I just managed to the one thing I wasn't supposed to do. I managed to mix up my drives and install Ubuntu on the wrong drive. I realized it seconds after starting the partitioning step but too late. It never started copying data but the new partitions are there. Is there any way of getting my data back. It's many photos aso that I don't have a backup of.
I don't want to "fsck" things up even more so I figured I'd ask if anyone has managed to recover from this.
I have an XD card with lots of pictures in it which suddenly stopped working, it gives me "card error" messages in my camera (and any other one) and it refuses to mount on my laptop's card reader (which does work in F11 for XD cards, I've tried other ones). So I'm trying to use some program to make an image of what's in the card, like ddrescue or dd_rhelp. But they all need me to mount the disk, which I just can't. I have tried to mount it manually, but I'm not even sure what device I should point to.
So my question is, how can I mount a faulty drive in such a way that any of these programs can make an image? Or maybe there is a smarter way to try to get my pictures back? (There are some non-free programs in Windows which may seemingly help, but I'd like to figure out how to do this in Linux).
I have a new system using an Intel DG451D main board. I have been trying to get a RAID 1 mirror set working as the main drive in this system and for some reason, my SATA drives - three of them all new have had their SMART data changed to show the drives as failing and in need of replacement. Eventually the drive reports failure to the degree that the BIOS no longer recognises it. When loading the Centos os I was getting differing results because of this issue. I am not sure if this is a hardware issue even - I know that the drives were all very much OK and brand new - no good now! Just putting a feeler out to see if anyone has had a similar issue or to see if anyone knows of any possible known causes for this?
Failing any explanation, can anyone suggest a good desktop style Main Board that supports RAID well for Centos 5.4? I plan to sue this as a small server system so graphics etc are not important here.
I have 6 disks (partitions) combined into one lvm volgroup in my server. The server have been online for a year.
And today, suddenly it hangs. At first, I thought it's caused by network lag, because after a couple minutes the server is responsive again. But then I felt something very wrong. I can't access any file that stored on the lvm.
After some dmesg, fdisk -l and a peek at /etc/lvm/archive/*, I found that one of the partitions used for lvm volgroup is missing. Tried a reboot, and the suspected disk is undetected even in BIOS. Must be caused by bad block on the disk's sector zero or something. I think missing one pv makes the volgroup failed to initiate. So, no volgroup, no logical volume. And I can't access the files on it for sure.
Is there a way I can save/rescue data from other non-damaged disks? I have no luck finding similar situation (and solution) by searching on google.
I just installed natty. I use Deja dup to backup my photos to the server in my basement, but now I can't find them. I really cant understand why theyre gone, but they are, maybe because I'm unorganized. Anyways, my hard drive may not be totally overwritten. Can i rescue my old data, or at least parts of it? How?
Dell Inspiron E1405 - 160 GB drive with 2 partitions - I think only 1 partition was used for windows and ubuntu Used wubi to install 10.04 - both XPP and 10.04 worked fine after repairing the XP install My boyfriend used Referencer (.reflib) in Ubuntu 10.04 to organize and tag about 900 documents. He spent around 9 hours on the project and its VERY IMPORTANT. I am a dumb ***, forgot the project was on the computer and updated to 10.10 via update manager without it backing up. Now I cant boot to XPP or Ubuntu - "error: no such device:", "grub rescue" My main concern is getting the data back. I would rather uninstall WUBI and install Ubuntu on the 2nd partition (wish I would have done this in the first place but 10.04 was my first Ubuntu install and I didn't know any better). I have to get this data back! I have tried the following and cant locate the referencer (.reflib) file or the .docs and .jpgs booted to USB using my 10.10 netbook remix USB install USB stick - I can see the windows files pulled the HD out and connected it to my Ubuntu netbook, an XPH and W7 computers -cant locate data
Adding several 2TB HDDs somehow crashed SATA controller on motherboard.Fedora will no longer boot.
I connected HDD (with Fedora OS) to another computer.Fedora gets past GRUB, but hangs before loading the splash screen. Is something wrong with GRUB settings?Previously, I had dual boot at GRUB (Fedora and WindowsXP).
