Ubuntu :: Setting Up Panasonic TV As Separate X Screen?

Feb 25, 2010

using ubuntu 9.10 quick summary: need to set my tv resolution to 1840x1036 to see the whole desktop without cropping i just got a panasonic plasma tv and am trying to use it to watch movies from my computer. I hooked it up using my graphic card's dvi out. Since the TV came with a dvi to hdmi adapter I just had to buy a hdmi cable and now its set up to run under 1080p input. So I got 1920x1080 resolution for the tv. The problem is that the resolution does not fit exactly into the tv's screen. I am missing about 30 pixels top & bottom and some on the sides too. This results in me seeing my desktop on my tv, but the top panel with the applications menu etc is just out of bounds.

Under windows xp I have the same problem, but the nvidia control panel there has an option to "Adjust desktop size and position" which kind of works. Well you can resize but you cant position the picture. Resizing makes my actual resolution 1840x1036 pixels. With that resolution my left rigth top and bottom edges are all inside the TVs screen. Now i tried to do this in ubuntu using nvidia-settings and manually editing xorg.conf, but I am having no success at all. Nvidia or the x server or something is totally ignoring any modlines I include for my second screen (tv), and always shows 1920x1080 ... I have no way to scale the picture from the tv menu so I need to scale it in ubuntu. Does anyone know how to do this ?

Ubuntu Installation :: Setting Up Dual Booting On Separate Drives?

Mar 4, 2011

I am using an Abit NF7-S V2 mobo to set up my dual boot system where each OS (XP & Ubuntu) will run on a totally separate HD (as opposed to both OSs being set up on one HD). Since they will be running as stand alone boot drives, how does one set it all up so that one can boot from one or the other? I dont see how I can do it from the bios. How do I do it?

Software :: Black Tv Screen When Using Separate X Screen?

May 18, 2010

When I use seperate x screen with nvidia, I only get a black screen on the tv. I can only see the mouse cursor on the tv. But can I see the rest? I use the Nvidia driver. I use the configuration "seperate x screen", and it is connected with a hdmi cable. I use Sabayon linux 5.2, and use the gnome desktop. Could it be that gnome dosn't support seperate x screen like KDE 4?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Use "Separate X Server" Setting In Nvidia-settings?

Sep 16, 2010

In nvidia-settings I see, alongwith Disabled and TwinView settings, "Separate X Server". I tried choosing the option for my LCD (connected via HDMI), but I get a blank screen, presumably since the LCD's X server has nothing to render.

How do I direct any application (say vlc) to use that X Server instead of the Monitor's X server?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Separate X Screen For Dual GPU?

Sep 1, 2011

I'm trying to get my Dual Monitor setup working. I have a 1900x1080 LCD and a 1280x1020 LCD. Cards are dual nvidia 7600GT.

I had the system set up using TwinView for a while but I opted to switch over to "Separate X Screen" so that the two displays could serve as separate desktops with different functions. Initially they were both running off of GPU0 and everything was fine. I then decided to swap the smaller monitor over to GPU1 to make better use of my available resources. I have no issue using the nVidia configuration utility and all appears well but when I respart X it comes up with a black screen and a white mouse cursor and then just lags. The mouse moves initially but after a few minutes it freezes and the whole system locks. I have to hard reboot and then it comes up with only one monitor. Inspection of the xorg.conf file shows that it has disabled the second monitor in order to start X.

Can someone look at my xorg.conf and see if there's anything obvious that would cause it to break? Is there some issue with separate cards that is fundamentally different from a dual-head card?

I currently have a problem with my nvidia settings

I reinstalled 11.04 kubuntu recently and I no longer could use my second screen.

I looked into my nvidia settings and enabled my second screen (separate x screen).

However when I do so and press apply the second screen does nothing.

This is two desktop monitors and not a laptop and a monitor.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Dual Monitor Setup - Separate X Screen Option

Feb 18, 2010

I've played around with a second monitor, but so far I haven't found a satisfying solution. I am using a laptop with a GeForce 9600M GS graphics card. I have managed to set up twinview, but my monitors don't have the same height so I'd rather have something like the "seperate x screen" option. Or how I imagine that option would be like. After some problems with the nvidia configuration tool (I couldn't change the xorg.conf, until I read this: [URL] I now have two separate screens, but the second one is all empty, with black background and X-shaped mouse cursor.

There seems to be no window manager running, I can start programs there with -display :0.1 , but they don't get any frame decoration and, which is worse, no keyboard focus. I'd be fine with a fullscreen konsole there, so I don't really need a window manager, but I do need access from the keyboard. I'd prefer a setup that would allow me to easily (without editing xorg.conf) switch between using both monitors and using only one, because I don't always use the laptop at home.

Ubuntu :: Separate X Screens - Can't Return Pointer/cursor To Primary Screen?

