I have a weird problem. When I restart/reboot, the computer restarts (I see the BIOS, Grub, etc., sequences) and goes right back into my desktop session - no login required. This is not the behavior I want.How can I make it reboot to the login screen?I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick

View 9 Replies View RelatedAs the title suggests, I have to restart alsa everytime I restart the computer. Obviously that's pretty annoying.
So once restart I normally do:

It will then give me a few warnings (see screenshot 2) and then unload and reload all the drivers and everything works fine.
I'm hosting a server with Ubuntu 10.04. I've stumbled upon a strange problem.The server seems to refuse any login attempts, either with SSH or via a TTY after a reboot. After a couple of minutes (about 10 minutes or so) I able to login. The memory usage isn't high at login nor the system load. The auth.log doesn't show any login attempt before.problem? Or does anybody have a suggestion I could try to fix this?

Any time i try to start my computer from a cold state (off for 1+ hours), the first time i start it, it hangs and requires a SYSREQ reboot to restart it. When it hangs, all the window decorations disappear and the background vanishes. The main menu opens, but click on things does nothing. clicking shutdown only brings up the normal shutdown window with the text replaced with squares.
Thought it was my hdd (i/o errors and for some reason the HDD remounts r/o at this point), but e2fsck shows no issue.
Thought it may be an IRQ conflict, so i enabled MSI on all my PCI Devices.
Thought it was the 'green' aspect of my WD Drive, so i set the spindown time to 5 hours using hdparm config file. startup messages printed to screen confirm it is working.
Also, due to the numerous hard resets, the system is detecting a 'previous i/o error to the superblock'. Should recovering the SB from a backup be beneficial?
I have a little problem when I restart my computer, the keyboard layout restart and get back to the default USA keyboard. Even if I delete it it's still back after the reboot. Come across with a situation where all methods of shutdown result in a restart/reboot? I've tried commands:
- shutdown
- halt
- poweroff
.. with various parameters, nothing works. The laptop seems to power off, but after a sec it restarts/reboots. I've Googled high and low, but there's very little on this topic. Maybe it is specific to the current kernel in Wheezy? I'm not suspecting a harware failure, since this was not happening with Windows installed.
This happens on me with Wheezy on a HP Elitebook 8530w.
I had been manually starting my wireless network with "sudo iwconfig wlan0 essid "my wireless router id". The network would start and work flawlessly for weeks at a time. I can't ask my wife to find the essid in the terminal and then start wireless manually when I'm not here. She hates and fears the terminal. So I downloaded gnome network manager for a point and click interface on gnome panel.The network would start fine but shut down after anywhere from one to six hours. It would then refuse to restart manually or otherwise. I completely uninstalled network manager and tried wicd instead. The same basic problem is happening. This is for file sharing via nfs. The OS is ubuntu 9.10. My wife's computer sharing the internet using a proxy to my computer. File sharing via nfs and a wireless card. Also running ubuntu 9.10. This same basic system worked flawlessly under Ubuntu Hardy.My desktop was updated recently with new hardware which created the need to move to Ubuntu Karmic. Some hardware was too new for hardy to deal with.
I am having slight issue with setting up file sharing. I have a windows 7 pc and hp proliant microserver running. I have a raid array which I am using as a share for storing music, pictures etc. When I reboot the debian server I can't connect to the server from the windows 7 PC (I have mapped a network drive) until I go on to the server and restart samba with /etc/init.d/samba restart - then everything works fine. I can ping the server with both ip and hostname but the network drive does not connect - this is straight after a reboot. Is the /etc/init.d/samba restart doing something differently to when the server boots? I have read several posts relating to printer sharing issues which point to samba not starting before cups so I am wondering if samba is starting before some of the relevant networking services.

