Ubuntu :: Separate TrueType And OpenType Fonts?
Apr 29, 2010
I have a large Font folder that contains around 2000 fonts. It contains both TrueType and OpenType Fonts. So, I want to separate TrueType and Opentype fonts.
Is there any automated way (something like script or something faster to do) to separate the TrueType and OpenType fonts ?
I just check out the 'file' command it just says "TrueType font data" for both TrueType and OpenType Fonts.

I can't manage to find the fonts directory in Ubuntu. The fonts directory is much more conspicuous in Windows OS. Since I am a web designer, I love to experiment with a spectrum of fonts ornately expressed. I have migrated from Windows to Ubuntu because I am very impressed by its organization and functionality (sadly I couldn't download Ubuntu 11 due to internet connection errors. Moreover ShipIt had terminated).

I just finished installing a bunch of truetype fonts. After installing them, firefox is displaying "bradybunch" font when I search google.
The font settings are all serif and sans serif in both the system fonts settings and firefox settings.
I am using ubuntu 9.10.
Any idea why this could be happening?

wanted to test it with some Microsoft fonts (f.e. Trebuchet MS), so I installed the Microsoft True Type Core Fonts, using the Ubuntu Software Center, but they don't work (tested with Firefox and Chromium).I made a very simple test HTML, and set my default font to a monospaced font, to see if it falls back, and it does for all fonts except Helvetica and Arial.

My goal here is to install the truetype fonts so I can use them in openoffice. I'm using Fedora 13 w/ Gnome. Just installed it yesterday, I followed the instructions found here: [URL] but I get this error: "error: Failed dependencies: /usr/sbin/chkfontpath is needed by msttcorefonts-2.0-1.noarch" I found chkfontpath at rpm.pbone.net and put it in my rpms folder but now I get "xfs is needed by chkfontpath-1.10.1-2.fc13.i686"

I have a folder with over 1500 fonts, I would like to move them to my /usr/share/fonts folder so that they can be used. Some are from Windows, some are just random extras. I've installed the msttcorefonts, but there are quite a few missing that make some wen pages look different.
How can I go about putting the fonts from my folder, into the appropriate /usr/share/fonts folder to be used? And how can I move them all? I can't drag and drop them, and mv FONT_NAME /usr/share/fonts for all of them will take a month or two. Is there a way to elevate my self to be able to just drag and drop them all? And which folder would they need to go into for them to be used in Chrome and Firefox?

I have just installed openSUSE 11.2 X86_64 on my laptop, I then used KDE to install lots of type 1 fonts for my printer. These get loaded to /usr/local/share/fonts/...These installed fonts are visible to KDE (KWRITE) and GIMP so I assume that the installation was O.K. When I start openOFFICE writer I do not see these fonts. The font selection appears to be the fonts located under /usr/share/fonts. I have not tried other ooo3 components. I assume that they are not going to see the fonts either.
I have searched google and it appears that /usr/local/share/fonts is the correct location for non-packaged fonts. Has anybody any idea what is wrong? I think I could move all the fonts to /usr/share/fonts and ooo3 would work but this seems to break the installation directory structure. I have considered symlinks but I don't like the idea of defining a font twice to Linux and creating the syslinks is more work than reinstalling the fonts if they are lost

Essentially I have found this guide, but it is for miktex, i need a guide for texlive on Debian/Ubuntu which will not pollute dpkg installed texmf.
I'm interested in converting TrueType font to be usable in (pdf)(La)TeX.
All the power google turn up just stuff f relating how to install microsoft fonts or do stuf on MikTeX.
I CANNOT USE XeLaTeX!!! I use pstricks and the font must be available in plain TeX! Otherwise my document looks inconsistent!

Running a Dell XPS/Dimension 630i. It came with "SATA 2 RAID 0 With Dual 500GB Hard Drives." I have installed a new, third non-raided drive and installed Ubuntu on it.
So now I have Windows on the original hard drive and Ubuntu Linux on the new HD. When I get to the boot menu where I can select an OS, if I select windows I get an error: "No such drive, no such disk." Also, strangely in the first place, in order to even get to the bootloader menu I have had to disable ALL ports under the RAID config. Unless I do this, I will just get to a never-ending blinking cursor.
I have tried every conceivable CMOS config and nothing else works. Tried setting port 3 (the new HD w/ Ubuntu) to first hard disk boot priority. Tried disabling all other ports and enabling the Ubuntu HD port and vice versa.
I have some pictures of boot up: first one is strange error i get after messing with CMOS to finally get ubuntu install to work.
Then the boot menu:
Then error:
Also, note that I can actually access all files from the raided Windows drive through Ubuntu.

