Every once in a while my laptop screen gets stuck on the lowest brightness setting. I go to the brightness setting, and it tells me it is on the highest setting. When I reset my settings, nothing happens. And I notice this usually happens after I have put the laptop in suspend mode.
View 1 RepliesI bought a Asus eeepc a few days ago which I really like, with the exception of one thing - windows 7 starter. I like Windows 7, but starter is just bad. I also really like ubuntu, so I've decided to put it on my netbook. I download the netbook edition from the site, put it on a usb drive, and than tested it out - well, my screen is dim, very dim. Changing the brightness setting on the tool bar up top doesn't change anything, and using the function keys does change it, but still keeps it very dim.
I've tried restarting my computer, same thing, I've tried messing around with settings in the battery options, nothing... I really don't want to install it if its going to be this dark, I can see things, but its not very pleasant to use. I'm starting to consider that its the problem with the file I downloaded. Theres nothing wrong with my netbook, everything worked perfectly fine in Windows 7. I use the full version of ubuntu 10.04 on my other laptop which works perfectly fine, I'm not sure why this version is acting so weird on my netbook.
I Install Ubuntu 9.10 and I can't control Brightness, show brightness popup (Fn+F5F6) but screen brightness don't work, I install NVIDIA Driver Linux-x86_64 version 190.53, modiffed xorg.conf.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI'd been trying to get into Linux before I bought it so I figured that I would try to get it onto my new Mac so that I could use it wherever I am. I decided to try Debian Lenny 5.0.3 a whirl after reading about all the different distros available. I've successfully installed it and I can get to it with rEFIt, and I have quite a few things working such as the video drivers and wifi. However, I've had trouble getting it to a level where it'd be usable away from home. Here are the main problems I'm worried about:
1) I installed pommed but I still can't use the brightness keys to change the screen brightness. I'm not sure if there's some other workaround for this?
2) I tried some recommended power management packages (gnome-power-manager) but it doesn't seem to be accessible or functional right now. I don't have any way to control it or get to it that is obvious to me. Is an icon or anything supposed to appear on the task bar when you install or what? Getting some sort of power management on here is important because it gets really lousy battery life otherwise.
3) Being a Macbook, there's no right-click button. Multitouch would be really nice (two-finger scrolling!) but I'd be OK with ANY way to right-click with the touchpad. I have a wireless USB keyboard/mouse combo that works at home at least . . . right out of the box too!
4) I've seen some packages called the Mactel PPA, but they are made for Ubuntu. Since Debian and Ubuntu are so similar, is there any way to make those work on Lenny? I think that if I got those to work, I could fix some of the problems above. Or do I have to install Ubuntu?
5) I just noticed that the sound doesn't seem to work yet either.
I just finished installing Slackware64 13.37 on my Sony Vaio PCG-7153L, and I'm having issues controlling the LCD brightness of the laptop. It still has the stock Slack kernel 2.6.37.6 SMP The brightness controls worked on Fedora 12-14, as well as the Ubuntu 10.04 live disc. I checked /proc/acpi/, but there's nothing in there to control brightness. I reloaded the sony_laptop kernel module, and from dmesg I get:

To use games and other intensive applications, but with the switch I completely lost control of the brightness for the monitor. Is their a way to configure that, through the terminal or external application. If not, is there an experimental 3d version of nouveau I could try. Help would be appreciated, everything else works great so far.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have installed Xubuntu 11.04 on a HP Probook 4510S and the FN Keys of brightness only works when I on the login screen (gdm). Until I enter to my desktop the FN Keys stop Working. This is a XFCE Issue? I have another Laptop, a IBM THinkpad X40, with the same Xubuntu 11.04 and the FN Keys works perfect! Even the keyboard light Works! I think this is a ACPI related problem, I google it the problem with out a specific issue like this. The only thing that I can do it is use of xbacklight when I'm on my session.

