Ubuntu :: Restoring Evolution From Backup - No Valid File Message

Jul 7, 2011

I've been using 11.04 Unity, & quite like it. I fired up Blender 2.49b the other day (not used it for a long time) & its behaviour was very erratic. Due to this I decided to reinstall 10.10 for the time being, until October or maybe even the 12.04 LTS. I backed everything up & reinstalled 10.10. I then tried to restore my Evolution from the Natty backup file, which simply didn't work. The message was something about it not being a valid file. I'm assuming this is a non backwards compatibility issue.

Any way getting Blender to work or restoring Evolution? With regard to Blender (in Natty); I've not tried proprietary drivers for my GPU yet as the open source defaults have always been fine, so that's an option. It means another reinstall (of Natty), but that really isn't such a big deal at this point. With regard to Evolution (in Maverick); I found a ppa but I'm unsure how to proceed once I've added it. Would I do an apt-get update & an apt-get install evolution?

Ubuntu :: Evolution 2.28 - Archiving And Backup

Jan 31, 2011

I want to create retrievable archives of a my old emails say monthly to avoid the old emails running me out of memory. If I use the 'Backup Settings' procedure as explained in Evolution Help what happens when I wish to consult the /home/dbus/evolution-backup.tar.gz archive file?

1- Will it simply over-write my current Evolution data? [in which case its not what I need]
2- If not, how do I return the archive file to dead storeage and resuscitate my current data?
3- If it will overwrite using the 'Restore Evolution' procedure given in Evolution Help is there a workaround ... perhaps by ...
3a- renaming the archive file,
3b- or 'restoring' it in another version of Evolution,
3c- or archiving CURRENT data as a 2nd backup with a different name [eg: /home/dbus/evolution-backupJan11.tar.gz?] then restoring that?
4- Will I be able to retrieve successive archives if I rename them, say '/home/dbus/evolution-backup.tarDec10.gz' etc once Evolution's saved them?

Alternatively the following came from a dead thread [from commonlyUNIQU3 ] ... is it still valid? does it avoid the problem of potentially running out of memory?
A. Make a subfolder to the "Inbox" under the "On This Computer" tree (I call mine "Archive")
B. Drag and drop the emails you want to archive into this folder.*

This will move the selected emails off of your Exchange server/account and into this folder (and into local storage) - unless you do a copy & paste instead of drag & drop. You may need to have the setting for downloading emails for offline access enabled for this to work as desired. If I recall, the new integrated backup feature creates a compressed (.zip) archive from which you can later restore the email (haven't tried that just yet).

OpenSUSE :: Version Of Evolution - Running The Evolution Mail System Under Fedora - 15 / KDE

Jul 26, 2011

I've been running the Evolution mail system under Fedora-15/KDE for about a month now, and it has some very serious problems. I just noticed that it is available for SUSE, and figured that since KDE is the principal desktop supported by KDE the SUSE version may be fixed. Before I go through the very tedious process of getting the SUSE version to compile on Fedora, I'd like to know whether anyone has seen these problems with the SUSE version of Evolution:It ignores font control from the KDE Settings->Applications Appearance window, both KDE font control and GTK+ font control, also its own internal font control window.

It has trouble sending messages to an SMTP server, sometimes taking a l-o-n-g time, sometimes timing out. This can be temporarily cured by restarting it It crashes when a filter attempts to refile an outgoing message. It often asks if I want to recover messages that have never been lost. It often locks up receiving mail from a remote POP3 server. I can live with these, except for items 1 and 2, since I have workarounds. If you are fairly sure that you have not seen these problems with the SUSE version of Evolution

Fedora :: Error While Fetching Email. Evolution Version: Evolution 2.28.0

Apr 5, 2010

I had configured the evolution to send/recive email. After it had been configured, it could receive emails. Suddendly it can't fetch email anymore. In the inbox of evolution, there were about 200 emails. There are maybe 5K emails in the server, I guessed. I'm not sure whether it's the problem that there's one email in the server too big, so the evolution can not fetch it. The error of evolution is: error while fetching email. Evolution version: Evolution 2.28.0. OS version: Linux xxx2.6.32.9-70.fc12.i686.PAE #1 SMP Wed Mar 3 04:57:21 UTC 2010 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux I'm sure my network is fine, I use pop3 to receive email.

