Debian :: Rescue Data From Damaged Lvm?
Apr 16, 2010I have 6 disks (partitions) combined into one lvm volgroup in my server. The server have been online for a year.
And today, suddenly it hangs. At first, I thought it's caused by network lag, because after a couple minutes the server is responsive again. But then I felt something very wrong. I can't access any file that stored on the lvm.
After some dmesg, fdisk -l and a peek at /etc/lvm/archive/*, I found that one of the partitions used for lvm volgroup is missing. Tried a reboot, and the suspected disk is undetected even in BIOS. Must be caused by bad block on the disk's sector zero or something. I think missing one pv makes the volgroup failed to initiate. So, no volgroup, no logical volume. And I can't access the files on it for sure.
Is there a way I can save/rescue data from other non-damaged disks? I have no luck finding similar situation (and solution) by searching on google.
Ubuntu :: Rescue Data After Faulty Partitioning?
Dec 2, 2010I just managed to the one thing I wasn't supposed to do. I managed to mix up my drives and install Ubuntu on the wrong drive. I realized it seconds after starting the partitioning step but too late. It never started copying data but the new partitions are there. Is there any way of getting my data back. It's many photos aso that I don't have a backup of.
I don't want to "fsck" things up even more so I figured I'd ask if anyone has managed to recover from this.

Jan 5, 2011Dell Inspiron E1405 - 160 GB drive with 2 partitions - I think only 1 partition was used for windows and ubuntu Used wubi to install 10.04 - both XPP and 10.04 worked fine after repairing the XP install My boyfriend used Referencer (.reflib) in Ubuntu 10.04 to organize and tag about 900 documents. He spent around 9 hours on the project and its VERY IMPORTANT. I am a dumb ***, forgot the project was on the computer and updated to 10.10 via update manager without it backing up. Now I cant boot to XPP or Ubuntu - "error: no such device:", "grub rescue" My main concern is getting the data back. I would rather uninstall WUBI and install Ubuntu on the 2nd partition (wish I would have done this in the first place but 10.04 was my first Ubuntu install and I didn't know any better). I have to get this data back! I have tried the following and cant locate the referencer (.reflib) file or the .docs and .jpgs booted to USB using my 10.10 netbook remix USB install USB stick - I can see the windows files pulled the HD out and connected it to my Ubuntu netbook, an XPH and W7 computers -cant locate data

Oct 6, 2010Where apart from ~/.kde4/share/apps/kmail does kmail keep account data, such as login data/names of pop/smtp servers? I wanted to install an entirely clean version of kmail, so I uninstalled/re-installed kmail via YAST. I manually deleted ~/.kde4/share/apps/kmail. After installing kmail I found that the account data of my Yahoo account were still listed in the kmail configuration panel. Shall I delete the Yahoo account within kmail prior to uninstalling the kmail package?

Now I have the following problem the LVM file system don't mount properly.If I open the mount point I see only a few files of the LVM disk. If I want to unmount the disk I get the following error:

If I want to mount the volume I get the following error:

The cells are about 1mm X 4mm. If I expand them by selecting and dragging, then try to copy data from another spreadsheet onto the new one, the data shrinks to the small scale -- unreadable.

Is that possible without losing the data that is already on the data drive?Just want to make sure before I bought the 2 two drives. Feb 19, 2011We purchased a new database system at work last October, ditching the old system because of a lack of support from the vendor. This is a retail Point of Sale and Backoffice database system. I am not sure what system the new one runs on, but the system we replaced was a Firebird data base. The reason I am posting is because we are now in need of the information contained in the old database which was not completely imported into the new system.
Basically the problem is this: The database in on a Windows XP system and I found a copy of SQL Manager Lite 2008 on the system, which after quite a bit of studying, I figured out how to extract the database into a removable file. I have this file (178MB) on a USB stick in a file called Backoffice.fbd.
My studying suggests to me that I can get into this database with MySQL. I have never used this and have no clue how to do this. All I want to be able to do get into the database and create tab deliminated spreadsheet files for each of the database sections (Customers, Repairs, Sales History, stock files, etc.) Is it possible to do this with Ubuntu and MySQL and if so, can expert suggest one or two things to get me started. While a guided tutorial would be nice because I am not an expert, I am willing to learn on my own if someone could point me in the right direction.

