Ubuntu Servers :: FTP Slow In Certain Folders / Make It Up?
Jul 21, 2010
I posted this yesterday, but my post completely disappeared (I looked high and low -- nothing.)
I am using Ubuntu Server 10.04, all the latests updates.
For an FTP Server, I use ProFTP.
One specific directory, and it's subdirectories on my server will not download at a reasonable rate. They move at about 17-50KBPS.
All other folders work fine, at around 1.5-2.5MBPS.
What is going on? I have no idea how to troubleshoot this. The files being transfered are in a directory under home. They should have no permissions issues (I reapplied the permissions I want already), I tried restarting ProFTP, the files vary in sizes (from a few kilobytes to about 120 megabytes).
I use Webmin for most web management.
I am not having overload issues with my network card or CPU utilization while downloading these files. They are being accessed from the local network.
This issue is taxing because the files in question are backup files.
I basicly want certian folders to deny access to all clients exept those that supply the correct user name and password. I tried following the directions here (for the basic authentication), but its not working.i have
My first post. I've been using Ubuntu Server edition (Hardy) happily for some time now.
I use sudo regularly during configuration of new services. It always works/authorises within seconds, however, it recently became very slow, to the point of being nearly unusable.
In /var/log/auth.log I noticed a regular working pattern like this code...
I installed avast anti-virus on my 10.04 T42p thinkpad. It immediately slowed to a walk! and the registration number did not work and caused an error message. I tried to reinstall the program with no improvement/same result. then tried to remove the program from the machine with dpkg. Seemed to get rid of it but some of the folders it created are still there and won't let me trash them. The machine still seems slow, so how do I get rid of all traces of avast?
With Ubuntu 9.10 and 10.0.4 I have seen that the nautilus filemanager is extremely slow with folders that contains many files or/and folders.I made sure that "Assistive Technologies" is diable. On the filemanager preference I set all preview to "Never", tried all possible views, but the filemanager remains extremely slow. It seems like it becomes even slower when the subfolders in the folder you are viewing new files are being created by for example a program. Possibly nautilus filemanager is updating continuously ?
I use to be using debian etch nautilus file manager. With the same directories, nautilus in debain etch was working much faster. But contrary to the one in Ubuntu 9.10 and 10.0.4 is is far less stable. It seems like the newer version is more stable but however extremely much slower. I was wondering if I am missing something. Or whether this is a bug. If it is a bug, then I am wondering when this is going to be solved in nautlius filemanager.
Anybody know why fedora 14 is so slow open partitions on same the hard disc as the OS and other hard discs. Is there a problem with Nautilus, the kernel or the nvidia driver or something else? On average it takes me 10-15 seconds to open a new partition in nautilus. The system as it stands is not up to scratch and i am sorry to say it is really unusable. Do i hang in there for a while and hope for a fix or do i go back to fedora 13?
Does anyone know a way I can make Wine be able to see my Ubuntu folders? I want to be able to use iTunes with Wine but also be able to just use my home folder instead of putting music and stuff in the Wine folders.
First off please don't say "go read the man page". I need instructions for newbies
I basically want certain folders to deny access to all clients exept those that supply the correct user name and password. I tried following the directions here (for the basic authentication), but its not working. Someone kind enough to help out a confused person like myself?
New ubuntu user here, and i feel 100% comfortable with it now other then command line
i love it, feels better then windows, and im in awe at how fast it boots
i have 2 gripes only, that im hoping can be fixed!
is there anyway to make ntfs hidden fils hidden again?
i have a storage partition that i use on windows, and now ubuntu, the problem is theres all sorts o wierd ****
like "system voume information, RECYCLEBIN-O1" and wierd crap like that
its usually hidden in windows, but visible and clickable in ubuntu
is there some way to hide these files and folders? i think windows needs them, but they look so bad and ruin my folder organization
and also, is there some way to have my storage partition always mounted? each time i restart i lose my music library in rhythembox, and have to redirect it to my music folder on my storage drive.
I have an folder with different websites saved on it but when I'm about to extract it to an .zip and unextract it on Windows it says something like wrong name. What to do?DIT: Would it work if I installed VMware Workstation on my PC?
I've got a NAS running and I'd like to somehow make some of the folders and files invisible to certain users only. For example, if I 'ls' a directory, I want to see files 'a', 'b', and 'c'. But if another user does 'ls' in the same directory, I only want them to be able to see 'a' listed.I know I can use 'chmod +700' to make certain files not able to be read/written, but the filename would still appear in a 'ls'.I know I can put certain files inside of a '.hidden' file in the folder, but then it would be hiEdit : I'd also like to mention that the users that connect to the NAS could be coming from Windows or Mac operating systems. So hopefully the solution would work for users from those systems also..
