but that didnt copy the .* folders. Im after the firefox and thunderbird folders mainly, but all of them is OK too.

How can I copy the .* folders from one user home folder to another and then give the correct permissions to the new user.
just a general weirdness, but some folders that are in my /home folder don't show up. if i check "show hidden folders", they still don't show up. for all terms and purposes, they are simply not there. however, if i search for them through the search tool, or beagle, they show up as being in my /home folder. so, anyone have any idea how this happened, or how i can remedy this?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm pretty new to Ubuntu and it might not be possible to do what I want to do here. First I'll explain the situation. Throught trying to tidy up my mp3 collection usign various pieces of software I now have a folder structure that I want (My MusicArtistalbum rack), However, in the process, I have been left with lots of other folders - these have had the mp3's removed but they contain other files (artwork, playlists, .nfo files - that kind of thing).
What I'm looking for is either a premade solution or help with a script to do the following : Check all folders in my music folder, if the folder doesn't contain any mp3's then check the subfolders, if none of them contain mp3's then delete the main folder (regardless of what otehr files are within it).
It seems like I should be able to do this - but not sure how. Incidentally, I have backed up my music folder to an external disk - so I can't do any lasting damage
I have a shared NTFS partition ("shared") that I use for data for both Windows and Ubuntu. How can I mount the music folder on shared to $Home/Music, and the Videos folder on shared to $Home/Videos? I want to mount the different folders on the partition to different folders in home.

This does not work. If I delete them manually it works fine, but in the script it just finishes quickly. When the variables are echoed they display the values correctly.
I installed avast anti-virus on my 10.04 T42p thinkpad. It immediately slowed to a walk! and the registration number did not work and caused an error message. I tried to reinstall the program with no improvement/same result. then tried to remove the program from the machine with dpkg. Seemed to get rid of it but some of the folders it created are still there and won't let me trash them. The machine still seems slow, so how do I get rid of all traces of avast?

I'm trying to clean up a few hundred thousand mp3 files and I'm dying to find a way to automate some of the mechanical tasks I keep doing. It seems like at least two of these tasks could be easily accomplished with something at the command line, but I don't have the chops/know-how to figure out how (and would really rather not trial and error with batch deleting files & folders...).
1) Delete all folders named "_MACOSX" (and all subfolders/files contained therein) -- Basically, I'd like to apply this command to a few hundred directories that may or may not contain a subfolder called "_MACOSX" that I'd really like to get rid of.
2) Delete all files named "*.m3u". -- Similar to the first, I want to automatically scan all directories and subdirectories in a given location for all instances of this file-type and delete them wherever they're found.
3) Move all files named *.txt", "*.doc", "*.pdf" to a specific location. -- Similar to the last, except instead of deleting, I'd like to just move them, so that if there is anything worth keeping, I can keep it.

$X contains only other folders so I dont have to worry about regular files but any kind of more "advanced" solution would work.
I've followed some instructions on installing a new hard drive on Ubuntu ("Installing a New Hard Drive" and "HOWTO move /home to a new hard drive") and I've now successfully got my new drive working with /home. Everything looks to be in perfect working order.Now I'm wondering how to delete my original /home folder. Running "df -h" still shows 97% usage on my / partition and I'd like to clear out the old /home to free up all that space. I just don't know where these files are now is all.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a dual-boot macbook with an OS X partition and an ubuntu partition. When I first installed ubuntu, I changed my home folder to my OS X home directory to synchronize all my files from both. My home directory is now /media/sda2/Users/username/. In a regular home folder, the icons for Documents, Music, Pictures, Movies, etc. are different (not just with emblems, but actually different icons). But when I changed my home folder, these subfolders' icons stayed the same as regular folder icons and I can't figure out a way to change that default setting. I know how to change the icons for each folder manually, but these changes don't appear everywhere (i.e. nautilus, places, etc). Furthermore, every time I change my icon theme, I would have to manually reassign icons for these folders. Is there a way to globally change the folder icons for these folders?