Using the suggest NISPOM Red Hat documented settings (located on the system; copy - paste) I have managed to audit failed file open accesses however, this setting only retained if I enter it at the command line (/sbin/auditctl -a ). If I reboot the system or restart the service all my -a (not -w) located in the /etc/audit/audit.rules are not retained.
View 6 Replies View RelatedWhen I set up Twin View in the nVidia config tool (as either a regular user or as root), it only lasts until I log out and log back in (i.e. restart x) or until I restart the machine. In either case once I get to the log in splash screen again, it is only operating on one monitor, and when I log in I have to reconfigure in order to get Twin View back. How can I get the configuration to stay?

I just installed opensuse 11.2 on an AMD 64 bit 3800. It has an nVidia GeForce 7600 GS card. I installed the nVidia driver no problem and can access the nVidia config app as a regular user or as root. Both access via KDE run level 5. That is, in a GUI desktop environment. I set up Twin View fine (it is kind of clunky process, but it does recognize my monitor resolutions fine) and click apply and I get the twin view I want. I clicked on save x config but all it does is bring up a file save dialog with a 'browse' button. Isn't this supposed to automatically know where the X config file is and update it? If it isn't, what file am I supposed to look for to save over? I looked in /etc/X11 and only found the following files:
./rstart/config
./xdm/xdm-config
./xdm/SuSEconfig.xdm
./fs/config
./proxymngr/pmconfig
I have a 10x2tb disk array that i'm trying to build into a single software raid 5 i have tried this 2 times now the first it made it to 58.7% and the machine locked up and the array would not restart after a reboot. On my 2nd try all was looking good until about 50% i noticed that the speed dropped in 1/2 and that ksoftirqd/2 is taking up a lot of cpu (about 90%) the md0_resync and md0_raid5 are also taking 60-90% when the build started they took 7%. when i do a dmesg i see a lot of the message compute_blocknr: map not correct.
For a little info on the physical setup this is running on an Atom 510 with 2GB of mem the drives are connected to an addonics 4-Port RAID 5 / JBOD SATA II PCI Controller using the sil3124 chipset. I'm using 2 addonics 5X1 SATA Port Multiplier connected to the controller to get the 10 drives attached. All drive show up and don't seem to have any issues. I'm running a fully updated as of 3/20/10 version of centos 5.4
I will let this continue to run over night but i expect it to be locked up by morning if it follows what the last attempt did.
I am using windows since I first get my pc but itz day-2-day demands and vulnerabilities make to turn to linux but for some other things I do need window yet last time kubuntu was on my machine along with window 7 (through wubi) but then I uninstall that kubuntu, coz I want to use ubunto. I've got my ubuntu 10.10 cd, so I just sat infront of my pc, inserted the disc and it was a happy installation as it usually does with wubi but when I restart my pc and go for ubuntu OS , there show up a kubuntu screen, which has a title like ubuntu login and there in username field, that's not my username dat I've choose for my ubuntu but it is my pc-name from win7. Well I try to log-in with the user I'd made during installation but it didnot let me logged-in I try again n again even through console but no hope. Then I go back to win and uninstall wubi and get install again ubuntu but nothing different was there to meet me. I have a core 2 Quad Q6600 2.40 Ghz intel processor with 64-bit win 7 ultimate. I am installing 32 bit ver of ubuntu 10.10...!