I'm using an ATI card, however. I'm using a dual-monitor setup, such that one of the monitors is my HDTV. The problem is that flash has a bug in it (I don't care if Adobe claims it's a security feature, it's a bug) where it only opens full-screen mode on your left-most monitor, which happens to be my pc. Now I know an "easy" work-around is to switch the positions of my monitors, but I don't have room in my apartment to place them differently and switching them only virtually would confuse and frustrate me (I tried it before).
The default Ubuntu Desktop manager is very limited, and only allows me to span the display. The manager within ATI Catalyst Control center is even more limited (it doesn't even like when I use different resolution on each monitor). So I'm hoping to use separate X sessions for each display instead (I'm aware that I can't move windows between the monitors but that would not be as big of an issue to me). Can someone suggest how to setup a separate X session per monitor in ATI?

I keep my /home on a separate partition. After every clean install of Ubuntu my old panel configuration is loaded. Meaning, shortcuts on my panel and different applets I've put on my panels as well.
what file in the /home folder is keeping these settings? Simply, I'd like to delete so I can have that "fresh" install feeling on my desktop.

I want to try out KDE on Lucid, but I don't want to install KDE on top of ubuntu, because I will end up with two sets of applications and software that is gnome specific to load in the KDE environment.SOOOOO, I want to create a separate user that is only KDE and a user(my current one) that is only gnome. Different names, different environments and applications.
Also, if it is possible, I will need instructions to remove a user as well, so in the future I decide which one I like better, I can delete the other user account.

I have installed BackupPC through the Synaptic system. It installs well on Ubuntu 10.04 and looks as though it is just what I have been looking for.
But; although I am by no means a dummy user, I cannot for the life of me understand the vast majority of what is written in the documentation. I would say it requires a high degree of expertise to understand what it is saying.
My problem is simple. I need to back up to an independent HDD. One that has no OS, and is simply a data disk. In my case, it is /dev/sde.
How can I configure BackupPC to do this?

I have installed various distros/releases of linux over the past few days and have read of a few people keeping separate partitions for their /home folders. I have a few questions:
1) I assume /home is installed with the OS and would always be on the OS partition.
2) Can I repartition the drive even though I am already installed to allocate space or would I have to start from scratch, create the partitions, and reinstall the OS?
3) How much space would one need for a home folder? Majority of hdd right?

using ubuntu 9.10 quick summary: need to set my tv resolution to 1840x1036 to see the whole desktop without cropping i just got a panasonic plasma tv and am trying to use it to watch movies from my computer. I hooked it up using my graphic card's dvi out. Since the TV came with a dvi to hdmi adapter I just had to buy a hdmi cable and now its set up to run under 1080p input. So I got 1920x1080 resolution for the tv. The problem is that the resolution does not fit exactly into the tv's screen. I am missing about 30 pixels top & bottom and some on the sides too. This results in me seeing my desktop on my tv, but the top panel with the applications menu etc is just out of bounds.
Under windows xp I have the same problem, but the nvidia control panel there has an option to "Adjust desktop size and position" which kind of works. Well you can resize but you cant position the picture. Resizing makes my actual resolution 1840x1036 pixels. With that resolution my left rigth top and bottom edges are all inside the TVs screen. Now i tried to do this in ubuntu using nvidia-settings and manually editing xorg.conf, but I am having no success at all. Nvidia or the x server or something is totally ignoring any modlines I include for my second screen (tv), and always shows 1920x1080 ... I have no way to scale the picture from the tv menu so I need to scale it in ubuntu. Does anyone know how to do this ?

install a keylogger on my laptop, which I share with my bf, who I have previously discovered is accessing various "dubious" dating sites, the idiot had even linked his iTouch to his email so I had the passwords and usernames, anyhoo, after a very strong telling off, (on all profiles he had ticked "looking for a discreet relationship!" and being clearly uber busted, he maintained that he would never do it again. I need to check though, am sure you will understand my reasons for doing so. We both share a laptop, but have seperate removable drives, Im running xubuntu on mine and so is he with a FreeBSD as a server.

I have a Ubuntu Server that is correctly set up and has been working for awhile. It currently has a domain (Registered by GoDaddy) and it is used as the main. I just bought another domain (From GoDaddy) and I want it to connect to the same server but a different section to host a second site completely separate from the first.
So this is how I want it to be setup:
Domain1 = /var/www/
Domain2 = /var/www/website2
When I put Domain1 in the url like www.domain1.com it will connect to /var/www/
When I put Domain2 in the url like www.domain2.com it will connect to /var/www/website2

I have 2 sata HDD, I wish to dual boot, but in a way to have Windows on one and Ubuntu on the other.
For some reason I could not get Ubuntu (10.04) to install from the live CD or Wubi or from Windows on the same HDD.
I downloaded the advanced distro and went with that straight onto the HDD and it has been a gem (love how it just works with no drama).
I want to install windows XP again on the 2nd HDD, as there is one game that I play in windows. (I've got it to work in Wine I just don't like / can't get used to it)
My Question is: installing windows on a 2nd HDD and then being able to choose which one to boot.
I've read about installing Windows after Linux in the user guide and reinstalling grub2 - I got the impression though, the they were installed on the same HDD and thought that what I want to achieve may differ?
