Ubuntu :: Screen Graphics Scramble, Programs Won't Load Their GUI's?

May 9, 2011

Started with Lucid where my file system would go corrupt every week or so. Now I'm on Natty and it's 10x worse..

What happens:Either full computer lockup; screen is froze but mouse still moves, can not click anything. Keyboard LED's are also frozen. I have to use SysRq+REISUB to reboot at this point.OR: Screen graphics scramble, programs won't load their GUI's but are still functional.

File system sometimes becomes read only and corrupt too when this happens.

Hardware:
Computer Processor: 2x Intel(R) Pentium(R) Dual CPU E2180 @ 2.00GHz
Memory 3086MB: (443MB used)
VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82G33/G31 Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])

Ubuntu :: Logout Causes Screen To Scramble?

Mar 12, 2011

Dell Latitude D610 Laptop on a docking station running Ubuntu 10.04 Have 2 monitors, monitor 1 using DVI, monitor 2 using VGA. Extended desktop working as intended out of the box...was not successful getting the ATI Catalyst Control Center to work, but no big deal. The big deal is, when I log out, my screen on the DVI monitor scrambles, and you cannot see the login prompt at all. I get the little drumbeat SFX, and attempt to press enter and blindly enter password, but no login. The VGA monitor remains blank

I use a program that has 3D graphics everything has a 'laggy' appearance and freezes for short seconds. These programs included any of the games from Ubuntu Software Center, along with other applications such as games ran through Wine(seperate problem).

Things to keep in mind:

-I've downloaded the automatic updates through Ubuntu Software Center.
-I'm fairly new to Ubuntu(still learning).
-Provide as many details in, if, you post a possible solution.
-I'm only using Ubuntu 10.10 as my OS, no dual-boots with Windows or any other OS.

Ubuntu :: Menu Disappears / Can't Load Programs Fan At 100%

Oct 15, 2010

I've just installed Lubuntu 10.10 to an Asus A2400H laptop. It has a Celeron 2.6 Ghz CPU and 512mb RAM. In the past I have installed Ubuntu and more recently Xubuntu 9.10 and 10.04. This time round I wanted to try out Lubuntu to get more speed out of this laptop but it's giving me crazy problems. When I run the Live CD all seems to work well and quick and there are no problems I can see. Then having installed it -- no errors during install -- when it boots up the fan goes at 100%, the only items on the menu are log off and something else of no use, but neither work. I can't load any of the main programs, but I can get to terminal and the update manager works, although it works extremely slowly.

I typed the 'top' command from the terminal and it says CPU usage is only 35% and only half the memory is in use, and no swap file.I have tried a reinstall and it's exactly the same. I've done the 'check disk for errors' and given the CD lens a clean because sometimes this has caused problems in the past, but it doesn't seem to be the case here given there are no errors during install (I watched the whole install... all 50 minutes of it).I have previously istalled LXDE on this laptop side-by-side with Xubuntu and it did have some fan issues and bugs but still worked for the most part, so I would have thought just having the one system would create less conflict.

Ubuntu :: 10.10 Startup Programs / Won't Load Preferences

Mar 16, 2011

I've found mentions of this problem in Lucid Lynx, but this is a recent development for my system, since I've been running Ubuntu since Gutsy Gibbon. On start up my gdm theme/icons appear for a second, but by the time I've entered my keyring password the theme reverts to the system default (what Synaptic package manager looks like). It also does not load my start up programs Gnome-Do and Screenlets. My theme only appears if I go into the Appearances menu, and Gnome-Do only starts if I pick it from the Accessories menu (and I've gone into Gnome-Do's preferences and clicked on "start GNOME-DO at login"). About once in a blue moon it will load everything correctly.

Ubuntu :: Will Not Load After Load - Splash Screen

Jun 30, 2010

I noticed my Firefox loading rather slow (took around 5 - 7 seconds to load and navigate pages, even google, and it would sometimes become unresponsive), I thought it may have been a addon problem, so I opened up a new Firefox profile with no addons but the browser crashed upon loading the certain page I was trying to view, and I figured I'd look into it later and use Chromium for a while (I'll be open, I was trying to watch an pron tube site, and when your, you know, you don't really feel like stopping to go technical and try to fix it or whatever), but Chromium said that the flash player wasn't installed. I thought it was kinda odd, but then again I didn't want to go technical and thought maybe since mozilla firefoxs engine loaded the flash, I'd use Mozilla Seamonkey which uses the same gecko engine. The flash wasn't working either on there.

I tried looking up to see if there was a 64bit deb package for flash, but they didn't have it, and I seen someone mention that doing the 'apt-get upgrade' upgrades it, so I did that, and it also said it installed some extra packages when doing it, but I figured it was just that getlibs grabbing the extra dependencies and went along with installing them (after all there shouldnt be much to lose since its from the repository, right?)

