I'm trying to use the screen command to start a split screen by default.
I know once I am an in `screen`, I can type C-a S to get a split screen. But is there a way to specify this as an argument to the `screen` command so it starts automatically with a split screen?
I tried to enable Compiz on my netbook, so I installed ccsm. Then when I enabled visual effects and restarted, my netbooks monitor starts flashing when I boot up. So I restarted in low graphics mode, uninstalled ccsm, and it's still flashing. Is there anything else I need to remove to get my netbooks monitor back to normal?b
View 1 Replies View Relatedwhat it is, is I installed Maverick fresh (not an upgrade) and it now will go to were it says ubuntu, and has the loading dots, and it stays at a black screen after that. The 'thinking' light for my computer is not activationg. it is installed on a 20-30 Gb partition, on a dual boot with windows 7. I had had Lucid installed a while ago, but it was lost when my harddrive was wiped a while back. My specs:

Well my problem is described simple as that Black screen on start up. y laptop became a bloodless zombie after I installed BOCHS, Avast 32 bits (forced architecture) and the one I think may be the problem: Driver Manager or something like that wich is PySDM I think. This one is supose to configure mi Hard disk to automount.

It was running fine with Ubuntu 10.10 but I like to do a clean install of the latest version when it comes out and I am home. I torrent the 11.04 desktop 64 bit releaee and strangely the screen is just black but it appears to load. Then I try to the 64 bit alternate install which appears to work fine. Unfortunately, the screen is black when loading past GRUB and plays the Ubuntu sound. To test if it is loading I type in my password and hit enter and the Ubuntu log in sound plays but still nothing on the screen.
I thought no big deal I will just install 10.04.2 and use the alternate download. I download it on the desktop running Windows 7 and use the USB installer the Ubuntu website recommends. It installs fine but the same problem occurs with a black screen.
At this point I think to reinstall again but this appears at the top of the screen.
SYSLINUX 3.86 20-04-01 EBIOS Copyright (C) 1994-2010 H. Peter Anvin et al
The screen is just stuck there with a blinking cursor and if press any keys it beeps several times.
TL;DR Installed 11.04 then black screen. Installed 10.04.2 then black screen. Install 10.04.02 again and error message.
I have a problem with my ubuntu 11.04 which is the resolution of the screen which is not supported by my monitor, so I can't see anything until the login screen appears. This actually was not a problem until my system stooped booting. Actually I do not know why is that because I can't see anything, it just stooped to view the login screen. For now the only information I can get is that the resolution params are: horizontal freq is 92.9kHz, vertical freq is 58kHz (which are out of my monitor's range). I would like to change this to get some informations from my system what is going on. Do anyone knows how do I change this startup resolution while the only thing I can do is to access the file system through LiveCD?

I can no longer login to Ubuntu 9.10.When I start up my laptop and after the grub, Ubuntu freezes at the brown spotlight wallpaper right after the Ubuntu splash screen.Usually, after the splash screen I have to login with my password but before that comes up Ubuntu freezes.I've updated to Ubuntu 9.10 since it first came out without any issues until now.

I recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my laptop (clean install, not upgrade), and when I turn my computer on, I get a black screen instead of the purple "Ubuntu" screen before my system logs on. When I log off, I get the purple "Ubuntu" screen, but not when I log on.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI simply installed 5 or 6 various packages and shutdown the laptop, later I opened it and turned it on GRUB came up as usual showing the usual options, I selected the option I always pick and Ubuntu came up as usual with the progress bar of 5 or 6 dots that show the typical progress bar but it stays like this forever. I tested it for up to 3 hours it didn't budge.
I tried selecting the recovery option from the GRUB menu and it appears to load normally with a bunch of console output but then halts with the last message displaying:
Code:
cloud-init start-local running Wed, 05 Jan 2011 20:43:44 -0600. up 14.26 seconds
no instance data found in start local init: cloud-init-local main process (357) terminated with status 1
But before the message there was a lot of warnings that appeared to trail off as there were so many, here is an example of one of them as they all appear to be the same just different rule numbers, this is also the last one before the error:

Although I have been using Ubuntu for a while, I am still a beginner. This is the second time that it has happened to me and I am unable to find a possible solution in my books on Linux and Ubuntu.Twice I have downloaded updates from Update Manager which required a reboot. Each time I have rebooted, terminal window has opened. I am unable to get out of terminal to the desktop or to enter any other program ( like office, etc). I know that the graphics are still in place as The Ubuntu 10.10 screen flashes on before the terminal black screen appears.(I am in runlevel 2 )A. How can I get out of terminal and onto desktop?
View 3 Replies View RelatedSo I got Ubuntu installed alongside my Windows, but now when I start I get a message on my monitor saying about input not being support or something; usually happens if the resolution isn't supported. If I hit random buttons eventually Ubuntu will start up, but I don't want to be doing that every time I remember when I had an older version of Ubuntu a screen would appear where I could pick to start either Ubuntu or Windows, so I assume that's what's going wrong.

View 5 Replies View RelatedYesterday, I tried to get two monitors working by editing xorg.conf. When it failed, I tried using my old xorg.conf, but that didn't work either. dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg did not work (it literally did nothing). Uninstalling and re-installing xserver-xorg did not work.So now I have zero working monitors instead of two. Xorg.0.log says something about "Screen was found, but doesn't work with existing setup." Anyway, I am less concern with the specific problem I am having than with the general way to fix problems with X. I read somewhere that dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg doesn't work anymore, but I haven't figured out what I'm supposed to use in place of it when X won't start.

A few weeks ago I installed Ubuntu 10.4 beta on a pc. I upgraded it to 10.4 RC and 10.4 final release. I think it was after upgrading to 10.4RC that I started having a problem during startup. Here is what happens:
I turn the pc on the bootstrap process occurres, then the grub screen comes up I let ubuntu boot. For a few seconds I get a black screen with a blinking cursor. The Ubuntu splash screen flashes on the screen for maybe a second or two. Then I'm dumped to the command prompt on TTY1.
At this point I can log in with a username and password type startx and I'm at the ubuntu desktop. If I log off I'm back at the command prompt on TTY1. If I press alt-ctrl-F7 at the command prompt this is what I see, these are the last four lines of text: init: ureadahead-other main process (742) terminated with status 4

I have been running Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid not on a separate disc partition but installed right on my Windows (7) partition. Everything was working fine until yesterday. I restarted my computer and then the system was scanning the disc then suddenly after the disc check, the computer restarted and when it was supposed to launch Ubuntu, the screen went completely white. I tried restarting again, I manage to get to where I choose to boot with Windows 7 or Ubuntu. I choose Ubuntu and the same happens again: white screen. It doesn't go any further than this and the only thing the computer can do is boot with Windows 7. Has anyone had the same problem? Also, is there a way I can access my files (saved in Ubunutu) from Windows? If I can manage to copy these files then I don't mind reformatting the whole disc.

View 5 Replies View RelatedAs a refuge from CentOS (no way I will use KDE4 or gnome) I ended up with Xubuntu 11.04 x86_64 and I like it a lot.Except for the missing screen at start-up everything went smooth until I tried to install VMware workstation 7.1.4 (I have a full license). If I install with sudo sh VMware_____.bundle the installer makes it through just fine but if I try to start it all I get is a short splash of a screen and it's done. Starting it manually it runs through a bunch of things and shows a lot of gtk warnings until it gets stuck and that's it. No screen at all.
Out of desperation I installed it with sudo su - and then the sh VMware.....bundle. If I then start it still as root (su -, vmware &) it works just fine but it doesn't work as user.I tried a lot of the "fixes" I found on the VMware site and googled but unfortunately no success.

View 8 Replies View RelatedMy recently installed OS, keeps on displaying a GRUB menu instead of the normal screen and has an option of normal start up or ( I forgot what it's called but some sort of .. ) Fixing Option. It has worked before but yesterday the error wouldn't stop coming up after it randomly crashed while the computer was working. I haven't tried it again today, but will do soon. The first option of normal boot up said something like 0x01002 is in use and didn't load.
The second one occasionly came up with an option for normal boot after it had 'Fixed' it. But most times it would come up with some terminal like dialogue, then stop and not load, don't know if it crashed or what ? Hope this is enough information for you, but as I'm only 12, I don't have a clue what to do, except the obvious option of rebooting again and again.
