Ubuntu :: Screen Sleeps Despite Settings - 9.10

Feb 7, 2010

So I've recently switched over to Ubuntu as my media center OS, and I'm running Hulu Desktop (which works very nicely).

The problem is, the screen keeps sleeping on me after inactivity and it won't come back unless I use the keyboard or mouse (the remote won't wake it). The computer is still running, audio and all - and just a black screen.

I have the screensaver set to never, the power saving settings set as high as they go - and it still does it.

I've searched the forums for a solution but I can't seem to come up with anything; any ideas?

Looks like I found a solution; Caffeine (launchpad.net/caffeine) is a little applet that will disable sleep/screensaver while in certain apps (or for a certain amount of time). I don't know why changing the system preferences wouldn't accomplish this, but Caffeine did the trick anyway (and actually works out better anyway)

Ubuntu :: Sleeps Again After Returning From Sleep

Feb 2, 2010

I configured Dell Latitude D620 to go to sleep mode (suspend to ram) when i close the lid. It suspends ok and then I open the lid. It wakes up ok, but few seconds after goes to sleep again! So I need to press the power button to force it to wake up.

Sleep button works just fine. /etc/acpi/sleep.sh from console too.

/etc/acpi/events/lidbtn

Code:
event=button[ /]lid
action=/etc/acpi/sleep.sh
update:

I noticed that it always goes to sleep again when I wake up laptop by opening the lid. For example if I run /etc/acpi/sleep.sh, pm-suspend or press the sleep button laptop goes to sleep, then i close the lid and when i open it back - the problem occurs.

Ubuntu :: Router Goes Out - Network Card Sleeps

Dec 17, 2010

Running 9.10 on the computer I am having a terrible time with.

Intro

I have a small office of 5 comps. I had a guy come in to change the router to a bigger one, to go from 4 to 8 outlets. I was changing the service, so first we went to the new company's smaller router and then to the bigger one.

Well, my old Dell and another older box never could get reconnected after the guy pulled out the smaller one and put in the bigger one. First migration was fine though.

I believe I have seen this problem before. I have had several instances of weird internet outages involving single (or worse, a pair of) machines that eventually can go back online. There are some serious bugs in NetworkManager I think which are putting these devices to sleep.

Symptoms

Symptoms I have already seen a lot around here. Yes, I have lights where the line goes in. The system will try to get a dhcp lease and then give up, telling me I am disconnected. That's it. I tried to install wicd on the machine that I reinstalled (again to 9.10), but it was the same, no way to get an IP address.

I have nothing in the networkmanager.state file at all. My nm.config.settings has a no-auto-default:00:16:82:XX:XX line.

And of course in frustration I deleted the eth0, so now I had to make a new one, and its not default.

Obligatory Begging

There is no way two machines have the same hardware problem at the same time. Plus, this is the third time in 6 months I have had two machines with connection problems, where we were checking lines against windows machines and wondering about hardware.

I am already resigned to re-installing on the Dell and hoping it goes ok (its really old). And on the other box (a server) I even re-installed multiple times and it still won't work at all, same symptoms. So I am worried at this point that both might be fuXXored by this bug.

General :: USB Hard Drive Sleeps And Disappears In Ubuntu

Jul 22, 2011

I have very small ARM computer with Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty) running as a backup and media server for my house. I have attached a new "WD My Passport" 750GB USB drive to it. The drive is recognized and I can mount it and read/write files fine. After several minutes, the drive goes to sleep, even if I was in the middle of writing a backup to it. I can force it to start again with sdparm, but it needs to not shut itself down while it's being written to in the first place. I have tried this command to disable the standby state but it doesn't work:

root@Plug:~# sdparm --clear STANDBY -6 /dev/sdb
/dev/sdb: WD My Passport 0730 1008
change_mode_page: failed setting page: Power condition

I have also been told to change /sys/block/sdb/device/allow_restart from 0 to 1, but no such file exists and one cannot be written there. The hardware itself is fine, if I plug it into a Windows computer, it will not sleep while in use.

Ubuntu :: Screen Settings Not Saved After Reboot?