I have 2 partitions mounted on my ubuntu desktop, one is Windows C: drive labeled "Core" and the other is D: drive labeled "Reserve" but for some reason I have a second Windows folder on my desktop, when I attempted to delete it it began to delete the Windows files as well, one forum said to right click and "remove from desktop" but this option isnt in the menu. After checking my tmp folder I found out some strange hidden and unhidden folders of programs that I have not used or downloaded. After removing each one using sudo rm -rf some folders insist on re-appearing, and after a reboot all folders are back.
Moreover, trying netstat -l, found that many of these files are in listening state.
How can I permanently erase them?
I'm dipping my toes into some bash scripting and was wondering if there was a way to delete a file not based on how old it is, but rather how many other files are currently in the folder... or something to that effect....
What I'm doing is creating a script to back up a folder nightly. I'd like to keep a maximum of 3 backups. However in case the script for some reason fails to run one night (computer turned off possibly) I don't want to set the condition for deletion to be the date.
I know that if I run:

that it will delete everything older than three days. -atime and -ctime don't seem to be what I"m looking for... is there another command I can use to achieve what I"m trying to?
I have Ubuntu Jaunty 9.04 updated to 9.10 and have downloaded Remaster from Remastersys. I followed all of the instructions, which were simple enough. However, there must be some instructions missing as the process failed. Working with Remaster through Synaptic Manager, the iso was downloaded into my "home" folder into its own Remaster folder. It was not the iso, like you get when downloading a distro from the Internet, which downloads just an iso onto the Desktop. Inside the folder were a bunch of empty files (I know, because I opened them) and an iso . At this point the Remaster instruction stop. They do not say what to do with the other files, or what they have to do with the iso of my Ubuntu layout. So, like any other iso (once I knew which one was the iso of my setup), I double clicked on it and it ran me through the process of accessing the DVD to burn it. Which I did. I tested it and it failed with some kind of message to the effect that certain files were missing or it could not read it. So, I thought, I would have to do the 'hunt and peck' method and experiment a few times like I did with the ordinary distro downloads until I get it right. But first, I would have to dump the Remaster folder in the "home" folder since it took up so much space on my hard drive. Wrong! I come to find out it is in something called "root" and that I do not have permission to do anything with it but "copy" it. Great. Just great! Now what do I do. I tried to change permissions, but was not allowed to do that either. The only thing I could think of - and dread - was the idea of having to wipe my hard drive and go through the whole reinstall procedures, which takes me days, just because Remaster has locked itself into my system - and there is no 'back door' to get out of it.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm not positive if this is in the correct section but I am hoping so. I am running dual-boot with Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.10. I hunted down my files from Windows that I need for school (old papers, research, etc.) and found it under "file system" --> "host" --> "users" --> "zbollman". I can access all of my files and I'm happy now that I don't have to boot between the two constantly to get what I need. However, I tried to copy the file to my home folder, but it said I do not have enough room. I'm about 5GB short. How do I go about allocating more space so that I can copy this folder so that all of my information is easily accessible?

I was able to recover the data from the folder by using a program off the Ultimate Boot CD for Windows called Handy Recovery, but I don't know how to get rid of the folder and files I had backed up. "What's the problem if it's gone?" you might ask? Because the hard drive space is being taken up with the files. Installed Ubuntu along with Debian on my Notebook and use Grub Manager to choose between them on startup. Since i like Debian now a lot (in past days it was a very hard system to handle, but there has been some progress i noticed), i have to change some things (want Debian as main system now) For Ubuntu i have: (was meant to be main system on Notebook) "/", "/home" and a "swap" partition, but since i am now going to use mainly Debian, i wanted to store my files all in the "/home"-folder of my extended Ubuntu partition (has much more space available) not in the "/home" folder of the Debian system. So i want both (Debian and Ubuntu) to use the same extended partition ("/home") which i created for Ubuntu to save their files like downloads, videos, and so on.
View 14 Replies View RelatedThe problem i have is that the folders i create in my home folder (/home/USRNAME/) now appear on my desktop (but not inside the desktop folder... since it no longer exists, u'll see). After a clean install of 11.04, there were a few default folders in my home folder (documents, music, videos, etc) however, i decided to rename them. After doing that, all of them (even the ones i didnt rename, like ubuntu one and templates appeared on my desktop (but not the desktop folder). I thought they were links, so i deleted the ones i saw on my desktop, and to my suprise, all the folders in my home folder have disappeared! Now everytime i create a new folder in my home folder it appears on my desktop, on top of my wallpaper, and if i delete either of them, both go away.
View 9 Replies View RelatedHaving been converted to using "Linux" about 8 months ago, and gaining confidence to try different distros, and figuring out how to 'keep' my Home folder, I've had great fun trying them out and learning as I go. The latest distro I'm trying is Kubuntu, which I really like and will keep for a while. However, when I was partitioning in the set-up, I omitted to create my home folder. Instead I now have is a partition the size of my "old" home folder, and to which I have to sign into to gain access. The files are all there so that is no problem.
1. What i would like to know is if this set-up is OK, or should I change it so that it is actually in the home folder (if so how?( a re-install?))
2. If I should decide to try out another distro in the future will this be safe to change to "home"?.