May 9, 2010I have some data files that should be distributed with my program. Using dist_pkgdata_DATA in Makefile.am, I get these files installed to /usr/local/data/share/package-name. The problem is that data is read-only, and my program needs to modify it. Playing with dist_sharedstate_DATA, dist_localstate_DATA, dist-data_DATA varibles, I got different installation directories, like /usr/local/com, usr/local/var, but data is always read-only.
How can I distribute modifiable data files with my package? I need some common directory for all users, or maybe local data in a user directory.

Aug 18, 2010I was ill a few days ago and in bed stumbling LOL cat pictures when I got hammered by a drive-by trojan. I'm sure I will have to do a complete install of windows and all my stuff, but I wanted to get the pc working to the point where I could move files off one drive to another.
So, I started trying out various linux based rescue cd's, Avira, BitDefender, F-Secure, and all off them will not connect to the internet. I have a att two wire modem set to bridge mode and a linksys router. I'm using this set up to send this message with off my laptop wired to the router. Also, from my laptop I can view the shared folder on the infected pc. So, to me it seems that it should work.
I did have to replace the onboard lan with a pci lan card, but I did turn off the onboard lan and the (cheap) lan card shows up on slot 1 using irq 10 during post.

The printers are ancient Newbury data dot matrix wide carriage with 7 data bits receive 8 data bits transmit Xon/Xoff flow control. Now I remember setting the transmit and receive data bits as above but after 7 years can't remember where.

Jun 1, 2015I have a brand new Z97-PRO (Wifi/USB3.1 version) that I got to replace a Gryphon Z87, and it was working great for the first day. I had my Debian and Windows drives both working, and I was working on getting GRUB reinstalled on the Debian drive in no time. At some point I needed to restore my Windows MBR for the millionth time, but this time was different. The Windows logo popped up and froze there. I know this is a thing that sometimes happens, but every other time since I replaced my Gryphon this process only lasted seconds. I let it sit for hours and it didn't move.
I then tried my Debian live USB, which loaded into the main menu, but upon selecting rescue mode it black screened and hung. This was an issue I experienced when I first got the board, but it seemed to work itself out after a few reboots and remained flawless until it just came back. At this point, I'm unable to get in to any of my OSes and I can't seem to successfully boot any external media in order to fix it. My BIOS is totally stock save for secure boot, which is set to Other OS, and memory in XMP mode. I also tried using an Ubuntu Live USB, but ended up hanging with the exact same Q-Codes as in Debian. I am running the system on 1 stick of RAM while testing.
Q-Codes at hang:
UEFI USB - AF (Exit Boot Services Event)
Regular USB - F6 (Reserved for future AMI progress codes)
Specs:
- 2 boot SSDs (OCZ for Windows, Kingston for Debian), 2 storage drives, and a DVD drive.
- The boot SSDs occupy SATA ports 1 & 2, the DVD drive takes up 3, and the storage drives take up 5 & 6
- i7 4770K, 32GB (8GBx4) Corsair Dominator RAM, GTX780Ti

Sep 21, 2009My hard disk is failing, and I want to rescue the files from it before it is un-bootable. I was planning to do this by booting a live cd, making a .tar file of /, and then burning it to a cd or dvd. The disk is still bootable, but I'm getting warning messages that 73 sectors are bad. I have another hard disk ready to plug in, I just need to rescue the files, and then install Fedora 11 64-bit on the new drive, at which point I will overwrite / with the / from the .tar file.
Basically I was just wondering how to mount a hard disk to recover files from a rescue cd. I tried to make a .tar file of / already, but that failed because the system was active and changing the various system files at the same time that tar was trying to package them.

I deleted Fedora, I installed openSUSE, and I copied the .evolution folder from FAT32 to openSUSE home. Inbox and Sent mail were correctly recognized, but not the account data neither the contact list.