I got a new Sony F series laptop and struggled thru getting the video card to work, the wireless card to work, and the volume to work on 9.10. The brightness controls have stumped me though. The screen is on full bright and the brightness controls (FN+F5 & FN+F6) make the applet display change but the actual screen brightness does not change. I have also tried the brightness applet in the panel and that also has no effect on actual screen brightness.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am having problems with the brightness control on my sony vaio laptop, at virst when i upgraded the driver for the VGA card the whole screen went blank, I had to port a bin file from windows and write my own EDID file to get it to work (nVidia GT 230M), but I am having problems with the brightness, although ubuntu does read the input from the keys (FN+...), the brightness refuses to change, adding the brightness applet to the taskbar does not work either. I really need to be able to change my brightness because the battery usage is off the charts.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have an Asus P50IJ-X2 and in lucid the backlight cannot be adjusted. The panel app doesnt work, when I click on it and try to adjust the slider it just disappears. When I reopen it the slider is at the top left corner of the screen.
The function keys seem to be detected alright, but when I press them I get the notification that the brightness is going down but nothing happens. Also after the first press the notification gets extremely laggy. If I press the brightness keys again it takes 30 seconds or more for the notification to show up. Also after the first press my volume function keys have the same behaviour in the notification area as the function keys.
Also messing with the controls in the power settings doesn't do anything. The strange thing is all of this worked perfectly in Karmic. The function keys, auto dimming, everything just worked out of the box. I have no idea where to start trouble shooting this so can anyone give me some direction?
My laptop brightness gets set to maximium each boot.
Just wondering if this is the case for other laptop users. I have a Lenovo Thinkpad SL500 (GeForce 9300M GS) and am running Testing.
Ideally I'd like it to remember my last setting (which is usually the lowest). It'd be nice not having to turn it down each time I reboot/power-on.
It actually starts off at a low setting but during the boot process (before gdm and just after the "Waiting for /dev" line I believe) it suddenly gets set to max.
I have an issue with Debian 7.8 (wheezy) on my laptop. I've had to reinstall Debian on my laptop and since then I've had issues getting brightness controls to work properly.
It's a Core i3 370M processor with Ironlake graphics, I've had this issue before with Ubuntu and I sought [URL] ..... I've tried the steps that worked for Ubuntu (thinking they'd be the same as they're both Debian based) and it hasn't worked.
What should I try to get it to work? Since I have updated my grub config (as per the Ubuntu fix), brightness doesn't work at all and my screen now tiles ever so slightly when moving the cursor from side to side. I'll revert those changes if need be or if this issue cannot be resolved.
I've tried to install the Intel graphics drivers from 01.org, however I get an issue with libglib dependencies not being satisfied ( libglib2.0-0(>=2.37.3) ) that how to resolve.
I have acer Aspire 5742 with mint 9 {64/32 bit both} installed.. I cannot adjust brightness of my laptop in any of them.. The shortcut keys are working fine as increasing or decreasing through keys show icon increasing or decreasing brightness but it is not affecting brightness in anyway.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have installed kmilo, modprobed nvram and added line: KERNEL=="nvram", MODE="0666", GROUP="nvram" to 91-permissions.rules. I used command addgroup nvram and add me ( user tomasso ) to nvram group. Kmilo works fine but I am not able to change brightness of my laptop in kpowersave or by using fn key on my laptop keyboard. I am in powerdev group too.

Today I installed debian-8.1.0-amd64 on my older Samsung Laptop (Model r560). The installation without a desktop environment worked fine and the system booted without any problems into the virtual console. There was however one problem: when I was away from keyboard for some time, the screen turned black and when I came back and hit a button to wake the system up, the laptop immediately restarted. Later I installed the gnome desktop environment. This also worked fine.
But whenever I try to change the screen brightness in the gnome-shell, my system immediately restarts and successive attempts to boot debian fail. Some time later and after countless attempts to boot debian, it finally does boot again. By "debian fails to boot" i mean the following: The initial ram disk is loaded and fschk runs. Usually the system suddenly reboots at this point. SOmetimes, however, the video mode changes, the console font is changed and some services are getting started, but then at some point the system also restarts. I don't reach the point where a login prompt appears, or the graphical environment starts up.
Assuming, it has something to do with buggy acpi implementation of my hardware, I tried the following:
I tried to disable acpi completely by using the kernel parameter "acpi=off". This doesn't work and causes the kernel to hang
I tried to start debian without using a GUI using the single parameter. This also didn't work.
acpi_backlight=vendor also did not fix the problem.
I have installed Fedora12 on Dell Inspiron laptop. Here are my key details of my laptop.

