ClamAV tells me that three of my OpenOffice.org Calc spreadsheets may be infected (status "MBL_144360.UNOFFICIAL", if that means anything). This seems not entirely implausible, since yesterday I used a USB stick to transfer files from a Windows system. Anyway, I'd really like to keep these spreadsheets. Can I disinfect them somehow?

After the scan was complete it says that I have 1 infected file on my computer. I COMPLETELY FREAKED OUT! Is there some kind of log that I should read to see where the infected files are? This started happening sometime yesterday afternoon on a server that's been trouble free for years.
My Ubuntu update is scheduled to run every month on the 5th, so this was roughly 10 days after that. So it seems to me it's not update related. The only thing I've done on the server lately is update a spamassassin rule which required an amavis restart. That was done earlier in the week.
I've already reviewed issues at [url] and all the conditions are correct for the more recent How to.
I can also confirm that, in fact, /var/run/clamav/clamd.ctl does not exist.
I have two servers complaining about ClamAV being outdated:

Doing an aptitude update says I don't have to upgrade anything. Why is this? Must ClamAV be updated manually?
I got some documents scanned today and had them put in a USB drive. The shopkeeper informed me that it has a virus, yet he transferred the files onto the USB drive. When I put it into my computer ten minutes later, the drive was not getting mounted. I read up and tried installing usbmount. After installing that, I managed to mount the drive. However, the drive was read-only on Ubuntu. On Windows, I found a virus and tried unsuccessfully to delete it (read-only). I tried again on Ubuntu, but didn't manage to delete the infected file (ReCyCleR/sEtuP.exe). I have now backed up all the files on the disk (except, obviously, the ReCyCleR directory). When I try to format the drive using gParted, I get:

For a while my ISP has been sending me emails regarding an infected computer or computers on my local network. There are 4 computers running linux and 3 running windows on said network (3x ubuntu, gentoo, 2x windows server 2003 and windows 7).Now, I haven't used Windows in oh so many years and am not responsible for those computers on this network. Does it seem like this is a virus on a Windows host or should I research and adjust my iptables settings on the router? The applied anti-virus software (I don't know which one) apparently does not find any infections. On my workstation I'm using spotify and win32 office through wine, both obtained from legal and trusted sources, and would thus not consider my wine environment a threat.
View 4 Replies View RelatedRecently, I've been contacted through AIM by a showgirl who wants me to watch her webcam. I found it very unusual that I was contacted about this, especially through AIM. Now, I don't actively give out my AIM screen name. The only place I am aware of it being posted up is on Facebook, and even I have my privacy on Friends so no one outside my network could see it... and even then my birthday on Facebook is underaged for this scandalous activity.
So I don't believe my screen name was gathered from Facebook in its use in this.Is it possible that I am infected some data mining spyware? How does Ubuntu deal with tracking cookies? I also consider that my screen name was mined from someone else's AIM account by which I was then contacted.
So since i have installed linux, I have been ready about how virus are not nearly as likely to infect linux system as windows, i am running a dual-boot though and import my profile and have a lot of my files from windows system on linux, can they potentially be infected in the windows sense?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI've got problem with Avahi on my laptop. It can see the other machines and services on the LAN but not it's own local services and I have no idea why. The laptop (hostname: forseti) sports Ubuntu 10.10, installed aavahi-daemon, avahi-dnsconfd and libapache2-mod-dnssd. Firewall is disabled. Other hosts on the LAN are: magni (openSuSE 11.4 with lots of services published and visible from forseti) and freya (Ubuntu 10.10 with gnome-user-share up & running). Forseti can see the other hosts and their services but not itself. The other hosts can't see forseti. Checked both with nautilus and CLI's avahi-browse.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI ran grub-customiser to set default kernel, and saw the GFX mode setting, thinking "Hey, my monitor is native at 1440x900! I'll use that!" ...Didn't think about how the GFX card isn't initialized at that point, so my res is limited to 640x480... So the first problem was a system hang at the grub menu, with "Input Not Supported" displayed on the monitor.I changed the GFX mode back, and ran update-grub, and with a grin on my face, I rebooted. The grin went away fast, when I saw that none of the kernels showed in the grub menu, and I have only the two memtest entries. It appears that, while all the files are still intact, grub is not seeing the kernels. I had an idle partition of about 13 GB on hand, so after trying all sorts of things, I did a clean install on the little 13 GB partition. Still no dice, after doing an apt-get purge grub etc etc etc on my main Ubuntu partition, to make sure that the new grub was running. I still have only memtest, even though I can open the /boot directory and see the kernel files. I tried going into the grub command line and starting manually, but tab-complete does not suggest any of the kernel files, and tells me that the files do not exist, if I type in their full names.

But after new year, I came back and found that the password of this account linux has been changed. So I fixed using my rescue disk. But since that day on, it seems that this password changes everyday somehow. Everyday when I'm trying to log into my Ubuntu System using the account linux, it says login failed. However, i can still login using the account ubuntu. I'm really confused. Why is this? I checked the date of expiry. Everything seems to be fine.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI need to write a script that can search up to 3 parameters and find all files containing those words. then display them and the amount of hits it got.if the first parameter exists, then we can assume we are looking for the word supplied.if the second parameter exists, then we are looking for files with both keywords.if third parameter exists test the second parameter for the values ('and', 'or', '-v') and search accordingly. These are the only values accepted as the the second one when 3 parameters are present.
lastly, if there are zero or more than three parameters echo as an error and when 3 parameters have been entered we echo an error when the second parameter is not one of the following: 'and', 'or', '-v'.
Ive installed 10.04 on my laptop and notebook. It works perfectly on laptop. On notebook the problem is it finds no Wireless network and just says disconnected. I have no idea how to connect it, I tried reinstalling Ubuntu but no luck. I tried looking it up on internet but no luck in finding help. its an MSI U130. The wireless is defently turned on.

Most likely, this was the result of bad hardware since none of the community's suggestions for software fixes did anything. I believe this is probably true.Indeed, when I bought a cheap $10 wireless USB dongle, it immediately worked better than all the previous things. It detected networks, displayed network strength and even allowed me to attempt login.
The only problem now seems to be that it cannot login. I've rechecked the password countless times, but it just shows the 'connecting to wireless' animation for a minute or two and then poops out and says, 'disconnected'.I assume if everything is getting me this far, the driver is not the problem with the device. Is this a safe assumption?
I have a large music directory that I'd like to somehow acquire, or generate, a list of each sub-folder within it, and then somehow get the list into a spreadsheet format. Is there a way to do this?

What should I do? How to detect which machine is infected? I'm using hardware firewall. Fortigate... Its hard to configure there nice logs. Any good software. I don't want to switch off network cable from each machine and check.
