Ubuntu :: Xserver Died On Kernel Upgrade ?

Jul 14, 2011

When booting to kernel 2.6.38-10 I get an error about it not being able to load the nvidia drivers/kernel module. 2.6.38-8 works fine. Actually I do not even get the error unless I run 'startx' but instead have to hunt through the logs for it.

I do not even get the usual low resolution mode, just the text terminal so this is an serious issue especially since grub no longer prompts at startup for alternate boot options. Probably the worst change in Ubuntu since it makes it much harder to recover from something like this.

I think it might be due to the GTX 460 card I have, I noticed other people have had the same issue in the past with this card.

Nvidia drivers installed from the kubuntu repository version 4.1.0 NVIDIA 270.41.06.

How do I fix the drivers, or alternately what is the change in the grub menu to change the defaulted booted kernel?

Debian :: Kernel And XServer Upgrade Options ?

Dec 5, 2010

I'm just wondering what the options are if one wants to try a 'newer' kernel and/or XServer version.

Either on an installed system or virtual machine (for e.g., Squeeze in VirtualBox).

On an installed system, on Debian Sqeeze (or Testing), if one wants to upgrade to 2.6.36 kernel and/or XServer 1.9, what are the options? I noticed that 1.9 is available in experimental so one has to enable and load the experimental package repository?

As for the kernel, I guess there's a few options? One includes installing the liquorix kernel? Best choice/alternative is compiling?

OpenSUSE Install :: Starting Xserver After Upgrade / Error Message That Current Kernel Can Not Be Loaded?

May 21, 2011

I was about to do upgrade from 11.3 to 11.4.I was following the guide I found in opensuse's website. I was to the point where I had to disable all 11.3 repositories and add the 11.4 at that point I forgot to change my nvidia repository ( I have a g210m graphic card).

thus after the upgrade the X could not start at all. I think this was because Yast could not find the nvidia driver.

Using text mode YaSt2 I added the nvidia driver but after restart I can not see and X running. I receive an error message that the current kernel can not be loaded!!!

I also checked in command line if there is something like Sax2.. but I couldnot find anything.

Ubuntu :: Computer Died On Lucid Upgrade ?

May 4, 2010

I was put somewhat in charge of a server last semester running Ubuntu. It serves as a router and general purpose computer for a robotics lab. Yesterday, I went do dist-upgrade using the command line, and ran into a couple of bugs with gtk libraries which I fixed based on the bug reports. However, the computer decided to reboot for some reason in the middle of the upgrade and killed the running OS. I currently have it up on a Debian recovery CD. I can't get past intramfs without the CD. It is dying somewhere in rsyslog with an error about a broken pipe. I am not sure where to go from here. I will post actual error messages when I get back infront of the machine. No one knows how the machine was set up in the first place and it holds a few secrets we need to keep, so reinstall is the last option.

Debian Multimedia :: NVidia Died With Last Kernel Update In Squeeze

Oct 21, 2010

It was no surprise that I needed to reinstall the nvidia driver after a 2.6.32-5-686 kernel update a couple days ago, but I was surprised that it didn't work. I've had to drop back to a kernel I compiled a few weeks ago, which is basically the stock 2.6.32-5-686 from that time, with a timer frequency of 1000 and desktop preemption.
Vid card is GeForce PCX 5750
Using NVIDIA-Linux-x86-173.14.22-pkg1.run

This is the command I used:
env CC=/usr/bin/gcc-4.3 sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-173.14.22-pkg1.run
(After it didn't work, I ran it with --uninstall and tried installing again. No luck with that.)

Here's the nvidia installer log (sorry about the encoding. I don't know what happened with that): [URL]
rivafb, nvidiafb and rivatv are not loaded.

I don't see it in this one, but on a previous attempt, I saw an error message that said no nvidia graphics card was found. I've been suspicious that the card is slowly dying, based on problems like gray blocks on the screen or (in an older lenny install) persistence of the contents of a window appearing inside a terminal, when I switch desktops from the one where the browser is open to the one where the terminal is open. Scrolling the artifact off-screen and back, or window-shading the terminal and then un-shading it causes it to re-draw correctly.

