Ubuntu :: Syslinux Error: No DEFAULT Or UI Configuration Directive Found

Dec 6, 2010

So I decided to go on and install 10.04 LTS, because it is LTS... I created the live USB as directed on the Ubuntu download page. I download Universal USB Installer and it says USB created successfully. However, when I boot from the USB the error comes up as mentioned in title... The USB has no problems because I installed 10.10 last time from the very same USB. There's nothing wrong with the procedure because I am following the officially suggested method. Also, nothing wrong with partitions because one instance of Ubuntu is installed and was working fine until I tried to install video drivers (long story)...

Ok so I've searched for a solution to this problem everywhere and couldn't seem to find any, so I decided to post here.Recently I came across a new modified version of Ubuntu which was made for pentesters, called "blackbuntu".Now I know everything is the same as linux, except a little tweaked. So, I am trying to setup my bootable USB drive, and get this error (I chose Try an unlisted OS -- Then picked New Syslinux). And I keep getting this error:^

Ubuntu Installation :: Windows XP Won't Load In Dual Boot - Error 17?

Jan 18, 2010

I managed somehow to successfully install a dual boot with Ubuntu 9.02 and Windows XP. Ubuntu was on a PATA drive and the WinXP was on a SATA drive. The SATA drive was configured to boot first. As I was having problems with Ubuntu I booted into WinXP, re-formatted the PATA drive, then restarted the computer and installed Ubuntu 9.10. It all went well.I rebooted the machine and the following message was on the screen:

GRUB Loading stage1.5.GRUB Loading, please wait....Error 17

I rebooted, changed the boot order so that the PATA disk (Ubuntu) started first, then the SATA(WinXP). Ubuntu loaded up the dual boot screen.I chose WINXP, but I was greeted with a black screen.I rebooted again and chose to load Ubuntu, which it did without a hitch.what I should do to restore my access to WinXP? Or should I start again? If so, how?

Ubuntu Installation :: Screen Freezes On USB Load At Syslinux Copyright Message?

Jan 13, 2011

I have used Universal USB Installer to extract the xubuntu 10.10 iso and install onto a flash drive. I would like to try a live version of xubuntu that boots from a flash drive. When attempting to boot from the flash drive, the screen effectively freezes after displaying the syslinux / ebios copyright message, with a flashing cursor.

Does anyone know a possible cause or solution? Information that may be useful: I am using a 4GB flash drive, formatted as FAT32. I formatted once using the Universal USB Installer, but some files were left on the drive, so I have reformatted it using the option provided by the Windows interface, (and reinstalled xubuntu.)

When I opt to install onto USB with a 2GB persistence file using Universal USB Installer, the installation processes hangs with a dialogue saying there are 0 seconds left to copy, until the dialogue is forcefully shut (and installation appears to be successful). When I select no persistence file, the process does not hang. (I am faced with the same aforementioned problem at boot time, regardless.)

I have not checked the md5sum (though I have no reason to suspect it will fail.) I have downloaded a simple programme which checks a single md5sum against a single file, although I am unsure which file I should check against in the case of xubuntu, and if the md5sum.txt file represents a single md5sum.

I am using Windows Vista on an old Toshiba Satellite. I am new to using linux, and am very unfamiliar with the the setup and installation procedure.

Ubuntu :: Removing Grub Residue - Error 22 - Windows Error "can't Load NTLdr"

Aug 23, 2010

I dual booted Ubuntu with Win XP, and decided to upgrade XP to Win7. Thought I knew how to do it, so excuse my dumbness. Here's where I'm at: I booted GParted, and deleted the /, /home and swap partitions, making unallocated space. I expanded Win XP partition and tried to re-boot, expecting only Windows to show. Instead, I got the Error 22 error when Grub was the first thing to load. So, back to GParted, deleted the primary partition, created a new bootable partition, formatted it NTFS, and put the Win7 disk and rebooted. This time I got a Windows error "can't load NTLdr".