What is the easiest way to get Fedora to boot properly on another system?I need access to those files.
When I print from OpenOffice Writer, some characters are replaced by random characters. For example, this morning all capital "I"'s were replaced by "" (German special character), a "J" was replaced by "t", and so on. But not all characters are replaced, most are correct.
In addition, the top of the documents are cut off, as if there is an overly wide top margin where the printer cannot print.
I exported the document to PDF and printed from Acrobat Reader, and everything was fine. No problems!
I'm running the Lucid release candidate (but the problem has bugged me for a while now), with a Brother HL2030 printer.
Thunderbird does not work properly in 10.04. Program windows come up blank with only the borders. Clicking on items on the menu often does nothing and when it does open a window like mail settings of fail to connect there is nothing inside the border. I have un-installed and reinstalled with the same results. All other programs seem to work fine. Could not find anyone with same problem. This is the same on several computers not just one.
I bought a 2nd hand DDR 1GB memory chipset a few days ago and inserted it in to spare slot on motherboard. However unsure if memory is working properly because bios does not recognise it and neither does Linux but system does appear to run a lot smoother with programs loading faster. If there is a test I can perform to check if memory is working fine or simply return back to shop I bought it? Computer is a DELL Optiplex 170L mini tower system.
the samba seems not working ever since i fresh install from system. When i want to share a folder, error message appears :
Samba's testparm returned error 1: Loaded smb config files from --parameter-name=usershare allow guests lp_load: refreshing parameters from --parameter-name=usershare allow guests params.c:OpenConfFile() - Unable to open configuration file "--parameter-name=usershare allow guests": No such file or directory Error loading services..
Why is that? is that i havent install its other installation? i installed it from "apt-get install". But when i go to other Windows XP, i can see this [ubuntu box] at the [network place]
I started #aptitude safe-upgrade and switched to another user. Gdm showed the error and hung down the system. So I did reboot. After reboot if I start totem I see such a result:
Code:
$ totem ImportError: No module named gobject ** (totem:1978): WARNING **: Could not import pygtk ImportError: No module named pygtk
[CODE]....
I tried to complete the upgrade with aptitude safe-upgrade, but it shows that all packages are up to date. I am afraid that some other packages are affected by this crash. How can I repair system?
I registered here and got Ubuntu a couple days ago. After setting up and connecting to my wireless LAN I went on the internet and uploaded the WINE source. However, after about 5-10 seconds of staying on the internet it all of a sudden stopped working (the internet stopped its connectivity) that is. And I was still connected to the wireless LAN. I tried to reconnect like most people would do, and I was not able to connect again (Would prompt me for password continuously to no avail). There isn't a problem on my windows 7 (I'm able to connect to LAN/internet).
I've been trying to rip DVD's using AcidRip but whatever DVD I try I get the same error from AcidRip - Can't Read DVD track. Faulty Disc?
After reading the forums I've tried /dev/dvd ,/dev/sr0 (Found by using the Disk Utility), /Media/DVD Title etc and tried running AcidRip both as myself and Sudo without success.
I upgraded from 11.2 to 11.3 My task bar looks a little bit "strange" after the upgrade Here you can find out how it looks like [URL] You can see the American flag that (left) that appears a little bit strange as well as at the right side the kwallet icon to be over the time. As I expand the taskbar to the left and then reduce it to the right these strange things keep happening not to the same icons all the time but to some of them.
I would like to remove from the Thunderbird every faulty email message that it keeps in his "memory". For example if accidentally I send an email to faulty@email.com every time i press f to the To: field the faulty@email.com entry appears.
Is it possible somehow to remove these email addresses?
My Ibuntu 10.4 system can't be updated because of error message:"Segmentation faulty tree" coming from apt-get check. It reads 50% of then stops. It shows reading the package lists, the Done.
I'm having a variety of problems getting a new PC working properly, getting a reliable wifi connection is one of them. Earlier today I upgraded to 10.10 using my wife's account and download speeds were frequently at a reasonable 800kbps at times. This evening my son complains about the slow speed and a test shows 133kbps download with 616kbps upload. My own PC connected by wire to the router works OK.
