Ubuntu :: Start Up Docky - It Blacks Out The Bottom Part Of The Screen
Apr 1, 2011
Every time I start up Docky, it blacks out the bottom part of the screen, and gives me a notice that says, "Docky requires compositing to work properly. enable compositing and restart Docky." How would I do this?

I downloaded some software yesterday from the ubuntu rep. This morning my screen has the bottom part of in black there are the KDE docky ,firefox ,terminal & rhythmbox icons ,so is the taskbar..but the wallpaper is cut up ,4cm off. I have noticed that the splash screens res has changed too. It's sharper (smaller). The browser as a consequence is also half lit & having noscript in the bottom without it being visible is a problem. Why has this happened & how can I fix it. The last working config, well that's somewhere else.

I just added a nice little HDTV as a second display on my laptop, it worked fine but I found that the text was a bit hard to read so I decided to change it, got another one yesterday, just plugged it in and everything was perfect. Today I came back from work, plugged the laptop in the monitor, booted the machine, and got a wrapped display, the bottom part (about 1/4 of teh display) seem to be stuck with the content that was visible when I opened my session, and the top part is shifted up, making it totally useless.I took a picture of the display, you can see it here [URL]... I will try to see what happen if I put back the other display, but I really want to get working with the new one.

When Movie Player is started the screen blacks out for several seconds, returning my screen to normal with no change in resolution. My system makes use of the ATI Radeon X1350 Pro with the X.org opensource "radeon" drivers. Has anyone else experienced this glitch?

So about an hour ago I put my computer on standby. For whatever reason I couldn't bring it back so I restarted it. It works fine except now Ubuntu has pushed my display down. This means that the bottom of my tool-bar on the bottom of the screen is cut off, and there's a black bar on the top. I'm using a T.V. screen so there is no way I can manually adjust it. I also plugged my desktop back into an old monitor and it was off-center downward too.

I have installed UNR 10.10 on an Asus Eee 900. NO matter how I set the power preferences, the screen blacks out after a few minutes of idleness, and to recover I have to enter the password. This is infuriating and there must be some way round it, but I cannot find one.

I was able to boot up the live CD and install the OS to the hard disk. *Single boot. After I rebooted, the system loads up to the Ubuntu splash screen and will "eventually" move along. The problem is that once it moves past the splash screen, it starts blacking out the screen. It looks like the screen turns on for about 10 seconds and then off for another 10 seconds repeatedly. The screen blinks like this indefinitely. This is my first attempt at installing and or using Linux so I am an uber n00b.
** Also, I am able to ctrl + alt + f1 and get to the terminal so i should be able to run any commands without any trouble.

I just recently installed Lenny 5.04 on my computer and when it comes to the desktop the top and bottom bars seem to be set for a lower resolution. They only go about a third of the way across the screen and if set to be at the bottom the bottom bar is only a third of the way down the screen. The logon window fits this format but most other things go full screen (games don't though).
What is it I need to change and as an aside how do I change the screen resolution if I want everything bigger (so I can read it with my old eyes)

In today's updates there was an update for Docky to go from 2.0.5 to 2.0.6. The thing I thought was odd was that the update was only around 600 or 700kb in size where as its normally around ~13mb.
When I restarted the computer docky loaded but the whole system froze and wouldn't respond to either mouse or keyboard so I did a hard restart. Now Docky won't load either on restart or from the program menu but it is present in the System Monitor (see attached image).

When I play some fullscreen games such as Trackballs, the bottom part of the game gets "chopped off". If I choose not to play in fullscreen (via the game options), I can see the whole game.
I'm guessing this could be a bug in the nvidia graphics driver?
I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit with the latest nvidia driver. I know it's a "closed source" driver, but it was the only one I was offered to install.

I certainly do not want to install Elementary OS, and just want a similar interface. I already installed docky, but Unity gets in the way. Is there a way I can disable that? Also, can I hide the docky application icon on Docky? Or is there a better way to do this?

I got macbook pro 5.1 recently upgraded to 11.04, all works out of the box! However when I watch movies or play a game from time to time I observe a horizontal line in the upper part of my screen which I believe is a screen tearing.Depending on a movie player this effect is more or less visible.nvidia propietary driver enabledvsync enabledcompiz settings adjusted (refresh rate ->60, vsync)nvidia-settings -l is loaded with the systemMaybe it's not a huge problem but everything works fine under osx

I am using Xubuntu 10.10 64bit . When I press the quit or logoff buttons on the desktop it takes me to the logon screen and then at the bottom right corner it allows me to shutdown or reboot. I would like to bypass this screen entirely, and just shutdown reboot from the desktop. Only I use this machine at home ,no none else needs to log on. Is there any way to do this?

Using UNR10.04 and have an issue where menu screens are hanging off the bottom of the screen. Happens pretty regularly, but for example, a moment ago, I was trying to switch to Google Public DNS, in the network preferences, have to click apply/ok but cannot do so as the menu box is larger than the screen. Is there a way to scroll down or make the window smaller so that I can click buttons outside standard screen.

I have a problem with in the Gnome Desktop environment. Some parts of my system seem to think my screen is wider than it actually is. To the right if my screen, there is a part of my workspace which I can't see. I can move the mouse pointer there (although I cannot see it then) and I can also drag windows onto this area. If I do that, the window disappears from sight, however, it is visible in the little workspaces of the workspace-switcher-applet in the lower right corner. This applet does display the entire width of the workspace (which is too wide for my screen). If I maximize a window, it does not go onto the invisible part of the workspace.

I installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my laptop Lenovo T410 and I found a strange behaviour: sometime a part of the screen (small rectangle) freezes and there is no way to unfreeze it. The only way is to shutdown. I cannot use it to work Other colleagues of mine that installed the same Ubuntu version on the same laptop do not have any problem.

After seeing this conky profile I decided to try my hand at making something similar, as my conky profile looked pretty unappetising. All my conkyrc file does at the moment, is display an image and I seem to be falling at the first hurdle. I would like the image to be flush to the bottom of the screen however it floats about 100px above the bottom of the screen.Screenshot attached and conkyrc file below. Does anyone know how to fix this?
