I am trying to upload a text file containing current playing info from a music player to a ftp server. For the moment I am using Crontab to upload it every minute, but as all songs are not one minute I would like it to run everytime the file is changed instead..

Possible to run an iso file such that it will install into a different partition? I have a dvd iso for BackTrack that I want to install in an old, unfriendly server. Options very limited, so I thought that if a booted a LiveCd, copied the iso to a file on a small hard drive partition, I could somehow run that iso file and install the dvd image to yet a different partition making that partition bootable so that when I yank the LiveCd, the server would boot from the new installation. Two separate hd's would probably be best, here.
I'm trying to run a .jar file from the terminal (so that I can set up a launcher) but I can't seem to get it to work. The file is marked as an executable, and all works fine if right click the file and open with java in gui, but when I enter:
Code: java -jar minecraft.jar ... from the directory the jar is located in, I get:
I amtrying to install a program and at the point when I am required to execute the command "make clean" and then after "make all" , I obtain the following eror message:
ndoheric@nen-laptop:/opt/WAVEFORPGM/distribute$ make clean cd ./MyTime; make clean make[1]: Entering directory `/opt/WAVEFORPGM/distribute/MyTime'
I have a jar file which runs as the server with a GUI in my machine and if that starts up i can control my machine with the client in my android phone through LAN. Manually everything works fine if i login and start the server.
What I want to do
1) The server(jar file) should be started at boot
2) This should be available to all users irrespective of who is logged in and if multiple users are logged in simultaneously.
What I have already tried
1) I have tried to add this to the Startup Applications but it does not work always due to some reason after switching between users but even if it works thats not the solution i need because these settings are for a specific user and works after login
2) I tried adding this to rc.local file, but does not work when i login with any user, not sure why. I also tried putting them into all the runlevels (rc*.d folders), but nothing seems to be working. I am not quite sure if i understand how these methods work but when i did boot the server was not there.
3) Manually if i run the jar and switches the user with the first user still logged in, then the server is as good as not running for the second, but if i try to run the jar again, it fails because there is already a process which is running but for first user. If I switch back to first user i have the server.
The Files
1) I have the jar file to execute in /usr/local/bin/ 2) I have a shell script in /etc/init.d/ which executes the java - jar command 3) I have the links to rc*.d for all runlevels for the above script
Nothing in the above seems to be working. I just need one process running for all the users, but i never could see the server starting on startup. If I manually start the server its only available to the user who started it.
I'm trying to run a .sh file from a PHP script. It needs to run in a screen as well as it runs a java file which needs to keep running until it's killed. The following code works although if I try putting the path to the .sh file in then it doesn't appear to run.
Code: $output = shell_exec('ps aux | grep http'); echo "<pre>$output</pre>";
While trying to run the file in PHP I am getting below error. httpd.conf not found Following directories (and its subdirectories) are accesible via Apache:
I have written a small script from that iam appending the output to a file.If multiple users invoke the same script or if i invoke the same script n number of times (using &), the output file(ZZ/OUT) contains messup information.
I checked the 'Run executable text files when they are opened' option in Nautilus preferences. I have noticed that files such as .sh and .bin launch by simply clicking on then (which is great). However I have also noticed that an ordinary .txt and .html file must not be marked as executable in order to launch it in Gedit and Firefox respectively via clicking. Otherwise you must right click and open with every time. What file types need to have execute permissions? What file types never need to have execute permissions?
While trying to run avi file using totem, I get error. As I tried to "search" as used by totem, I get: $ totem A Walk To Remember.avi ** Message: don't know how to handle video/x-divx, divxversion=(int)3, framerate=(fraction)2997/125, width=(int)640, height=(int)272 ** Message: don't know how to handle audio/mpeg, mpegversion=(int)1, layer=(int)3, rate=(int)48000, channels=(int)2, codec_data=(buffer)010002000000880101000000 ** Message: Error: You do not have a decoder installed to handle this file. I recently got my D-Link DWA-556 pci card working with my new desktop with Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit. Connection speed is good, but local network file transfer speeds are pitiful. I'm trying to copy some files from my laptop(also running 10.04) and I'm getting around 300-500 kb/s, which is actually lower than my typical download speeds. Anyone know what the problem might be? output of iwconfig is this:
I have recently just bought a laptop with window 7 starter in it. I have 2 system at home running ubuntu 10.04 LTS and 11.04. How do I share the files between the window system and ubuntu system?
I trashed my Karmic Ubuntu install and installed Lucid (I had heard that the boot times were much reduced and I didn't see any improvement in my normal upgrade). I reinstalled Drupal but find that my installation of Apache does not run the scripts, but rather passes the php text file to the browser. IIRC when I installed it apt configured Apache correctly without me having to edit .htaccess or /etc/apache2/httpd.conf which makes me think that I am missing a key dependency.