CentOS 5 :: Died, Kernel File Not Found \ Get:Error 13: Invalid Or Unsupported Executable Format?

Aug 31, 2011

I have a weird problem with one of my servers (normal PC hardware). I was connected remotely using Putty, doing some stuff, and all of the sudden some commands, like "ls" stopped working, giving a "file or command not found" type of message. I restarted the ssh session, only to find out I couldn't log on any more (access denied). When I got home and rebooted the system, I was greeted with this:Booting 'CentOS (2.6.18-194.el5xen)'root (hd0,0)Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83kernel /boot/xen.gz-2.6. 18-194.el5Error 15: File not foundPress any key to continue...Then I searched about this, found out that the files in /boot/grub/menu.lst did not exist at the specified location (/boot/xen.gz-2.6. 18-194.el5). Somehow I managed to find them in another place, copied them in place, and now I get:Error 13: Invalid or unsupported executable format

Ubuntu Installation :: XServer Will Not Start After Upgrade 9.10 To 10.04?

May 2, 2010

I upgraded to 10.04 and when trying to boot, the computer would hang at the splash screen. Going into recovery mode showed nothing in the log files. The Xorg and gdm logs were zero bytes but had the proper timestamp. I tried and tried, but could not get it to boot until I removed the nvidia-current package. Then the computer will boot, but the screen is partially corrupted with just a blue background. I can hit enter, then type my password and I can actually login, but I can't see a thing. I can cycle through the resolutions with Ctrl +, but the screen just still has a blue background and nothing else. Trying to boot in failsafe X mode gives the same screen. I tried putting the vesa driver in the xorg.conf, but no change.

I've tried the i915.modeset=0 boot option. I've tried the "xforcevesa" boot option, but nothing will give me a readable screen. As soon as I re-installed the nvidia-current package and ran nvidia-xconfigure, the problem came back and it hangs again. At this point, I'm stuck. I would settle for a plain VGA screen at this point, but I can't even seem to get that. I've read several posts here with similar problems and tried every solution put forth, I think, but have not found a solution. When the upgrade wanted to install the new /etc/default/grub, I kept my old one. I compared the two files at the time, but I didn't see anything new, but maybe I missed something. What new items if any does the upgrade put into /etc/default/grub?

Debian Configuration :: Kernel 2.6.32 And Xserver Freezes - Crash Fubar?

Sep 28, 2010

I run an old Toshiba Satellite M35x S114 Laptop with Debian Testing, it always runned smoothly - although it IS testing . Since the latest update to kernel 2.6.32 , the X server just freezes. The init goes all the way to gdm, and then a blank screen , no mouse pointer, no way to get out of this screen (not CTRL+ALT+BACSPACE not CTRL+ALT+F1 / F2 ... etc) just a hard reset.

I can boot to the older .30 kernel with absolutely no problem, gdm starts normally login successfull (as I am able to write this on the reffered machine and all).

Here comes the gory details:

>>> The graphic card:
lspci | grep gra
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82852/855GM Integrated Graphics Device (rev 02)
00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation 82852/855GM Integrated Graphics Device (rev 02)
>>> When it works with .30 kernel:
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log
code....

Noting that there are no more Modlines in the new Xorg.0.log

Besides, X is disabling the mouse and keyboard in the configuration.

Ubuntu :: Died After Running Update Manager ?

Apr 7, 2010

Installed from the 9.1 iso got everything set up all tickety boo. using it as a local development server. have been ignoring the update manager, but today for some reason I thought ok, do your thing fatal on restarting it gets as far as the splash screen then dies " * could not access PID file for nmbd" hit esc to get the grub thing up and tried recovery mode same deal so stuck really.

I can hit 'e' and get a basic emacs thing wit a few lines of commands, but not sure what to do there!

I'm not a big terminal user. I can do stuff I need to and leave it at that. Do I have to flatten this machine and re-install anything. Loathe to do that as I spent quite a while getting all the webby bits installed and working as I want to, adn don't really want to have to set all that up again.

Ubuntu Servers :: Mysql Died Overnight On 8.04

Jan 14, 2011

After X days of blissful uptime my mysql failed on my server for some reason. I have had 0 problems with it for over a year and it simply died overnight. I have been upgrading old packages occasionally so it is possible that could have effected it. Anyway, after reading around tons about how /var/run/mysqld/mysql.sock doesn't exist and solutions to fix it I finally ended up attempting to reinstall mysql (I take regular database backups so I wan't concerned about losing data).