I'm new to ubuntu (installed 3 days ago). I have two disks in my notebook - one hdd (big, 320GB) and one ssd (very fast, 120GB). Everything is on ssd now, but I want to know how can I split my home directory to make config folders (like .thunderbird, .mozilla, .purple) to use ssd (for very fast response), and put movies, pictures, downloads and other folders to use hdd (a lot of space). Simply mounting hdd as /home is not a good option, becouse config files would be on hdd also. Should I mount (or link) all folders like /home/username/Videos to hdd, or is there a better solution?
I upgraded my computer to a AMD 1055T 6 core cpu and a new install with 8 gigs of ram. I notice that alot of things are lagging. I have the new updates and it is really slow and that is when I reset any ideas?
i have been copying dvd's and now i do not have enough room in my temporary folder, but i cannot find out how to delete the folders and make space to continue
I'm playing with apache (and to be quite honest have no idea what I'm doing at this stage!) and currently have a large number of files and folders on the sad little site. One thing that is really bothering me is that files and folders both appear the same. I'm not looking for anything fancy. Something like this is more than adequate. Right now there is simply a dot next to each item.
Is it possible to make a script that makes a tree of all folders and subfolders and outputs it to either a .txt file or .pdf? All folders except from one shall list 2 levels. The except folder all the way.
I've recently upgraded to 11.04.Till now, I could select an option to make the open folders on shutdown, to restore on startup. There was an option to restore running applications
I've stopped the download several times already due to it being so slow. I resumed the downloading at file 1991 (out of 2046 files....) but it's not budging from there. Are there really so many downloads going on today it is making it hard to download?
My disk is very slow after I installed ubuntu 10.04 over my old 9.04. Doing some tinkering helped a little code...
But it is still far too slow. On the other version, I had a custom partition setup, with the home partition with 100GB, and ext3 (and other partitions for swap, boot, root folder and space for a windows partition I never cared to install ).
This time I am using a standard Lynx setup (2 partitions, the swap and the main one with almost 250Gb, using ext4).
Some applications I develop, that use disk for some unit tests, are now very slow to work with. Is there a way to making it faster? Going back to 9.04? Waiting for 10,10? Gparting and making partitions smaller on ext3? I don't know if any of these will work.
I worry about mounting properly an external USB hard disk. It is a sata 1To NTFS formatted It works perfectly with a XP SP3. With xuxbuntu 10.10 , with ntfs-3g installed , it is VERY long to transfer data:it took almost 3 days for 360Go. When I connect to the station , it automatically mount by itself on /media/disk without any option;I suspect bad options are used and no use of NTFS-3G. How to oblige it to mount with good options?
I recently install Ubuntu 10.04 on my computer and enabled the top effects option when choosing desktop background, screensavers etc. It worked fine for a couple of days then started to take about 3-5 seconds up maximize any program it ran - it minizes them instantly but takes ages the opposite way around.
My laptop has a core duo processor, 3gb of RAM, a ATI 3400 512mb graphics card, when I ran Vista on it, it could easily handle Vista built in effects and run Crysis well on low settings - I very much doubt the problem is that my computer isnt powerful enough. Is there anyway I can get Ubuntu's special effects to work properly again? Atm normal effects wont work either - I am having to use the No Effects option.
I have read many threads but cannot find a solution on this code...
Now no matter how i transfer if its from HDD to HDD or to SSD i never get more then 18-20MB/sec, i just tried booting to my live CD and was able to transfer with 24-25MB/sec
This is really slow, since the worst (2.0TB) can do a minimum of 30 READ
Anybody got any ideas, this seems to be something that has plagued ubuntu for years, and no i don't want to try other distros, i tried almost all of them a year ago and finally went with ubuntu
I am administrating a lab in a university and every semester we need to delete all the home folders of the accounts for the next semester. I would like to make a bash script that does this automatically and having trouble with it. Note that I am writing my very first bash script. What I need to do is make a script to delete the following:
Delete everything in /home/$exp$num/$dir when "exp" could be either "rt", "ic" or "sp". "num" could run from 1(single digit) to 45 and dir is "profile" and "work".
This is what I tried to write:
Code:
#!/bin/sh cd /home for exp in "rt ic sp" do
[code]....
What seems to be the problem is the reading of "$exp$num" as a joint expression.
I have been through a lot of sites and googled allmost everything to get an answer about sharing folders on a Ubuntu Server with Windows clients.
Every site tells me, that the only way to get from windows to the shared folders on a ubuntu server, is by using some extra software, installed on the windows machine. Is this correct?
Ive been trying to figure out a method to upload (copy) all files and sub folders under that folder to my content delivery network, basically run it every 30 minutes.
Whats the best way to do it? I tested a few that I was reading about, one just copied files nd not sub folders, another moved all files.
I have Ubuntu 9.10 64bit on an AMD dual core proc with 4Gbt RAM I have installed XBMC from instructions here... http://wiki.xbmc.org/?title=HOW-TO_i...n_step-by-step I got as far as... ""XBMC is now installed and ready for use."", re-booted and loaded program. It loads OK but I cannot access/select the menus because the mouse pointer bears no relation to the mouse and the keyboard is no help either. Both are incredibly Slow!
