Ubuntu Networking :: Controlling Totem Over TCP/IP / Send Signals To Totem?

Feb 22, 2010

I have a desktop hooked up to a router and plugged into my TV. I like to run Totem and have videos running full screen on my TV. I would like to control that Totem using my laptop (connected to the same router over wifi). How would I go about doing that? I connected to my desktop using SSH and tried to send signals to Totem, but nothing worked. I tried using VNC, and that was ineffective as well.

Ubuntu :: Totem Causes X Server Error?

Oct 28, 2010

I have a dual monitor configuration. Monitor one is the embedded Seiko panel on my laptop (resolution = 1920X1200). Monitor two is an emachines something-or-other (resolution = 1440X900).

I am running 64-bit Ubuntu 10.10 on a Dell XPS M1530.
Graphics card is an NVidia 8600M GT.

When I log in to my account, the first thing that I do is activate the external monitor.

If I try to launch Totem (Movie Player) from the dock, I encounter an X screen error where the output on my laptop's screen reflects that of the external monitor, resolution and all. Because the external monitor is at a lower resolution, this takes up only a portion of the embedded screen; the rest of the space looks like the output has been tiled.

Here is a screenshot:Screenshot.jpg

If I close Totem and reconfigure my monitors (I usually just change the resolution on the embedded screen from Auto to 1920x1200), then I'm back to the proper output.

If I try to launch Totem after I have reconfigured my monitors, I do not encounter the same problem. If I log out and log back in, the problem can be reproduced.

General :: Error Running A .sh Script When Extracted From A Jar File - Nstall.sh: Command Not Found

Jan 4, 2010

I am trying to run a script called install.sh as follows: I get a jar file, and extract it using the command: unzip filename.jar -D path/to/files then I navigate to that directory where I extracted the files, and run the command: sh install.sh (where install.sh is one of the files that has been extracted in that directory using the above unzip command.) running this command gives me an error:'nstall.sh: command not found.' among other errors in the script ( from that portion of the script that should not even be executed, which is really weird). However, instead of unzipping the jar file, if I just copied the same install.sh file to that folder, and ran the 'sh install.sh' command, the script runs fine.

OpenSUSE Install :: Grub Error 18 - Unknown File System - Running From External Hard Drive

Jan 11, 2011

It started when I wanted to dual boot Windows 7 and Opensuse off of my netbook (No DVD/CD drive) I tried install suse from an external hard drive and I botched it. I ended up erasing EVERYTHING off of my internal netbook hard drive. Windows and all.

Well, I had a couple of other computers so I studied up and eventually successfully installed OpenSUSE 11.2 on my external hard drive (11.3 being the one that I accidentally erased everything with, so kinda scared of it) and now I want to install openSUSE 11.2 on my internal netbook hard drive.

I can not use disks

I can not use a flash drive (For some reason, even if I make it bootable, it will not load up, this could be because it's actually a 8GB microSD card that is placed in a USB card reader.)

I can not use an external hard drive because that's what I'm running suse off of.

I've tried reading up on how to install suse on another drive off of the hard drive and I've gotten as far as whenever I boot up the netbook with the suse external hard drive connected it will ask to boot into OpenSUSE, the Fail Safe, or to install OpenSuse. When I select to install it it gives me the Error 18 Unknown File system.

I've tried formatting the internal hard drive twice. One as NTFS and again as EXT4. Neither seems to effect it other than when it's ext4 I can open it and it contains a Lost and Found folder.

When I interrupt the boot sequence by pressing c and going to the terminal and I use the root (hd +TAB command it tells me I have a hd0 and a hd1. The hd1 only has 1 partition which is ext4, which I'm assuming hd1 is the internal hard drive (I'm not sure how to check) and the hd0 is the external hard drive, which has three partitions. One with an unknown file system and two with ext4. When I try to enter the set up from the terminal it gives me the same error for any thing I put it (e.g. root (hd0,0) gives the same error as root (hd0,1), or root (hd0,2) and root (hd1,0)

Something like it cannot locate these two files I'm assuming it needs to boot. If anyone finds this relevant I'll retry it and post the files its missing.

I've been searching for awhile and can't find any threads that can solve my problem. From other threads, however, I have noticed that I should probably include my menu.lst, listed below

Code:

I have also ran the boot info script and received the RESULTS.txt file it generates. Listed below

CentOS 5 :: Play A Video .wmv File With Totem?

May 18, 2011

I am trying to watch a video file on a Centos 5.6 Linux. The file does not open. It says "Totem could not play 'file:///root/Desktop/LinuxCBT/Disk1/video01/video01.wmv'. A Advanced Streaming Format (ASF) demuxer plugin is required to play this stream, but not installed." I thought maybe Totem is not capable to play this so i went ahead and installed mplayer on the system (yum install mplayer mplayer-skins mplayer-fonts. I also downloaded this all-20110131.tar.bz2 from this site [URL]. I created a folder called codecs in /usr/local/lib/codecs. I uncompressed the content of all-20110131.tar.bz2 and put them in the codecs folder. I went to folder /usr/local/lib/codecs and did chmod 755 *. I can now hear the sound but no video. when I write gmplayer -ov x11 at the terminal command prompt the mplayer opens, when I open the video file, I can hear the sound but no video. Basically my question is how can I see a video file on Linux? Have I missed something? Did I download wrong files? If I revert and try to open this with Totem, where do I get the necessary plugins for Totem?

