Ubuntu Security :: Install A Antivirus - Firewall Configuration On 11.04
Jun 7, 2011
I am going to wipe off Windows from my laptop & install only Ubuntu 11.04. Do I need to install a antivirus system, I know about the firewall form ubuntu software centre i.e. firewall confiiguration.
I've recently installed Ubuntu 10 on my laptop and I'm not sure whether it's safe or not. My question is do I need any antyvirus or firewall to protect my pc against virus, spyware etc.?
I would like to install Linux based AntiVirus Server with Windows Clients. As per the existing setup, all Windows machines are using "demo" or "evaluation" copy of antivirus & all antivirus softwares are not same on all windows computers.
Someone is using Trend-Micro ,other is using Avast. Due to above listed problem,i want to implement Linux Based Free AntiVirus Server, which will be connected directly on the internet. The Linux AntiVirus server will updated it's database from Internet automatically.
Inside the Linux Server, all Windows PC's are connected in a same Local Area Connection. All windows XP computers will fetch the updated data from the Anti Virus Server. Also,i am searching MAIL RESPONDER OR POP UP Windows, when any virus found on any client machine. My company needs Cost Effective solution & Linux is the best solution for this.
Im a long time windows user and just installed Ubuntu 9.10 and have heard that i dont need any antivirus or spyware program on it, also is the firewall enabled by default if there is one and last thing do you need to do things like disk clean and defrag if so how.
if ubuntu netbook remix have a built-in firewall, and how does this firewall work when i install applications like Valknut? Do i have to change firewall, or does it make the changes automatically? If i need to manually change open ports in firewall, then i want a easy to understand gui, if there is one. I want to add port-ranges, with options [tcp],[udp],[both] or single ports with same options. Im looking at Guarddog, since i installed all deps for Guidedog. how Guarddog would behave with ubuntu's config?
I just erased WinXp and installed Ubuntu on old laptop. I intend to use it later ot connect to public Wi-Fi. Do i need to install a firewall GUI and make any special settings? I didn't encrypt home folder during installation. I probably should have done it. But i am already low on system resources (224MB ram, 1.2Ghz CPU). Would that use up any additional resources? Would it make computer run slower? Can i still encrypt the home folder after i installed the system?
I am new to ubuntu natty narhwal 11.04 i want to ask as i have used only windows OSs where one must have to run anti virus for smooth computing. I am shifted to ubuntu now please tell me is there any need to use anti virus in ubuntu or not if yes then please guide me which anti virus and how should i install it on my ubuntu.
I'm dual booting with windows 7 and Ubuntu and i was wondering where i should download AVG (i have a paid version) and what other security precautions should I take between both operation systems?
i have: 1 windows partition (~23gbs) 1 Ubuntu partition (~23gbs) 1 linux swap partiton (~10 gbs) 1 NTSF partition for storage (~170gbs)
I read some articles about viruses in Linux and about some antiviruses which work in Linux and delete Windows viruses but I still don't understand: is there any antivirus which specializes in Linux viruses? Even though there are very little of Linux viruses, I know.
I know that this is a linux forum, but I need to tap the brains of folks that have experience in this filed. My wife is the assistent IT director of a large community college in Pittsburgh, PA. They are running 4000-5000 client PC's. between the labs a nd faculty, across multiple campuses. They are rolling out Win 7 64 bit across all machines. They have 1/2 the PC's on Forefront and 1/2 on TrendMicro. They want to re-evaluate the AV solution, and are unable to find any decent review or tests for Enterprise level AV/spyware/malware solutions.
software to use against Intrusion and such. The thing is that I don't want to have several anti virus programs running at the same time due to collision.
I would like to use my Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic system to scan and clean viruses from Windows based HDD. I have KlamAV, AVG, and AVAST. I couldn't get F-prot to work. I don't find a debian package of it and don't know how to install tar.gz and the tutorials don't help a lot. Are there other antivirus solutions which are good for cleaning Windows OS but work on Linux/WINE? I wonder if I can install antivirus software in WINE and scan with no problem the hard disks.
Recently I had a Java exploit on Windows. Luckily Microsoft Security Essentials identified and removed it. Such things can happen on Linux as well, from what I've heard. Why does Linux offer no such detection?
does it effective using ClamAV as Privoxy antivirus? I have actually configure it but it does not seem to come into any effect. Why?I test it with Eicar(test virus) online and it does not even prompt there is a problem unless i have scanned.Beside that,i have installed ClamAV daemon along with it. [Code]....
