Ubuntu Servers :: Folder And File Creation - Can't Successfully Share Editable Files Between Users
Feb 18, 2010I'm trying to setup a Samba share for our work. I have it almost complete, however I can't successfully share editable files between users. The issue I'm having is that say User1 create a file test.txt, because of the 755 permissions, then User2, who has "writable" rights as per the smb.conf file, cannot edit that test.txt file.
Whevener I create a file with a user, its locked by that user. Is there a way I can set it that every folder/file a user creates is 777 ? I firgured that there's still security because of the "Valid users = " field in the smb.conf file.

Nov 8, 2010I have a multi user system for my roommates and myself that has separate folders for each of us. I've got user authentication working with samba, but unless I set every file and folder readable/writeable by all users, I can't browse it or edit the files.This isn't ideal as the shares are open to other users access, so I'm hoping there's a way to keep folders at 750 and files at 660 while allowing samba users to browse, delete and edit.Also, the samba share is actually a mounted NFS share from another server. Both the NFS server and the Samba server have the same users/uid's. When a file is created from a Windows host via the Samba client, the NFS server's permissions do show that the correct user owns the files, but since the files aren't mode 666 but 640 I can't edit or delete the file.

Jun 13, 2010Every time I try to mount a folder from my server, it ignores whatever folder I specify and just mounts the first folder in the exports file.I used to be able to mount more than one nfs folder, so I don't understand what is going on. Google isn't helpful.

Config:
1) I created 2 shares in Samba, one is "/home/aaa" and the other is "/home/bbb". Both have the same owner, say "jack", with permission 775
2) I created one link named "pubshare" in "aaa" pointing to "bbb". "ln -s /home/bbb pubshare"
Problem: I connected to aaa from a Winxp client with account "jack" and access pubshare, (say cd pubshare), it prompts "access denied"
Experiment I've done
1) login local machine with account jack, cd /home/aaa, then cd pubshare. It works fine. (So I believe link works fine and permission of bbb is correct)
2) connect directly to /home/bbb with account jack from the Winxp client. It works fine too. (So I believe the samba config is correct)
3) I did not face this problem until I used "apt-get ugrade" several days ago.

I have set up Samba and allowed guest access to my /media/Share/data using Windows 7. Everything works great, I can create folders, add files, etc. However I noticed that when I add files or folders via my mapped drive in Windows 7, it defaults to permissions that do not allow Deluge to access them. I realized that if I go back to the server and give it

sudo chmod 0777 /media/Share/data/(folder or file)
Deluge can now access the files. I don't want to have to modify permissions every time I add a new torrent to Deluge's watch folder which is /media/Share/data/Torrents.
How do I configure Samba (or linux, or windows) to give rwx permissions when I add a file or torrent via windows? And vice versa, if deluge downloads a file and moves it to completed downloads (which I haven't been able to get this far yet) will I be able to access it via Windows 7?

Mar 13, 2011Running samba-3.5.6-71.fc14.x86_64. Why cant I access samba share by short-hostname from win7. When I ping short-hostname, the answer is the actual ip and short-hostname.mydomain.com
sa pinging short-hostname does work, but accessing it from start-run does not! Accessing by ip or short-hostname.mydomain.com works fine. ssh by short-hostname from win7 works fine too.

Sep 13, 2010I'm having a some pretty weird problems with some mounted file share in Ubuntu Server 10.04 LTS. Currently we are mounting several file share stored on a SLES Files Server onto our Ubuntu Web Servers using the CIFs protocol. Occasionally ( no rhyme or reason ) we will find that when you do a directory listing on the mounted share, while you are on the Ubuntu Server, there are no files being listed. Yet if you browse the SLES File Server or any other of the identical Ubuntu Servers (with the same mounts), the files are there ready to go.
Before using SLES for our file server we tried windows, and experience many of the problem you that you see on the forums of CIFs errors on the console screen. I'm beginning to wonder if 1. we can resolve the CIFs problems in Ubuntu 10, or do we need to down grad to Ubuntu 9 or 3.) change to something other than CIFs.

Jun 8, 2010First let me preface this with saying that I have been googling, and trolling boards trying to find a solution, tutorials, any thing to help me what I am trying to do, all day (since 8 am, when I started work, till now 3:50 pm) and I have found little to improve my situation.My goal is to setup my desktop (running Fedora core 12) as a server that can be accessed from anywhere. I would like to be able to have streaming music (find a song, or an album, you want to listen to, click and play) from any location, any computer, and I would also like to store files and such that I could also share with whomever I give permission. I have found plenty of tutorials helping with Apache and SSH, so anything along those lines would be nice.

Apr 28, 2010I feel ashamed for even asking this, since it seems like there's about 3 samba questions here every day. However after an hour of searching, I keep finding strange variants that aren't what I need.
My Goal: Create a single file share on an Ubuntu Server - share it via samba to Windows clients that are on a domain with active directory. It sure would be nice if AD authentication would work - so users don't have to type in a linux user/passsword each time they want to access the share.
In my adventures, I've found the following items (which may overlap)
1. Joining the server to a Windows Domain
2. Turning the server into a Windows Domain Controller
3. Authentication with LDAP (still not quite sure how/what this would do)
4. Stuff with Kerberos
5. Lots of people bickering about Samba 3/4 & how it's impossible to make Samba a PDC.
I'm not sure if I need to make the ubuntu server a domain controller or not...all I want to do is create a file share and share it on the domain...I don't need to make the ubuntu server a domain controller for that, right? Maybe just a member? Maybe nothing at all?
I guess if I want to authenticate stuff correctly (or forward authentication requests? Not sure), I probably need to join the ubuntu server to the domain...I think.
But let's say I do join it to the domain...then how to I create a file share that is authenticated via active directory rather than a local ubuntu server account? I see a dozen guides on joining the server to the domain, but nobody ever mentions sharing the folder over the domain.
The lines are also blurred between joining Ubuntu to the domain and making it a domain controller. What should I keep an eye out to avoid in these tutorials?
I get lost between the Kerberos/LDAP/Samba/WinBind etc...and I have a feeling I don't need all of these for something this simple.