Here is the output;

[root@localhost codecs]# gmplayer -vo x11
MPlayer SVN-r31628-4.1.2 (C) 2000-2010 MPlayer Team
mplayer: could not connect to socket
mplayer: No such file or directory

Debian Multimedia :: File Association For AVI Does Always Open Totem

Nov 13, 2010

Since I installed my new debian squeeze system with gnome 2.30.2 I got problems with totem and totem-xine application.

Problem 1: The file asociation for .avi does always open totem! I changed the .avi file asociation unter -> preferences -> "preferred applications" for example to vlc... but no chance it always open the totem player. I looked also in the gnome configuration tool (gconf) and there is the file asociaton set on vlc, but he still opens totem.

Problem 2: All .avi files with video content I cannot see the video and I hear only the audio stream. If I open the video I got a popup with the message that the codec is not installed, then I click on search codecs and totem search for it and does not found anything. I have the codec installed because I see it in avidemux...
- If I install only totem I install also all gstreamer packages ...
- If I install totem-xine I install all xine plugins packackages etc ...
- If I use vlc or mplayer all works fine ...
- If I start totem over a console shell and I open the video, I get no error message in the shell.

General :: Totem Won't Play Common Video Formats - An Error Occurred

Dec 13, 2009

Debian Lenny Gnome
Intel Celeron, 1100MHz, 512k

Earlier today I downloaded a video of a Mozilla Project preview, in MP4. Of course, it won't play. All I get is the audio, and this error:

Quote:

"An error occurred. The playback of this movie requires a H.264 decoder plugin which is not installed."

I put in some time, researching this issue, trying to figure it all out. I guess I'm looking in the wrong places. Is this a proprietary format issue? Also, when I was overdosing on XP, my media drug of choice was Klite mega codec pack (from codecs.com). It literally plays every media format, audio and video. In addition to fixing the above issue, can somebody guide me to an equivalent player with codecs for [insert any media type here]? I have several Terrabytes of various video and audio files, and prefer to not convert them all.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: 82845G Video - Totem Received X Windows System Error

May 13, 2010

My parents have a 8 yr old computer, and they have been running linux for the last 2 years- our graphics card has been a nightmare. It has not worked right....since we first installed 7.10. In 9.04 it could still halfway play DVD's & videos (just barely). No longer in 10.04- Mplayer, totem, xine & VLC die when you try to play a video- any video.

And here's what I get(in terminal):
The program 'totem' received an X Window System error. This probably reflects a bug in the program. The error was 'BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)'. (Details: serial 89 error_code 11 request_code 132 minor_code 19). (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously; that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it. To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

Software :: Totem Won't Play Ripped .wavs - GStreamer Encountered A General Stream Error

Apr 20, 2010

Hello. I use dvd::rip 0.98.10 to create .wav sound files from DVDs and then play them in Totem Movie Player 2.28.2 (using GStreamer 0.10.25) mainly because I like the visualizations. It always used to work, but a recent batch will not play. I get: GStreamer encountered a general stream error. I probably used a more recent version of dvd::rip for the ones which don't play. Both MPlayer and VLC Media player plays them without a problem and older rips play fine in Totem too. The Audio/Video properties of a 'faulty' file (as shown in Nautilus) are greyed out for codec, channels etc., whereas a 'good' file shows Audio properties as Uncompressed 16-bit PCM audio etc., but running soxi on a good or bad file gives the same (good) results. I'd like to get this working, without doing anything to the .wavs preferably, so I guess I need to do something to Gstreamer, but I'm really not sure how to proceed. I'm using Linux Mint 8 64bit (rt kernel) and very nice it is too.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Totem Won't Play Back Video/ts File From DLNA Server

Jul 21, 2011

I'm having trouble playing back videos from a DLNA device in Ubuntu 11.04, and I'm not sure where the problem lies.

Using the software manager I've installed the extra plugins package for Totem, and enabled the Coherence DLNA/UPNP plugin. I can see the device (Humax Freeview HD recorder) in the MediaServers list, and can browse through the programmes I've recorded on it. However, trying to play any of the has no effect, the main part of the window still shows the "clapperboard" graphic.

I noticed that the "recent files" filenames that were appearing on the Movie menu didn't match the ones that were listed in the sidebar - they're of the form e.g. 313.TS rather than the original descriptive name with a .ts extension. Running Totem from a shell prompt, I can see the following console output: request to play: Man on Earth_20110622_0508.ts 013311314 http://192.168.254.1:9000/web/media/313.TS I tried entering that URL into Firefox, and it started downloading okay; according to the LiveHTTPHeaders addon the response headers are

HTTP/1.1 200 OK
Transfer-Encoding: chunked
Server: HUMAX / MicroMediaServer
Accept-Range: bytes
Content-Type: video/ts
Content-Length: 1799258112
Pragma: no-cache
Cache-Control: no-cache

Why can't Totem play the file? Some other codec needed for video/ts files that I've not got installed? (it hasn't prompted me to install any extra packages) Does it just not like the fact the file extension is upper case? Or something else entirely?

On a separate machine, also running Ubuntu 11.04, I installed the VideoLan client; VLC can browse to the files and play them without any problem. So why can't Totem?
