I've had a minor, yet potentially embarrassing bug in Firefox 3.0.x for many months in Ubuntu 9.04, and just recently also experienced it with a fresh install of 9.10 with Firefox 3.5.x. Basically what happens is that occasionally a favicon will incorrectly be associated with a bookmark until I visit the bookmarked web site again. And these will be favicons from websites that I do not have bookmarked. Normally I wouldn't care. But if I was surfing porn, sometimes the porn site favicon would show up on one of bookmarks. Which could cause a bit of embarrassment. LOL
It turns out through a bit of sheer luck, I discovered that the problem seemed to be a bug in the "Tab Mix Plus" Firefox add-on. Since I only wanted that add-on for it's last tab selected feature, I un-installed it and installed a much more light weight and simple add-on called "LastTab" to recreate that functionality. And I have yet to have this problem since then. I suppose it's possible that it could be an interaction problem between add-ons. So just for completeness of information, here's a list of all my add-ons prior to un-installing Tab Mix Plus and installing LastTab.

I have a machine with Ubuntu 11.04 on it. I have not installed any developmental build of Firefox 5 (unless that came with Ubuntu for some unfathomable reason). For some reason Firefox 4 seems intent on identifying itself as Firefox 5.0. How do I fix this? My extensions won't install claiming they can't run on 5.0.

On a new machine running Ubuntu 10.04.2, the freshclam program (in clamav-freshclam version 0.96.5+dfsg-1ubuntu1.10.04.2) won't do updates to the database. It fails on DNS queries. DNS works OK for other programs. The tcpdump command shows that it sends the queries to 127.0.0.1 instead of the correct DNS servers specified by /etc/resolv.conf. Of course it doesn't get an answer because it is asking the wrong IP address.
There is also a --no-dns option, but that didn't help/
Do I need to tell ot what the DNS servers are, somewhere?
Why would it query only 127.0.0.1 for DNS?

I wrote/cobbled-together this nifty sendmail script to read some logs and take some disk stats. basically i'm reporting on rsnapshot. When I run it as
Code:
sudo /etc/rsnapshot/mailSta.sh
Everything works wonderful and the emails arrive as expected and fires off an email to two accounts at a remote server

I was running 8.something on my ubuntu server. Today I decided to upgrade releases! So I started it, all via ssh cos the box is about 800 miles away and it was going just fine. However - I went away from the pc for about a hour, and my ssh session died. On reconnect it starts a new ssh session - and I dont know how to reconnect to the upgrade process and finish it off.

I am struggling to get dspam to work properly.
I have follow the instructions [URL] to the letter but when I send spam/ham to the ham@mydomain.net address I see a problem in the logs.
The problem appears to be that when dspam filters the mail it stores the digests in:
/var/spool/dspam/data/mydomain.net/<user>
But when it tries to find the digests to add them to the spam/ham database it looks in:
/var/spool/dspam/data/local/<user>
But I can not find anywhere in the config that controls this.
As I followed the instructions on the ubuntu forums I can not be the first person to see this problem.
logs:

I have some WD20EARS drives that I am trying to format into a pair of Linux software RAID1 devices. The problem is that at seemingly random steps during the process, the operating system decides the disk is a size much smaller than it actually is (2 TB, or as reported by the OS when it is acting normal, 1.82 TB). I follow this general layout of steps: first, I do fdisk -u /dev/sd[x], create a primary partition spanning the whole disk starting from sector 64 (to align the advanced format blocks properly). I set the partition type to fd (software RAID autodetect). Then, I assemble the arrays with mdadm:
Code:
mdadm --create /dev/md[z] --level=raid1 --raid-devices=2 /dev/sd[x]1 dev/sd[y]1
And then I create an ext4 filesystem:
Code:
mkfs.ext4 /dev/md[z]
For reasons I can't understand, fdisk, parted, and gparted (basically, everything) decides at any random point in that process that my disks are not 1.82 TB, but instead something like 172 GB or 500 GB. Once that happens, nothing I do to try to get my disks back seems to work. I've tried using expert mode in fdisk to manually reset the number of cylinders to the correct amount, but this hasn't worked either. Nothing short of reinstalling the system seems to work (but when I boot the installer, it seems to recognize the correct size of the disks).

