General :: Installed Slackware - Host Login On Restart?
Apr 10, 2011
I just installed slackware on my pc. The installation went fine (I think). When I am trying to turn the computer on, I am asked to type the "host login". As I can remember I didn't write any username, or password. But as it seems, I have to type this in to login. I tried with "root", then this comes up "root@host:^#" if this is right, what should I type here to get further...

I have a physical machine of CentOs-5.4 on which I had installed Xen Virtualization. I have created VMs on that machine using virt-install. After installing all the VMs i used command virt-manager to see all the installed VMs. But after I have restarted my physical machine I am unable to find installed VMs by virt-manager command. It only shows name of the machine and id a qemu and can't see any installed VMs.

I have been using VMware Player for some time to host Fedora VMware images on Windows XP. I have been using Fedora 11 and 12 (both 32 and 64 bit) and recently started to use Fedora 13.
I use as a base the images provided by thoughtpolice. http://www.thoughtpolice.co.uk/
I usually install VMware tools and also keep the images updated (yum update) which sometimes changes the kernel.
I have recently had problems with the snapshots not having a network when I restore them. So far I don't have the problem with Fedora 11 and do have it with Fedora 12 (but used not to). I do have it with Fedora 13.
In each case the problem goes away when I uninstall the VMware tools and comes back when I install them again.
One of the symptoms is that SElinux complains about not being able to do something with /var/run/vmware-active-nics.
It looks to me that something is incorrect in the actions being taken when the snapshot is being restored. It does not happen every time and sometimes the network restores itself.
The network can be restored by rebooting the image.

I just recently installed Kubuntu desktop onto Ubuntu and I don't have any shutdown or restart options shown in KDE, but they show up in Gnome. I initially installed Kubuntu using GDM instead of KDM and switched to KDM when I saw that my Gnome taskbars overlayed my KDE taskbars. To switch from GDM to KDM I used the following command:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm
After enabling KDM the terminal suggested a command to configure KDM, however I can't remember the command. I ran it and I got a message that KDM was already configured.

I have installed NoMachine NxClient deb, on Ubuntu 11.04, Nx installed and I connected to my uni server fine. The Nx program was originally in the applications drop down menu in "others". After a restart Nx was no longer in the menu, I dl'd again and found in Ubuntu software center that there was an option to reinstall NXClient, so I reinstalled and the icons appeared in applications/internet. After a restart they(the NX icons) disappeared again. No other programs have disappeared from the app menu like that.edit: after finding edit menu, I noticed nx client (show) was not "ticked" in internet selection. after a reboot the icon is now available in the app/internet menu.Previous to this I found what I thought was the application in shell $/usr/NX/bin/nxclientbut it would not run from shell command.I added to the panel, created an application launcher for /usr/NX/bin/nxclient and it works there, too.

I have two servers, one has an empty / and the other has a subdirectory with a large number (4 gig) with many, many files. I need a way to transfer the files en masse from the server with the large number of files to the one that is essentially blank.I don't have space on the used host to simply gzip all the files. I've googled this and see that there may be some combination of tar and/or gzip that will let me do this with some sort of redirection.
I really need and example line of how this can be accomplished. If my explanation seems rather sparse, I can supply more details.

I'm having a minor inconvenient issue with Suse 11.2/KDE4.3.From a cold boot, and then the first login, the desktop and WM [Compiz-Emerald] loads ok, but the plasmoids/icons are not 'clickable', although I can use keyboard, Command Line and 'right click' menus ok.If I restart X, then log in again, everything is ok, and stays ok until the next cold boot. It's as if the plasma desktop is masked [if that makes sense?], but only on the first login, as if there is a boot sequence issue or something.

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 (and, on another server, 10.10) and can't seem to figure out how to remove the Shutdown and Restart options from the menu on the bottom right of the login screen.
I've tried
Code: gksudo -u gdm dbus-launch gconf-editor and checking the /apps/gdm/simple-greeter/disable_restart_buttons, but it doesn't do anything even after a reboot. I've also tried the above command as root (without the "-u gdm").
I have also tried adding the following lines to /etc/gdm/custom.conf:
Code: RebootCommand= ShutdownCommand= These seem to have no effect either. Is this a Gnome bug, or am I doing something wrong?

I've tried a few different ways to install the ATI graphics driver "fglrx" to get 3D acceleration. If I try to install using the standard file "ati-driver-installer-10-4-x86.x86_64.run" from the ATI web site it appears to work but then I discover it actually got an error.I saw a reference to ATI requiring 32-bit libraries to install their 64-bit driver. Is there a link or post that explains how to add the 32-bit libraries. Will that solve the problem, or will I just waste more time trying that?

I was trying to plug projector on my laptop with slackware 13.1 installed. The problem is that the projector stops showing whenever I start X. I can see everything starting from LILO loader, but whenever I type "startx" - bam, no signal or just a black screen on the wall. I try to switch to console mode with ctrl+alt+f1 - the view appears, switching back to X with ctrl+alt+f7 - view disappears. I am using awesome WM. I tried XFCE, but the result was the same. I also tried to change resolution to
Code:
xrandr --output default --mode 1024x768 / 800x600
, but again, no difference. My laptop is ASUS F3Jc. Fn keys doesn't help as well.

I have a workstation with Fedora 13. This workstation is used for very long remote processes. Recently it has been shutdown accidentally by a user and has caused the loss of some of these processes. As such, for precautionary reasons, I have decided to remove these options from all our workstations so that only the super user can initiate reboots or shutdowns.
In previous versions I was able to do this by using gdmsetup and unchecking the Show Action Menu option. This also added the SystemMenu=false flag under [greeter] in the /etc/gdm/custom.conf file. This was under RedHat EL5. However in Fedora 13 neither of these methods work. Gdmsetup no longer exists and adding that flag to the custom.conf file does not work. I rebooted after editting the file and the shutdown option still appears at login.
