I want to install this file for reading some windows .dat files[URL]...I looked at some code and it looks like its trying to connect to an outside server. This program is supposed to give non-Microsoft e-mail programs the ability to see attachments included in an e-mail message by a Microsoft e-mail composer.

FTPS on windows can read series of FTP command from a txt file and execute them. I don't understand the results of a simple performance test I ran using two basic scripts (running on a high end server):

I would have thought that accessing a VARIABLE was way faster than reading a FILE on the file system... Why this result ?Is there a way to optimize the perfCat.zsh script by reducing the number of accesses to the file system ?

View 9 Replies View RelatedOn a Linux CD/DVD, there are compressed filesystem images for the live version for KDE or Gnome for example, but they have no extension, but they are clearly an image file ( compressed filesystem images for the live version before installation ) !!
I was wondering, How do I mount these compressed filesystem images, after I copy the ISO content of the CD/DVD on my system .... I want to edit some files or packages and make some changes, like if I want to customize a live version of gnome for example ! ... ( I know you might be tempted to tell me to use KIWI etc to customize etc ..... ) ... but I want to be able to mount the compressed file system image, then edit it for reading and writing while it is in a subdirectory on its own ... i want to open it ! ... is there a way to do this ??? ... these type of files have no extension ...
i can open this compressed filesystem image then to edit for read & write ... before I roll it back again ..... If and when I succeed .... what should I watch out for ? ... will the same compressed file image but slightly modified work again ?
PS. that same question could be kind of translated or be extended like : how do I use unionfs/squashfs programs on the command line to mount these image files with no extension for read & write mode ???
If i download files from the internet to the ubuntu home download folder will that kill off windows viruses? Ive also have avast on demand scanner-but are anti-viruses effective against windows viruses these days?

View 5 Replies View RelatedMy Windows XP Pro laptop has been attacked! Windows will no longer update and Microsoft Security Essentials will not update either. I've been trying to resolve the issue for over two weeks with Microsoft support, but it's just taking too long. I also tried some rescue CD options (all running some form of Linux, obviously):
- BitDefender Rescue CD (removed infections, now detects nothing),
- Kaspersky Rescue CD 10 (removed infections, now detects nothing),
- Trinity Rescue CD (won't load AV Engine, so can't use it to do anything).
Malwarebytes cleaned a bunch of stuff, but will not clean the final threat detected (it's supposed to get deleted on reboot, but never does). Hijack.FolderOptions is stuck in the accursed registry, and it keeps causing Windows Explorer to crash. I cannot rename files or work with them or everything just crashes.
So I'm ready to reinstall XP from scratch, and add a dual boot with Xubuntu & LXDE, which I'm already running on a much older laptop.
Question: I want to rescue the files I need. My idea was:
1) Install Xubuntu with dual boot.
2) Copy over files from Windows XP partition using Xubuntu.
3) Back up files to an external drive using Xubuntu.
4) Reinstall XP Pro and format hard drive.
5) Reinstall Xubuntu with dual boot.
6) Use Xubuntu for daily use.
7) Only use XP for those tasks that require it (TomTom updates ...)
Should I be concerned about the security risk from copying files from the Windows partition to the Xubuntu partition, and from there onto an external hard drive?
Is this the way to do it, or is there a better way? I just want my laptop back in working order. Right now I can't use it for anything.
Recently I've been finding two strange-looking files on my Windows shared folders! Their names are 'khy' and 'qffhtx.exe', they appear as hidden, and they're hard to delete!! especially the first one because it has no extension. I use Ubuntu 10.10, but I am worried because I also dual-boot Windows XP. Today I tried to open the .exe file in nautilus to see what is inside and I received the message "Unable to open archive", 'khy' is apparently an empty text file. Then I unmounted my /home partition so my files are out of the way, and I ran the .exe file using WINE,
Now I have a strange-looking applet on my top panel!! and it says "Script paused", also it says "Exit', and also Wine command prompt says something strange about "LockWindowUpdate", don't imagine it I'll post the screenshots so you can see it for yourselves. Also --and this is weird-- the virus apparently is trying to call a Windows process named csrcs.exe!! Again, I'll post the screenshots.
If this is a virus, then it's like a fish out of the water on my Ubuntu, it's probably trying to do something but it can't find its way around, it's kinda funny, but Im worried because I also dual-boot Windows XP, I'm having a hard time trying to remember the name KHY, it's a very weird acronym, it's the acronym of a disease, according to what I googled, i'm sure it's a virus!!! Anyway it's HARD to remember!!!

