I tried nomodeset, vga=771, xforcevesa and a couple more and nothing seems to work. I have a livecd I burned a couple months ago. If I delete the quiet splash line at the livecd I get some repeating text too fast to see and after a couple of mins the laptop shuts off by itself. what can I do to get lucid lynx working on this pc?

I tried to watch a flash video on full screen; then the screen went black with some glitches and then my laptop suddenly shut down. I couldn't start opensuse back again, the screen goes black and freezes. I tried restarting in windows, and it freezes too. However, opensuse in failsafe mode works.
After that, i tried reinstalling opensuse. This time, i can start normally, but after a while, the screen shows some glitch (the updater applet looked wrong) and freezes. Windows isn't loading either, but opensuse failsafe mode is still working ok.
I guess it is a hardware problem (since windows also crashes). However, i would like some help to run "diagnostics" to my system.
My graphic card is a nvidia 8400 gs, and i am running opensuse 11.3
I was using the nvidia driver i found in opensuse-community (installed quite a long time ago); however, after i reinstalled, i was using the default driver. It is possible that my kernel was updated a couple of days ago (but i am not really sure of that)
what it is, is I installed Maverick fresh (not an upgrade) and it now will go to were it says ubuntu, and has the loading dots, and it stays at a black screen after that. The 'thinking' light for my computer is not activationg. it is installed on a 20-30 Gb partition, on a dual boot with windows 7. I had had Lucid installed a while ago, but it was lost when my harddrive was wiped a while back. My specs:

Well my problem is described simple as that Black screen on start up. y laptop became a bloodless zombie after I installed BOCHS, Avast 32 bits (forced architecture) and the one I think may be the problem: Driver Manager or something like that wich is PySDM I think. This one is supose to configure mi Hard disk to automount.
View 2 Replies View RelatedTo start this is on my mom's laptop which is a Gateway NV78.
It was running fine with Ubuntu 10.10 but I like to do a clean install of the latest version when it comes out and I am home. I torrent the 11.04 desktop 64 bit releaee and strangely the screen is just black but it appears to load. Then I try to the 64 bit alternate install which appears to work fine. Unfortunately, the screen is black when loading past GRUB and plays the Ubuntu sound. To test if it is loading I type in my password and hit enter and the Ubuntu log in sound plays but still nothing on the screen.
I thought no big deal I will just install 10.04.2 and use the alternate download. I download it on the desktop running Windows 7 and use the USB installer the Ubuntu website recommends. It installs fine but the same problem occurs with a black screen.
At this point I think to reinstall again but this appears at the top of the screen.

The screen is just stuck there with a blinking cursor and if press any keys it beeps several times.
TL;DR Installed 11.04 then black screen. Installed 10.04.2 then black screen. Install 10.04.02 again and error message.
So I got Ubuntu installed alongside my Windows, but now when I start I get a message on my monitor saying about input not being support or something; usually happens if the resolution isn't supported. If I hit random buttons eventually Ubuntu will start up, but I don't want to be doing that every time I remember when I had an older version of Ubuntu a screen would appear where I could pick to start either Ubuntu or Windows, so I assume that's what's going wrong.

If i go tosystem>administration>Additional drivers, the dialog comes back with "No proprietary drivers are used on this system. Ok so now I go to Ubuntu Software center and search nvidia..... I get the option to installl Nvidia binary x.org driver (version 185), I do so
Now in the Additional drivers dialogue it tells me "this driver is active and currently in use". Awsome, Now when I click on Nvidia X Server settings under system>Administration I get the following dialogue."You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the X server."If i do what that last message said, run sudo nvidia-xconfig in the terminal, It gives an error saying the xconfig file is not there, and it will create one. The next time I reboot Ubunut just shows a black dos like screen asking for username and password. If i put it in, it does nothing, I end up having to re-install ubuntu.
I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 on what used to be a windows vista. I bought me a new graphics card today so that I could run dual screen (GeForce210). I saw a guide at [URL] and I followed it.
I typed: sudo apt-get install nvidia-current
then I restarted my computer, once again as instructed I typed:
sudo nvidia-xconfig then logged out as instructed...

