Jun 6, 2011

I'm in need of some auditing to determine what is happening with some files on our local server. What is generally the best tool to load, and do you have any good links to a tutorial on how to install, setup and run?

I'm looking for what users have accessed a file. ... read, open, edit, delete, move, save... etc..

Security :: Assessing And Auditing A Server?

Dec 28, 2010

In 2 weeks, I will be handed over 8 servers, each one hosts around ~3 virtual machines, which will make them a total of around ~24 servers. And part of my initial responsibility is to make sure that these servers are secured and ready for me to look after. My question is, what are the best procedures (or as I will call it "checklist") to assess and audit each server, and be 100% sure that the server doesn't have a rootkit and everything is secured.

General :: Distribution With Auditing Of Packages?

Jan 4, 2010

I have been out of the UNIX world for some time preoccupied with real life problems. I'm interested in getting a home system up and running, but having difficulties deciding on a base platform.I am leaning towards a Linux, versus a BSD due to the tremendous amount of employers seeking people with that technology. However, I am attracted to the auditing performed on packages on the BSD end, particularly NetBSD/OpenBSD.Is there a Linux distribution that performs auditing of third party packages? I understand there are some commercial distributions, but wonder if they are more reactive than proactive

Security :: Tool Use To Dectect Sniffers ?

May 31, 2009

I'm looking for a nice tool to detect sniffers.

I've found several tools but many of theses projects seem to be down :

- sentinel (offical website seem to be down, no place to download the software)

- netped (not powerful enough)

- sniffdet (the project seem to be down)

- antisniff (works only for detecting windows sniffers ...)

Wherever I look for I get dead links and outdated softwares .... Do you know a serious tool I could use to dectect sniffers?

Security :: Reflective DDos ( DrDoS ) Test Tool?

Mar 2, 2011

Well someone has been putting up this attack on my game-server ports. For those of you who don't know what type of attack this is, so its an attack which is actually masked to us because the attacker uses his machine to send packets to a machine called source which reflects the packets to destination. Based on this, the UDP port under Flood at the destination starts making outgoing connections to that IP and gets rejected which uses up more than 5mb/second bandwidth instantly.

I've worked out on some security for this and now need a tool to test this against my machine. I've used PentBox but that's not really powerful to do anything. As I search Google, I find something called Trinoo but can't download or test it.

Red Hat :: Auditing On Folder And Files In 5.0?

Aug 14, 2010

I have a rhel5 as my file server with active directory intergeration and using samba for folder sharing ,webmin to manage the shares. We haveany folders and subfolders and files. We are facing the following issue. We had given a folder called yardworklist which is shared by 8 people with full access. The yardworklist will have more than 80 folders which represents each ship. The problem we are facing is some user copy a folder or file from a specific ship folder say SEA HERON to another ship's folder say BOW CLIPPER.The next day the person who wants to work on SEA HERON found the file or folder was missing and use his search tool to get the folder or file. I dont know who is the person did this.Basically a event log will also be enough like which file has been copied by whom to which place.

General :: Ubuntu: Tool For Displaying Disk Activity In General And By Process?

Oct 12, 2010

My Ubuntu system is occasionally becoming very sluggish. I'm running many things simultaneously and it's very difficult to tell which program is the culprit.

I suspect that the sluggishness is due to disk activity since the CPU usage is consistently under 50% on each of the 4 cores of the CPU, and over 30% of the 6GB of RAM are free.

Is there a tool that can show me in real time the number of disk IO operations per second and the amount of data read/written per second? Can all this info be broken down and displayed per process?

General :: Need Tool For HDD Health Monitoring

Feb 12, 2011

I wonder if there is any tool that can read health of my HDD's? There are tons in windows but what options are there in Linux? I would really hope there is a tool a can install without using terminal cause I dont have web access for the Xubuntu right now. If anyone aware of such a tool, preferable a .deb file so I can easily install without hazzle. Also I hope tools like that are not littered with tons of dependencies. Cause those dependencies are a major challenge without online connection. If there exist any smart terminal commands that will let med check health status pls let me know and pls write down the command. I have enabled the s.m.a.r.t in BIOS.
I have 4 drives running Raid 0 if that matters.