I've a physical machine with FC9 running vmware server 1.0.6 with 2 virtual machines. Each virtual machine is also running FC9. Everything was running smoothly until one day, one virtual machine stop. I've checked /var/log/messages of that machine and it says:
Code:
"no space left on device"
.
I try to create a file
Code:
touch dd
and the answer is the same.
The odd thing about all this is that the machine (both virtual and physical) have enough space left. This is the space available reported by df -h. Physical machine
Code:
[root@halwifi hotspot]# df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/mapper/VolGroup00-LogVol00
228G 38G 179G 18% /
/dev/sda1 190M 19M 162M 11% /boot
tmpfs 1010M 96K 1010M 1% /dev/shm
and the Virtual Machine
Code:
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/mapper/VolGroup00-LogVol00
8.7G 3.6G 4.7G 44% /
/dev/sda1 190M 19M 162M 11% /boot
tmpfs 379M 0 379M 0% /dev/shm

Target F12 mysql - 5.1.42-2
Source FC 5 mysql - 5.0.27-1
I've put SElinux into permissive mode as it was practically denying anything that moved. Both installed from the standard repos. I used mysql-administrator to create a backup of the FC5 server (all databases/tables) and transferred it to the new system. I restored it onto that machine and double checked that my standard admin user (full privs) was present and let me log in to make changes. All good so far.
So I copied over my files from my sites, point a browser at them and I get nothing, not even errors. Now it's a long while since I set the original up and have probably forgotten something simple but despite making the error output more verbose I can't seem to track anything down other than:
[Code]....
So it suggests my tables are invalid/trashed but I can't seem to figure out why. The original server is still running happily so I'm not in any rush to fix this, I'll keep plodding, Phpinfo reveals a normal operational php setup, so i think that side of the sites is functional. Apache test pages work on blank virtual hosts but viewing my sites reveals the favicon working fine but otherwise comepletely blank pages (zero output, even source). I tried running the page as a raw CLI input to the php package using php index.php and php returned nothing, logged nothing unusual but sat with my CPU at 100%, unsure if that is related.

I just upgrade to F14 from F10 on a dual montor setup. Firefox behaives differently on F14 than on F10.
On F10 it followed the mouse pointer's location and show up on the correct monitor
When maximized at close, it is always displayed on the left monitor. When not maximized at close it will open on the monitor where the mouse pointer is located.
About minimize/maximize Firefoxe before closing and it seems to work in some case, but not for me.

I have a ubuntu server 9.10 installed with exim4 as MTA. I configured a mail address on it (let's say me@example.com). Before i had it working i had a other email configured (let's say me_2@example.com). At the time i had this one it didn't work i removed exim4.
Now i can successfully send mails with it by the configured me@example.com. I also configured the password for this, but when i receive the mail the old configured mail is presented as "from" (so from: me_2@example.com).
Anyone knows how this can be changed so it says the mail is from me@example.com? The mail is not an alias, and in a mail client they work separately.

usb devices inserted after bootup aren't being automounted and opened. For the life of me, after much googling, I can't get them to work. the ehci_hcd, uhci_hcd and ohci_hcd modules are not loaded, but those were from some old posts, and I don't know how relevant they are to me.But if I insert the usb before startup, ubuntu now recognises and automounts any usb device.before the recent kernel update ( **.2 my wifi dongle would be recognised. but after,it seems as it too isn't being recognised.for the meantime, I am keeping a small unused usb device plugged in the back of the tower.

