgrade their system from one release to another--they do not work for me and I need a definite expert reply. I am working with a fresh install of Debian Lenny/Stable and wish to upgrade to the frozen Squeeze distribution. Supplementing the word "squeeze" in place of "lenny" in my sources.list file does not work and believe this to be an inappropriate way of upgrading. I have tried upgrading apt, dpkg, and aptitude before beginning the upgrade process, cleaning dpkg cache, rebooting, etc.

After updating the above packages I tried all methods of upgrading: safe-upgrade, full-upgrade, and dist-upgrade. All produce dependency problems and try to remove the gnome-desktop package or upgrade everything else except gnome-desktop. (Other packages are also affected, gnome-desktop is the most important in this instance). As I understand it, when upgrading you can comment out the volatile repositories as well as the security updates, is this correct?--either way I have tried countless combination's off commenting/uncommenting to try to get the needed results. I do not want use sid repos or reinstall.

Ubuntu :: Distro Upgrade Gone Wrong?

Oct 23, 2010

I upgraded Netbook edition from Lucid to Maverick, and it's gone horribly wrong. It may be because I had set up the a Gnome session in Lucid so that I could add and remove applets to panel in while still having the netbook session layout.

After distro upgrade I ended up with a hybrid system with both the unity launcher AND the Lucid-style UNE launcher. Unity does not recognise any of my installed software, e.g open office or bibus in "Office". UNE launcher does. There is also no option of Gnome session at login, only Desktop and Netbook!

Ubuntu :: Monitor After Upgrade To Natty - Wrong Setting?

May 9, 2011

After upgrading to 11.04, I've been experiencing this weird issue with my monitor. Every time I reboot or turn the monitor on, the colors in Ubuntu are all wrong -- really green. If I go into my monitor's control panel and go to the "Input Color Format" setting and switch it from YPbPr to RGB things go back to normal. The problem is that I can't seem to save this setting. Every time the monitor is turned off it goes back to the wrong setting. I never had this issue before so it makes me think it may have something to do with the upgrade to Natty. The monitor is a Dell SP2208WFP and it's connected to my computer through an HDMI port. I use the Intel video driver.

I cannot start the desktop session: After upgrading from 10.04 to 10.10 (dual-boot system) via Alt+F2 as suggested on [URL]. Grub loads fine after reboot (booting Windows works, Upgrade without errors). If I boot Ubuntu (no matter which Kernel, etc.), I end up in shell (black screen + prompt, stating the new Ubuntu version) and being asked to log in. Entering my name and pw results in the shell prompt changing to my name, but nothing else. So how do I start the desktop session? Repairing packages had no effect...

Software :: Upgrade To 10.04 - Wrong FS Type

Jun 19, 2010

Just upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 and cannot mount one of my partitions. It is encrypted / decrypted in the following fashion:
Code:
# dd if=/dev/random bs=4k count=1 | gpg -a --cipher-algo AES256 -c - > /mnt/usb/keys/fs.gpg
# gpg -q -o - /mnt/usb/keys/fs.gpg | cryptsetup -v -h sha512 -c aes-xts-plain -s 512 create crypto /dev/md1
# mkfs.ext4 /dev/mapper/crypto
# mount /dev/mapper/crypto /crypto

It has been this way for a long time, survived several release upgrades. Now when I decrypt it, I have to use gpg in one command to decrypt the key to a file, then use cat in a second command to pipe to cryptsetup, as such:
Code:
# gpg -q /mnt/usb/keys/fs.gpg
# cat /mnt/usb/keys/fs | cryptsetup -v -h sha512 -c aes-xts-plain -s 512 create crypto /dev/md1

However, I can no longer mount the device:
Code:
# mount /dev/mapper/crypto /store/
mount: you must specify the filesystem type

This is how it's always been mounted. Well I know it's ext4, so I supplied that and was greeted with:
Code:
# mount -t ext4 /dev/mapper/crypto /store/
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/mapper/crypto, missing codepage or helper program, or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
dmesg | tail or so

The only item in dmesg is:
Code:
[78.212761] EXT4-fs (dm-0): VFS: Can't find ext4 filesystem

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade Gone Wrong May Have Lost Important Files

Aug 27, 2010

I have had Hardy Heron 8.04 since 2008. Few problems, but when the red arrow indicated updates I clicked on it and it was for an upgrade to 10.04.I decided to upgrade but it didn't go well.I ended up with a black screen and white letters. I didn't know what to do.I don't know many commands.I posted here but got no response.I had no access to the Internet.I decided to reinstall Ubuntu 8.04 from the CD.At one point it asked me about a 10GB partition.I didn't really understand it at that point but clicked ok.When I got the computer running again I noticed that it was a new partition with 7 GB free space. What happened to all my precious other files?

I am panicking because I read a similar thread about a Windows/Ubuntu partition and the person was worried about losing all Windows files.I did back up the files on an external hard drive but not recently. Losing them would mean I had to make up a lot of work.

Ubuntu :: Gnome Session Does Not Save Application After Upgrade To Maverick?

Jan 14, 2011

after the upgrade to maverick, gnome-session-save doesn't save applications on shutdown or logout as it did on Lucid.I've noticed the following things:

On Lucid, if I had a stopped job in a shell, the system refused to logout or shutdown, showing a confirmation window. On Maverick, the CPU goes to 100% and then the computer shuts down; on reboot, no application is saved

On Maverick, if there are NO stopped jobs in a shell, I can logout cleanly but only a few applications are saved (eg. terminal, firefox) but others aren't (eg. empathy, evolution) I've checked "Automatically remember application on exit" in "Session management" menu.