It stops on this screen. I do not want to wipe it but I cannot get it started. I do have an external hard drive and at the moment I am using my Ubuntu disc to "try Ubuntu" I was going to try backing up everything I have but it will not let me access root because I am not logged on to that user, is there anything I can do to get pass this? I've called around and no one is willing to work on my computer since it is now running on Ubuntu 10.10
My EVGA 7600GT video card suddenly died. A friend gave me an EVGA GeForce 8400GS to replace. I'm running a homemade AMD Athlon 64 3700 box with 2 GB memory and 2- 250 GB WD hard drives. First drive has Win XP OS and second drive runs Ubuntu 10.04. I was using Ubuntu about 99% of the time before the video failed. After installing new vid card, I deleted old driver in Win and installed new driver off the CD that came with the card. Windows system was then 100% back to normal.
My grub booter is set up to default boot to Ubuntu with Windows the last choice which can be done manually. After installing new Win video driver and confirming it worked, I re-booted the computer and let it go to Ubuntu. The results was the usually flashing cursor for about 10 seconds, but instead of the Ubuntu splash screen popping up, the monitor went black for about a minute and then shut off the same as if I had shut down the computer.
That was over a week ago, Since then I have tried everything I can think of but nothing changes. I have read and tried numerous ideas from other posts on these forums (such as hitting ctrl, alt, +/- to change screen resolution) but I still have a black screen.
I tried booting up from my original install CD which is ver 9.10, not 10.04 (I upgraded to 10.04 by directly downloading online and never made a 10.04 CD). I can get into an Ubuntu desktop with that old CD and I checked to see that it showed the highest resolution for my monitor (a 22" wide flatscreen whose native resolution is high-1920x1280?? don't exactly remember at the moment). I also tried loading the generic Nvidia 185 driver but it didn't seem to take. I downloaded the latest Nvidia driver for Linux onto a thumb drive and tried to install it here, but was refused because the message said it had to go into "root" and I didn't have permission. I don't know how to establish permission when booting from an old install CD. I'm sure I have administration rights under my regular 10.04 installation but can't see it due to the blank screen.
I've tried at boot to go to the recovery mode listed right below the default Ubuntu boot option, but when I do, a whole series of text flashes on the screen and rolls down to the word "done" with a flashing cursor at the very end, The cursor flashes for about 5 seconds and then the screen goes black. I've tried to enter some quick text at the cursor to keep it from going black, but it doesn't stop it. It wants to go black and it does so.
I'm install CentoS 5.3 but I've not a GUI... when I swith , screen is black... maybe problem in Video Card... I'm download this driver, but I don't know how to install ... Driver is NVIDIA-Linux-x86-190.42-pkg1.run - how CentoS 5.3 work in 256 mb card...
View 1 Replies View RelatedA few weeks ago I installed Ubuntu 10.4 beta on a pc. I upgraded it to 10.4 RC and 10.4 final release. I think it was after upgrading to 10.4RC that I started having a problem during startup. Here is what happens:
I turn the pc on the bootstrap process occurres, then the grub screen comes up I let ubuntu boot. For a few seconds I get a black screen with a blinking cursor. The Ubuntu splash screen flashes on the screen for maybe a second or two. Then I'm dumped to the command prompt on TTY1.
At this point I can log in with a username and password type startx and I'm at the ubuntu desktop. If I log off I'm back at the command prompt on TTY1. If I press alt-ctrl-F7 at the command prompt this is what I see, these are the last four lines of text: init: ureadahead-other main process (742) terminated with status 4

