May 17, 2011First thing I will say is I am new this site and computers in general. I have pc and am running back track 4. Today the computer shut off, maybe an over heat. I restarted it and it turned off again even before the reboot finished. I put an additional cooling fan in front of the air intake and the computer is staying on but now will not open the emails in the my hot mail account. It seems to open the account, I can see what is in my in box just can not open them. Moving the curser over the unopened email usually made what is in task bar at the bottom of the page change. As of now it continues to say "Done" in stead of showing a task. Moving the curser over other things on the same page will make the task bar say "javascript" only.

Oct 12, 2010I have been running 10.4 with no problems for some time now. Today when I booted up it started checking the drive for errors, and I just left it to do its thing. I came back to this warning screen: Ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode.Your screen, graphics card, and input device settings could not be detected correctly.
I've tried all of these with no luck. When I select to run to low graphics mode, it says "Stand by one minute while the display restarts...OK".I select OK and then it gets stuck checking for battery state.I try to reconfigure the graphics, and nothing happens when I select any of the options on the next screen.

May 10, 2010Sometimes at startup I get this message "Checking disk 1 of 1". Does that mean it's checking all partitions on the hd? After a bad shutdown there is no prompt for fsck to run and the system just boots up. In fstab I have both options set to "1" for the partition Ubuntu is on, all others set to "0". Any ideas on both?

However after running these instructions and rebooting my laptop I lost the GUI, and do not know how to get it back.
If it helps the loader screen with the 4 dots has gone slightly skewed, and I've downloaded the most recent update changes.
I can get GUI through recovery mode and running it in failsafex, but I don't think this is a good solution.

Feb 6, 2011 I could not get the hardware to work with Lenny's ancient drivers, so I gave up and decided to upgrade to Squeeze.Well, the hardware works (except sound), but KDE4 is a such a disaster that I want to run not walk! all the way back to Lenny. I'm stunned that after four years of active development, this desktop still doesn't have something as basic as keyboard shortcuts or the ability to place icons where YOU want them.
The widgets frustrate me to no end. The new K menu is impossible to navigate. I'd rather hang myself than use Dolphin as a file manager. KDE4 gives me more notifications than MS Windows' crapware. And it's UGLY !!! The "Oxygen" theme makes me want to tear my eyeballs out.

May 29, 2010I upgraded to F13 this week. And autologin just sits with autologin present, but I have to click the autologin (rather than a user name) and then click again to actually login. That's not so "auto" anymore if I can't push the power button and come back in x minutes with everything and running.
I had this in my /etc/gdm/custom.conf
TimedLoginEnable=true
TimedLogin=marty
TimedLoginDelay=8
What changed and what do I need to do now to get autologin to get off it's ass and log me in?

Feb 26, 2010I chose Mint 8 Fluxbox and have the iso. I cannot figure out how to check the iso for errors and the MD5 signature.I'm using Windohs XP so I tried to install MD5sum.exe. When I double click on it to run it all it does is flash and then nothing.When I type in the commands it says it can't find it or it can't read it or something.I may be typing the commands incorrectly. I'm just not understanding.I need to check the iso for errors but can't understand how to check it.
