Ubuntu :: Script For Closing Evolution Before TAR Starts
Mar 19, 2011
I have a very simple backup script like so:
Code:
#!/bin/bash
tar -cvf /media/Media_Drive/tarball/homemazal.tar /home/mazal
tar -cvf /media/Media_Drive/tarball/werkstok.tar /media/4D84-E758
What I want to know is what can I add to the top to automatically close Evolution before the tar's starts. I'm worried that with Evolution open that some files might not be correctly backed up.

Using Unity in Ubuntu 11.04.
I open Evolution. I open an email. I click on the red X to close the window the email is in. The email is still open but the Evolution window is now closed.
This doesn't happen every time I close an email window, but more often than I'd like. To get back to Evolution, I have to close all open emails and then relaunch Evolution.
Is this a bug or is someone aware of a solution?

I found this email in my inbox. From time to time it's showing up here then Evolution starts downloading messages again and duplicates all my inbox. I think.

Sometime after I upgraded to ubuntu 9.10 I've been having trouble with my wireless network connection. It will usually log on to the network, then disconnect a shortly after. Then try to connect again, usually successfully, then it cuts off again. Then connects again, then disconnects. FWIW, ubuntu 9.10 works on a different machine pretty consistently, so I don't think its a problem with the router.

I've been running the Evolution mail system under Fedora-15/KDE for about a month now, and it has some very serious problems. I just noticed that it is available for SUSE, and figured that since KDE is the principal desktop supported by KDE the SUSE version may be fixed. Before I go through the very tedious process of getting the SUSE version to compile on Fedora, I'd like to know whether anyone has seen these problems with the SUSE version of Evolution:It ignores font control from the KDE Settings->Applications Appearance window, both KDE font control and GTK+ font control, also its own internal font control window.
It has trouble sending messages to an SMTP server, sometimes taking a l-o-n-g time, sometimes timing out. This can be temporarily cured by restarting it It crashes when a filter attempts to refile an outgoing message. It often asks if I want to recover messages that have never been lost. It often locks up receiving mail from a remote POP3 server. I can live with these, except for items 1 and 2, since I have workarounds. If you are fairly sure that you have not seen these problems with the SUSE version of Evolution

I had configured the evolution to send/recive email. After it had been configured, it could receive emails. Suddendly it can't fetch email anymore. In the inbox of evolution, there were about 200 emails. There are maybe 5K emails in the server, I guessed. I'm not sure whether it's the problem that there's one email in the server too big, so the evolution can not fetch it. The error of evolution is: error while fetching email. Evolution version: Evolution 2.28.0. OS version: Linux xxx2.6.32.9-70.fc12.i686.PAE #1 SMP Wed Mar 3 04:57:21 UTC 2010 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux I'm sure my network is fine, I use pop3 to receive email.
nslookup result:

i tried to update my evolution from 2.30.? to 2.32.1 usning
ppa
ppa:julenlanda/evolution
Because the exchange plugin didn't work i uninstalled evolution and removed the ppa. Now when i try to install evolution from the software centre i get this: Package dependencies cannot be resolved This error could be caused by required additional software packages which are missing or not installable. Furthermore there could be a conflict between software packages which are not allowed to be installed at the same time.
it asks me if I want to repair the catalog, i say yes.

I have been using Fedora 14, which has Evolution 2.32.1 but have recently also installed openSUSE 11.3, which has Evolution 2.30.1.2. I would like to make openSUSE my primary distribution, and so I would like to restore my Evolution settings from Fedora, but Evolution complains that the backup file is invalid. I have tried copying the folders in the backup to their appropriate locations in openSUSE with no luck. I have also tried manually copying with instructions for older versions of openSUSE, but with no luck.
An obvious guess at what might be the problem seems to be that I am trying to restore settings from a newer version to an older version? An obvious thing to try would be to upgrade to Evolution 2.32, but Evolution has a long list of dependencies so before jumping into that fun I thought I would ask if anyone else has had similar problems and found a straight-forward solution. I still have access to my emails in Fedora so this is not hugely pressing, and if upgrading to 11.4 will do the trick then I can just wait for that.

