Ubuntu Security :: Tcp Wrapper On A Dekstop - No Server Situation?

Mar 30, 2011

I did a NMAP on a 10.4 desktop system. Found tcp wrapper on my system with an open port. Again I do not run a server. etc/host-deny and etc/host-allow contain no active elements. I know tcp wrapper as a great tool to secure a server. Closing the port with ufw gives no result, tcp wrapper still show up.

Server :: Relational Interface/wrapper Around SQL Database?

May 19, 2011

I'm not a database guru, so be patient with me: Is there some kind of "wrapper" software you can put around an SQL database (MySQL perhaps) that allows you to internally configure database rules on a higher level than the database itself can actually implement? (E.g., "rows in table A can be deleted, but only if there are no related rows in table B and only if column x for the row in table A is in state y.")The idea would be to keep from having to trust this kind of logic to the client programs, while also avoiding the need to write a full fledged server daemon just for your application. The clients submit their SQL insert requests to the wrapper daemon, and the daemon passes them on to the database if they pass a rules table defined for that particular database.

OpenSUSE Install :: KDE Dekstop Does Not Automatic Start?

I got my problem with KDE Desktop. I'm using openSUSE 11.2 and KDE 4.4, when I make updates to my YaST repositories. I am a full file system usage in. / then I delete the file / var / tmp, because large files up to 4 GB. KDE Desktop then I could not run ranymore.

kbuildsycoca4
kquitapp plasma-desktop> / dev / null 2> & 1
kstart plasma-desktop &> / dev / null 2> & 1

KDE Desktop can run normally but does not like the first time before the crash. And my KDE Desktop not automatic start.

Ubuntu Installation :: 3rd World Situation (no Internet / Cd Rom)

Nov 13, 2010

I need to install ubuntu or edubuntu (preferably) on an older computer (256 ram) whose cd rom is shot, but the USB ports work! The family has 2 kids and the parents are very computer illiterate and know NO English. The kids' future is dependent on learning English. The grandfather is illiterate in his language! They are not down and out people, but they could use some help, if you know what I mean! I do have an external DVDRW drive and 2 computers where Ubuntu Maverick and Lucid have been installed. I will be about 300 km from them to give support. I have 2 days Monday to Wednesday next week to install Ubuntu or edubuntu.

I read on the internet 3 solutions, one of them offering a USB fix, which I am not 100% clear on: [URL] I do not know how to program and am far more comfortable around a GUI, even though I sometimes venture off using the terminal (albeit, copying and pasting codes that other provides and that often I only get half the meaning of). The USB stick option seems to be one of the best solution at this time because I have tested it in the past! The computer has suddenly crashed (I had installed Windows in a multiple user/password mode), but one of the kids (older) was using games from friends' usbs (maybe full of virii)! Maybe the crash is a hardware crash as surges are common in the area. (I will be able to check for that using some kind of software if I can boot the comp.) After installing Ubuntu succesfully on two more recent computers already, I think Ubuntu or edubuntu might be the best solution for this situation. I am also 300 KM from being able to help out these people!

I have a few questions at this time. If the option of basically using one computer's image (ubuntu Maverick) that I have installed with all the packages that come with it (solution 1) is a viable one, how am I going to deal with the difference in hardware between the two computers. DOn't they need "drivers" and packages related to these specific components? Could I use the external dvd drive? If so, how can I get the old computer to recognize it. Assuming I can make it work again, would I need to download (beforehand) the windows drivers/files needed? Install them which might help if I want to use it to install the ISO image. I am not thinking about a dual boot since space is an issue and windows is a bad option anyway (virii).

General :: Best Setup For My Situation?

May 27, 2010

I've had a fair share of experience with Unix, but am humble and didn't see a better place to put this.

Bear with me here:

I am in a situation where I will be without owning a computer for a while. I have a 16GB SDHC which uses very little space for music/photos/game-saves and I wanted to use it along with a USB card reader to boot into a Live USB distro. I've tested with Ubuntu flavors and things work great. But after doing some reading, I found that the constant read and write is hard on any flash drive (not to my surprise).

I have decided to use a LiveCD instead, and see if I can allow persistence on my USB/SDHC setup instead. I absolutely need to virtualize a Windows XP machine within the Linux distro and be able to save some stuff.

For starters, what is the best distro for me? I'll be using it mostly for programming and the shell, so a fancy desktop isn't really needed (but man does Ubuntu look nice). I'm just making sure I can install and run programs from an SDHC in the way that I want.

Ubuntu Installation :: Use Current Live CD To Allow To Boot Into Windows In Situation?

May 13, 2011

alrighty, long story short, I screwed up. I had installed a copy of ubuntu 9.1 to my sda1 partition and a copy of windows 7 to sda2 and it worked pretty well, but after needing to change the partitions around, I deleted sda1 and did a wubi install. I forgot to adjust the mbr before deleting the ubuntu install and my live CD is still running ubuntu 9.1 (think that's grub 1.5) and I can't update the live CD, as my only functioning OS is currently running off it. I suspect, therefore, that the mbr is still pointing to a now non-existant partition to find the boot files. So, in short, how do I use my current live CD to allow me to boot into windows in this situation? my current partition table is sda2: windows 7/wubi, sda1: media/backups

Ubuntu :: Failed To Execute Child Process Skype-wrapper?

