Ubuntu Security :: Dmsetup - Device-mapper - TrueCrypt - And Desktop Icon Labels
Jul 8, 2011Anyone know how device-mapper works, or can someone point me to any docco (other than the man page)?
Couple years ago I wrote a TrueCrypt wrapper script for use on Puppy Linux, and am reworking it for Ubuntu. Puppy sometimes didn't have the 'dmsetup' device-mapper utility available, but TrueCrypt still works without this when the '-m nokernelcrypto' option is used.
My script notices when dmsetup is available and skips this option. When the TC volume gets mounted (somehow using dmsetup), the Desktop icon is labled with the leaf name of the /media/mount_point -- so far, so good.
However, if I force the script to add the no-kernel-crypto option, and the TC volume is mounted without using dmsetup, the Desktop icon ls labled with the size of the volume. Say what?
Running df shows the difference between the two mounts is whether /dev/mapper is used. So *how is* dmsetup making this happen? The manpage isn't much help. Is it just the 'rename' sub-command? I am unable to find any details about this mechanism.

Dec 10, 2010what a horrendous piece of software. Ive been at it 3 days trying to do something that ought to be simple and everytime i solve one problem another problem arises. at first I removed the old clamav 9.5 or something. I got the latest ubuntu release btw, and Clamav used to work when i first installed it in the previous ubuntu release. anyway, it asked me to upgrade, so since synaptic doesnt have the latest, i downloaded from sourceforge. I did the whole ./configure gave me errors like need build-essentials-- which i then did, error: need zlib.dv--- I did that one too. Now two more errors that i need to fix so I can compile it.

Apr 29, 2011My laptop randomly shuts off, at first I thought it was an issue with the laptop overheating but during the install of 11.04 I made sure the laptop had a fan blowing on it constantly and checked it and determined it couldn't have overheated. My problem now is that I was able to use a live cd to access my old files but was presented with only two files stating that my files were encrypted, I'm don't ever recall encrypting my files and so I'm without a passphrase.
What I'm wondering, is there a way to gain access without the passphrase? Or is there a way to fix the corrupt install?

I checked the Update manager. No update. All of Mozilla links in google say Mozilla. I feel sure this is an attempt to install malware. It came up when I went to cnet and I guess I shoule include a picture of it. Does anybody have any experience with this?
I went on to read cnet and the first article was about major add servers serving up adds that automaticly install malware. I guess this was a case of that. I had addblocker disabled at the time but noscript active. Looks to me like having noscript saved me an infection. Be careful out there.

As a security minded individual, I would like to make sure to lock down my Ubuntu (11.04b3) install in one of the best ways I can think of, and require a dongle to access my box. Is this something any of you other security minded people have done?
What are other great ways to lock my terminal? I would like to make sure that not only the "average" user, but also the ABOVE average user will not be able to penetrate my system without a key. Let me know what you think, and other measures I can take.

Jul 7, 2010I'm completely new to Ubuntu and only installed yesterday for the first time. The install worked fine. After booting it asked me to install updates. I did this and now when I boot i get:

- Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
- Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough)
- Check root= (did the system wait for the right device)
- Missing modules (cat /proc/modules: ls /dev)

Dropping to a shell Now I've tried searching through the forums and I've seen people with similar problems however none of the solutions suggested to them have worked. The only thing that may work if it is explained to me how to do it is in Grub 2 it is looking for a UUID. Now I tried editing this on startup to /dev/sda5 instead and it loads. Only thing is I read that this is temporary and would have to do it each time which means it's a workaround not a solution. As I explained at the start, first time of using Ubuntu and so far haven't been particularly impressed as I have another problem with the processor being used up by loads of 'udevd
