I have some problem with Apache2 Server that hold my login screen to stop showing login screen, I need to enter the dekstop via
1.Alt+Ctl+F1,
2.sudo service gdm-stop
3.startx
By Mistake I deleted some library files to fix the above issue and got much worse as many of my dekstop icon seems to be removed for ever and many not responding to my clicks

I tried to open the Open the Laptop I found the I could not find my Login Screen, I can watch my mouse scrolling around and when hit power key show me restart, herbinernate .etc, I tried to log in into console by pressing ALT+CNL+F4, and when typed startx it showed me following error

If this server is no running remove /tmp/.X0-lock
and start again
Xinit: Resource temporarly unavailable (errno 11): unable to connect to X server
Xinit : No such process (Errno 3): server error
I installed kde in ubuntu recently. For a while I didn't need it because I'd been using gnome, but gnome seems to be broken (if I boot up in it, the panel just doesn't show up. I think removing gnome and reinstalling it would be the best solution, but how do I do that? I tried apt-get remove ubuntu-desktop, but it told me that it wasn't installed, so not removed. Did I just get the package name wrong, or what?

Today I had my whole gnome panel on top missing, which makes it practically impossible to work on netbook remix. Then I tried to follow instructions in this post.[URL] hile trying to run that stuff in the terminal that I went into with strg-alt-f1, I think I either created a new user (with the same name???) or something else happened, ANYWAY NOW AFTER RESTARTING ALL FILES IN MY HOME FOLDER ARE GONE, SO ARE ALL MY SETTINGS. the programs are oddly still there, even the additional ones that I installed. but for the rest all settings, passwords and files are like after a fresh ubuntu installation to clean hard disk. btw i run lucid lynx on an eeepc 1008ha.

I installed Windows XP followed by an installation of Linux Mint-XFCE as a dual boot. I decided I want to use Ubuntu w/ gnome GUI instead of Mint, but I don't want to reformat my computer. What's the best/easiest/fastest way to do this?
FYI: I don't care if I lose any data on the linux partitions. I just don't want to have to go through the XP install again - so many updates and things to configure when finished :/
After a misguided attempt to upgrade Pango/Cairo etc.I am left with a Gnome desktop with no fonts and the Pango errors below. I have managed some partial repairs with the use of symlinks pointing back from /usr/local.I'd really like to revert to the installed setup. Yast tells me I have the original installed versions. Despite that and having re-installed everything I still have the problem.I have searched high and low but although quite a few have suffered similarly I have not found any answers.Everyone tries uninstalling/reinstalling but it does not seem to help.Is there really no way to remove Gnome and associated packages and re-install them?

But when i tried to uninstall Mozilla Firefox with other Mozilla adds, it began to uninstall all default gnome apps. And my GNOME menu and desk was empty. I tried to set back apps and to install again Mozilla stuff with other GNOME apps, so some apps has restored but main menu has half apps not like default. But after restart OS startet with IceWM, not with GNOME at all... So how to restore GNOME default mode without reinstalling OpenSUSE?

Again I do not run a server. etc/host-deny and etc/host-allow contain no active elements. I know tcp wrapper as a great tool to secure a server. Closing the port with ufw gives no result, tcp wrapper still show up.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI got my problem with KDE Desktop. I'm using openSUSE 11.2 and KDE 4.4, when I make updates to my YaST repositories. I am a full file system usage in. / then I delete the file / var / tmp, because large files up to 4 GB. KDE Desktop then I could not run ranymore.
I was googling and found KDE/KDE4 - openSUSE when I try to execute this command:
kbuildsycoca4
kquitapp plasma-desktop> / dev / null 2> & 1
kstart plasma-desktop &> / dev / null 2> & 1
KDE Desktop can run normally but does not like the first time before the crash. And my KDE Desktop not automatic start.
Where an i found log from KDE DEsktop. I had searched on /var/log/messages, /var/log/kdm.
And how the best solution if I want to restore OPensuse.?
Deleted my ati drivers accidently during a botched upgrade. Have been trying to fix the problem from things I read on here, made a thread but can't get online to execute it.Found my install dvd tried running repair and in the process deleted my windows partition(anyway to get that back?) and still no previous ati drivers or gnome installed.
When I boot up i see SUSE LINUX not opensuse... no grub So my question is how do I install ati drivers from the dvd and how do I install gnome or kde from install dvd? did i royally mess up and basically now just completely reinstall opensuse 11.2 completely? and if so can I recover files from my deleted windows partition and previous opensuse partition?
I have recently been pulling my hair out with Gnome-Shell. I had Gnome3 including the shell up and running as soon as it was ready in the stable repos. However it recently refused to work after the update to 3.0.1 hit the stable repository. Today I did a complete reinstall of OpenSUSE 11.4 from the gnome desktop CD, NVIDIA drivers are correctly installed and working. Gnome3 has been installed via the one-click method on top of this FRESH install. Yet still my gnome-shell freezes after login, I am running in fallback mode now. Really cannot see what can have gone wrong this time, nothing out of the ordinary has been knowingly installed at all. I'd really love to get my desktop up and running to how it used to be.

anyway, since it was a fresh install, i thought i should just save myself the trouble and reinstall ubuntu all over again. i have ubuntu 10.04 64 bit installed and configured and working sweet. I have reinstalled windows 7 and now i can't boot ubuntu i've tried easybcd to add ubuntu to win boot loader which failed and tried to follow the instructions to reinstall grub through a live cd which i am in at the moment. i go to a terminal and type sudo grub and it brings up the grub prompt. i have mounted all discs and entered the command find /boot/grub/stage1 and it keeps spitting this back at me Error 15: File not found

View 7 Replies View RelatedInstalled 10.10 onto a brand new HD. Using the computer to introduct myself to both Ubuntu and file server concepts. I also installed Samba and was communicating wirelessly with 2 Win 7 machines. THEN I upgraded to 11.04, could not get wirless internal card (B43) to work. Everthing is a mess my 11.04 computer is a doorstop. I tried to reinstall 10.10 from the orignal distribution disk I had created. I would like to take off 11.04 and go back to 10.10 with Samba and a functioning wireless card. I have backed up files, I would just like 11.04 off and 10.10 back. I do not wish to deal with the wireless B43 driver and 11.04 for now.

I get this error message: No Boot Device Available, Press Enter to Retry.For some reason my OS loads no problem if I am just restarting my system. This just started happening out of the blue.I've already reinstalled a couple of times off the live CD and also deleted and reinstalled GRUB2 with no luck. Now I'm thinking about trying to delete and reinstall my MBR, but I don't know the safest/best way to do this. Can I do this with gparted? Is this something that can only be done in terminal? I've seen commands like install - mbr ... should I use this route?

When booting into GNOME, the desktop image flashes on the screen and the second the bars on top and bottom try to appear the system boots out of the desktop and returns to the log on screen. I've been using Ubuntu for a couple of months as a wubi install. I've been able to do everything in Ubuntu and have not had to resort to Windows at all. I do have another Windows computer that is networked to this Ubuntu machine. It must remain Windows so I do have a Windows machine for a pinch. The question is I'm thinking of reinstalling Ubuntu on this machine by itself . No more Windows at all. What will I gain & what will I loose.
