Apr 9, 2010
I'm running CentOS 5.4 in combination with DirectAdmin, and I'm wondering: Is it safe to remove /media and /opt directory?Because those directories /media and /opt are empty.

When I run yum list installed command the output shows two kernels:
[Code].....
Would it therefore be safe to remove the first kernel in the installed list to save having two kernels being updated everytime I run yum update? Or is the PAE kernel dependant upon the original?

So I upgraded Ubuntu and was greeted by Unity. I was unsure of it at first and figured I would give it a shot. It has failed miserably in almost every way aside from looking nice in some instances. It's slow, clunky, and was a total wreck to my efficient use of the computer. But they can't all be winners I suppose. I can see where it would be useful (since it seems more finger-friendly) on a tablet device, but I'm using a standard notebook, not a tablet.
That being said, I switched back to what is now "Ubuntu (Classic)" and have put things happily back on track. However, since I have no intentions of ever bothering with Unity again, I want to remove it - it's just wasting space. My questions are, would this be safe? Are Unity and Ubuntu entwined to the point where doing so would make future updating/upgrading a problem? If it is a problem for the future, I feel it would be easier to just change distros (Mint, OpenSUSE, or just Kubuntu) - any recommendations?

Would like to use Ubuntu Tweak on 10.10 beta. Is it safe to remove everything that its cleaning section finds? Or do I have to look carefully at what it removes? Can I just let it remove everything it finds and not worry that something I have installed will be affected?

PROBLEM: My computer has an nvidia video card. I'd like to remove the packages that support ati and radeon. When I try to remove xserver-xorg-video-ati or xserver-xorg-video-ati, the package manager wants to remove xserver-xorg-video-all.
QUESTION: Is it safe to remove xserver-xorg-video-all? Obviously, I want to keep support for my nvideo card.

I just installed grub2 on my laptop and everything works fine and boots right. It gave my the option to run
'sudo rm -f /boot/grub/menu.lst*' after the installation because it said it could not determine itself if these files were necessary to keep.
I'm not sure what files they are exactly, or how to find them either, but do people usually delete them after upgrading?

I'm trying to clean up an iTunes-sorted Music directory. For whatever reason, it contains a large number of folders that have album art, but no music. I'm actually more concerned about a safe way to test my removal batch, but I thought I'd paste everything I did in case it's useful to someone. Based on this thread, I came up with the following script:
Code:
#!/bin/bash
find ./*/* -type f -iregex ".*(mp3|m4a)" | sort | while read line ; do
echo "${line%/*}" >> file1
done
sort -u file1 > fileuniq
[Code]...
But I'm scared to just run this on my music folder. Is there any way to run rm in "test mode", so that I would just see verbose output, but it wouldn't actually delete anything? Failing that, does anyone see anything wrong with my plan?

Is there any risk to deleting program entries from gconf-editor? It's very busy with software I'veuninstalled, which makes it fractionally harder to find entries when I want to edit them.

I have just upped from lenny to squeeze. I didn't mean to, really, but the package manager was well into its stride by the time I realised what was happening. Mostly all went well, BUT /usr is now 100% full. I notice that there are duplicate files in /usr/lib, eg Oct 11 22:35 libgcj.so.10.0.0 and Sep 14 2008 libgcj.so.90.0.0 (I assume the latter has been replaced by the former?). Is it safe to remove the "outdated" lib files? Is there an elegant way of doing it?

I am planning to build a server in future. That will be a computer with GNU. It will be a router and file server. It will get the VPN-Internet and share it with all the PCs connected to LAN. There will be Samba for file sharing. And I'm thinking that if I just share some directory on that server with Samba, it will be possible to get access to that dir from VPN. So it's not very safe to do that. Is it possible to prevent access to Samba dir from VPN connection?

I have two questions:How do I remove files from Directory A if their name appears in Directory B?How do I move foo.jpg and bar.jpg from Directory C to Directory D if and only if foo.png and bar.png appear in Directory D?I suspect there's probably a bash one-liner for this, but...I can't come up with it.