I recently had to reinstall Ubuntu on my second Hardrive. (As before I used the Windows installer, and only had 30 GB, when I tried to fix this, I ended up accidentally deleting everything.) Anyway, I started to install, and I selected the option to import documents and settings. Well, now it's stuck at 83% and it says "Importing Documents and settings" It has been like this for about an hour now.
I am importing from WIndows 7 on my first Hard Drive, to my new installation of Ubuntu 10.04 on my second hard drive. Help is much appreciated. I really just want to get back to Ubuntu. Using Windows 7 the past couple of days has been pure hell. I hate my PC freezing every 2 seconds, and hoarding my RAM like candy. Ubuntu for me was pure heaven, and I would like my sanctuary back.
I installed Ubuntu 11.04 today as the main OS on my laptop.I had deleted my XP partition, and repartitioned it according to a guide I had found. (http:url)......Basically it was setup like this: 500mb ext2 primary partition, has the grub folder, I believe this is either the '/' partition, or the '/boot' partition 2gb swap space logical partition
10gb ext4 logical partition -- this is either the '/' or the '/boot', it contains the 'bin,boot,cdrom,dev' etc folders 243gb (the rest of my hard drive, with the exception of a partition that contains documents and files from my XP OS, formatted to NTFS) ext4, this is the one that has all my desktop/documents/etc folders.After Ubuntu was done installing, I had some message pop up about installing an ATI proprietary driver for my ATI graphics card (an ATI Radeon HD 4330, I believe, I may have messed that number up). I installed it and rebooted, no problem.
Next, I had another update window pop up with 198 items checked and ready to download and install. I went through all of this, and rebooted, again, no problem.Next thing I did was install some apps that were essential for me to have to use for my work (an ide, chat programs, etc). No problem with any of that.Last thing to install was the OSE Virtualbox, and then I installed WindowsXP Pro and Windows Vista Business, then installed the guest addition addon for VB. This all worked without any issues whatsoever.
Time goes on, and I notice my computer is heating up much more than (seemingly) normal. I begin to wonder if its my graphics card. So I shut down the computer and let it cool down. Reboot, and no problem, still working fine.Then I opened a couple of apps and tried a simple game (can't remember the name) I believe it was a simple 3d topdown, as I wanted to test my graphics card. This is where things seemed to start to go wrong. My laptop began hanging, not even allowing me to access the terminal via ctrl+alt+f2. The screen flashed and I saw the blue/green/grey fuzz that I get when the graphics card is starting to heat up too much. Then everything hangs and I can't do anything at all, including move the mouse. I did a hard reboot (I believe this is what you call pulling the plug/pressing the power button, correct me if I'm wrong). I then rebooted, saw a chkdisk, then it booted seemingly normal, but it hung right after the purple screen after the grub screen.
This is pretty much where I'm at right now. I strongly suspect the fault is with the ATI drivers, but have been completely unsuccessful in my attempts to fix it. I've googled just about everything I could think of, along with searching these forums. I've tried just about everything listed in the forums, but to no avail.I've tried the commands that are supposed to purge the ati drivers, but all I get are errors that say they can't remove the 'virtual drivers'.
Right now I'm booting off a live cd, so I know the computer still works fine, just not my actual installed OS. I'd really like to get the issue resolved without having to reinstall, as it took quite awhile just to get it usable in the first place, but this has already taken so much time, I may just resort to that if we can't solve it any other way. Got too much work to catch up on as it is.As a re-instated note, perhaps if you have any tips, but not particularly about fixing the OS, my laptop (I'm strongly guessing my graphics card) is heating up much more than normal, compared to that when XP was installed. Is this more than likely just a driver issue, as is the rest of it? Also, I did have Compiz installed, though I didn't choose for it to be installed, I believe it came pre-installed. I've heard it could cause some issues, though I have no idea as to the validity or relation to this particular issue.

I just remembered while searching for a solution, I found a post somewhere that said something about the information not being sent to the monitor from the graphics card properly, thus no desktop. I'm guessing that'd still fall under the driver issues, but again, I'm unsure. I would think that wouldn't be entirely true anyway, since I can still see my mouse fine, just no desktop, only a black screen.
I cannot adjust the screen brightness in the power management menu. I can access the window and move the scroll bar, but there is no change.
I am on v 10.04 32bit , a Benq joybook s35.
It was working just fine on the previous version of ubuntu.
My computer (Samsung R580 N330M)seems doesnot adjust brightness both power manager and configuration file in /proc, I tried NVIDIA setting and it works,but I think it changes the color,not LCD. is it caused by driver problems?

View 14 Replies View RelatedMy laptop with Ubuntu 9.10 just randomly while adjusting the brightness using the shortcut key commands on my laptop the brightness started to glitch between two brightness levels. If I don't use the shortcut keys it doesn't glitch unless I shut the screen or restart the computer. So I've had to put up with this for the past couple months now and I think that it might even drive me to reinstall but then I lose all my data.

And no, not the gnome power manager dimming the screen when idle, I'm talking about it suddenly going from dimmest to brightest when I haven't even touched the screen brightness buttons in the last few minutes.
what package would I file this bug against)? This is Maverick on a thinkpad T60, and I can provide any other information that people find relevant. On what may be a related note, it seems that one push of the screen brightness up or down buttons causes two increments in brightness.
I originally installed Maverick on my Macbook 5.1 using rEFIt to dual boot. For some reason, after installing Compiz my screen brightness functionality stopped working. It was permanently 100%. I thought that upgrading to Natty might work, but no luck. So far I've tried changing the brightness manually in terminal and in power-management, editing the grub file and also reinstalling compiz, all to no avail. Trying to alter brightness using the fn keys displays the brightness panel in the top right, and it decreases in value as it should, but the screen stays bright. The brightness settings work fine when I boot to Mac.