The typescript from this endeavor is here: [URL]. Hopefully someone knows what the heck is going on? EDIT: after pulling my hair out trying to get this to work for 5 days I decided to install simply wipe out ubuntu entirely and install 10.4 and try again. this worked, but its a horrible solution.

Ubuntu Installation :: Jaunty 9.04 Updated And Now Firefox Died

Feb 8, 2010

I have Jaunty 9.04 and I was sitting online yesterday and the update manager came up. I let it do its thing as usual, but it seemed to have an issue with some firefox related package (having to do with branding?) and then the little flipping-out icon showed up in my tray saying that a package broke. It did not, and the firefox launcher turned into a missing puzzle brick and clicking it causes a small window to come up with the following message:

XML Parsing Error: undefined entity
Location: chrome://browser/content/browser.xul
Line Number 31, Column 1:<window id="main-window"
^
So I might have tried to uninstall firefox from synaptic or something, but this just created more errors and I don't think it worked properly anyway. Inside Synaptic, there is one listed as a "broken" package in the broken filter. It is something to do with Firefox Branding AMD64 and all that goodness.

Ubuntu Installation :: Update Process Died - Now Won't Load OS

Mar 16, 2010

I started the update process in my new Ubuntu Studio install.

My understanding of the update process is:

1) Downloads all of the update files (in my case 214)

2) It performs the necessary installation of these files.

My machine locked up at the 70% done part during step 2.

Now, when I try to boot/load the OS it stalls at the splash screen.

I am not even sure I can get to the recover part from Grub yet, but if I can...

Is there a command that can start the update process without having to download the data again?

Ubuntu :: Graphics And Wireless Drivers Both Just Died After Update

Mar 17, 2011

I installed a routine update through the update manager this morning and when the next time I turned my laptop on neither my graphics driver or my wirless driver were working. When I turned my laptop on I got an error saying:

Ubuntu is running in low graphics mode. The following error was encountered. You may need to update your configuration to solve this.
(EE) NVIDIA: Failed to load the NVIDIA Kernel module. Please check your systems Kernel log for additional error messages.
(EE) Failed to load module "nvidia" (module-specific error, 0)
(EE) No drivers available

After clicking ok to this message I get another with a series of options about how to resolve this ranging from troubleshoot to restart to run in low graphics just once. Once I open the session my wireless won't load up, but I can still connect to ethernet. I'm using a 3 year old HP pavilion laptop running Lucid Lynx. I'm not sure if this problem is related to the update, but it's the only thing that happened out of the ordinary before I ran into this problem. Unfortunately I cannot remember what was included in the update.

Fedora :: NVidia Has Died After Update?

Just as a note if I boot up into an earlier kernel. My card loads and compiz works and everything is fine.

I tempted those computer gods the other day by saying Fedora 11 was perfect and I was starting to feel at home with it like I used to in Ubuntu. Now I have incurred there wrath.

Fedora :: GNOME 3 Died After An Update?

Jun 25, 2011

I've been using Fedora 15 since its release (it was a fresh install) and have run the built-in updater three times; the third time being just earlier. In running it, about 113 updates were found, and afterwards, I rebooted. Unfortunately, GNOME 3 somehow broke as a result of that update (I didn't do anything else system-wise in the meantime), though I'm not sure what could have caused it.

After logging in, I see nothing except my desktop wallpaper. The top bar doesn't exist, and there are no workable elements... a wallpaper and nothing but. Thinking it might have been a user issue, I created a new user under Xfce and then logged into it, and I had the same thing. Default wallpaper but nothing else.

I am actually in the process of reviewing Fedora 15 (and GNOME 3) and was nearly done writing what I needed to before this happened, so I'd love to figure out a way to fix it rather than reinstall the entire OS since I have things set up to my liking and would hate to have everything undone.

If it helps, I did a yum groupremove of "GNOME Desktop Environment" and then a groupinstall of it again, but that didn't help it either. It did ironically remove both KDE and Xfce I had installed, however.
