I can boot up ubuntu but it's just showing the default background, the login prompt won't come up. What do I do? Startx doesn't work in the terminal (ctrl-alt F1), it gives an error. I can log in as root (recovery mode) and startx works and the desktop comes up though.

View 2 Replies View RelatedWhenever I load up my computer, Ubuntu comes up with a command line asking for my user name and password. I can type all that in, and get into the system, but it's still in the command line. If I type startx, it will then load the GUI desktop just fine. Is there any particular reason it wont' boot straight into a GUI login screen?
I originally had Ubuntu dual booted with Windows 7, and was having this problem. When I installed Ubuntu fresh on an external hdd, the issue went away. However, I recently formatted the hdd and re-installed Ubuntu and now it's doing this again.
When I try and login at the main login in prompt after boot, it just returns me back to the prompt again.

I just installed Fedora 12 on a laptop. I changed the default shell on the root account to /bin/tcsh and changed the runlevel to 3 and then rebooted. Now I can't login into the root account: it returns me immediately to the login prompt and I can't see any error message (the screen is cleared).Why is this happening?Can I boot into some sort of safe mode so I can undo my changes to the /etc/inittab and /etc/passwd file?I tried booting with a Live CD with the intention of mounting the filesystem and making the changes, but the new filesystem is a LVM and it won't let me mount it (or I don't know how to mount a Logical Volume).

It accepts the password, starts to load, but then dies and dumps me back at the login prompt again.Attempting to login from the prompt, sometimes works (there is specific condition), and when it does, I then attempt to "startx". OK, it complains the display is already in use, so I then "startx -- :1". Everything starts to load, but then fails again like the graphical login.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI was trying to install the nvidia drivers then when I reboot all I get is a command line. Startx does not work, it says no screens found. I was dumb and uninstalled the nvidia drivers too not realizing my internet didn't work in the command line. I need to install the drivers from the live cd unless there is another way. I don't want to have to reinstall!
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm having a pretty serious problem, whenever I try to boot into Ubuntu the screen goes black, I see a flash of purple or violet and then i get a prompt asking for my login credentials, afterwards I'm stuck with a terminal trying to start the gui... I don't know what I'm doing wrong, fresh install tried to reboot after getting the display driversinstalled idk if that could be a problem. I tried to commands in the terminal already:
startx
sudo service gdm start

I'm trying to install the magnificent ubuntu 10.10 on my brand new Dell LATITUDE E5510. The installation works fine. I installed it with a working internet connexion ... so the drivers should be there. Then when booting, the GUI does not start I get the console instead...
I tried several things:
- run startx --> I get a blank screen where even CTRL+ALT+F1 does not work anymore

--> just returns without anything on the screen, no error no nothing
- run in failsafeX mode, I get:

Then I get the login page but it doesn't go any further, when I type my login/password it comes back to the login page...

I have a problem with my gui . i have I810 onboard graphics . it says something like ( agpgart not there ) celeron 633mhz old machine 256 mg ram 20gb master and 7 gb slave . first drive is debian 2.4 and slave is winxp . i also have a lt winmodem i would like to get goin . i cant seem to figure out how to mount the floppy . i tried vi /etc/fstab but cant figure out the lingo .when i loaded it before i had everything working ,kde , floppy ,sound, but no modem .im totally stuck in command line (witch is fun ), because my cdrom went out so i cant just reload debian. i hope this makes some kind of sense to someone .

I was using ffmpeg and mencoder making a video of some jpgs of my grandson when something weird happened.I entered a chmod command and then all I got was ">" on the left side of the terminal.I closed the terminal and reopened it and got back to where I was at and ended up with the same thing.I can not enter exit or anything else. I just have to close it.Rebooting didn't even help it. Now I cannot enter other commands like an ffmpeg command.I was able to cd to where I wanted to go, but when I got there and tried about any command I ended up with a ">" prompt.

If this is always true, how do I change my prompt to simply "$" and the root prompt to simply "#"?

I program in C with geany and two terminals open; one to compile and one to test the compiled program. The thing is that it's hard to the eyes to keep track of the messages and such when the terminal prompt is too long:

I don't get a UI login prompt at startup and it makes a sound. I'm using 10.04, though this did happen to me in 9.0x as well. When I press ctrl-alt-F1, I login and sudo gdm stop and do sudo startx this seems to put me at root and there is an error with the applets and the panel does not load. "Killall gnome-panel" does not fix it.
If I simply do startx (w/o going to root), it goes to a black screen and if I press ctrl-alt-F1 it repeats "No protocol specified" until I get the error message xinit: Resource file temporary unavailable (errno 11): unable to connect to Xserver.
I managed to change the background by copying over a new image file to some directory. However, there is still the big boring login window. Is there any way to change that? I'd like something darker, and smaller. I copied over the image file to /usr/share/backgrounds/warty-final-ubuntu.png My image file was actually a jpeg file, but copying it over to /usr/share/backgrounds/warty-final-ubuntu.png posed no problems.

I would like it to just display login without the server name or the new server name. I am not sure how that info go in the login prompt to begin.
To flesh out my *nix capability, I create new identities and give them the functionality that I liked in previous ones. I've added the "open terminal here" script, which I find invaluable. Now I want to change the prompt. This is what the terminal does right now:

Ive just done a fresh install of F13, after an install of AMD Cat 10.7 screwed up my system.Although everything works, ive just noticed that when I open a terminal, instead of my username prompt, I now have "bash-4.1$".Firstly is this a problem? and if so how can I get my normal prompt back?

But in a perticular machine ubuntu HH, makes the screen garbled during installation and after installation at login prompt, but screen is just OK before the login prompt. This is happening in one machine and when i tried to load ubuntu 9 and fedora core in this machine, all goes fine (installation and use) means machine is reasonably ok. As I load edubuntu on HH, hence this ubuntu loading is important for me.
View 1 Replies View RelatedWhenever I boot up my computer, Ubuntu (10.4) brings me to my desktop, then immediately displays a prompt to enter my login keyring. After some searching on the forums, it appears that this is because I set my laptop to auto-login. Am I missing something here, but what does auto-login have to do the the keyring? Why do I even need to enter that password? I understand that many Ubuntu users are picky about security, but why isn't their any option to disable this? It's almost as bad as UAC from Vista, which is one of the reasons I'm dual-booting Ubuntu in the first place. This is an annoying "problem" that has been bugging me since I first installed Ubuntu - how can I change it?

However, about half the time i would boot to reach only a login prompt. If i used CTRL ALT DEL i would then reboot usually into the GUI.So now i only reach a login prompt all the time. The arrows don't work, they just put the arrow characters in the prompt. Everything else seems to be ok. Also, when I say logged in as User, I meant a new user I just created.