Ubuntu :: Backup Evolution From Command Line?

Mar 11, 2011

Sadly I am unable to login to a particular user via the GUI, but that is another thread [URL].

I know that you can create a single backup file of all your emails and settings when you have access to the GUI in Evolution. Since I am unable to login to gnome (or KDE) but I am able to login to the command line by su to the user I would like to create a that evolution backup file. I will be reinstalling Ubuntu.

Ubuntu :: Evolution 'backup' Skipped All Saved Email

Dec 15, 2010

I recently reinstalled my computer with new hard drives and Ubuntu 10.10 (AMD64). Before the switch I used the 'Backup' function in Evolution to backup all my email and email settings -- I thought! The backup file was big (300 MB) so I didn't double-check how big it should have been.

After the reinstall I restored the backup and Evolution seemed to be working fine, i.e., I could see all the new email in my IMAP mailbox. Also, my local Contacts were all there, as expected. But eventually I tried locating an old email which I had saved to a sub-folder under the 'Local' Inbox and realized that there was nothing there! Fortunately I still had my old hard-drive and so I was able to recover the additional 400 MB of old emails. Shouldn't the 'Backup' function include the entire Evolution profile including any/all 'Local' settings?

OpenSUSE :: Restoring Evolution 2.32.1.2 Settings Into Evolution 2.30

Feb 20, 2011

I have been using Fedora 14, which has Evolution 2.32.1 but have recently also installed openSUSE 11.3, which has Evolution 2.30.1.2. I would like to make openSUSE my primary distribution, and so I would like to restore my Evolution settings from Fedora, but Evolution complains that the backup file is invalid. I have tried copying the folders in the backup to their appropriate locations in openSUSE with no luck. I have also tried manually copying with instructions for older versions of openSUSE, but with no luck.

An obvious guess at what might be the problem seems to be that I am trying to restore settings from a newer version to an older version? An obvious thing to try would be to upgrade to Evolution 2.32, but Evolution has a long list of dependencies so before jumping into that fun I thought I would ask if anyone else has had similar problems and found a straight-forward solution. I still have access to my emails in Fedora so this is not hugely pressing, and if upgrading to 11.4 will do the trick then I can just wait for that.

Software :: Evolution Won't Use 'evolution' Directory

Nov 29, 2010

I moved all my files in my home directory to a new computer. This old machine is Ubuntu 9.10 and the new one is Ubuntu 10.10. These files included my original ".evolution" directory. But on the new computer, when I run Evolution, it seems to ignore or not understand this directory, and wants me to set up all new accounts. There is a lot of email saved locally in that ".evolution" directory I need to keep. How can I get this newer version of Evolution to use those old files?

Because the two positions are separate, I do not want to Import his Evolution over my own - but, I do want to be able to access it from my machine. Can my Evolution refer to the old hard drive (now in a caddy and non-bootable) for the Evolution account data that is there, while still being able to switch back to my own Evolution data on demand. E.G. in Windows the equivalent would be the way that Outlook can refer to different .pst files at loading. Alternatively, can I make the external USB drive (previously a running main HDD) bootable without losing all of the data?

Ubuntu :: Evolution Fails To "Print To File"?

Feb 24, 2010

Up until recently in Evolution email I was able to "Print to File" any email. Now it fails to produce any file with no error message. However if I use "print preview" then print it reports an error that is has no permission to access the directory.

This happens for any directory, including those whcih it used to print to.

The only recent change, apart from accepting recommended updates, is that I removed my gnome keyring password so I didn't have to type a password whenever Evolution started. But after I added a password back in, the problem still occurs.

Ubuntu Networking :: WEP TTLS Evolution ?

Feb 1, 2010

At home I'm using a standard WPA secured Network, and all is running smooth and well, and I use Evolution 95% of the time im online (Gmail IMAP account)...and all goes great.

However, my school runs one of those WEP TTLS secured networks.

And all works great there too, except for one annoying thing:

As I mentioned I used Evolution mainly to organise meetings and send invites. But when I open Evolution it tries to connect to Gmail...and it is almost as if it cant get to the host.

It won't shut down unless I kill the app, thats not what i want to do.

My question is, is this a problem between TTLS and Evolution somehow, or is it IMAP from Gmail and TTLS...and for the one it is, how do I fix it?