Note: I CAN log in with Failsafe Gnome.
How do I enable auto login for my linux servers? I just don't want to have to login everytime I start them up or restart them. As they are test servers this happens alot...
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm running Ubuntu 10.04 (and, on another server, 10.10) and can't seem to figure out how to remove the Shutdown and Restart options from the menu on the bottom right of the login screen.
I've tried
Code: gksudo -u gdm dbus-launch gconf-editor and checking the /apps/gdm/simple-greeter/disable_restart_buttons, but it doesn't do anything even after a reboot. I've also tried the above command as root (without the "-u gdm").
I have also tried adding the following lines to /etc/gdm/custom.conf:
Code: RebootCommand= ShutdownCommand= These seem to have no effect either. Is this a Gnome bug, or am I doing something wrong?
I have Ubuntu 10.10 Gnome. My computer automatically boots up at a particular time of day. But it stops at the login window.
1) How do I let it automatically login? I have set passwordless login.So when I manually hit my login username, it logs in without needing me input password. But it gives a pop-up window asking for keyring password.
2) How to get rid of it?
I use firefox3.6.x, and i play online video (sockwave flash) often, but while opening the page (often has swf), the whole X restart, and back to login window of gdm. The problem not accured everytime i open the page, but very often. I met this problem both in ubuntu 9.10 and 10.04, and also lubuntu 10.04. So, i fall back to use firefox 3.5.9, and evrything seems fine.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm having a minor inconvenient issue with Suse 11.2/KDE4.3.From a cold boot, and then the first login, the desktop and WM [Compiz-Emerald] loads ok, but the plasmoids/icons are not 'clickable', although I can use keyboard, Command Line and 'right click' menus ok.If I restart X, then log in again, everything is ok, and stays ok until the next cold boot.It's as if the plasma desktop is masked [if that makes sense?], but only on the first login, as if there is a boot sequence issue or something.

View 6 Replies View RelatedUbuntu boots normally, and the login screen appears. When I press the 'g'-keybutton (the first letter op my password), the system complete reboots. Pressing the 'q' does not cause a reboot. Filling out my password using the onscreen keyboard goes OK. After logging in (using the onscreen keyboard method), I can just press the G without problems, and the system is stable.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a workstation with Fedora 13. This workstation is used for very long remote processes. Recently it has been shutdown accidentally by a user and has caused the loss of some of these processes. As such, for precautionary reasons, I have decided to remove these options from all our workstations so that only the super user can initiate reboots or shutdowns.
In previous versions I was able to do this by using gdmsetup and unchecking the Show Action Menu option. This also added the SystemMenu=false flag under [greeter] in the /etc/gdm/custom.conf file. This was under RedHat EL5. However in Fedora 13 neither of these methods work. Gdmsetup no longer exists and adding that flag to the custom.conf file does not work. I rebooted after editting the file and the shutdown option still appears at login.
I just recently upgraded my computer from fedora 11 => 12.After moving /home to a separate partition the installation was very simpel.I only had to reconnect my windows system.BUT a strange problem has started to appear.
1) Booting to grub is no problem at all ( I have configured grub to be able to select windows if I want)
2) I always see the grub count down on my screen.
3) then there is a lot of discaccesses but the screen with the fedora symbol is not seen and then my monitor goes to sleep.
4) I usually(always) have to turn my computer off and try again at least three times before the screen with the fedora-sign is seen.
5) If the fedora-sign lights up I have no problem with login and use of the computer.
There seems to be a very unstable situation between grub and XwindowsHas anyone a solution or at least a explanation?
I'm running F13 with KDE 4.4.4 on my desktop PC. A few months ago I had occasion to run Kalarm (invoked via "Kickoff" app launcher). Ever since that time, the Kalarm icon appears in my KDE "system tray" after I login. I power down my PC when I'm finished using it for the day.In an effort to get rid of the Kalarm icon, I changed my KDE "session manager" (System settings -> Advanced -> Session Manager) settings to: "on login: start with an empty session". But the Kalarm icon still appears in my "system tray" after the next reboot/login.I've also tried right-clicking on the Kalarm icon and selecting "quit". The icon still re-appears after the next reboot/login.Why didn't the session manager setting: "on login: start with an empty session" get rid of the Kalarm icon?

When I use the terminal to shutdown/reboot (sudo shutdown -h now or sudo reboot) all goes well. The PC is running Debian Squeeze with the GNOME desktop environment.
View 7 Replies View RelatedIt took me a while..But I finally got samba to be a pdc. I was able to join a test xp machine to the new domain samba made. That part worked well. In my Swat I added a samba new user and password. restarted samba etc.. Then tried to log in from the xp with the new user name as the password. As I hit enter im waiting for it to log in..the XP machine reboots. It seems to do that ever time I try. Im sure theres something not qit right in samba.conf or is it something else.