Does anyone know of a check list to which I can refer to make sure that I've installed everything? My installation has Postgres instead of MySQL. Failing which, in the event that my memory is faulty, where can I find which changes need to be applied to the configuration files above?
I just noticed that one of my blade server has such a abnormal running status.Historically, the three values in file-nr denoted the number of allocated file handles, the number of allocated but unused file handles, and the maximum number of file handles. But it's really strange to see low value for the first column.
I am working in HP UNIX. I have one process which is running continuously. There is log file generated for the process. I want to take back up of file without loosing any logs after particular interval of time or say file size increases more that 1GB.
Before installing Centos, I downloaded an image file and burned it to CD using InfraRecorder. It starts to run but does not complete. My machine is a new Intel Q6600 Core 2 Quad CPU with 4G of RAM. It is a 64-bit machine, and I used the 64-bit image. After Centos (which I tried first) failed, I then tried (using the same burning software):
o Slackware o UBuntu o gNewSense o Knoppix o Debian o Fedora o Suse o BSD o Solaris 0 puppy Linux
Most failed similarly to Centos. Knoppix worked fully several times, but I was not enthusiastic about installing it, and eventually (on the 5th iteration), it started to fail in a way similar to Centos, and continues so. Solaris and PuppyLinux worked. Those that failed, failed while attempting to start the 4 CPUs. Solaris and Knoppix (when it worked) succeeded in starting all 4 cpus and I could see the messages.
How to communicate what's happening during a failed boot? Finally, I hit upon the idea of photographing the screen during the failing part of the boot; the file is attached. The photo shows the screen just before it blanks, and the BIOS resets for another try. Please let me know if I can collect any other information. I would like to use Centos as a dual boot on my shiny new machine.
I've had opensuse 11.2 for a long time and I've never seen this nepomuk thing run before. But all of a sudden on startup just now, I got a message that it was running. Why? What is this and should I be worried? Why have I never seen it before?
I need a webserver (LAMP) running inside a virtual machine (#1) running as a service (#2) in headless mode (#3) with part or the whole file system encrypted (#4).The virtual machine will be started with no user intervention and provide access to a web application for users in the host machine. Points #1,#2 and #3 are checked and proved to be working fine with Sun VirtualBox, so my question is for #4:Can I encrypt all of the file system and still access the webserver (using a browser) or will GRUB ask me for a password? If encrypting all of the file system is not an option, can I encrypt only /home and /var/www? Will Apache/PHP be able to use files in /home or /var/www without asking for a password or mounting these partitions manually?
As I understand it creating an image of a Linux system makes an exact copy of the OS and any user files/configurations/programs etc. What i would love to do is create an image of my work PC and install it at home on my desktop. Can someone briefly explain the process of creating and installing images of Linux systems?
Home OS - windows Want - An image file that can be executed in a virtual machine(VMPlayer or VirtualBox) or booted directly on my home PC.
Despite the history file is unique (~/.bash_history) I see that the multiple bash processes run on different windows are not all updating that file. I presume that the bash is not taking into account this possibility (multiple bashes on multiple windows) and writes thus the history file in a simple straightforward way. This would mean that a number of history entries are lost. I've tried to find information but had no luck so far.
I have user A who owns a .jar file I have user B. who needs to run the .jar file I have Java which is owned by root.
I would like to work out whether/how user B can run the .jar file, in Java, with the permissions of user A. As I understand it, a running process in Linux typically takes the permissions of the user who executes it. However, the way I'd like to configure user B, the permissions I want them to have wouldn't be sufficient for the process to successfully run.I know you can also set a process to take the permissions of the owner of that process, but in this case the actual... executing process would be Java, which runs the .jar file, and I def. don't need this, let alone every single instance of Java on my server, to execute with root priviledges. So like I said, basically I am trying to work out how to let user B run this specific process with the process elevated to this set of priviledges which user B otherwise does not have.
I recently started running a Minecraft server for myself and some friends and am running it via Linux. I'd like to set things up so that a friend of mine can, as needed, telnet into the server and restart Minecraft as needed, as well as a couple of other things, without giving this friend the same access rights I've given myself to the same files. The minecraft server process runs in a screen, and I've worked out where screen can be set up so multiple users can get into it. However, if I'm running minecraft under my own user name, then that seems like it will just end up letting my friend, from his account, screen into my own account. SO the brilliant idea I had was, what if I had one user account which only existed to run the server, which both me and my friend could screen into as needed, which wouldn't have any more rights to anything than my friend has with the exception of being able to execute this one .jar in Java.
im using a lease line on real ip for internet connection in my office.i have shared my internet conetion with a squid 2.6 stable6. i m having almost 200 pc in my office.since last few days my squid is creating a problem.as soon as i restart it ,it work fine but after a few minute it becomes extremely slow ..it almost dies.when i go to its cache log i found the error that your cache is running out of file descriptor...once i increased the no of file descrptor from 1024 to 4028 , the problem temporaily sorted out but after a few days same problem is repetaed ....and still the problem exist