I am sharing a NTFS formated hard drive where the mount point is in my home directory, as well as a printer connected via USB. I am to the point where printing works (using it as an ipp print share, samba is configured for it, but I don't know if it works or not), and I can access the shared folder from Windows, but I can't access the shared folder from any Ubuntu machine. If I go to system - preferences - personal file sharing, I cannot select "share files over the network." The panel is greyed out and the message "This feature cannot be enabled because the required packages are not installed on your computer" is shown
It ever so usefully doesn't tell me what those packages are though! - It'd be nice to have more useful error messages or the ability to click to install them...
Anyway, what do I have to do to get this going again?! I've installed everything to do with samba, webdav that I can find but still no cigar...

Jul 24, 2011I'm new to Linux and have taken over at a company where the linux admin walked out. he has several older linux based servers running version 8.1 i tried running the command sudo apt-get install swat xinetd to setup swat but i get an error that it can't find the package. in addition, this directory xinetd is no where to be found under the etc directory. i've verified that samba is in fact installed on these servers but for some reason the xinetd and inetd directories are not on these servers.
Could it be possible that this older version of linux does not support Swat? i'm considering upgrading very soon to the latest but my main problem right now is i need to copy all web server html files that he had on the web Server i know there are different ways to copy files from linux systems but need the best way to copy all the files so none of the website links get broke off this linux server over to my windows server.
Since i don't have access to anything of the directories nor files on the web server, what is the best way to copy these files and folders off this server?

Mar 23, 2010I have a server setup with all my web development stuff in /var/www and in several sub-folders within that. (each project having it's own folder)It works great with one FTP account. But recently I've been getting help on a projects from a buddy of mine that freelances, and have made him an FTP user account as well. All is fine, except for when he tries to edit a file and gets a permissions error.
Here's the issue, I don't want us to have the same FTP login, but all the files are currently owned by my user name. So, when he logs in to edit a file, he can't because I'm the owner, and the files are set to 744. Will I cause any harm by adding both users to the same group (www-data) and chmod'ing the files to 775 so that we can both access and modify the files?

Sep 26, 20101- I've set up 3 virtual users,one of them is a system one (with a different password) and writes on his own home folder. With this one I haven't found any problems yet, but with the other 2 users I can't access files/folders created by them. It's a permissions problem for sure, but I'm not sure how to correct it.With these users I can upload files, create files and create folders. The problem is I can't access what I create (I can't enter a folder I created but it is there and I can upload files into it).
2- Whenever I turn on ssl_enable=YES I can't access the server (even from the server itself when I connect to localhost, It's a regular Ubuntu installation).Here's the config file for the users:

Feb 22, 2011i have 3 comps(running suse 11.3) and a laptop(running vista sp2). i have installed samba on all suse comps. i have a printer attached to one of the comps and it has been shared also the internet connection on that comp has been shared. all the computers are connected using lan cables through an ethernet switch. i also have a wireless router which is connected to the ethernet switch.
I am able to view all the comps on the network except the laptop running vista. all the desktops are visible on the network and are able to print and share files on the network and also connect to the internet. the laptop running vista can connect to the internet but its not visible on the network and nor can it share files across the network or access the printer.

EDIT: I changed the permissions of the "folder" folder itself, I can access everything in that directory now but not any other folders in it. Do I really need to go through every folder every time and change the permissions?

Apr 11, 2010I've managed to setup Ubuntu Server 9.10, and created folders/files toview/edit/execute with Windows and Mac.
Now here is my dilemma, this is for a home server, and I will have 4 users(1 for myself, one with "admin" rights, my fiance(mac user), media pc, and a "guest" account for the computer or 2 that are out in the public(they don't need access to my taxes ).
I'd like to have it so that on my laptop, I can access the whole server, but some files/folders would even need me to put in a password. I want to do this because my fiance gets delete happy and deletes things, so if she goes on my computer she won't delete important info. I'd like her to have access to music, photos, and videos, as well as her having her own folder that she can treat as her hard drive.
The question is, do I need to setup a domain for this, or can I get away with a workgroup?

Jan 16, 2010I have an Ubuntu 9.10 server and I recently noticed that when it starts up I see the following displayed
* Starting init crypto disks..
* Could not access PID file for nmbd
I don't know where the message "Could not access PID file for nmbd" it doesn't appear to be coming from samba because samba is starting later in the startup. I've had no issues with samba and I can restart samba with no issues. Is this something to be concerned about? I noticed it started after I upgraded my samba server.

Dec 19, 2010I've been building my digital music collection for some time and used to house it on a local drive with no quality issues. A while back I built myself a file server using ubuntu and mdadm in a raid1 configuration to protect against potential drive failure. I link my iTunes library to the music files via a samba share and everything works great on the surface. I've started to notice that random songs are becoming corrupted with pops clicks and silent pauses. I'll even re-download an album and notice that it's corrupted a few weeks later. Now I'm at a loss to what is causing this issue; I ignored it at first but it seems to be getting worse and more widespread as time goes on.
Do you think this could be caused by mdadm? It reports that all is fine via 'cat /process/mdstat' but I wouldn't know where to look or what to look for if there were syncing issues. The other possibility is that I have iTunes set to keep my music folder organized for me, but I've never heard of it actually corrupting the files it shuffles around. The bottom line is that my library is getting crappier as time goes on and I cannot stand for that!