Issue :How come the Clam Antivirus does not prompt there is a virus when i opened the file or problem link?Does it work difference as Window OS antivirus which prompt when there is a virus detected?
When I enable UFW Configuration, in a programme called Firewall Configuration, runs along with the System. Now, I configured it such that it can run along with the Session. Now, Ubuntu is already secure. So, is there any need for additional Firewall like this? (ufw is already present in Ubuntu, and this only Configures it). And, is it required to have it enabled always for keeping the Firefox running? (Because It may consume System Resources). Or, is there any other firewall that consumes less System resources or runs at the Background?
I have squid as a proxy on the Suse box, and with the default firewall I have to enable masquerading to allow clients on the eth3:1-3 to send and receive mail through the Suse box. I found the Suse firewall completely inadequate (all P2P software/connections are allowed once you enable masquerading) and had to install ConfigServer Security & Firewall. In die configuration of csf I could get my way around getting smtp to work for the eth3:1-3 clients, but pop3 connections does not go through the box. I know I need to allow port 110 and 995 to masquerade of NAT (or something) and then the same for port 22
i know there is no need in linux for antivirus. but i wanna to install a antivirus in ubuntu 9.10 but i dont know how give a complete step by step solution
I used Avast webfilter (proxied webtraffic through Avast) when running Windows. Sometimes Avast would alert and "protect" me from being infected by a compromised website. NOTE: Avast would alert even absent clicking any links. Just viewing the page could result in infection. Should I be running some kind of proxy webfilter for protection? My understanding is that Firefox can be compromised and this can in turn compromise Ubuntu. Are these kinds of threats specific to Windows running Firefox, or Firefox per se. If Firefox per se it seems like I need some sort of Proxy webfiltering like Avast provides.
I just installed a fresh copy of Ubuntu and after running it for a few days I am having some strange issues. First, I cannot access the Applications men. When I click on the tab it highlights but I do not get a drop down menu. Also, I am being told when I boot up that there is no hard disk space. If I go to places->computer and check hard disk properties I am told that there is 66MB of space (I have a 640MB drive and only Ubuntu is installed). I think I have a virus but I cannot install an antivirus because I "have no disk space" and can't access the terminal through applications.
I will be relocating to a permanent residence sometime in the next year or two. I've recently begun thinking about the best way to implement a home-based network. It occurred to me that the most elegant solution might be the use of VM technology to eliminate as much hardware and wiring as possible. My thinking is this: Install a multi-core system and configure it to run several VMs, one each for a firewall, a caching proxy server, a mail server, a web server. Additionally, I would like to run 2-4 VMs as remote (RDP)workstations, using diskless workstations to boot the VMs over powerline ethernet. The latest powerline technology (available later this year) will allow multiple devices on a residential circuit operating at near gigabit speed, just like legacy wired networks.
In theory, the above would allow me to consolidate everything but the disklessworkstations on a single server and eliminate all wired (and wireless) connections except the broadband connection to the Internet and the cabling to the nearest power outlets. It appears technically possible, but I'm not sure about the various virtual connections among VMs. In theory, each VM should be able to communicate with the other as if it was on the same network via the server data bus, but what about setting up firewall zones? Any internal I/O bandwidth bottlenecks? Any other potential "gotchas", caveats, issues? (Other than the obvious requirement of having enough CPU and RAM).Any thoughts or observations welcome, especially if they are from real world experience in a VM environment. BTW--in case you're wondering why I'm posting here, it's because I run Debian on all my workstations/servers (running VirtualBox as a VM for Windows XP on one workstation).
I have Ubuntu running on an old PE server. It is running Virtualbox with an instance of Ubuntu inside. The instance is there to run my honeypot.
The server box IP is192.168.1.10. The Virtualbox is bridged with it's own IP of 192.168.1.200. The honeypot daemon is listening to 192.168.1.201 with arpd.
I set up the UFW with DENY. And then enabled only the ports leading to the honeypot scripts which are abound to IP .201. I then forwarded the ports necessary to run VNC to .200.
Here is the UFW status: buntu@ubuntu-desktop:/var/lib$ sudo ufw status Status: active To Action From -- ------ ---- 192.168.1.201 21/tcp ALLOW 21/tcp 192.168.1.201 4444/tcp ALLOW 4444/tcp 192.168.1.201 5544/tcp ALLOW 5544/tcp
I installed Zorin OS 3 on a flash drive successfully and I would like to know how to install antivirus and antispyware apps on it also.It does have WINE on /in it also.