Installed Fedora 14 32-bit with gnome on an older laptop for my son (want to start him early learning multiple OS's). the wireless card is not working (don't know why yet) but in the mean time I wanted to just add/remove software right from the installation media (full DVD). However, when I open system -> administration -> add/remove software, nothing is available. Trying to enable any of the sources listed under software sources tries to use the internet, which I don't have up yet and I don't see any option to add a new source... although I don't know why adding software from the install media would not be an available option by default? So how do I add/remove software from the install media using this add/remove software management tool? I don't want to have to browse the dvd directly for packages, I want to browse by the nice categories and have any dependencies taken care of for me... and the searching capability is nice to

I need to install the 180.29 driver since I need OpenGL 3.0 (I'm a developer). I'm using CentOS 5.2 x86_64. I came across this thread, [URL].. and it says it doesn't work in CentOS because of a conflict with synergy. I don't know what synergy is, is it simply something I can remove? I'm not sure if I should expect the same problem as described in that thread with the 64-bit version. Which install procedure should I use to try this driver? If I do try it, I need to know how to revert back should I experience this issue and not be able to get into a graphical environment.

Since RHEL is similar to CentOS posting it here.
Upon booting from DVD, i get the below error: "CentOS CD Not found in any of the media drives. Please insert CentOS CD and press OK."
I have IDE Sony DVD RW AW-G170.
BIOS Setting:
Downloaded the CentOS-5.4-i386-bin-DVD image from centos.org from DVD.torrent using bittorrent file.
When booting from the DVD, it gives me the boot prompt:
Upon pressing enter, the log messages of the boot detect the media drive as: hdc: Sony DVD RW AW-G170 IDE ATAPI CD.
The below steps occur:
1) Select the keyboard type: selected us
2) Select the Language : selected us
3) Select the image:
- Local CDROM
- Hard Drive
- NFS Image
...
...
selected Local CDROM
Then the above error "CentOS CD Not found in any of the media drives. Please insert CentOS CD and press OK."
The booting steps does not ask the for media check step.
The below methods have been tried to solve the problem:
- Burnt the image in another 2 DVDs but the same error "CentOS CD Not found in any of the media drives. Please insert CentOS CD and press OK."
- Upon burning the DVD image , selected the DVD read speed: 8x. Upon burning the DVD selected 18x for burning. and then tried to boot with that DVD
- At the boot prompt entered : linux hdc=cdrom replaced hdc=hdb but the error remains.

I've been trying to install the Fuppes media server onto CentOS and have had a few difficulties. I had to do a build from the source (svn build 578), then configure, make and make install. So far so good.Once I try to run fuppes, I get the error:[ERROR] Failed to bind socket to : 8.15.7.107:0.The documentation I've searched so far suggests that there is a config file that needs to be set with the appropriate ip address, but the file doesn't exist as the program hasn't started up yet!

I currently have an ASUS eebox which is running XBMC Live which includes a stripped down version of Ubuntu. The computer will be used by various people within a teaching environment and I have successfully installed launchers for Openoffice which can be opened within XBMC.
I am trying to the make the experience for the end user as simple as possible as the vast majority will have never used Linux before. I want to get to a point where they can open Openoffice, plug in their USB stick and navigate quickly to their files. At the moment when the program is launched and I try and navigate for a file it automatically starts in the Home Folder of xbmc. So I have navigate up a couple of times, then find the /media directory where the USB stick has been mounted and so on. What I was hoping to do is create a shortcut within the Home Directory which takes you straight to the Media folder where usb is mounted.
I have already attempted and created a folder within the Home directory and called it usbpen.
I have then added the following line into fstab /media /home/xbmc/usbpen none bind 0 0
Now when I reboot the machine and navigate to the home/xbmc/usbpen folder I can see the Drive name of the USB device mounted in /media but I cannot navigate through any of the files, I am greeted with a read error message. So the shortcut is only allowing me to see the device name only.
be aware that due to running XBMC Live I do not have a Windows manager installed and therefore everything must be done through the terminal.

I have udev rules that creates a directory for each usb-media that is plugged into my debian to automount usb-media. This directory where mount-points (the mount-directories) are created is passed through a rdp-connection with rdesktop. On our terminalserver there's a drive Z that shows all mount-points with content of usb-media.When users remove usb-media, udev unmounts usb-media and tries to delete the directory that was used to mount usb-media.If the users hasn't closed explorer showing any subfolder of usb-media, the unmount-command succeeds but the rmdir-command fails because the ressource is "busy or used".My question: how can I force to delete this mountpoint? (rmdir doesn't have force and rm -rf doesn't work)Edit: I should add, that I can't use third-party software or additional packages because the linux-machine is a thin-client with very low disk-space.

I am still a novice with Ubuntu and I am trying to write a shell script which will clean redundant files. I am stuck with one line where I would need a command which will remove all files from directory except some of them. Can anyone please advice how to add such an exception to the rm command? I have searched some bash shell tutorials, however, no joy. Guess I have overlooked something.
