Ubuntu :: No Privileged Access To Folders?
Jan 19, 2010
Is there a reason I dont have privileged access to any of my folders, in /home, or anywhere else?Running Ubuntu Karmic and Win 7, with a separate partition to share files between both OS. It was working fine, until I installed Kubuntu on a separate partition, and now Ubuntu acts funny (i can browse anywhere, but cant create new folders, download files, execute files, etc. The problem exists in any and all folders (/ and /home)I can do so if I access nautilus as root...I now reinstalled ubuntu, and still the same problem.

Whenever I try to do anything that requires administrative permissions, including Synaptic, the Update Manager, or installing something on the Software Center, the "Starting Administrative Application" task comes up on the window list, but then the window does not come up and whatever action was supposed to be taken does not happen; no error messages, nothing. Also, whenever I use su or sudo in the command prompt, nothing shows up when I type my password; then when I hit Enter, it gives me an authentication error.
EDIT: It seems that the "Add/Remove Applications" program as well as the Software center do not have this problem. Synaptic and the Updates Manager, however, still do not work.

I am trying to run su as a non privileged user to log in as root. However, this only works when I make /etc/shadow world readable. I have /lib/security/unix_chkpwd as a setuid root executable
I use the following pam-file for su:
Code:
# Begin /etc/pam.d/su
auth sufficient pam_rootok.so
auth required pam_unix.so
account required pam_unix.so
session optional pam_mail.so

How do you open a program, in this instance "Zenmap", from the desktop in a user account when it requires root privileges? Is there a way to be prompted for the password, the same way, for instance, you're prompted when mounting a new file system or making a change to the system? I tried entering 'sudo /usr/bin/zenmap' when creating the shortcut, however that didn't work.

Lately (since about Ubuntu 9.10 though I'm on 10.4 now) there seems a trend towards showing folders in the GUI but not through the command line interface. Most prominent examples are the trash folder ("Waste basket", nowadays) and Samba mounts.
As it happens, I *like* the command line and would rather access those folders from CLI rather than having to use the GUI.
The folders don't show up in /etc/mtab either. Yet in "Places" they show up with an eject button next to them, implying they're mounted. Right clicking the folders in "Places" doesn't allow me to show folder properties or path. It doesn't give any further clues.
So, where did my trash folder, samba mounts, usb drives go? I'd like to be in control of my system rather than to have it control me!

I have a strange problem. I have two Linux boxes. They are connected via a LAN. From machine 1 (Fedora Core 8) I can ssh to machine 2 (Fedora Core 3)without any problems if I am logged in as root on machine 1. If I am logged in as any other non-privileged user and attempt to ssh to machine 2, I get a segmentation fault and the connection is dropped (after ssh asks for the password).
Everything was working up until last Friday (8/6/2010). I did upgrade the machine 1 from 512Kb to 2.0Gb memory then..
machine1_root#ssh anyaccount@machine2 <-This works
machine1_anyotheraccount$ssh anyaccount@machine2 <-segmentation fault

I have installed ubuntu in dual boot in XP
Now i would like to be able to quickly access folders on XP partition, maybe with shortcuts on desktop?
However if i create those shortcuts and restart computer the shortcuts are no longer valid.
Any way around this, or is there a better way to reach XP partition folders without going to root of drive every time?

I am new to Ubuntu and have been using it for a few months. Recently when I have gone to the Places drop down box and tried to get into any of my folders i get this message:
Quote:
Could not open location 'file:///home/username' Failed to execute child process "/usr/bin/arista-transcode" (No such file or directory) I have looked through the forum for the past few days and have still not found a solution that works.

Two days ago my Windows 7 just crashed and it doesn't work any more. Using a computer in a Internet point a downloaded Ubuntu 10.10 Live and now I'm running it in my computer. I would like to install Ubuntu definitely on my computer but before I would like to find all my old file from Windows 7. In Places/Computer has only the File System and nothing else. In System/Administration/Disk Utility I can see my 320 GB hard Disk (ATA Samsung HM3200II) but I can't do anything in that. I tried to use the Ubuntu 10.10 live in other computer and this work perfectly, but in this one no. What can I do to right now?

Following a re-install of Ubuntu 9.04 I now find that I am now unable to access some of the Windows folders on the "C:/> Drive" as I did before the re-install was done.
Using the access from "Places" only some of the folders are listed. I have also been trying to re-configure "Wine" to run one or two of the applications in Windows. However, I was able to configure one such application to run but from the External HDD, because I had a backup copy of the ".exe" file. I transferred this file to the Internal HDD and it now runs satisfactory. The other applications are inaccessible because of this "Access" shortcoming. Strangely, I somehow was able to get to the "Start Menu" in Windows listing all the applications' shortcut links, but sadly not the Programs Folder with the ".exe" files in Windows.
I would appreciate any help and/or advice of how I can overcome this problem to enable me to access all Folders in Windows XP.

while hardening a red hat enterprise 5 installation I have done something that causes the sessions of all user accounts except root to close immediately after authentication. in the /var/log/secure log file it will show three log entries per attempt:
<date/time><hostname> login: pam_unix(login:session): session opened for user fred by LOGIN(uid=0)
<date/time><hostname> login: LOGIN ON tty1 BY fred
<date/time><hostname> login: pam_unix(login:session): session closed for user fred
Since I did a number of things and have not been able to identify what caused this.