Apr 6, 2011

Just figured this one out and thought I'd post it here in case it helped someone else. Skype just upgraded itself from 2.1 to 2.2. After upgrading it didn't start, and I got the message

"failed to execute child process skype-wrapper" First test out if skype runs from the command line, by running this in a terminal

Code: skype & If it runs, you're good to go: simply right click on the menu, locate your entry for skype and change the command to launch it from skype-wrapper to skype. The reason for this is that in the 2.1 version, skype needed a script called skype-wrapper to set some varibles before start up. Upgrading removes the script, but failed to update the menu entry.

Programming :: C Wrapper For Secure Password Substitution

Feb 3, 2011

I'm working on a program that will allow non-privileged users the ability to substitute passwords that are read in from a 600-root:root file.
A user might call it like this:
/bin/securepasswrapper "/path/to/check_ping -u Admin -p ?webserver1?"

The file (defined now as /tmp/securefile) will be searched for the identifier "webserver1", and it's corresponding password will be returned to securepasswrapper. Now, I know you could just call /bin/echo, and get the output, but that's in scope at this point.
File format of securefile is:
<identifierassword>
ex: webserver1:asdf123

Once the password is properly substituted in, securepasswrapper should then execute it as the UID/EUID of the calling user (not root)...that part I've not got to yet.
Code:
/* program: securepasswrapper
author: R.Briggs + Google
date: 02/02/11
purpose: C wrapper that replaces placeholders in a string with secure passwords retrieved from a file
*/ .....

Probably we could do as this way
cat wrapper
$1 $2 $3 $4 $5 $6 $7 | tee test.log
(assume it has 0 to 6 parameters)

and use it like
wrapper command.sh -s p1 -o p2 -q p3
wrapper command.sh

It is a little ugly to list all fixed parameter as above, do we have better code to handle various parameters?

Ubuntu :: Make A Disk Image Of 9.10 System - Automatic Wrapper For Windows Drivers

Feb 12, 2010

1. Make a disk image of my 9.10 system (formatted ext3, btw) on my Syology CS407 NAS so I can do a bare metal restore. Why is this a couple of clicks on my Mac and Windows boxes, but so far not easy on Jaunty? Did I miss something?

2. Drivers. Why can't I just have an automatic wrapper for Windows drivers so I can use any printer or scanner, or a simple point and click driver install for native drivers? I have my ethernet connected Brother MFC-7820N, and the Samsung CLP-315 that runs off my CS407 installed and working on my Jaunty, but it was way more work than expected. What is the easy, automatic or point and click way to install drivers?

3. Graphics drivers. I have decent cards in my big boxes, Nvidia GTX 200 series. But when I get kernel updates, I have to uninstall and reinstall the graphics driver. Is there an easy way to keep this working?

4. Is there one flavor of linux distro that has a really consistent standard for user interface? I like to be able move things around, but do like my menus to be consistent (and do I ever hate the MS ribbon!). I've really only tried Ubuntu.

Linux installs have come a long, long way from the old days, and are such a point and click operation that I just wonder what I'm doing wrong. Someone is bound to have sorted these things.

Debian Programming :: Packaging Shared Library With Python Wrapper

Apr 12, 2014

I have written a shared library and successfully used debhelper 9 to create a Debian package from source using a Makefile generated by cmake. I then went about writing a python wrapper to that library and wish to package that wrapper in with the library so I can have a single distributable rather than 2 separate ones.

All of my attempts so far have me placing my python source and a setup.py file in the same directory as the makefile at the time where I call debuild.

From here I have tried a couple different configurations to my debian/rules file as seen below:

Attempt 1:
# -*- makefile -*-
%:
dh $@ --with-python2 --buildsystem=python_distutils

This try seemed to package up the python stuff nicely but proceeded to ignore my makefile for the shared library and therefore ultimately failed.

Attempt 2:
# -*- makefile -*-
%:
dh $@ --with-python2

This try ran make, but completely ignored the python stuff. From some research I have gathered that the --buildsystem flag tells debuild to ignore any makefiles in the directory, which obviously causes a problem in my case.

Another attempt was to modify the build dependency to first run make and then call the python build process that file looked like this

Attempt 3:
# -*- makefile -*-

build:
dh $@
dh $@ --with-python2 --buildsystem=python_distutils
%:
dh $@ --with-python2 --buildsystem=python_distutils

This appears to somewhat work as both processes do build, but a few of the python files are still not getting installed.

Is this the way I should be going about doing this? I've noticed that most python wrappers tend to package themselves individually and then make that package dependent on the library it is attempting to wrap.

Ubuntu :: Printing With Exact Size Photos And With Poor Auto Colour Printing But The Situation Remains Unchanged

May 31, 2010

I expected more from ubuntu 10.4 with regards to printing with exact size photos and with poor auto colour printing but the situation remains unchanged! for instance .. the photo size configurations for ubuntu/fspot/gimp and others are not compatible with my printers (HP and Brother) .. here in Europe a typical standard size photo (10x15inches or 150x100mm are not even on the Ubuntu listing? I have tried all listed possibilities including "custom" (which does not seem to ever work correctly?)and the result at best is photos with uneven boarders or at worse my printer goes a bit crazy with much wasted photo paper and expensive ink ...even photos selected for "no boarders" still produces photos with the self same uneven boarders.

I have tried pretty much everything over time following advice in this forum and including using HPlip and updating drivers required for my Brother printer but the root problem seemingly lies with the Ubunto photo size setup listing. Working with Ubuntu over the years I have found that it can do pretty much everything that Windows can do except for this dam ongoing photo quality and configuration problem.