I restarted the computer to give the updates a chance to take effect (it didn't mention to restart, but I thought I'd go ahead and do it anyways to ensure it updated okay).

This is where the booting problem comes in: When my laptop restarted, the loading was going across very slowly (I have ubuntu studio installed through regular ubuntu, so it was showing the text filling up), normally it would just fill a little bit of the first "U" in "Ubuntu Studio" and then be done quickly, but now it goes slowly all the way, and when it fills "Ubuntu Studio", it stills stays there, it doesn't load on.

I pressed the down button to see the terminal and it says this:
Code:

I have no clue what to do now, and I wanted to ask for help before I go trying myself editing the command line boot process.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Safe Graphics Mode Failed To Load

Aug 5, 2010

I made a backup of xorg.conf and added Xinerama and the other configuration items I needed. X failed to load. Then I copied my backup to xorg.conf and...X failed to load. Then I tried booting up in safe graphics made, and X failed to load. I tried dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg, but it did nothing. Literally nothing -- no error, no output, no nothing. Then I saw someone who had suggested to apt-get remove --purge xserver-xorg, then reinstall it, and X failed to load.

I am at a complete loss. I have now read that the dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg is no longer used, that the os is supposed to autodetect everything now, but in that case I don't see how I will ever get dual monitors. In any case, I can live without dual monitors, but I need at least ONE monitor, and I have no idea how to get the configuration working.

Ubuntu :: NVIDIA Kernel Fails To Load, Forced Into Low-graphics Mode?

May 15, 2010

I can run Ubuntu 10.04 just fine as long as I have my hardware drivers disabled, but when I enable my hardware drivers I get an error before the GDM login screen that says something to the effect of it being unable to load the NVIDIA KernelI'm then given the choice of booting into low-graphics mode, configuring xorg for this hardware, troubleshooting, dropping to console, or restarting X.Booting to low-graphics mode does nothing useful, just boots to low gfx mode.Configuring xorg for this hardware does nothing at all - same errors after trying every single option in the configuring xorg sectionTroubleshooting is equally useless to me - I can't copy and paste the very-long error reports, I'm not an xorg pro so editing the xorg conf doesn't help me, and when I tried following the option to export all my config and error logs, it said that it has exported it to $xorg_backup_file - but that's just a variable not a file.. after a reboot I can't find this anywhere.

I've googled this and the only useful info I've found is to run nvidia-xconfig as root, which I've done and it has zero effect. The only temporary solution is to disable the nvidia driver, which lets me boot normally using metacity at full resolution, but has no accelerated 3d or composite overlay so I'm unable to run compiz or have any nifty 3d.Details: Vid card: NVIDIA G96 (according to lspci) Driver: NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (version current) [Recommended] OS: Ubuntu 10.04

Fedora Installation :: Crippling Graphics Error When Trying To Load Live CD

Aug 4, 2010

I'm not entirely new to Linux, but I'm far from a standard user. I decided to give it another try with Fedora on my new Asus G60JX laptop. Specs: Intel Core i5 430m, Nvidia GeForce GTX 360m, Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit.

When I attempt to run the live CD from either a physical CD or a bootable flash drive, it loads as usual. However, once Fedora goes to the desktop, I get this screen:

As you may be able to tell, it's a garbled version of the Windows desktop I had previous to the reboot. Evidently, something in my hardware is not supported. However, I fail to see how I can install drivers when this is literally all I can coax the computer into doing.

Ubuntu :: Will Not Load GUI -- Screen Flashes At Splash Screen

May 21, 2010

Out of nowhere Ubuntu (intrepid, I believe) has stopped loading for me. When it attempts to load gdm the screen starts flashing at the splash screen and then eventually dumps me to the terminal. From there I can login without any problems but can not get the GUI to load.

When I run sudo gdm-binary it does the flashing splash screen again and then spits out the error message: WARNING: Unable to find users: no seat-id found. Then a few warnings about longest graphic displayed 2.5xxx seconds
I tried running sudo dpkg-recondifigure gdm and relaunch gdm as above and it did the same thing.

I was not able to successfully connect to my wireless network through the terminal to try to update in the hopes of that fixing the problem. Perhaps someone can give me instructions on how? (I have tried but can not figure out how to initialize wlan0).

Or, is there something I can do from my installation CD?

Ubuntu Installation :: Black Screen With GMA HD Graphics?

Nov 20, 2010

I'm trying to run 10.10 off a USB. On one computer with a nice discrete AMD graphics card, the thing boots fine. On a Dell Latitude e6510 with Intel HD Graphics (the one that comes with a Core i7) I get to the boot screen, the initial text crawl, and then the screen blanks.

Now, I can hear the standard Ubuntu start up noise about 20 seconds later so I know everything is running, just the video driver is not.

I can not do a CD install or anything off the hard drive, only the USB. I'm wondering if anyone knows some edit you can do at the boot menu (using tab) to revert to some graphics safe mode.