Ubuntu version: Karmic Koala (ubuntu 9.10)I've been fiddling arround quite some time with this card. So far i established the following:
1. Card is supported by drivers already available in kernel (v4l, v4l(2)).
2. Card is recognised by Skype as well as by gstreamer. However gstreamer gives me mostly greeen screen when i test it. no propper picture. both found it on video1 (video0 is webcam).
3. I know it is supposed to work well in Linux URL...instructions are for fedora here.
4. there are quite a few tutorial for this card online (even ubuntu), however they are for older version and most of them consist of getting new drivers installed (which are already included with Karmic).
TV Time - blank screen - it is trying to get video from video0 device, which is webcam. i can not set it to use video1 instead as when i click in the menu to change input nothing happens.VLC player - i select use device and set it to V4l or PVR. in both cases the programme itself switches to video0 and turns on my webcam. Nothing else happens. I also installed iv-tv including all necessary libraries and dependancies - as suggested as solution to similar model of card. Didn't change anyhting. it's basically the only thing that is not working yet (most other things i already solved-sort of). I am also interested why the programmes keep switching automaticly to video0 for input when i clearly state to them to use video1?!If this can not be solved can anyone suggest another cheap TV tunner that "just works" in Ubuntu (including remote control)?! I have a big monitor and i think i could use it as TV instead of getting a new TV....

After having some issues with GRUB2 not showing my operating system list, I accidently screwed up my Windows 7 partition by selecting the 'Bootable' checkbox in thePalimpsest(?) Disk Utility. After finding this thread (and the links provided in responses), the problem appears to be the same but, unlike the user in that thread, I was unable the uncheck the Bootable flag after checking it - the partition became totally unrecognised, and the Disk Usage Analyser shows only ~5gb of HDD space in use.
I have no other Windows installation on my hard drive, apart from the Recovery Partition which existed when the PC was bought. The thread I linked to suggested that the bootmgr file may be on the partition of another bootable Windows partition (although I'm not able to get to the PC in question right now, so I'm not 100% sure if the Recovery Partition was flagged as bootable or not)What I need to know is:(1) Is it possible to solve this problem without having to re-install Windows? I don't really have many tools (or much knowledge about all these things) at my disposal, and have no idea how to access the Recovery Partition files in order to see if the required Boot folder and bootmgr file are there. Also, in the file explorer, my Windows 7 partition is no longer visible.
(2) If this is possible, do I require internet access on the PC itself? Ever since I installed Ubuntu, it has been unable to detect proprietary drivers for my network card (whereas the demo from the USB stick I installed Ubuntu with was capable of detecting proprietary drivers)

I have just updated ubuntu from koala to lynx via reloading the synaptic repositories, and after having restarting, to boot into lynx, found that my laptop's keyboard doesnt work, none of the keys are reponding at all, which is odd as I have never had this problem with my laptop before.. I thought this might have been a (semi) common problem with lynx, but after a few searches, have not found anything similar to this problem..Does anybody have any idea what might be the problem here, I can still use the laptop to do things via the mouse and even access the internet and grab text and paste it for things, but obviously would like my keyboard back (i didnt write this on my laptop!) I am 99.9% sure it is not a hardware problem

I installed Ubuntu a few weeks ago on a spare laptop (on a Serial ATA Samsung 500500JI). It was my first experiment outside the Windows and Apple OSs and all went well. However, I need the hard-drive (and more specifically the files on it) on a new Windows-run laptop. I have attached the hard-drive via a caddy to both a Windows and an Apple laptop. Both recognise it as a healthy drive, but neither will allow me to browse the files on it.
I'm a little out of my depth, but I get the sense that it may have something to do with either the file system, or the assigning of a drive letter. I can't currently change the drive letter in Windows 7 using its onboard drive management control panel. All such options are greyed out. I've now put the HDD back in the Ubuntu laptop and am looking at the disk utility, but honestly don't know what I'm looking to do.

I'm trying to install Lucid on a Macbook 4,1. I've got both a DVD and a USB (created using Ubuntu instructions and USB Startup Disk Creator) with ubuntu-10.04-desktop-i386.iso on them. (Is this the wrong version to use, maybe?)
There are three different ways I've come across to boot from a USB or DVD, and none of them work:
1) System Preferences > Startup Disk: when I do this, only the Mac's harddrive and 'Network Startup' are available as options for booting. Even when the USB and/or DVD are inserted and are showing up on the desktop, they aren't available as options in Startup Disk.
2) Hold down 'C' when the computer is booting up to boot from a disk: this doesn't seem to do anything.
3) Hold down 'alt/option' when the computer is booting up to get a list of boot options: a list appears, but the computer's hard drive is the only option. Neither the DVD nor the USB show up.