A couple of days ago this problem seemed resolved when I installed Wicd but didn't configure it. I thought Network-Manager would have been removed but was still present. However, a downloads test showed 6Mbps. After today's upgrade slow downloads have returned.
I'm currently using this PC with a wifi link to the router and am connected to the Forum. If I hover the mouse pointer over the N-M toolbar symbol a window opens saying-
Wireless network connection 'Auto MYESSID'active:MYESSID(67%) If I right mouse click on the N-M symbol and select Edit connection... the wireless window reports that I was last connected 3 days ago. My own PC's wired connection window says against Auto eth0 that I've never used this. Both these are untrue. I wondered if having a hidden ESSID doesn't help? I'm left thinking that the rt2500 based wifi card needs replacing. We're some distance from other houses.
I saw that on every computer in which I installed LXDE on Debian 8 (the problem was not existing on Debian 7.8.0)
So I decided to use mate-desktop-environment but a brand new problem (always ) made his apparition when I try to use tightvncserver on a Mate desktop (no task bar, and memory growing GB after GB up to the memory explosion after 1 or 2 minutes with 16GB RAM -I will post another subject for that once I will know more things about it - since it is, after all, an huge problem causing the computer to crash if "reboot" our "vncserver -kill :1" is not quickly done)
But here talking about LXDE taskbar: others LXDE users, do you have this problem with the icons ?
opensuse 11.2 64 bits installed in a RAID1 software array. Everything worked smooth during installation, the system boots, the mdx partitions are in their places, did the upgrades, configured the way i wanted, booted several times... all ok. Then i wanted to test the RAID and since its RAID1 i just disconnected 1 drive and started the computer. All what i got is
Disconnect the other drive, then i got GRUB loading stage 1.5 GRUB loading, pleas wait... (hd1,0)/message: file not found and a simple boot menu (in character mode) shows up with the 2 options SUSE LINUX and Failsafe -- SUSE LINUX (no version number)
So now that it's working the Server can't be seen from the internet. I see that the router changed all the ip address so I changed the fort port forwarding on the router and still not working. And the external ip address has not changed.
Using Ubuntu Maverick and Totem, DVD playback has a slightly shaky picture and a little static at the top and bottom of the picture. Also, top level menus sometimes don't display, or the menu displays but movie won't play, or just nothing happens when trying to play a DVD movie. This problem is happening on two completely different boxes with clean installs. DVD playback seemed OK on Kubuntu and Xubuntu 10.10, as was OK on 10.04. Is this a known issue? And if so, is there a patch?
I am not sure if this is the correct section but it has to do with a faulty HD. So, the datacenter confirmed that the HD needs to be changed. They put it back and asked me when they should replace it. I told them to wait a bit.
Since then, one of the VPS hosted in this server is booting on "initramfs"
I wanted to read out a friend's windows hard drive, so I took the IDE connection from my CD drive and plugged it into the hard drive.
Now at boot time at the stage where it usually checks all partitions, linux complains about "zero length partition of that harddrive" and then stops giving me an emergency login.
Maybe that hard drive is actually faulty, even though I see all partitions correctly in windows. What can I do to make linux stop checking it? Is there a boot time option?
I suppose later I can manually mount a /dev/sdb or so device. I just have to figure out which
PS: what the easiest way to check which devices/partitions are available to mount?
Guy Im having issues getting my NIC to work. I dont think the NIC is faulty because when I plug the network cable in I get the green and orange light and I get the below result when running lspci | grep net
I have tried many distros and get the same message faulty hard drive SATA the computer was running Windows Vista just fine. I changed the Bios for SATA to be ATA instead of ACHI..
I've been using Excel from OpenOffice with moderate success for the last year. Now I've just tried to open a new spreadsheet and I'm suddenly getting a highly condensed view. The cells are about 1mm X 4mm. If I expand them by selecting and dragging, then try to copy data from another spreadsheet onto the new one, the data shrinks to the small scale -- unreadable.