I'm looking to set up some kind of a server so my friends can access my music folder. I've managed to set it up so that users on my LAN can do this, but I can't figure out how to make this available on the internet. Is there an easy way to do this? how to set up an FTP server, but none of these tell me how to configure my router, or what IP address I will need to access the folder from the internet.

I am trying to setup vpn to access folders and files from my school. VPN is connected now through networkmanager, but I don't know how to actually gain access to the folders on the school server.
Is it through nautilus? Or the "Connect to Server"? The school provides addresses that begins with \.. something, and I have tried typing it in to nautilus and the "Connect to Server" but it fails to connect.
I have googled this but all I find is how to connect to vpn manually or through networkmanager, and not how I then can access the folders on the server.

Prior to upgrading from Karmic to Lucid I could access shared folders on my partners XP system. Now when I attempt to connect to the shared folder I am unable to see the folders. When I display the network I can see MSHOME but thereafter end up with the following :"Unable to mount locationFailed to retrieve share list from server"Strangely enough I am able to connect to another Lucid system easily enough from my laptop. In each instance both my Lucid systems and the XP one are connected via wireless and as far as I can see the setup on the XP system is networked OK.

I find it very strange that you can just insert Ubuntu installation CD in any PC, and have unlimited access to all users' My Documents folders on that computer. It doesn't even ask for password, nothing. I can take Ubuntu CD with me and copy data from all PCs in the company where I work.

When I try to access a network connected folder bying on etwork->ComputerName->FolderName, I almost always get this message:Unable to mount locationDBus error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Message did not receive a reply (timeout by message bus)If I click OK and try again a few times, sometimes it will connect and everything is fine after that. If not, I can issue a mount command in the terminal and access the /mnt folder that way with no problems, but clicking Network, I still get the timeout command.

1- I've set up 3 virtual users, one of them is a system one (with a different password) and writes on his own home folder. With this one I haven't found any problems yet, but with the other 2 users I can't access files/folders created by them. It's a permissions problem for sure, but I'm not sure how to correct it.With these users I can upload files, create files and create folders. The problem is I can't access what I create (I can't enter a folder I created but it is there and I can upload files into it).
2- Whenever I turn on ssl_enable=YES I can't access the server (even from the server itself when I connect to localhost, It's a regular Ubuntu installation). Here's the config file for the users:
Code:
write_enable=YES
anon_mkdir_write_enable=YES
anon_other_write_enable=YES[code].....

I always find myself stuck when it comes to sharing folders across networks.
I just installed ubuntu on a pc, with 2 other pc's in my network - one runs Windows XP and the other Windows 7.
When I go to Network -> Windows Network -> WORKGROUP I can see both Windows computers. But when I try to open either one of them, it asks me for a username and password. Now, neither of the Windows machines have passwords (they just login automatically).
(I haven't used Ubuntu since the earlier versions and remember having to go through samba and set up config files, etc.).

I configured my apache2. On my Intrepid I had apache2.0 while on my Karmic I have a apache2.2. Aftere configuring I tested it and got a an error page when I tested it in my web browser. I looked into the log file that showed the following error "[client 127.0.0.1] (13)Permission denied: access to /my_dir/ denied".
It appears apache2.2 can't access directories in my home folder. File system rights for the files and folders are correct. There is no AppArmor profile for Apache. User settings in "/etc/apache2/apache2.conf" file are correct. The inaccessible folder in "/etc/apache2/sites-available/default" looks as follows:
[Code]...
A trick using symbolic links didn't work either. On my previous Intrepid with Apache 2.0 my pages worked like a charm. Now on my current Karmic (before apache2.conf was pre configured, now it's not) with Apache 2.2 my pages are wrecked. how I can make Apache2.2 access folders in my home folder and which settings are needed in default file for that?

Just installed lamp, I can access phpmyadmin mysql is set up and everything. When I try to view a directory [URL] I get an access denied error.
EDIT: I changed the permissions of the "folder" folder itself, I can access everything in that directory now but not any other folders in it. Do I really need to go through every folder every time and change the permissions?

I've managed to setup Ubuntu Server 9.10, and created folders/files toview/edit/execute with Windows and Mac.
Now here is my dilemma, this is for a home server, and I will have 4 users(1 for myself, one with "admin" rights, my fiance(mac user), media pc, and a "guest" account for the computer or 2 that are out in the public(they don't need access to my taxes ).
I'd like to have it so that on my laptop, I can access the whole server, but some files/folders would even need me to put in a password. I want to do this because my fiance gets delete happy and deletes things, so if she goes on my computer she won't delete important info. I'd like her to have access to music, photos, and videos, as well as her having her own folder that she can treat as her hard drive.
The question is, do I need to setup a domain for this, or can I get away with a workgroup?
