Ubuntu Security :: Hacker Accessing Remote Desk?

Aug 21, 2010

I had remote desk running on a machine and I went downstairs the other day, turned it on, and someone was controlling the machine. Of course that's partially my fault since there was -zero- rd password set. However, my question is how did this person figure out my IP and get past the router to the machine? I don't have any forwarding setup. My router admin password is (has always been) strong. I guess my question now is: Is there anyway to restrict rd access to the local network?

Software :: Very Large Icons On Desk Top?

Jan 30, 2010

Has anyone had or run into a problem with Very large (2.75sq) Icons on the desktop at boot up that you pretty much can not do any thing with anything. It happened just after a update and then it restarted, which was weird cause I can't remember the last time Ubuntu had to restart after an update. Sad thing is I can't recall what the update was but I do know that It asked me for permission to restart Mozilla then the whole thing shut down for a reboot

Ubuntu :: Sync Directories Between Desk And Laptop Both Within And Outside Of Home Network

May 26, 2011

I want to sync several directories between my laptop and desktop both at home and away from home. It seems like the tool to use for this is unison (I use rysnc for backups, but union seemed, better for this sort of thing - let me know if I'm wrong).

I found several posts that appear promising, however I was little confused about the details as I don't have much networking experience up to this point.

[URL]

1) Is a reverse ssh connection the way to go? If I only wanted to do this on my home network I could just use ssh right, however in order to get around the router outside my home network the reverse ssh is necessary?

2) How do I handle changing IP address of my laptop?

SUSE :: How To Stop KDE Desk Top Switch Animation

Jul 2, 2010

It is really clear that someone spent a whole lot of time figuring out how to show the desktops in an animation when you switch from one to another. Unfortunately, that person did not think about how annoying that might be when one needs to switch back and forth between a couple of desk tops. I am forced to hold my thought for several annoying seconds while this unhelpful animation shows me the desktop path I have taken. Even worse, it also often leaves holes in my windows that remain obscured until I change window content. Sometimes, it is simply too inconvenient or even nearly impossible to refresh the content. So I have to live with this hole in the window. I searched for "switch" in my desktop settings and I've googled for "switch desktop animation", but I'm not thinking of the keyword that the inventor thought of. I don't know how to turn it off.

Brief version: How do I turn off this misfeature?

Ubuntu / Apple :: Auto-load Apple Wireless Keyboard?

Apr 22, 2010

This morning I bought an Apple wireless keyboard and I got it connected through Blueman. It works like a charm, but I have on problem;

When I log out I can log back in by typing in my password. However, when I restart the computer it seems that bluetooth is not loaded yet and I cannot enter my password. So I have to log in using my wired keyboard, and then disconnect & re-connect to my wireless keyboard using blueman before I am able to use the wireless keyboard.

Is there any way that I can already auto-load bluetooth and connect to my keyboard before I log in?

Ubuntu / Apple :: Apple Keyboard On VirtualBox Ubuntu Guest OS?

Feb 1, 2010

I had a thread about installing on a Mac and decided to go the VirtualBox route and everything is running splendidly EXCEPT for the fnmode setting in /sys/module/hid_apple.

The problem is that the directory hid_apple does not exist for me to modify the settings for the apple keyboard. I'm assuming that when installing in VB, Ubu assumed it was a PC. Anyone know of a way to get the keyboard config directories in there so I don't have to hit Fn to do Alt-F2? Also, I tried to create the directory (sudo mkdir) and it returned "Cannot create directory...no such file or directory", but not in so many words.

Ubuntu / Apple :: Installing OS Apple Powerbook G4 Ubuntu?

Mar 14, 2011

I've had a Apple Powerbook G4 for a while now, but being mostly a Windows user I've never used it. I remember when it ran it's native OSX (Which I can't for the life remember) Probably Tiger? Anyways... I tried installing Ubuntu on it about a year and a half ago, the installation was botched and I left it sitting there with no purpose in life. :O

So I've decided to dust the laptop and give it another go. I've progressed a little further with my Linux experience, having installed and tested a few distros and even switching over to Ubuntu 9.10 for about 4 months. Enough of my life story and more to the point.Has anyone installed Ubuntu, or any distro for that matter on the Apple Powerbook G4? I know there are different versions of the G4 and I'm not entirely sure what my version is, It's the 1.6Ghz version with The Nvidia card (Err I think) and extra Wireless card installed. I am not very capable with Mac - After checking Apples website I believe it's the 15inch.

I've read the FAQ thread and will begin trying to install Ubuntu tonight at home, I just wanted some suggestion and some pointers in the right direction. What distro would be most suitable for my hardware? and What is easiest to set up?

General :: Ubuntu And Windows - Separate HDs ?

Dec 21, 2010

Running a Dell XPS/Dimension 630i. It came with "SATA 2 RAID 0 With Dual 500GB Hard Drives." I have installed a new, third non-raided drive and installed Ubuntu on it.

So now I have Windows on the original hard drive and Ubuntu Linux on the new HD. When I get to the boot menu where I can select an OS, if I select windows I get an error: "No such drive, no such disk." Also, strangely in the first place, in order to even get to the bootloader menu I have had to disable ALL ports under the RAID config. Unless I do this, I will just get to a never-ending blinking cursor.

I have tried every conceivable CMOS config and nothing else works. Tried setting port 3 (the new HD w/ Ubuntu) to first hard disk boot priority. Tried disabling all other ports and enabling the Ubuntu HD port and vice versa.

I have some pictures of boot up: first one is strange error i get after messing with CMOS to finally get ubuntu install to work.

Then the boot menu:

Then error:

Also, note that I can actually access all files from the raided Windows drive through Ubuntu.

Ubuntu :: Separate X Session Per Monitor?

Feb 9, 2010

I'm using an ATI card, however. I'm using a dual-monitor setup, such that one of the monitors is my HDTV. The problem is that flash has a bug in it (I don't care if Adobe claims it's a security feature, it's a bug) where it only opens full-screen mode on your left-most monitor, which happens to be my pc. Now I know an "easy" work-around is to switch the positions of my monitors, but I don't have room in my apartment to place them differently and switching them only virtually would confuse and frustrate me (I tried it before).

The default Ubuntu Desktop manager is very limited, and only allows me to span the display. The manager within ATI Catalyst Control center is even more limited (it doesn't even like when I use different resolution on each monitor). So I'm hoping to use separate X sessions for each display instead (I'm aware that I can't move windows between the monitors but that would not be as big of an issue to me). Can someone suggest how to setup a separate X session per monitor in ATI?

Ubuntu :: BaclupPC - Backup To A Separate HDD?

Jul 6, 2010

I have installed BackupPC through the Synaptic system. It installs well on Ubuntu 10.04 and looks as though it is just what I have been looking for.

But; although I am by no means a dummy user, I cannot for the life of me understand the vast majority of what is written in the documentation. I would say it requires a high degree of expertise to understand what it is saying.

My problem is simple. I need to back up to an independent HDD. One that has no OS, and is simply a data disk. In my case, it is /dev/sde.

How can I configure BackupPC to do this?

1) I assume /home is installed with the OS and would always be on the OS partition.

2) Can I repartition the drive even though I am already installed to allocate space or would I have to start from scratch, create the partitions, and reinstall the OS?

3) How much space would one need for a home folder? Majority of hdd right?