Rebooted the computer without the disk, and got the Error 22 again. So it seems (?) that I'm not able to change/remove or otherwise, the Grub boot file. So the drive is currently useless, unless someone can tell me how to get the disk back to a bootable state where I can load Win7, after which I can create Ubuntu as a dual boot again.

Fedora Installation :: F12 LiveCD Does Not Boot - Error "error:[drm:drm_mode_rmfb] *ERROR* Tried To Remove A Fb That We Didn't Own"

Dec 14, 2009

Make: Fujitsu-Siemens
Model: LifeBook P7120

For some reason (hardware - I am guessing) the LiveCD does not boot on some laptops. The LiveCD worked well on my Dell Inspiron 1525 without any problems but my Fujitsu-Siemens refused to boot up. If you are trying to install or use F12 with the LiveCD ISO image burnt onto a CD on a laptop and fails with the following error:[drm:drm_mode_rmfb] *ERROR* tried to remove a fb that we didn't own Boot has failed, sleeping foreverthis workaround may work for you. Sometimes it will come up with another error about 'Root Device Not Found'

The workaround only works on a bootable USB key for some other reason, created with 'live-usb creator' and not a CD nor a LiveCD image on a USB created on a windows machine. I have tried them all.

Ubuntu :: Dual Boot With Win7 - Can't Load - "read Error"

Jun 30, 2011

I have an older pc now dedicated to ubuntu and run 11.04 32-bit no problem, and previous versions as well. I just got new hardware and assembled it and wanted to make it dual boot with win7. Found the information and got it working so I thought. Everything was peaches and cream until the install finished. A long long message appeared with read errors from some drive (i think it was my swap partition but its just a guess), appearing and disappearing to fast to read, so it don't know what it was trying to tell me aside from "read error". After the the message it said remove media and restart now. Which I did, booted to windows, modified the BSD to boot to Ubuntu or windows, Get the grub2 loader and select ubuntu. This is when everything goes awry, I dont get any loading screen just a singular purple screen, if I press any key, it starts to flash, and every subsequent key I press cause it to flash faster.

I can run the livecd (64-bit 11.04) no problems, As well as win7-64 (currently to post this message). But i cant get Ubuntu to load. I deleted and reformatted the partitions I'm using and reinstalled with the same problem.(/boot,swap,/(root) and /home) under windows management they are listed as healthy(ext4 -- except for swap, primary -- except for swap as logical and all set to beginning). So I guess the question is what could be cause this problem? My settings for install, my bios, or something else? My system specs are Asus mobo, amd phenom2 hexcore, 4gigs ram, 2 ati radeon crossfired, a 2 tb hd and a 40 gig ssd.

Ubuntu Installation :: Error 29: Disk Write Error Then Trying Again Windows Seems To Boot But It Takes Much Longer

Aug 17, 2010

i finally decided to updgrade from Hardy Heron to Lucid Lynx. for this i made a backup of my old install, then i couldnt find my Lucid CD so i used a Karmic one to partition my old ext3 to ext4. There were some errors but after trying a few times it worked. Installed Karmic, rebooted (worked fine), downloaded all updates - (did NOT reboot to let updates take effect) and upgraded to Lucid.

Everything went fine so far. Now when i try to boot into Lucid the system hangs, i've also got a windowsXP partition on there so i tried booting that, first grub tells me Error 29: Disk write error then trying again windows seems to boot but it takes much longer than it should and seems to hang.

Then i tried Karmic and Lucid LiveCD (which i found in the meantime) none of the LiveCDs make it to boot after about 20 minutes. (previously they worked fine)looking at the errors it seems to be something about the harddrive. Why the harddrive would stop the LiveCD booting is a mystery to me but the same messages appear when i select Recovery from the Grub menu so i guess the problem is related.