I moved all my files in my home directory to a new computer. This old machine is Ubuntu 9.10 and the new one is Ubuntu 10.10. These files included my original ".evolution" directory. But on the new computer, when I run Evolution, it seems to ignore or not understand this directory, and wants me to set up all new accounts. There is a lot of email saved locally in that ".evolution" directory I need to keep. How can I get this newer version of Evolution to use those old files?

I have been using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS for several months and recently the system has stopped closing down cleanly. It starts okay and runs just fine, but when I come to closing down it doesn't do anything after I've clicked on the shut down button. The same happens with the restart button. I have been closing the system by pressing the power button on the front of my tower. I have no idea as to why it won't close ... I haven't installed any extra software, so I guess it's a system problem. Closing down by pressing the power button cannot be doing the OS any good, so I could do with a fix ASAP on this one.

I have some screen questions. First, can you give screens names (such as whatever app you're screening), and second, how do you exit from a screen without closing the app (ie exit screen back to the command prompt, do your thing, then screen -r it)?

This is probably a stupid question, but I haven't been able to figure it out on my own.
If I run Amarok and then click on Amarok -> Quit, the main Amarok window disappears but a tray icon remains:
How do I open Amarok again?
Choosing Amarok from the main menu does nothing. Running amarok in the terminal produces:
multi@aux:~$ amarok
Amarok is already running!

I tried Kubuntu and it have a nice function that not closing all programs when shutting down ("not closing" explicitly) . So if I start the Kubuntu the next day, all the program will appear in the same state. in my Ubuntu, when pressing "shut-down", a message box pops asking : "Are you sure you want to close all programs and shut down the computer?" and I press "yes" (cause you are not leaving me any choice! [the other option is "cancel"] ).

I tested 11.04 beta 1 on one of my computers and was happy to see VmWare workstation 7.1.4 to work fine on it. Then I decided to upgrade my most frequently used computer to 11.04 beta 2, but I can't get VMware to work properly. When I click on some of the function button such as start a VM or maybe change a setting VMware just closes. I can't figure it out, I've tried it with Unity, Gnome with effects, Gnome without. Nouveau driver, Distro nVidia driver, downloaded nVidia driver, and VGA driver. It was nothing to do with Video driver, but that is about the only hardware difference with the other machine that works, it has Intel Video.

Long-time Unix/Linux user, just got a new Xubuntu box set up to be a fileserver using SAMBA. I've noticed that every 8 minutes or so, the fileserver will disconnect any user currently accessing any files. My first instinct is to unload the GUI and tackle it from the terminal command line. However, every time I try to close out Xubuntu using "sudo init 1" I get taken to the Xubuntu splash screen and the box will no longer respond to any commands. I can post any relevant information requested about the system, build, and version.

For the past 3 days skype has been giving me problems for some reason. I start it, the sign in screen shows up and like 5 seconds later it closes, I check if the process is still running but it's not so it just shuts down. I've tried uninstalling it from synaptic package manager, then installing it again and it's still doing me this.

I am encountering a Problem with the TeamSpeak server that I host on my Ubuntu Machine. The Problem I'm having is that when I restart the Computer before Stopping the Service from the Terminal, The Server would encounter an error the next time it is started.
I would like to know if there is a File somewhere that is run when the User want to Reboot or Shutdown the PC, or if I can write a script that runs before Shutting down.

I'm trying to add a network printer. I went to Admin > printing > New...It started searching for printers, then brought up a "New Printer" box... So I expand Network Printer, and go to "windows printer via SAMBA"When I hit browse, it shows my workgroup, so I expand WORKGROUP, and it shows the PC thats sharing the printer... however, soon as I expand that PC thats sharing the printer, the WHOLE thing closes out
Printer configuration, new printer, SMB browser, all of it closes as if i killed the process or something... I can even refresh and try expanding workgroup again and it'll close out

Is there a way to identify and close a given instance of an open nautilus window from a command line?
Or can one identify via a command line that a given instance is open?
I'd like to tag one when it is open with a specific title and then if that is already open not open it again all from the command line.