Feb 11, 2011

I know this has been covered before but I can't find a resolution to the issue. Kubuntu simply refuses to save the screen settings, and each time I reboot it returns to 1440 x 900. The correct resolution should be 1920 x 1080.

KRandr shows 1440x900 (auto) in its drop down Size field. I've set krandr to load on startup so that I can set the correct resolution but of course this means I have to set the panel size as well. I've only recently installed KUbuntu and it's great except for this issue. Surely there must be a simple fix? I'm not a noobie and have about 4 years experience on Ubuntu / openSuse etc.

Ubuntu :: Screen Resolution Settings For Netbook?

Aug 15, 2011

I've got a Disney edition Asus EeePC with an xp/9.10 nbr dual boot. The 9" screen has a native resolution of 1024x600, but in xp it can expand that to 1024x768- either by scrolling the desktop up and down a bit, or by what they call "LCD Compress" mode, where ever thing gets squished vertically a bit to fit 768pixels of info in 600 pixels of space.

My daughter uses it to play games on webkinz.com, and their games pop up on a 800px high non resizable or scrollable window, so there are controls and junk that fall off the bottom that can't be reached unless I'm put it in one of the 768 pixel modes. That, and with her task bar set to auto hide, she can play games and have a good time. how do I set up Ubuntu 9.10 to do the same thing? Right now, the only screen resolution in Ubuntu is 1024x600.

Ubuntu :: Dim Screen - Cannot Change Brightness Settings On Netbook

Nov 18, 2010

I bought a Asus eeepc a few days ago which I really like, with the exception of one thing - windows 7 starter. I like Windows 7, but starter is just bad. I also really like ubuntu, so I've decided to put it on my netbook. I download the netbook edition from the site, put it on a usb drive, and than tested it out - well, my screen is dim, very dim. Changing the brightness setting on the tool bar up top doesn't change anything, and using the function keys does change it, but still keeps it very dim.

I've tried restarting my computer, same thing, I've tried messing around with settings in the battery options, nothing... I really don't want to install it if its going to be this dark, I can see things, but its not very pleasant to use. I'm starting to consider that its the problem with the file I downloaded. Theres nothing wrong with my netbook, everything worked perfectly fine in Windows 7. I use the full version of ubuntu 10.04 on my other laptop which works perfectly fine, I'm not sure why this version is acting so weird on my netbook.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Changing Screen Resolution To Maximum Settings?

Jan 26, 2010

Just got an HP dv6-2150 laptop. Dual boot with Windows 7 and 9.04 (9.10 will not work but that's a different story). The screen resolution is too low and is set at the highest option available (1024x768 which is a 4:3 aspect ratio). The HP uses the new Intel i3-330m chipset with on-board Intel HD graphics. The system is capable of 1366x768 resolution (16:9) - so how do I get it there? xorg.conf looks real generic - nothing specific to Intel.

Ubuntu Installation :: Display Screen Resolution Settings (Cannot Set To 1200 X 800)

May 4, 2010

I have installed Ubuntu 10.4 on Virtual Box, I have installed it successfully, the only problem is when I check the display settings it only have 2 options : 600 X 400 and 800 X 600 and this makes it difficult to work on Ubuntu as 800 X 600 is half the size of my desktop. How I can increase / configure the display settings so that atleast I can fit ubuntu screen into my screen size.

I did install the addition application, restarted the OS but still I don't see any display resolution 1200 X 800, tried pressing ctrl+D nothing happens, after installing I saw it updated mouse cursor now i don't have to press ctrl key again n again to enter into the ubuntu OS but still struggling with the resolution as it's too small, please guide me (here is the screen shot of my screen after installing the addition app).

I had Ubuntu 10.04 running fine. Then I got curious about NVIDIA XServer.

"ATI Technologies Inc RV380 [Radeon X600 (PCIE)]" - Video Card

I opened it up, clicked a settings change, and said OK.
It said you need to update your blah blah blah.
Then it said blah blah blah doesn't exist.
Then it said it would create it for me.
Then I said REBOOT!

Now I get a black screen of death.

The only way I can get anything to happen on my monitor that comes from this computer is to boot into the Install Disk and say "TRY UBUNTU".
