Ubuntu Servers :: Auditing File Access - Best Tool To Load

Jun 6, 2011

Running Ubuntu Server 10.4

I'm in need of some auditing to determine what is happening with some files on our local server. What is generally the best tool to load, and do you have any good links to a tutorial on how to install, setup and run?

I'm looking for what users have accessed a file. ... read, open, edit, delete, move, save... etc..

Ubuntu Servers :: Could Not Access PID File For Nmbd

Jan 16, 2010

I have an Ubuntu 9.10 server and I recently noticed that when it starts up I see the following displayed

* Starting init crypto disks..
* Could not access PID file for nmbd

I don't know where the message "Could not access PID file for nmbd" it doesn't appear to be coming from samba because samba is starting later in the startup. I've had no issues with samba and I can restart samba with no issues. Is this something to be concerned about? I noticed it started after I upgraded my samba server.

Ubuntu Servers :: Access Stuff (File) Over The Private Internet

Aug 8, 2011

I'm a absolute "server- noob" but I've got some experienced with desktop linux and want to build my own file server to access my stuff over the internet. I'm using dropbox for a while now like a cloud drive by simply mounting the "private" folder (which I encrypted with encfs/BoxCrypt) in order to cross-platform use important files. The problem is that Dropbox only provides 2 GB for free and I don't know how secure my data is up there. Moreover I don't wanna always sync all files locally.

I got an intel atom machine standing around and so I want to build my own file server to provide the same or at least a similar service.

1. Which type of server application provides a "network drive" that computers (several users) from the internet can access?

2. What's the best way to encrypt my data and transmission in order to make the system absolutely unattackable/unreadable from outside?

3. Is there a service that can provide a dropbox-style sync mechanism?

4. Which distro should I use? I'd prefer a non-desktop enviroment solution but never had anything to do with it. Is that possible for an average linux user?

I'm aware that this solution won't be very fast because of the limited upload of a standard internet connection but that would be ok! It's more that I want to have the possibiltiy to access all my data as a thin-client anywhere, anytime on any machine and still be on the safe side. I know that this is some kind of contradiction but what would be the best compromise? I know some questions may sound stupid but I really never had anything to do with servers at all in the past...

Fedora Servers :: Can't Access Or Modify File Unless Directory Mode Is 777 And Files Are 666

Nov 8, 2010

I have a multi user system for my roommates and myself that has separate folders for each of us. I've got user authentication working with samba, but unless I set every file and folder readable/writeable by all users, I can't browse it or edit the files. This isn't ideal as the shares are open to other users access, so I'm hoping there's a way to keep folders at 750 and files at 660 while allowing samba users to browse, delete and edit. Also, the samba share is actually a mounted NFS share from another server. Both the NFS server and the Samba server have the same users/uid's. When a file is created from a Windows host via the Samba client, the NFS server's permissions do show that the correct user owns the files, but since the files aren't mode 666 but 640 I can't edit or delete the file.

Software :: Finding A Tool That Can Directly Convert Mp3 File To A Swf File?

Jan 26, 2009

I'm looking for a tool that can directly convert mp3 file to a swf file. Tried ffmprg - 'ffmpeg -i master.mp3 -ar 22050 -ab 32 -f swf -y -vn new.swf', output is as follows:

Output #0, swf, to 'new.swf':
Stream #0.0: Audio: 0x0000, 22050 Hz, stereo, 0 kb/s
Stream mapping:
Stream #0.0 -> #0.0
Unsupported codec for output stream #0.0

I found a way to perform this task using ffmpeg to convert the mp3 file to a wav file, and converting the wav into a swf file using swftools (wav2swf), although this is not a good option because the output swf file size is very big - for a 12mb input 320kbps stereo mp3 file, the swf file is 25mb. Also downloaded a free direct mp3 to swf conversion software, which had an output swf file - with the same 12mb mp3 file - of ~400kb.

The requirements I have from the tool are:

1. Can be ran from the shell.

2. Direct conversion, or an indirect one that will produce a small output swf file.

3. Suport for multiple file conversion is a plus.

I dont know who is the person did this.Basically a event log will also be enough like which file has been copied by whom to which place.

General :: Distribution With Auditing Of Packages?

Jan 4, 2010

I have been out of the UNIX world for some time preoccupied with real life problems. I'm interested in getting a home system up and running, but having difficulties deciding on a base platform.I am leaning towards a Linux, versus a BSD due to the tremendous amount of employers seeking people with that technology. However, I am attracted to the auditing performed on packages on the BSD end, particularly NetBSD/OpenBSD.Is there a Linux distribution that performs auditing of third party packages? I understand there are some commercial distributions, but wonder if they are more reactive than proactive

Security :: Assessing And Auditing A Server?

Dec 28, 2010

In 2 weeks, I will be handed over 8 servers, each one hosts around ~3 virtual machines, which will make them a total of around ~24 servers. And part of my initial responsibility is to make sure that these servers are secured and ready for me to look after. My question is, what are the best procedures (or as I will call it "checklist") to assess and audit each server, and be 100% sure that the server doesn't have a rootkit and everything is secured.

OpenSUSE Install :: Can't Access Encrypted Partition With The YaST Practitioner Tool

Feb 13, 2010

I encrypted my home partition with the YaST Partitioner tool, but now I can't access it anymore. After I encrypted it I rebooted the machine and thought that it would prompt me a password field to access the partition, but now I can't access it at all. I tried "mount -t ext4 /dev/sda7 /home" which gives me that error after I entered the password: "mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda7, missing codepage or helper program, or other error In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so"

The info I get from "dmesg | tail" is: "EXT4-fs (sda7): VFS: Can't find ext4 filesystem" Before I encrypted it I converted the /home partition from ext3 to ext4 without any problems and it worked properly. After playing around with it I also discovered that /dev/sda7 got wiped out of /etc/fstab, but I entered it again.

Ubuntu Servers :: Access The Data In .fbd Data File

Feb 19, 2011

We purchased a new database system at work last October, ditching the old system because of a lack of support from the vendor. This is a retail Point of Sale and Backoffice database system. I am not sure what system the new one runs on, but the system we replaced was a Firebird data base. The reason I am posting is because we are now in need of the information contained in the old database which was not completely imported into the new system.

Basically the problem is this: The database in on a Windows XP system and I found a copy of SQL Manager Lite 2008 on the system, which after quite a bit of studying, I figured out how to extract the database into a removable file. I have this file (178MB) on a USB stick in a file called Backoffice.fbd.

My studying suggests to me that I can get into this database with MySQL. I have never used this and have no clue how to do this. All I want to be able to do get into the database and create tab deliminated spreadsheet files for each of the database sections (Customers, Repairs, Sales History, stock files, etc.) Is it possible to do this with Ubuntu and MySQL and if so, can expert suggest one or two things to get me started. While a guided tutorial would be nice because I am not an expert, I am willing to learn on my own if someone could point me in the right direction.