Ubuntu Installation :: Error On Boot "Read Error After Changing Motherboard Battery

Dec 2, 2010

I changed my motherboard battery last night, and now get "Read Error" on booting to Ubuntu, on dual boot system. This is the most frustrating thing in an otherwise great operating system. It is the second time I have encountered this issue (last time was a change of power supply). I fixed it last time after three days of re-loading Grub2 and playing around Grub 2 updates, etc. Fixed it eventually, but as usual, no idea of what eventuality fixed it. I think I found a web page buried deep in the 'net, which talked about device.map. Do you think I can find it again - not yet - day 2 searching for the answer... This is what the grub script tells us:

General :: Broken Dual Boot - Xp / Ub - Error: Error File Not Found - Grub Rescue

May 21, 2011

Ubuntu 9.10 was set up to handle the booting selection - previously I thought it was xp but Ubuntu 9.10 "did" it. The system started out as a xp / ubuntu 9.10 dual boot on a 400gb drive. xp has 210gb, ub has 80 and their is a 100gb shared storage. Xp was installed first and then I followed a guide over at linuxconfig.org to get ub installed so that I could select which OS was wanted at boot. Ubuntu manages the boot up menu (Went back to look at my notes from the original setup) The owner tried to update to ub 11.04 and afterall was said and done the machine now boots to the message

error file not found grub rescue I can't say if 11.04 was properly installed or not. Ask whatever you like and I'll give the best answer I can. I think the xp install is okay but I can't say for certain as I don't know how to boot it outside the bootmanager at startup. Data has been saved so if I have to blow it all away and start over I can but I'm hoping I won't have to.

Software :: Date / Relocation Error / Receive Error During Boot Up

"date: relocation error:/lib/tls/lib pthread.so.0: symbol __resp, version GLIBC_PRIVATE not defined in the file libc.so.6 with link time reference"

This also comes up during the bootup process along with "sleep: relocation error". I have never done I migration like this before and would consider myself a novice to linux. This server runs an old software package and I would prefer not having to totally reload it. The software we run appears to be run fine at first glance but I don't want to roll this out until all errors are resolved..

Ubuntu Installation :: Boot With Usb Containing Syslinux?

Jan 22, 2010

I don't have a cd player in my laptop so live cd is not an option. Both the kernel and initrd are on /dev/sda8/boot but can't tell syslinux to boot them.

Copied the kernel and initrd from sda8 to the usb then edited the syslinux.conf to add the following item: label 4 menu label ^4 : boot ubuntu recover kernel vmlinuz append initrd=initrd ro root=/dev/sda8 single Now working from my ubuntu and trying to install grub again.

Fedora :: 10 Internet - Websites Load Fails And Shows "Page Load Error"

Dec 10, 2009

I reinstalled fedora the other day, and it's been working just fine, apart from the internet. It shows that I have a full connection with the wireless network, but it's really difficult to actually load a page. 80% of the time it just fails and shows "Page Load Error". It's really frustrating because it is connected to the internet. In fact, the icon in the address bar even loads from the site I try to access, but websites just will not load.

I've tested my wireless internet with another laptop which is running vista, and it works perfectly on that. Also, I'm running Fedora 10 on an Acer Extensa laptop.

Ubuntu Installation :: Boot Error "modprobe: FATAL Could Not Load /lib/modules 2.6.35-22 Generic Modules No Such File Or Directory"

Apr 14, 2011

Tonight I installed ubuntu 10.10 (32 bit) on an external usb harddrive with a dvd I burned and I used my older desktop. I disconnected all internal and external drives first so everything had to be put on the usb drive I selected (only option available). I used the option to load extra software, use the entire hard drive, and let the software do it's thing. I basically had no options where to put things and it didn't have much choice.

When I boot the usb drive on my laptop (win 7 64 bit) by telling the bios to boot to it first... I get an error: modprobe: FATAL Could not load /lib/modules 2.6.35-22 generic modules No such file or directory. This message appears twice and then it does boot into ubuntu and seems to work fine. I'm new to this OS so that is an uneducated guess but the things I have done seem to be working. So exactly what is this error referring too? Is there a way to fix the problem or do I just ignore it.