View 3 Replies View RelatedAfter having a lot of trouble with vista and no chance of getting Windows 7 anytime soon, I decided to get Ubuntu and use dual booting with vista. I had recently installed it about two days ago and for the most part it worked pretty well. That is until I installed the driver for my video card, an ATI Radeon HD2600 pro, then things went down hill for me. Every time I try and boot Ubuntu it now goes to a black screen after the logo comes up and i am unable to do anything. I have tried to look up some solutions, but I am still relatively new to programing and some of this stuff seems a bit complicated for me. Is there a simple solution to this that does not require a reinstall?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI recently swapped a hard drive from another computer I was using.The previous computer had nVidia video card (i think it was 9500? something like that), and the new computer has an ATI Radeon 4200 HD video card. Now, when I boot it up on my new comp using the same hard drive, I get a black screen and my monitor just switches from digital, analog, hdmi. I'm guessing that the video card drivers are still installed, but I cannot switch back the hard drive since my other comp is far away from where I live. If I boot up with ubuntu CD however, it loads fine.
I have many important files on the previous install though, and I'm not sure how to get to it. I wouldnt mind reinstalling ubuntu as long as I can get those files back.
I installed Slackware 13.1 a little bit ago, played around with it, performed an upgrade with Slackpkg, messed around with some settings, and chose a new theme. I had set the runlevel to 4 and when I rebooted after choosing a new login theme the screen just went black at the point where the login prompt should have appeared. I couldn't even get into the CLI. Using a LiveCD, I set the run level to 3 again and was able to log in, but when I try to start X the screen goes black and freezes again, so I believe my new login theme is the culprit. Is there a way to change to the default login theme from the CLI?
View 14 Replies View RelatedI am running ubuntu 10.4, windows 7, and I had ubuntu 10.10 on a single hard drive. I upgrade the 10.10 system to 11.4 and now my grub menu which is on the 10.4 system shows two windows and two 11.4 installations.
How can I clean this up? Also I have tried to start with the grub 1.99 on the 11.4 system and all I get is a black screen at startup. I am happy with grub on 10.4 except for the extra lines.

I just got done installing Ubuntu on a new harddrive and set it up to dual boot with grub loader. However, when I boot into Ubuntu, the screen goes black. I can however login (blind) by hitting enter and typing password. The login sound goes and it logs in, however, the screen stays black. I am running a NVIDIA Quadro NVS 295 Video Card.

After installation and reboot I get only black screen when X tries to start and keyboard doesn't work however when I press power button then the system shuts down properly after a while. I have noticed this for the first time on Hardy after installing Catalyst 9.9 and since then I have the same problem on Karmic and Catalyst 9.10/9.11 as well. View 7 Replies View RelatedMy computer keeps having some kind of meltdown. i really cant explain it other than the screen will go black, and then it will start flashing like white bars, or different colored bars. this happens at such random times i cant exactly pinpoint what sets it off.
the only thing i may have a clue to is that in my update manager, there is one thing that is a distribution update that i cant check to have it installed or anything like that. its then "Gij" and its description is it is "the gnu java bytecode interpreter" i just dont know if i should just go back to an earlier form of ubuntu because these problems didnt start happening until i upgraded to the new ubuntu
Now that I'm more lucid I can adjust the format a bit. If I try opening the TTY the screen goes completely black after visualizing few artifact on the bottom of the screen.
Pressing Ctrl+Alt+F7 brings me back safely to the GUI
So far I tried to modify the /etc/defaults/grub file to uncomment the grub resolution and the grub_terminal to no avail. Now at least it seams to waste some less time to load the grub (it took something like 15 sec before) but it lost the previous green/torquoise background and now it's white char on black background.
On a side note pressing C on the grub to reach the grub console gave me some answer I don't know how to deal with... I was trying to use vbeinfo but it didn't found the command and so I tried the insmod:

When I go to change the Visual Effects settings from Normal to either of the other 2 choices, the screen goes black and nothing happens. Could this be a driver issue? Should I buy a video card instead of using on-board and if so, which ones work the best with Ubuntu?

It's a HP xw6600 with double processor Intel Xeon 5405 2.00 12M/133 QC and graphic card for dual screen Nvidia Quadro NVS 290 PCle. In my OS library I found version 8 to install. It has been installed successfully! However; I've read about advantages for workstation on version 10. Thus, I've downloaded Fedora ISO ver.10 and I've tried to install it in my WS. Here I found a problem: Just in the moment it try to start anaconda, the screen remain black. After three failed intents, I have tried to upgrade my version through the 'yum':
# yum -y update
# yum install preupgrade
# preupgrade
It ran perfectly till anaconda try to run again. Then, I've tried to upgrade to ver.9 from ver.8 and I getting the same problem. I've downloaded the Live CD and that is blocked as well. Of course, I've installed all drivers of my WS before upgrade but I get the same problem. So... How I can fix this problem?... I really need move to version 10. Ah!...