Sep 16, 2010

I use a laptop, and frequently plug in to a separate monitor or to a TV screen. I have it set up to to separate X screens. When using my laptop touchpad, I find that once I move to the other monitor or TV screen, I can't return back to my laptop monitor. My USB mouse, however, is able to transition from screen to screen with no problem. I am using ubuntu 10.04 but had the same problem with 8.04 before I upgraded. I have an NVIDIA graphics card, and use the nvidia-settings (which generates the xorg.conf file) to manage the screens. Here is my xorg.conf:

Ubuntu :: Installing Xubuntu 10.4 On Panasonic Toughbook CF-29

May 27, 2010

I'm trying to install Xubuntu 10.4 on a Panasonic Toughbook CF-29 (Pentium M 1.4, 768MB ram). I downloaded the i386 desktop iso and burned it to a disk to install. When I go to install it freezes though. I tried it a couple times and one time when it froze I hit ALT-F1 and I saw this error message about squashfs repeating over and over. I thought maybe it was a bad disk at first so I burned another one and tried, same issue though. Then I thought maybe the ISO was bad so I downloaded another one from a different server.

Burned another disk same issue. Ran md5sum util on the ISO it is is definitely good. Was able to try one of the disks in another computer and it was able to work as a live cd (which it would not on the toughbook). This toughbook is known to be good because I have a Ubuntu 9.10 live CD that runs on it and I tried installing XP on it and that worked. I don't think there is any problem with the computer. So, I'm stuck. It looks like I have a good disk and a good computer. Why won't the two cooperate with eachother? How to get this to work?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Panasonic RAW Format Thumbnails In Gnome?

Jul 3, 2010

I have a Panasonic G1 digital camera this outputs raw files in Panasonic's own format (suffix .rw2). UfRaw and RawTherapee can both read these so I can work on them in ubuntu (though ufraw displays a very overexposed image at first). f-spot has problems and displays a funny pinkish mess.

Can I get F-spot to display .rw2 thumbnails?

I would actually like to get Gnome to be able to display panasonic raw thumbnails as well. Is this possible?

As an aside it would be one in the eye for windoz as Panasonic have not released a codec for XP, only for Vista and 7 (and it seams to have a nasty hook in it according to dp review)

I'm trying to use a Panasonic DVCPro HD camera as a webcam to stream live video from the camera to services like ustream.tv. Currently, the only way I can find to connect the camera to my computer puts the camera into a special pc connect mode (which does not allow recording) and makes the cameras p2 cards detected as drives. Obviously, this doesn't help me do live streaming (I don't even need to record on the camera).I've seen that on Mac OS X a program called camtwist can be used to do what I want, but it would be nice to find an ubuntu/linux solution.

Ubuntu :: Setting Up Dual Screen?

this is the frist time I've installed Ubuntu as my main OS, but I'm having some trouble.I cannot get my dual screen setup to work properly. The main screen, the acer, is working just fine with his max resolution via a DVI cable. My tv is connected via a DVI to HDMI converter and it does work, but only at 640x480 resolution. The screen is very small in the center of the TV. I've tried changing the resolution in the xorg.conf file but upon restarting it just turned my TV off.

When i setup my windows, i was able to manually setup a custom resolution (i.e. 1842x1026) through the nvidia utility to be able to get the screen the fit properly.

I was wondering if there is any way i could do the same for ubuntu, perhaps through terminal.

Ubuntu :: 11.04 Vnc Screen Not Repainting / Setting Somewhere That I Am Missing?

Apr 30, 2011

I have been successfully using VNC to control a couple of Linux boxes from my Windows PC for some time ... using TightVNCViewer on Windows and the default vnc server at Linux. All machines on my local network, no internet access required.

However, I just upgraded both linux boxes to Ubuntu 11.04 (released version) and VNC is almost but not quite working...

Both installations are more-or-less straight out of the box default installs - I haven't had a chance to change much yet!

I have enabled remote control of the desktop in Linux, and if I start TightVNCViewer it does connect and I can see something. However, the desktop does not repaint when an item on the desktop goes away, which makes it pretty much unusable.

I upgraded TightVNCViewer to the latest version in case that was the issue, but no change.

Is there a setting somewhere that I am missing? Do I need to use a different Viewer package on Windows?

General :: GNU/screen Not Setting $STY

Jan 25, 2011

I'm trying to script the spawning of GNU/screen windows by using commands of the form screen <CMD>.

For some reason when I start GNU/screen (by hand), the shell that it starts in window 0 (/bin/bash) does not contain a $STY environment variable. Without this commands like screen vim start a nested screen session, not another window as I want.

My environment is somewhat unusual. Here's how I end up in it:

ssh robm@somehost
sudo su sharedaccount
script /dev/null
screen

The script /dev/null step exists because the TTY device allocated for the robm user cannot be accessed by the sharedaccount user. The script command allocates a new TTY that is owned by the user that invoked it, solving that problem.

If I skip the sudo and script steps, GNU/screen sets $STY just fine. In other words this works just fine:

ssh robm@somehost
screen

Presumably something about sudo and script interferes with screen