I have two cryptsetup volumes with the same password that I want to open in a bash script, and I want to avoid writing the passphrase twice. I was thinking of using read -s. Is there any security problems with this?The other alternative would be to have a password file on a small partition encrypted with a passphrase. Then only give the passphrase and let the script open up all encrypted volumes using the password file. However this seems overly complicated. But is it more secure?
View 3 Replies View RelatedMy main workstation incorporates a mixture of ext3, ext4, and NTFS partitions scattered across a number of hard drives. Several of the ext4 partitions are encrypted, and I intend to encrypt the rest of the Linux partitions in the near future.I run VMware workstation, with several Windows OS guests, including Win2K, WinXP and Win7. My Win7 VM is installed on a virtual hard disk, and that virtual hard disk is encrypted using VMware facilities.So this leaves me with a bunch of NTFS partitions that are not encrypted. These are physical partitions on a couple of different hard drives. The reason I have them is ancient and historical, and as I have upgraded my system over time I have maintained the architecture due to the extreme difficulty of rearranging Windows systems.I still need to maintain Win2K and WinXP support, and rearranging those virtual machines would represent a hideous nightmare for me; I really want to maintain the same hard drive partition architecture.But I want to encrypt the NTFS partitions, in a fashion that can be handled by any of the Windows operating systems, AND can be accessed for read and write from Linux.Is this possible? If not using Windows facilities (I don't think ntfs-3g handles encryption, and there are known backdoors in the Windows facilities anyway), is there any third party solution that would work? Would True Crypt do the job in a fashion that would permit access from all the various operating systems, as required? I do generally mount the NTFS partitions in whichever Windows VM is appropriate, then share them out via SMB, but there are circumstances (like when a VM is not running) where I will directly hit them from Linux. So, it is possible for me to contemplate a solution that only works from Windows, but this would cost me the ability to repair/modify those filesystems directly from Linux, which under certain circumstances (a malfunction of the VM, for instance) could be a problem.

I always encrypt them with GPG, but there still is that original non-encrypted file left that needs to be deleted. I looked into tools like wipe, and shred but they all say that it really doesn't help on journaling filesystems directly on their man page.
I am not asking how to wipe the whole drive with dd or anything, but I am simply asking if there is a tool that'll delete a single file securely.

Some of the files just give e one line of what looks like formatting info and the rest of the files show the text but in the middle of garbage and not formatted. If I use a winXP machine and get the MSWord add-on from MS it will read these. I do not like to use Win machines and also I need a batch method for the conversion, either to odf or docx format.

I have 2 groups: tech, and techAdmin. tech can read and execute within tech/. techAdmin can read, write, execute. I have 4 users: user1, user2, user3, user4. user1 and user2 is a member of techAdmin, user3 and user4 are members of tech. simple so far...but wait here's the problem. The configuration files that I'm hoping on using will be a straight forward syntax using "#" for comments and variables will be declared using "foo=hello". I don't need a lot of items in the configuration files, but enough to change needed settings. I'm not wanting to use external libraries (how are you going to learn if you can't do it yourself? :P) and I'm hoping to write it from scratch. If someone could please point me to a tutorial on how to do this or even some working code I may be able to figure it out. I am using the C programming language also(as I like it more than C++, sorry).
